Softlight tilted his head slightly, blinking, a little confused. "Uhm... important?" he asked, wondering what Beetlewing was trying to say. "What exactly was it?" Relatively curious, Softlight figured it could either be important or completely irrelevant, knowing what he knew about Beetlewing, but he was willing to give the other warrior the benefit of the doubt.

Robinwhisper's eyes widened with glee, and she couldn't help but nod her head enthusiastically as she watched her apprentice glide towards the tree. She kept careful watch of Paintpaw's tail, as she had long hair which could certainly drag a leaf, therefore it was crucial to make sure her apprentice kept her tail low but not too low. She was pleased when she saw that the squirrel had taken to cracking a nut, and was unaware of what was going on beneath it.

Beetlewing frowned, straining his mind for the answer. He saw the look on Softlight's face and felt stupid. "Uhh...it was...not a sound," Beetlewing recalled slowly, looking away distantly and seemingly confused. Not a sound, nothing but the sounds of rustling leaves and birdsong. Sight? "I saw, uhh, I saw... saw nothing." Sunshine and ever-present green of the forest. Nothing was spotted on the territory. Then that means it must have been a scent! "A smell! Yes, a-a smell, I smelled something!" Beetlewing whipped back to Softlight excitedly, eyes wide with amazement that he actually managed to recall it! "It was.. heavy.. Stunk like dirt, and death. I-it wasn't a cat.. B-But still, a living thing. It..it scared me."

The she-cat carried herself lightly on her paws, watching the creature with all of her attention and focus. She poised herself at the base of the trunk, and flung herself onto the tree, climbing up with haste. At this point, the squirrel noticed her, and it took off down the branch as she reached where it connected to the trunk. She went to go after it, but her claw snagged on the branch as she had started to run, and this slowed her enough where the squirrel got too much of a distance to be caught. Cursing to herself, she felt disappointed and slunk back down to the ground.

Intrigued, Softlight mulled over the thought. "Really? Interesting. Badger, maybe? Crow-food? Well, you said it was alive... maybe some kind of predator?" he thought aloud, wondering if his words would maybe help Beetlewing connect his thoughts and memories, possibly able to link the smell to something he already knew of. "Perhaps we should go check it out, if you remember where about you smelled it?" he suggested.

(( @runningtea alright! ))
Beetlewing nodded, feeling that if he returned to the forest he'd be able to smell out the scent again. "I uhh, I can try!," he meowed hopefully, beginning to pad away as he stared at the ground thoughtfully. Was it a fox, a badger, a dog? Whatever it was, he remembered knowing it wasn't good.

Softlight nodded and smiled reassuringly to Beetlewing. Although several moons younger than Beetlewing (and a new warrior himself), he felt like how he responded to Beetlewing was appropriate. He wanted to be supportive of the tom, and felt like he was doing decently. He was, however, still unsure about what Beetlewing could have smelled. He thought about searching for Skystar as they left camp, but thought that it may not be too big of a deal. He hoped he and Beetlewing could handle whatever it was.

Robinwhisper hung on the edge of her paws as she watched her apprentice barely miss her catch. She raced to the tree and sprung up to sit on the branch, running through in her mind what to say to constructively critique her. In the end all she could say was: "Better luck next time, Paintpaw. Maybe keep your claws sheathed until after you go to pounce on the creature and they won't get snagged." Immediately she regretted her words, that was no more help than a kit could have given. Twitching her whiskers, she stared into the disappointed gaze of Paintpaw to see if she had accepted her mentor's words or felt their absence of depth as much as Robinwhisper did.

Beetlewing led Softlight through the woods, gazing around the grassy undergrowth. He found his paw tracks from earlier and decided to follow them back to where he'd been. As he walked, however, his nerves grew. What if it was a big nasty dog? Or something just as terrible? Beetlewing's nose and brain were a matter of life and death in this case. He only prayed to Starclan that he wasn't leading the two of them to their worst fears. Suddenly, approaching a heavily-scored tree, a pungent smell hit Beetlewing. His memories flooded back to him as he got a taste of the odor: he'd been tracking the squirrel by scent when he found this disturbing smell. He approached the tree, looking up at the heavy gashes. Those were definitely not cat claws...

Rainbelly gently shook the last of the twigs and moss scraps from his fur, finished reinforcing and patching a portion of the apprentice's den walls for the coming colder weather. It was a job he liked doing, working with his paws and teeth for a good cause, and it wasn't as stressful. Tadpoletail would have liked this, he thought absently, a melancholy feeling threatening to overtake him, but he shook it away and instead went to go bring some fresh-kill to Jasminefoot in the nursery. Kits always gave him this bubbly feeling in his chest.
- Gripping the largest piece of pray he could find on the pile in his teeth, Rainbelly slipped in through the entrance, the warm sunlight that filtered through behind him framing his face and catching on the tips of his whiskers. "Hwey Jahmineoot! Ywou hungy?" He greeted the expecting queen with a muffled meow, dropping the fresh-kill and giving her a lopsided grin.

[LOL Yeah its super late and I have school early, so after this I'll be off. Glad you all joined!]
Paintpaw nodded sollemnly in agreement. "I feel mouse-brained, making such a beginner's mistake," she sighed. "I promise I'll catch the next one!" Her response was cheery, her eyes bright. She carefully found her way from the branch down the trunk to the ground. "I'm ready to keep going! I wouldn't want Dreamwave to be angry with me!" she mewed, shivering at the thought.

Wide-eyed, Softlight was obviously frightened. The strange, heavy smell swathed over his senses and lingered, making him feel almost ill. Almost too afraid to speak, the young warrior backed away. "W-what could that be from?" he quietly asked Beetlewing, his tail large and fur on end. It took all of his courage to not turn and bolt away.
[G'night!]

(( it's supposed to be fox x3 ))
Beetlewing glanced back at Softlight, his panic only fueling his own. His fur stood on end as he continued to smell the tree. "Uhhh, o-oak...n-nettles...dirt...and.. k-kill scent..." Beetlewing stammered, tail twitching nervously behind him. He couldn't remember what this combination was! But he figured the young warrior would. "What uh..what is that Softlight...?"

Jasminefoot turned to Rainbelly, the large tom startling her. She jumped, thin fur prickling slightly. "Oh! Oh, Starclan..." she sighed, calming herself. Looking at the prey, she realized how hungry she was and gave Rainbelly a sheepish nod. "M-Many thanks..!" Taking the kill, she laid down and began to gently knaw at the flesh. "Ah..is good. Better than kittypet slop fed at home," she giggled, chewing through the stringy meat.

"Good thinking! Let's keep hunting." Robinwhisper mewed softly down to her apprentice before loading her back legs and leaping down from the tree. Her fall was less than graceful as her small feet didn't catch a grip at her landing, causing her right foot to slip on a leaf and she slapped the ground on her right flank. She quickly jolted upright before shaking the dirt and leaf debris from her down pelt. "Er, uh, when leaping from a tree remember to set your paws at the landing." As soon as the mew left her mouth, the scent of sparrow rushed in. Ears pricked and alert, she narrowed her eyes to the nearest yew tree to see if the bird was residing there to no such avail. "Where's the sparrow, Paintpaw?" she whispered towards her apprentice.

[I'm going to make an opener for Hawkjaw]
Hawkjaw woke suddenly, the fur in his ears prickling softly from the noise of clan life outside the den. The way the sun was violently streaming into the cracked tree trunk which made up the warriors' den told him it was much later than he needed to be sleeping. He immediately jolted upright, furiously shaking his sleek tabby coat before padding quickly into the clearing. The sun-filled gorge made him swell with pride, and he watched as some of his clan mates patched up dens. Turning his fgaze to the crack above the warriors' den, he decided that since leaf-fall was almost upon them now was as good a time as ever to patch it up. He crossed to the entrance of camp quickly to go gather clay and twigs to bring back to camp.

(I'm going to make one for Smokefur too)
Smokefur opened his eyes, and saw that the warriors were already up and maybe on a hunting patrol. He has been in GroveClan for three moons now and he was starting to like it here. Even better than his previous clan, HawkClan.

Softlight shook his head lightly and blinked a few times, trying to focus. He remembered this scent faintly, from his very early apprentice days. "Uhm... fox... maybe?" he suggested, wondering if that was true. "We should go and tell Skystar right away, so our patrols can be aware and safe," he meowed. He was unaware on the exact freshness of the scents, but knew that what he said was necessary. His voice shook slightly, but he felt like they should hurry back to camp to warn the Clan.

Nodding repeatedly, Paintpaw aknowledged her mentor's words on paw placement. She herself had come down less than gracefully, and then focused her senses on trying to locate the sparrow that Robinwhisper had mentioned. Darting her eyes around, she could not place its location based on sight. Her jaws parted, she could only smell the traces of its scent, but not pinpoint it. Her ears pricked, she listened. After a few heartbeats, she motioned with her ear flick to a large maple. "There? Maybe?" she questioned quietly, glancing at Robinwhisper.

Directing her attention to the maple her apprentice had gestured to, Robinwhisper found she couldn't see the sparrow either, but it was apparent its scent t was in the vicinity of the still thickly leaved tree. Please let this bird be on the ground. she pleaded silently. "I'm sure that's where it is." she mewed. "Want to have another go or should I?"

Paintpaw felt heat flush her face, and all the way through to her ear tips. "Uhm... up to you..." she replied sheepishly, looking down towards her paws and silently scuffing the ground once with her pad. The simple mistake she had made trying to catch the squirrel had her embarrassed, and she was unsure if she wanted to give another go immediately. However, if Robinwhisper asked her to, she would. She also didn't want to disappoint Dreamwave, or Robinwhisper in front of her mother, either.

Robinwhisper watched her normally confident apprentice circle the ground with her paw. Searching her gaze with soft eyes, she knew the young cat was eager to impress both herself and Dreamwave. "How about we do it together, but quickly. Before the bird gets away." she mewed, her voice soft but assuring. She darted her gaze to where she had last heard and smelled the bird, and finally saw it in the undergrowth beneath the maple her apprentice had pointed out previously. "It's there, on the ground. You stalk it from the left and I will from the right and we will ambush it together." Narrowing her eyes, Robinwhisper lowered herself to the ground and silently padded toward the bird, careful not to flick her tail or russle any leaves.

Paintpaw nodded, and followed Robinwhisper's movements, but in the opposite direction. She hoped that if the bird flew her direction, she could catch it. The apprentice felt a prickle of confidence at Robinwhisper's reassuring words, and slowly stalked towards it. Careful of her fur and tail placement, she hoped she wouldn't alert the creature.

Robinwhisper carefully side glanced at her apprentice. She wanted so badly to get this prey for the clan. She began to think about the praise she and Paintpae would feel returning to the camp with full jaws, and didn't notice a twig beneath her paw until it made a snapping sound. The sparrow looked up, startled and prepared to take flight, but Robinwhisper pounced before it could stretch its brown wings fully. She administered a quick killing bite to its neck before turning happily to her apprentice with an evidently happy expression stretching across her muzzle. "This should give one cat a good meal tonight!" She mewed cheerily, dropping the sparrow beside an exposed root beneath the tree and using her paws to cover the bird with earth. "Now it's your turn Paintpaw."
