same as yall. The usual -phobe endings. mostly on tumblr, but in rl and on here too
@tre: remember that time in the old testament when God commanded priests to wash their hands after dealing with a dead body and it wasn't until like 1850 that the rest of the world started to do this too because they discovered germs
i also love it when i'm arguing about how islam isn't a peaceful religion, and ppl are immediately like "u probably haven't even read the qu'ran!" and i get to say, "i have, but clearly you haven't" Yeah I remember that. IIRC, people also used that as yet another excuse to kill the Jews: "They hardly ever get sick! They're devils, I tell you! Burn 'em" But really they were just good at washing their hands, because their God had told them to. And I do admit that I haven't read much of the Quran, because goodness gracious the English translations are not easy to read, and beyond that, I just haven't ever really sat down and started reading.

Having a blog like that on Tumblr, and with that many followers to boot... that's so radically in opposition to the terrible Tumblr hivemind. Can't imagine how much hate mail you get.

What do you guys think about parental discipline toward children? I'm biased against physical punishment personally (because it was misused on me) but what is the biblical perspective?

@jester : I agree. My parents never said things like "do as I say not as I do," or "Because I said so." Mom would always explain to us why we were not allowed to do something. So we learned, rather than become blindly obedient and resentful. People don't quite understand how little kids' minds work. A small child cannot envision being hit by a car-- the concept is too foreign to them, so it doesn't register. Such a threat meas nothing to them, so they will not look both ways before crossing a street. However, a 6-year-old does understand spankings. They know that if they do not look both ways, they will get a spanking from Mom, so the threat is enough to motivate them. I remember when I was younger, I hated wearing a seatbelt. They scratched my neck so I often avoided putting them on. My mom explained to me that accidents happened too fast for me to react. But that didn't seem possible to my 8-year-old-self. I couldn't imagine a wreck happening so fast that I wouldn't have time to reach behind me and buckle my seatbelt before we crashed. It's just how little kids think. But I did comprehend that no seat belt = spanking. Mom tried to explain why, and since I couldn't comprehend it, she had to find another way

But I did comprehend that no seat belt = spanking. Mom tried to explain why, and since I couldn't comprehend it, she had to find another way I wanted to add this last night... the thing for me was almost always disappointing my parents. I didn't fear them at all because of the physical discipline; I had respect for them and I didn't break the rules because I knew it would make them upset, and I hated seeing them that way. It was never the pain of the spankings that got me, it was the shame of knowing that I had done wrong... in their eyes, and in God's. This carried out to my teen years, of course. I've always done my best to avoid trouble, not because I fear punishment, but because I respect and love my parents and the Lord (and my own wellbeing) enough to not do those things. Anyone who says that physical punishment is automatically abuse or that it damages the child mentally has probably not seen it applied correctly. You don't stop at the physical - you have to nurture. You have to teach. You have to parent.

Put it in better words than I could have. Just positive reinforcement and just negative reinforcement don't work well. You need a fine balance.
