INTRODUCTION
It is dark at mid-day, the thick leaves of the lower canopy blocking out most of light so that only dapples illuminate the ground. The peat is moist beneath soft paws and every step, if not carefully placed, squelches in the moss. The undergrowth is composed of ferns, lichens, with the top of a bright red toadstool peeking out of the brushes from time to time. It is an environment dreary and dank, but perfectly hospitable for those who crawl along the forest floor. Among the shadows crawl cats with dark pelts and bright eyes: the warriors of MossClan. Named because of their thick fur and small stature, the cats of MossClan weave throughout the damp recesses of the forest with accuracy and precision that even the snake envies. They are the quiet warriors of the depths, stoic and viciously loyal. To stumble upon a MossClan cat is to stumble upon one of the greatest dangers in the forest.

P L O T S
Two moons after the sudden death of Fernstar , MossClan is caught in a state of limbo. Her deputy, a senior warrior then named Finchfoot, was naturally named the new leader. Though she was a popular choice for deputy, Finchstar is old and – albeit wise – fragile for a leader. This is especially poignant in comparison to Fernstar, who was young and vivacious, and whose last death (five lives lost at once after her entire body was crushed by a falling tree) came as a traumatic shock to the clan. Many warriors are worried about Finchstar being too gentle of a leader, too, as she has recently taken interest in allowing rouges to join the clan in order to swell MossClan’s numbers.
In the meantime, some cats are prepared for Finchstar to have a short leadership and are preparing to make themselves as perfect choices for deputy as possible.

TERRITORY
MossClan’s territory is primarily a large, thick, subtropical forest. The ground is most and rocky, with uneven ground and dense undergrowth coverage. In the north-center of the territory is a large meadow sparsely dotted with small trees. There are two small lakes in this meadow with a small river connecting them, the area around the river being a little more marshy than the rest of the meadow.
The Forest – separated into the North Forest and the South Forest, it is usually just called the Forest. A subtropical forest that makes up the majority of the MossClan territory.
- Fern Hollow: A flat area of land near camp that is drier than a lot of the forest and with minimals rocks. Surrounded by the ferns that give it its name. Where apprentices are trained.
- The River: a relatively wide but slow moving river that flows through the west side of the forest and feeds the falls and the stream in the meadow.
- The Falls: A good-sized waterfall on the west side of the territory fed by the river that eventually feeds the stream in the meadow. Apprentices have to jump across the falls before they are made Warriors in a traditional ceremony; just as they leap the river they are making the leap from youth to being a full warrior.
- The Moon Tree – A tree at the very north end of the territory, a long walk for the clan cats, where medicine cats go to talk to StarClan and leaders go to receive their 9 lives.
The Meadow – The meadow in the center of the territory. Approximately the size of one fourth to one fifth of MossClan’s territory.
- The Stream – a stream that runs through the meadow, fed by the river that fees the falls. Very slow moving, nearly still.
- Goose Lake – the first of the two lakes in the meadow, this one is shallower and clear, slightly curving so that it resembles a goose.
- Night Lake – the larger and deeper of the two lakes, the river dumps into here. Named because of the dark color of the water.
CAMP
The MossClan camp is a rocky hollow in the center of their territory. Marked by large boulders and fallen trees, the camp is disguised in that it is slightly lower than the ground around it, exposes tree roots created many hiding spaces surrounding the sides of the camp.
While there are multiple trees in the camp, the largest of these is located near the north-center of the camp and has a medium sized boulder in front of it. This boulder is called the “Meeting Rock” and is where the leaders stands while making announcements. Below this boulder on another rock slab is where the fresh kill pile is located.
The leaders den is located among the roots of the large tree in the center of camp, though the leader can often be found sunning among the branches.
The Warriors Den is located between two trees to the north-right of the leaders den where there is a dip in the ground; warriors rest in the dip and can sleep under the roots of the two trees. The apprentices den is in a bushy area at the very south of camp, protected by a large over-hanging boulder. To reach the apprentices den from the west side of camp one must walk around a fallen tree.
This fallen tree stretches over a cleft in the ground between the rocks, kind of like a stream without water, where the nursery and medicine cats den can be found. The medicine cats den is at the far north side of this cleft, almost under the fresh kill pile’s stone slab, in a cave that reaches far back through camp. The nursery is located across from the medicine cats den, in a shallow cave under a rocky outcropping directly underneath one of the boulders that the fallen tree rests on. The nursery is on higher ground than the rest of the cleft so that if it rains the den will not immediately flood.
The elders den is located on the west side of camp, between and underneath the raised roots of a tree, This tree has thick branches to prevent the elders from getting soaked when it rains.
FOOD SOURCES
PREDATORS:
- Badgers (common, threats if one comes in contact with their burrows though they will not hunt a cat. Can easily kill a warrior.)
- Foxes (common, will hunt kits and young apprentices, any sign of one and the leader and deputy must be immediately notified)
- Snakes (common, they are shy and will not attack a cat unless one steps on them. Most are just small black and brown woodland snakes)
- Lynxes (uncommon, will not hunt a cat but will kill one if they feel threatened)
- Beavers (rare, only found near the river. Will not hunt a cat but can easily kill one with their sharp front teeth)
- Wild Boar (rare, will chase and kill a cat. Incredibly aggressive and dangerous. Only proceed near them with extreme caution)
- Dormice (common, small golden-brown mice that are usually found in the meadow-y areas of the territory. Harder to find because of their size)
- Wood Mice (common, larger brown mice that are found in the entire territory, easy to catch)
- Red Squirrels (common, large red squirrels that occupy the wooded areas of the territory. Harder to catch because they're fast climbers)
- Songbirds (common, found in all areas of the territory, medium difficulty to catch because they can fly)
- Woodpeckers (uncommon, large birds that are difficult to catch because they are nearly always in trees, but are a great meal for the clan)
- Hedgehogs (uncommon, harder to catch because of the spiky fur on their backs)
- Weasels (uncommon, difficult to catch because of how fast and elusive they are. Catching a weasel is often a challenge given to apprentices to prove themselves)
OTHER SPECIES:
- Deer (rare, can be found grazing in the meadow and the flat areas of the forest. Not a danger)
- Humans (very rare, the occasional hiker will venture into the forest but pay the cats no mind except to take photographs)

CHARACTERISTICS
MossClan warriors tend to be rather small when compared to other cats. This is necessary, as they must be light and agile to survive in the rocky terrain. They have long tails and large paws which helps them keep a steady footing as they climb the rocks in their territory. MossClan cats are adept at climbing, and are able to scale trees with more ease the average cat. Tree-climbing is a skill emphasized in training apprentices. In line with this, MossClan cats tend to have strong and powerful back legs. Their claws are sharp but short, as they have to be completely retracted in order to not scratch against rocks.
The most common pelt colors are dark tabbies, gray, black, and tortoiseshell as the cats must be able to blend in with their dark and shadowed surroundings. Bright pelt colors such as white and ginger are major disadvantage for cats of MossClan. Nearly all cats in the clan have short fur, as long-fur can become heavy in the damp atmosphere. MossClan cats tend to have small litters due to a relatively low level of mortality among kits as they are well taken care of.
MossClan cats take tradition very seriously, and have the reputation of being strict and closed-minded. Under Fernstar the rules became slightly more relaxed, but with her sudden death it has become more conservative again.
MossClan is not a highly spiritual clan, with the exception of the Medicine Cats. Medicine cats are seem as the vessels of StarClan and are more revered than the leader, and thus remain separated from the rest of the clan socially.
TRADITIONS:
Once a month Medicine Cats travel to the Moon Tree to speak to StarClan. They are always accompanied by at least two warriors, and usually elder apprentices before they are made warriors.
The Final Leap: A ceremony before an apprentice is made a warrior where they lead across the falls.
Stardance: Perhaps the most important and revered of MossClan ceremonies. When a warrior wants to truly prove themselves, usually when a new deputy must be chosen, they will complete the Stardance. A warrior will travel to the Moon Tree, alone, and take a flower from it's branches. They will then return to camp and place the flower in front of the medicine cat. The medicine cat will accept or deny the challenge. (Since it is such a difficult journey to even find the Moon Tree, since only medicine cats and leaders know where it is, it is usually accepted.) Once this is done the leader will pick five of the strongest warriors in the clan and that night all cats old enough will journey to the Meadow and, in front of the Night Lake, the warrior will fight with the leaders chosen five. If the warrior successfully defeats all five of them, the medicine cat will crush the flower from the Moon Tree and rub it on the cats forehead. The leader will bite a hole through one of the warriors ears forever marking them as one of the strongest warriors in the clan, one who has been approved by StarClan.

RULES
The rules for the clan are fairly simple, as I assume everyone on here has at least some experience in a role-play. Presumably this means I don't have to cover the basics: follow the forum rules, no mary-sues or god-modding or power-playing, no super powers, and make your characteristics believably realistic.
I do ask that, if you join this role-play, you can write out a well-thought out post. This does not mean I want paragraphs from you. (If you want to write paragraphs you can, just like, try and stay at about 1,000 words. If you go over it's fine. I used to be a 3,000 word average post kind of person. But doing that consistently drains energy and slows down the rp.)
I also ask for you to be relatively active on the Clan. I'm in college, I have a job, I understand how hectic life gets. That's why I'm pushing for shorter posts to make the clan manageable; I want to keep the clan fun, and not a burden.
Other than that, I don't really have much to say. If you have any questions, or ideas for plots for the RP or anything, suggestions, are bored and wanna talk to someone, whatever, feel free to PM me.

Finchstar

 Description: From her youth, Finchstar has always been ambitious. Yet, she has never let herself become enamored with her desire to be the best. Rather, she simply wants to serve her clan in the best way that she can. Finchstar has always been confident in her abilities, but not overly so. She is not a prodigy. She did not complete the Stardance ritual at a young age, or impress a leader with her spectacular abilities in any one area. Rather, she is simply a wholesome cat who has spent her entire life proving herself and loyal and dedicated warrior. Finchstar puts in work; she will make an effort for her clan. Though level headed, the she-cat has a tendency to get frustrated when her clanmates don't live up to the standards she sets for them. Even if the code lies outside of what he believes to be right, he may break the code should it come to it to ensure fairness, which does make him a bit of a wildcard at times. But he's a patient tom, and good warrior, just a little strong willed when it comes to it.

Writing Example
By the time the sun had begun to make its way into the peak of the sky, Spiderblossom had at last removed herself from her nest. The slender soon to be mother had once been a relatively active young shecat, but due to her thin nature the pregnancy was beginning to take its toll on her. As she lifted herself to her paws in the mossy nursery, and poked her head through the entrance, she saw that the camp was already a buzz of activity. She winced, feeling guilty for having slept in so severely whilst everyone else was so hard at work.
Slipping through the nursery entrance fully, she found herself a comfortable spot in the sunlight to groom her dark fur. Leafbare was now at its harshest, and she knew the clan was beginning to feel the effects. For this reason, she only gave the meagre fresh kill pile little more than a passing glance. She could manage for now, and would wait until at least someone else had taken their turn. Spiderblossom tried her best to ignore the hunger pangs which were beginning to make her mouth water, not helped by the seemingly insistent kicks from the kits inside her belly. Part of her smiled, at least their feeling lively this morning, she told herself amused. A stark contrast to the exhaustion which seemed to have creeped its way into her every crevice.
Biting back a yawn, she lifted her head at the sound of approaching footsteps, to see Lightningstep approaching her, clamped in his jaws was a mouse. Small as it might have been, it made her stomach ache all the more for even the smallest morsel of something to fill it. She winced as a particularly audible rumble sounded just as he reached hearing distance of her, and the larger tom dropped it at her paws.
"Eat," his words were commanding, making it apparent that he wasn't going to take no for an answer. There was no meanness behind his words, there rarely was. But he wasn't going to let the arguably most important member of the clan currently go hungry, not when she needed food the most.
With a sigh, and half a mind to refuse. The shecat relented, lowering her muzzle and taking a bite. By the time she had taken two it was mostly bones and a tail, but it had done its job, and her hunger relented at last as she sat up. Whispering little more than a quiet, "Thankyou," to the tom as he padded away in triumph. Watching the world around her, a buzz of activity whilst she settled herself down for the day ahead. |
