Destrian looked uncomfortable, but spoke with assurance, "I doubt anyone here knows those woods better than me. And if my two friends are still hiding out there, a knowledgeable guide will be absolutely necessary." He gripped the crutch he'd been using in one fist, wondering when he would heal enough to walk on his own.

Thayer had to nod in acknowledgement to his words. "That's true. And with the lead scouts ill, the group will need a guide, especially one who might be able to navigate the forest as you say. IF your friends are still there, then we might also need a person to act as an ambassador on our part. Even if they don't come back to camp, hey might be good allies to have," she mused. Maybe they could even show them a spot for another camp, one to hide some of the growing number of forces so the King won't find them. She looked back to Destrian. "I can see how you'll be helpful, but it's still Varik who needs to be convinced. You're case is a good one, but he'll still look at how well you can carry your weight on the trip. He's the battle master, after all."

Hammer nodded at Thayer's words, and then roused himself from his seat to examine the roasting meat. "Hey-oh! I think we're just about ready for a feast!" he exclaimed, as Dagger gave his agreement, stirring the stew about.
Destrian gave a grin, and lay the crutch to the side, his worries momentarily forgotten.

Hammer and Dagger both happily obliged, digging into their large portions with enthusiasm, and Dagger still began to talk between large bites, miraculously not spraying bits of food about. "So, what all has happened here in our absence, Thayer?" He asked, slurping down what Destrian guessed to be about five of his own bites.

Dagger shook his head. "It just doesn't seem logical. We know he already has numbers on his side from conscripting men in the Eastern cities. Why doesn't he March on us, knowing where we are? He's playing at some elaborate game, and I don't like it. I don't like it at all."
Destrian thought to himself, considering the events going on. It did seem odd, to send those six soldiers on a suicide mission like that, and not even attempt any direct attack. Now there was opposition, for sure, but it had only caused more discomfort and uncertainty among Order Prime.

Destrian blinked. He hadn't really thought of it before. "Less than a score. Just enough to take out my village, but no more than that. Do you think there were other incidents like that? Maybe the King is directing handfuls of soldiers to attack or cause trouble in small, spread out groups. We already saw how much chaos is caused here, and with the level that they succeeded at Whitewater... If that's his plan, it's working." His gaze dropped as he pondered the possibility. "Death by a thousand cuts."

Thayer nodded in his direction. "That's certainly one theory," she agreed. "By taking out smaller villages, he eliminates allies for us. We have enough at the moment, but he might be hoping he'll get lucky and find one of our main suppliers. But that also takes time, money, and troops away from his main force as well. So the attacks have to be random and with a span of time between them. I believe that he had spies watching the events of today. To see how we dealt with this threat, how big our camp is, how many people we command. Whatever his motive, he's scared to put any large plans in action. That's the only reason we don't have a full out war with him right now."

"Bh'ardole it then!" Hammer pounded a fist against the log he sat on. "Let us strike him in the heart before he can twist us around his finger any longer! Why wait while he slaughters more villages like Destrian's, while he destroys families like your own, Thayer! He turns this world about like a machine under his control for too long. We should be done with it!" Dagger nodded in solemn agreement, his bowl of stew growing cold in his hands.

"How so?" Destrian spoke up, looking curiously at Thayer. "By interrupting the king's own supply methods? That could work, but we really would need spies and inside people of our own."

Dagger's eyes lit up then. "Rebels! We could infiltrate his men by tenfold each day at that point!" an odd look came to his face then, and he added in a much quieter voice. "In a perfect world, we could even end the war with no bloodshed..."
Destrian nodded vigorously at the first part. It was a good plan, a solid plan. An incredible plan, even. He looked over to Thayer, and could see the light in her eyes as her mind churned out the plan. He felt something then, admiration he supposed, and somewhere within himself, he decided that he liked that part of her, maybe more than anything else about her. The emotion was fleeting though, his mind caught up in the race of strategy and plot, and then caught off by Dagger's trailing comment.

"The men would have to be humans, though," Thayer continued. "Or half-humans. Those who could get away with looking as human as possible." If there was a sudden show of elves or dwarves looking to fight for the King's side, then things would definitely be suspicious. Her father would know people in the city who could help forge papers if it ever came to that, but being hired as a solider was never really that complex. Still, they would have some informants on the inside, as much as she hated to bring her family into the war."We would need scouts, too. I could be one since I know the city, but it'd be ideal if we could get at least four in unnoticed. Someone would need to be inside the barracks as well, preferably someone well liked by the King's Men. The more information they have about their routine and practices, the better we can pick them off. Some blood shed may still happen, but less than if we had a full out war." The plan was simple in its nature, but even she knew that nothing could be done without the Marshals' approval. It would work, to an extent, but there were plenty of details they were overlooking. For this reason, the young woman shook her head, returning herself to the present. "Of course, the plan would have to be approved by Varik before anything can happen. He may find too much fault in the idea altogether.

"The men I know that survived from Whitewater could be a good fit for that. They were never seen by the Royal Soldiers." He agreed that it should be run by Varik, but now he was excited to have more reason to go back to Whitewater. Part of it was duty, but he knew part of him was hoping for some relief from his guilt at having run away ok that fateful night.

"Absolutely," Destrian replied. "I know they would be eager. Just a matter of finding them... But that can wait, as you said, we still need Varik's approval."
Hammer nodded, roused from his brooding silence. "Aye, a good plan it is, but Destrian's right. It can wait, and needs time to settle, with Varik too. I'll talk to him tomorrow, dwarf to dwarf when Dagger and I report in for our duties. For now, let's finish this meal!" He gave a grin, obviously trying to brighten the mood once again and happy for an excuse. He dug back in, complimenting Thayer once more on the stew.

Time was the tester of any plan, this Thayer knew. With so many people in the camp, she doubted their ideas held a lot of merit. After all, there were far more experienced fighters, strategy makers, and battle worn veterans among them. They were just a bunch of youth thinking they had bright ideas. She wouldn't be surprise if the idea was turned aside. Still, there would be no harm in letter Varik know the idea in the future event that he may be able to polish it into an actual plan of action. "Speaking of which, I should be getting ready for my shift," she said. It was almost time for the rotation of the lookouts around the camp. This time, she was on one of the early shifts. After the attack this morning, the young woman bet there would be an increase in man power stationed about, just to be on the safe side. "Don't think I need to be late. Help yourselves to the food, but be sure to spare me something for later," she told the men as she stood and walked into her tent for her bow and quiver.

Destrian gave Thayer a smile, and then focused on finishing his food before stretching his legs, wincing at the pain from his muscles growing stiff. His leg had been better today, but he knew rest would be welcomed tonight. He turned to Hammer with a thought, "Where are your tents?" he was looking forwards to talking more with the brothers, but knew that they were probably welcoming rest as well.
"I'm actually not sure who we're with," Dagger mused, "But I know where it is... I think."

Dagger gave a laughing scoff and a dismissive wave with his hand. "We'll be fine, Thayer. A good night to you, the Moon be your friend." He turned to Destrian. "Well, we can walk with you for a ways at least, right?"
Destrian nodded with a grin. "Absolutely. Thank you for the dinner, Thayer." he gave her a nod, almost more of a slight bow, and then picked up his crutch and prepared to leave to his tent.

///at long last, have another reply!///
Hammer purposefully kicked the pile of blankets where Dagger was sleeping as he rose to dress himself, yawning away the last of his sleep. His kick was answered with a grumble and a string of muttered curses, but Hammer was already out of the tent by the time his slumbering brother rose from the bed. He pushed aside the tent flap and stepped outside. The sun had to to peek over the hills, but already plenty of movement could be heard in the camp. Hammer sat down on a log outside the tent to lace on his boots, somewhat surprised to find Destrian perched there, staring off into the distance. "Awake already and yet to lift a finger, eh?" He chuckled, "I give no blame, sometimes the cool morning air is good for the head."
Destrian nodded absently and continued staring off. Hammer shrugged, and was joined in the moment by Dagger, and the two headed off to report to the Marshals for their duties whilst in camp.

(Haha, it's worth the wait. ^^ )
The night had been long and uneventful. While some would say that was a good thing, for those who had to keep watch all night, it was rough. Thayer had thought her shift would have only been an hour or two longer than normal, but with the attack yesterday, the number of scouts sent out to make sure the camp was secure was raised to a near ridiculous amount. The Marshals wanted to chances that there was an army waiting in the forest, waiting for the dead of night to make their attack. So groups were sent out to search and ensure the camp's safety, leaving the rest to stand watch. Had she known this, she would have tried to get a few hours of sleep before reporting in for her shift. Ah well, one long night was nothing she hadn't handled before.
The woman walked down the rows of tents, winding her way back to the one she called hers. In the distance, the cook fires could be scented on the air. Her stomach growled, but she didn't change her destination. She would find food after an hour or two of sleep. Surely her stomach wouldn't kill her for such treachery.

Destrian found himself hobbling slowly through the outskirts of camp on his crutch. There was plenty of bustle, guards changing shifts, people scurrying about, more than a few with their heads down and hoods pulled up, though the morning's light drizzle had already died off. He stared at his reflection in a less muddy puddle, standing just off the path towards the more organized side of camp where more soldiers resided and the tents were in neat rows. This area was quieter seemingly, maybe because all the soldiers were on duty or sleeping. He gazed into the still water, not feeling sadness, or happiness, but rather something reflected in the pooled rainwater. A stillness, a calm, that was neither happy nor sad, angry nor joyful. It was simply peace.

Thayer was halfway to her tent when she spotted Destrian. At first, she was worried something was wrong. Why was he up so early? And why was he staring into a puddle? Concern overrode the need for sleep as she walked over to him. "Something the matter?" she asked, stopping in front of the man, speaking gently as to not scare him. She hadn't seen any signs that he knew she was there, so just to be safe, she didn't want to spoke him.
(Sure!)
Varik was in the large tent used for discussing battle strategies. It was pretty much his home away from home. Whenever he wasn't watching the progress of training drills or seeing that certain things got done, the dwarf could be found hunched over the map spread out on the table in the middle of the room. It was never a slow moment for him. Though he wasn't a Marshal, there was a lot riding on his shoulders being Battle Master for this camp. If one plan went wrong, it would fall on his shoulders, or, at least, that's how he would take it. It was his job to select the best people to go with the strategies he made, and if it was soldier error instead of planning error, than he would be just as liable. So he worked on, keeping close eye on both men and map, rethinking and making adjustments to any plans that had yet been put into action.

Destrian blinked and looked up at her. He gave a slight smile. "No. I'm okay, thanks. Where do I need to go to start training?" He asked, tilting his head and still smiling.
Hammer stepped up and stood at the front of the tent, Dagger by his side standing a head taller than he. He waited for just a moment before taking a breath and stepping into the tent. "Master Varik, Sir!" He saluted in the customary dwarven way, dipping his head and crossing his fists over his chest. Dagger followed suit, and they remained heads bowed, waiting for acknowledgment.

Thayer canted her head to one side, curious by his statement. "Training?" she echoed. "Now, I'm not going to tell you what to and not to do, but are you sure your leg is healed enough to start training?" He had just been released from the Healer's care yesterday, and even then it had taken some convincing. The woman didn't want to risk his wound reopening and causing him problems.
(I feel like I need to brush up on dwarf culture because I feel like a pleb in how Varik should act. XD)
Varik heard the pair as they entered the tent. Looking up from the map, he studied the brothers, recognizing who they were. He had taken the habit of learning as many names and faces as he could. If certain missions succeeded or failed, he wanted to pay respects to the ones who had put their efforts into carrying them out. "Hammer, Dagger," he greeted. Word reached the battle master that these two were heading down to help, so he wasn't surprised to see them. "Come in. I have your assignments ready for you, and we needn't waste any time with them."
