Not wanting the exact same thing that happened to their previous leader, Birchstar, Flightheart and Stormpaw immediately speak with StarClan. There, he meets with their ancestors and asks for guidance. "The Hive is persistent despite Buzzy Bee and Nettles second deaths," says Plumface. "Tempestflight is now in the Dark Forest. Perhaps it is her who locking you in these dreams." She looks very forlorn - after all it was her apprentice that helped cause so much suffering in the clan. While at the river, Birchstar slips and falls in, losing another life in the process. "StarClan, what are you doing!?" he demands the dark place. "Why does this keep happening!?" The Dark Forest is fooling you," a StarClan cat says, suddenly appearing in front of him. "But, don't worry; we forgive you. Or, at least, Buzzy Bee does; he forced us to contact you. He was your chosen leader. You overthrew him. That's what rouges do, not warriors. Somehow, you need to fix this, or we'll never be connected."

Although he bristles, Birchstar is suddenly enveloped by shining light. From behind him, StarClan warriors appear with Spottedstar leading them. They chase away the false StarClan cat who was actually a Dark Forest warrior in disguise. "Begone! I have killed Buzzy Bee and Nettle myself! Tell Tempestflight or whoever it is leads you that StarClan will stand for this nonesense no longer. We accept Birchstar as the rightful leader - we gave him lives and I believe he can lead the clan well. You have no place here."
When Birchstar woke up and confessed about his visions to Stripewhisker, Flightheart, and Stormpaw, the deputy looked ashamed. "I'm sorry that my parents shadow still looms over us. I promise that I will do everything in my power to make things right."

The two confer with Honeysuckle but are stumped. "There was nothing else there but Tempestflight though. And we've destroyed the Forgiveness Hive long ago. What else could there be that connects us?" Stripewhisker has a worried thought. Perhaps it was him and his sister, direct kin to the dark leaders. Daisyblaze snaps him out of it by saying that they were true warriors who would fight for AppleClan through and through. Besides, the deputy had more pressing matters to worry about. Such as the growing aggressions of MintClan.

There is another scuffle at the MintClan border. Although they were not present for it, MintClan warriors challenged Troutleap, calling them a traitor. Redclaw now sports a torn ear which does little to calm hostilities between her brother and her and the newcomer. Birchstar takes Troutleap aside, wanting to know the true reason behind his joining.

“I didn’t do anything wrong and I left of my own accord… I wasn’t exiled if that’s what you’re wanting to know.” They begin, clearly irritated before realization flashes in his orange eyes. “I’m sorry, Birchstar, I don’t know how to fully explain it right now. MintClan disagrees with me and thinks I’m a traitor, isn’t it something that Swanstar doesn’t agree with the rest of MintClan?” They plead, mentioning the MintClan leader’s name. The cat seems uncertain of how to explain his reason for leaving MintClan, likely due to how bad it may reflect on him…

Thankfully, Birchstar does not push the situation anymore. Troutleap is later comforted by Daisyblaze and they are slowly realizing that they have feelings more than friendship. However, when the gathering comes, it is clear that MintClan is unwilling to let AppleClan go. Swanstar challenges them and demands a battle for a piece of land past the river. Birchstar knows that they cannot afford to lose land at a time like this. He accepts the challenge and him, Stripewhisker, and the rest of the senior warriors begin thinking of battle plans.

(how does a cat survive getting impaled  these medicine cats must be going to med school at this rate) Being impaled by a branch is too serious of an injury for the leader. He loses 3 lives consecutively before the medicine cats manage to get him stable. In the end, he is left mute and unable to walk for very far after his injuries. Despite being in constant pain, he instructs Stripewhisker to make sure that the MintClan issue is handled. Although there was no battle to be had, AppleClan still suffered a loss. Not wanting to aggravate their neighbors while their leader was suffering, Stripewhisker simply offered up their territory. This action was to the detriment of the clan for they lost a good hunting ground. Some were vocal about their disagreement but the deputy used their leader's health status as a sign that violence was not right the answer. What effects it would have on the clan would still be seen later because at present, Songsky gave birth and her litter were now extra mouths to feed.

Although Stripewhisker has done everything in his power to make sure his clan was prepared for battle, the attack still left everyone surprised. A regular border patrol was ambushed by a hoard of battle ready MintClanners who were looking much better thanks to their newly acquired territory. They wanted more, perhaps even the entire riverbank and then some. Sunpaw was sent back to camp as a messenger and immediately battle plans sprang into action. Already there were Skyflight, Flamefur, Flowerclaw, and Windlight but reinforcements were soon sent composed of Thymefoot, Tulipfur, Roseheart and Brightpelt. Thanks to their training, they were holding their own. But who knows what MintClan were willing to do.

In the midst of battle, Flowerclaw is dragged back to camp by a bloody but strong Flamefur. His injured paw acted up during the battle and he had suffered deep wounds. Songsky is grateful to her sister for bringing her mate back in one piece but as Stormclaw is treating him, Flightheart and Flamefur race back into the fray to help those still there. Another cat who is also injured is Brightpelt who was still out on thee battlefield but Flamefur refuses to mention it to his worried sister Redclaw.
