a thread between myself & Ace
my character ;; Maebh Farell ;; 27 yrs old young and determined, Maebh Farrell is not the first thing that people think of when they think 'Captain of the Serpent's Bane'. keen-eyed and sly, she has a slender face with fair skin and faint freckles dotting over her small nose and her cheeks, and a small mole dots underneath her right eye. her hair is tousled and wavy, a deep brown in colour with lighter highlights and near-blonde sections due to the sun bleaching it. she usually pulls her hair into a somewhat messy fishtail braid, though her bangs frame her face and sweep from the left to the right. her left eyebrow has a single scar through it, parting the hairs rather notably. her eyes are always watching and seem wiser than one would expect from someone her age. her left eye is a rather light hazel, whereas her right is a dark blue. she has a faint scar on her right cheek in the shape of a 'c'. more scars, of course, adorn her body; she is a pirate, a fighter. from the faint scars crisscrossing her arms and crossing over her slender fingers to the harsher ones against her back and torso, and back again to the paler ones on her legs. she seems to be collecting scars, and, well - who could blame her, considering what she does for a living? it's to note that she is not a tall woman, standing at 5'1''; however, her build is lean-muscled and slender, and there's something about her that suggests she's someone to be wary of. her attire is rather simple; neat black trousers tucked into knee-high brown leather boots with a small heel, a white button-up shirt and a black tailcoat with silver buttons. she wears a tri-corner brown leather hat, too, with four deep black feathers adorning it.

——— ;; unknown age
———‘s name is unpronounceable to humans. As is the name of his language. In fact, so few creatures speak this bubbly, ethereal language that ——— hasn’t really spoken to another in years. Albeit, he has come across a number of humans since the loss of his tribe, some nice and some not, and they seem to come up with their own little names for him. But they’re too foreign to his tongue for him to remember what they were. From his midsection and upwards, he is a bright-eyed young man, with sharp brown eyes and long black hair, plus the occasional reef flower painstakingly braided into a section of the strands. His lips are full and normally shaped so one really wouldn’t expect the sets of devastatingly sharp teeth behind them. The human elements of his physique can be summed up as: lean and sleek. He doesn’t have the muscle that the others in his tribe did and that’s fine with him. He’s a reef dweller more often than not so the fish come to him and none of the land creatures have the capacity to actually get into the water and bother him. His shoulders aren’t very broad and as you move down his arms, the skin becomes smoother and shiny, until you reach his wrists, which are lined with sharp, venomous spikes. They fan out whenever he’s startled, which is quite often, but he’s never had to use them to defend himself. Starting from the bottom of his ribs and downwards, ——— is a reef shark. His tail is a dark brown and matches the rest of his more-humanly skin tone. The tip of his front dorsal and rear dorsal is painted an inky black, along with the bottom of his caudal fin.

If someone had come to her when she'd been a teenager and had told her that she'd captain a ship one day, she wouldn't have believed them. She might've even laughed them off. Once upon a time, Maebh Farrell had been born into nobility. From a young age, she'd been taught how to walk correctly, how to eat correctly, how to smile correctly. It was fitting for some, she supposed, but as the youngest of her siblings, she had very little to do aside from...marry, or something like that.
On her fourteenth birthday, she'd been lucky. While her mother and siblings had gone to do some business, she'd wandered to the port and had found that it was rather quiet. An intimidating ship had stood there and, well. She'd never been one to back down from a challenge.
She had stared a man twice her size in the eye, had grinned when he'd threatened to take her away from her family. It had not been a threat to her, but something promising, an adventure. She had been young and naive, and too foolish to see what her actions would do to her. She'd asked to be part of his crew and he'd laughed at her determination, but had ultimately rejected her demands. It was, for some reason, this point that made young Maebh set her mind on becoming a pirate. And so, when a smaller pirate ship pulled up to dock, she'd pounced at the chance.
To her surprise, she'd been accepted.
Years on, and she'd become the captain of that very ship. The Serpent's Bane was not particularly feared in the mainlands, nor was it particularly imposing - but it was swift, and the crew were clever. She was still in the early days of her captaincy, but it was...enjoyable? She wasn't sure if she'd use that word, but it was certainly something. The sea was alluring and her true love, the idea of mythological creatures lingering beneath the depths so interesting to her that she continued to read about them, even now. She wanted, one day, to be able to prove that they were real, but...well. A run-in with kraken wasn't something she wanted to happen to her beloved ship, and so she did not seek the danger. Instead, the danger sought out her.
A storm was due to arrive, that much she knew. Maebh had readied her crew for it, but none of them had been prepared for the violence of the winds. They whipped the waves so violently that the ship was blown off-course.
Not particularly good, hm?
"I," she stated to her navigator, squinting down at the map, "haven't the foggiest where we are. Do you?"
He smiled apologetically, eyebrows pulled up as if he were trying to muster up an innocent expression. It wasn't working. Instead, he groaned quietly and rested his head on the table. His head crinkled the edges of the map, and she reached over to smooth it down.
"I've heard legends." something was reluctant about his tone, but Maebh gestured for him to continue. "Well - they call it the Forbidden Sea. Ships come in, but they never come out."
She considered this for a moment, before she stood up straight and grinned.
"Looks like we'll have to be the first then, huh?" she laughed, and headed out to the deck. Calling out commands was like second-nature, nowadays; making sure sailors were doing their jobs, chasing off the Cabin Boys who had very little to do.
The Serpent's Bane crew were not people to give up. They were as determined to survive as their very own Captain, and Maebh liked to think that she was doing a good job. Hell. She probably was doing a good job, considering there hadn't been a mutiny. Yet. She scratched her chin idly and jogged over to the side of the ship, resting her elbows on the railings and peering down into the water. It was...surprisingly clear, and she could see that there were a few islands around them. They didn't look inhabited by humans, and the atmosphere was off. She frowned a little and glanced down again. Maybe this is some sort of fae trickery, she thought, though she hadn't heard of sea fae. She frowned a little and considered the little rowing boat kept on the side of the ship. She could do some recon-work and leave Ren in-charge, but it seemed unfair of her to go exploring when they weren't sure of what was around here.
"Give me something interesting," she told the water firmly.

The heron feather tilted to and fro in the soft current, the light highlighting the white and making it all but transparent. It held its form under the water quite impressively, which pleased the merboy whose chest it was clutched to immensely. He rarely had the privilege of finding such a pretty relic that maintained its beauty for such a long time, especially when submerged. To celebrate this, he was currently pulling himself along the reef's floor with his free hand, skimming through the various small creatures and dead plant life. He was searching for something he could tie together into a pretty pattern that would not only accentuate the feather's subtle pattern, but would also make it possible to tie it into his hair without losing it. Not that he'd thought much about it, but he was starting to really focus on his lack of mission. Ever since his tribe left him, he was alone and bored. Sadness wasn't a problem any longer, it was merely the lack of purpose. There were no more elderly to learn from and no more guppies to look after. He didn't have any duties, his only duty was to survive and even that wasn't a requirement anymore. Oh, the woes of being partially-sentient, partially-feral. All at once, the top of his head bumped into something long and heavy at the same time his tail hit something else. He glanced up and a sharp, delighted chirp burst from the reef shark's lips. It sent up a flurry of bubbles along with the majority of the oxygen he'd had stored for his search. Newly panicking but still far too intrigued to dart to the surface, he wriggled his way into the flourishing kelp forest he'd just discovered. Planks of kelp would hold stronger than anything he'd find in the shallows, not to mention the green would match the white beautifully. The reminder that since he was in a kelp forest meant that he'd strayed pretty far from home didn't bother him.
His claws made slicing through the plants easy but not quick. He got enthralled enough with his work that he completely forgot about not being able to breathe. It was only when he'd finished up that he noticed the low-level steady panic he'd been feeling for the past couple minutes really rise to the surface. His throat tightened up with adrenaline as he darted towards what he felt was up. There was very little light where he was and since he was a reef-dweller, he really didn't have the adaptions to determine which way he needed to go. He simply guessed. He would have been amused with the entire situation if he didn't feel like he was about to die any second. The light began filtering towards him, sending a shudder of relief wracking through him, but in an abnormal way. It seemed to be blocked out in a certain area and only coming in from the sides. Like the sky directly above him had turned to night and the rest of the world was behind schedule. He didn't have a whole lot of time to ponder these mysteries before he continued boldly towards the night. So boldly, that when he reached the surface, he knocked his head incredibly hard against... Something. A distressed gurgle tore through his chest as he reached up and shoved at the object until either he'd pushed it out of the way or he pushed himself out of the way, it really didn't matter. Either way, the sky was above him and he clawed his way there, tragically dropping his feather and kelp. His head finally popped above the surface and he got a clear look at the object and the beings on the object. They looked like him. Only less pretty. He quickly decided he'd had more than enough of a look and dove right back down into the relative safety of the ocean. If he had learned anything from his family, it was not to trust strange objects.

Few things were strong enough to move an entire ship by force alone, so when the Serpent's Bane not only jolted but moved aside, Maebh held tight to the railing and lifted her head to look over at Ren, to see if she'd imagined it. Apparently not, as his face was white as a sheet. For a moment, she considered her options - and then something flashed at the corner of her eye. She was only quick enough to see the flash of a tail, perhaps, and that was enough to set her mind on exploration. She moved away from the rails and walked towards the wheel, grinning at Ren in such a wolfish manner that he seemed to give in almost immediately.
"What do you want?" he all but groaned, firm grip on the wheel.
"I'm going to find out what just bumped us," she told him. "You're alright with being in charge while I'm gone, right? I won't be gone for long, I don't think. I just want to see if it's anything interesting."
"Interesting could get you killed." Ren was not amused and it was clear in his face, but Maebh couldn't just let this opportunity slip through her fingers. "But alright," he sighed. "Be careful."
Maebh gave him a lazy mock-salute and jogged over to a couple of the Cabin Boys to get them to help her ready the little rowing boat. It seemed that nobody particularly wanted to join her, and that was fine! She didn't mind facing this alone, and she knew that if she stayed within range of the ship, they'd help her if they needed to. She hoped it wasn't anything they needed to intervene in, though. Most likely, it was a dolphin or shark of some kind...she'd known some of them to be able to jolt and move the boat, especially when it was still recovering from a storm.
Finally, the boat was ready and both Maebh and it went down into the sea. The water was much clearer and more interesting up-close, and she absently ran her fingers through it. Warmer than most, she thought, before beginning to row. She was a little away from the boat when she stopped rowing and knelt up, ensuring that she was balanced enough to look into the water without much danger.
"Hallo?" she called softly, loud enough to be heard, but too quiet for her own crew to hear her talking to nothing. She didn't even know if it had been anything! She was just curious.
But curiosity was good. It meant that she was willing to explore, or something. While her crew were not too fond of land, Maebh didn't mind straying ashore on beaches and islands, didn't mind lingering if she had to. While there was an island nearby that she could've gone to explore, she wanted to explore the sea beneath her - a feat that seemed impossible, considering she couldn't breathe underwater. Maybe she could swim, if there wasn't anything dangerous around? She'd consider it. For now, though, she contented herself with gently keeping her fingers in the water while watching intently, keen eyes picking up any small movement.

--- soared through the water in an attempt to get away from the creatures. He'd seen them before and he knew how stupid they could be. They were dangerous and he wasn't sure if he was willing to deal with that or no. If they were malicious, they were murderous, and if they weren't malicious, there was a solid chance they would be destructive anyway. That's just how half-merpeople were. The only reason his escape was halted was the sound of an extra disturbance in the water. His pointed ears flicked nervously as he tried to focus on what it could be. Something was pulling itself through the ocean and a glance back at the large object confirmed that it was something else. A high-pitched coo of agitation vibrated through the merboy's chest as he slowly drifted with the current towards the noise, curiosity and instinct taking over.
He knew from the stories told by the elders that a long, long time ago, humans and merpeople used to exist in the same space. Until the humans grew smarter and advanced their technology more than seafolk cared to do, merpeople used to make games out of drowning the other species, sometimes even going as far to make jewelry out of their bones and hair. Before his and every other tribe was exiled from any body of water even relatively close to a human society, they had been feared a revered. Some of the especially chaotic human families even gave his tribe sacrifices every once in awhile.
Not that the little bit of history mattered now but it gave him strength as he found himself directly underneath a smaller version of big object. He cautiously let himself float closer to the surface, forcing his knowledge of before to aid him now. He felt rare, felt ethereal, felt like magic. He wanted to see himself in the light this human would see him because he knew it would think he was the most beautiful creature it had ever seen. by the time he had finished fantasizing, he was close enough to touch the object. And being that close made him notice that one of the human's hands were dangling in the water. See what he meant? Stupid. Before he could control his impulses, he reached out, wrapped his clawed hand around its wrist, and yanked with intentions of pulling it under the surface with him. Suddenly and stupidly fearless, he wanted a better look.

There was something appealing about this place...Maebh could almost see herself relaxing in the boat, perhaps napping - but that would be unfair to her hardworking crew, and so she didn't. Instead, she tried to figure out what, exactly, was - or were - in these waters. Perhaps it really had been just a shark or a dolphin; a couple of fish had darted past her fingers, but nothing else. A little disappointing.
Too warm. She used her free hand to take off her hat and, after a moment's deliberation, she shrugged off her jacket, too. That was much better. Her hand returned to the water, and she found herself absently staring into the distance.
Maebh was sensitive to touch, however - the second something different touched her hand, she inhaled sharply and -- splash. She was in the water and her hair was floating around her, she'd been lucky to have been able to react. What the f**k? she thought, shaking her head and kicking out lightly, just enough to propel herself a little so that she could readjust herself. She managed to crack open her eyes (the things she'd become immune to) and, with furrowed brows, she managed to get a look at what had dragged her down.
At first, she considered the possibility of a local who'd swum over, but...humans did not have tails, and this stranger certainly did have one. Her mind, working both to hold her breath and to figure out what, exactly, she was seeing, finally clicked. That's a mermaid, she thought. Or...a merperson? Merfolk? Wait, no. Now is not when I should think of this. She shook her head and pulled her hand away, kicking up again so that she could break the surface of the water. Once she broke it, she inhaled deeply and began to tread the water, taking a deep breath before she ducked her head down again to see what it was.
That was certainly a mermaid, and despite the (rather scary) situation, she found herself smiling.

An unnaturally large, terrifying smile swept across his sharp, exotic features as he looked over his catch. It was definitely a she and he thought she was magnificent. Of course, not as magnificent as he, but no one can expect that of any creature or they are doomed to a life of disappointment. He watched her break the surface and before he could even make an attempt to grab at her again to make sure she didn't escape, she was back under the water and looking at him. And mimicking his facial expression. Which didn't make any sense, now that he put some thought into it. His smile faded. Fear me, he chirped out at her indignantly, in that gurgly, bubbly, unintelligible language of his. An unexpected bubble of frustration bloomed in his chest and before she could respond, he darted forward, grabbed her by the shoulders, and shot off towards the reef, far away from her little object with her fellow people. He needed her more than they did, he hadn't had this kind of chew-toy/entertainment in years. Even if the concept of a year meant very little to a merperson, he was entitled and impatient at the best of times.
He wasn't totally sure how long a human could go without breathing but he assumed it was similar to his own so he didn't worry too much about letting her take a breath as he made the journey back home, through the maze of mangrove-ridden islands. He only stopped when he noticed a feather floating around near the bank of an island. He let her go to float in the middle of the two islands as he went to the pretty object and decided it was even better than the one he'd had before. Newly distracted, he began ruffling around the bank of land, tugging on vines until one came loose. He shot the female human a glare like she'd offended him as he began wrapping the vine around the base of the feather, and then braiding it into his hair.

Maebh didn't know what was said, and she was quick to assume that this creature did not speak English. Perhaps Gaelic would be more its style? Before she had a chance to resurface and try, however, she was dragged away - perhaps something she should've expected, being alone in the water. Curiosity killed the cat, her mother chided in her head. But satisfaction brought it back, her own voice retorted.
Her chest began to burn at some point, but it seemed that the mer...person had become distracted, as she was let go. Instinctively, she kicked off and broke the surface, gasping softly for air. Once oxygen had resettled into her lungs, she shook her head and looked around. This was...not close to her ship. She turned her head to look behind, but couldn't even catch a glimpse of her crew, nor her little rowing boat. Well...hm, she looked back at the merperson and blinked a few times at the glare.
"I wasn't the one who dragged me here," she told him, though she had doubts about if he understood her. Regardless, she chose to speak Gaelic over English, for she needed to practice, and this creature could not judge how she spoke it. She hesitated for a moment before she began to swim towards the land - a little self-conscious in how she swam compared to him, but she had a feeling that she'd be judged regardless. Oh, well. She pulled herself up and sat down on the bank, legs still in the water but hands firmly planted against the sand. She took a deep breath and looked down. "Humans are not water-based creatures, cara." she told him. "Can you even understand me? I don't think so."
That meant one-sided conversation, or something. Was he even listening? She squinted at him to try to figure out, shaking her wet hair out of her eyes.

Well, it seemed she was okay. The merboy looked over at her and watched her gasp for air as his fingers wove around the feather, expertly securing it to his person. He loved pretty things and when he lost one, he would tell you that it hurt worse than that one time he lost his entire family. He bristled at her, showing his teeth in a way he hoped was threatening, but from what he'd seen of this crazy human, she wasn't about to be intimidated. Stupid female does not need to keep making noise since I don't know what she's saying and she doesn't know what I'm saying. He spoke in a series of clicks, chirps, and bubbling noises that came from his chest. It almost sounded like his lungs were filled with water. His speech was cut off a little short as he observed her flounder towards the shore. An unmistakably amused snort ripped through him as he showed off his teeth in a grin and pulled himself after her. He lingered in the water next to her legs, staring up at her with his dark, dark eyes and switching his facial expressions between awe and disdain, especially when it came to her legs. Very strange-looking, awkward things. You are very bad in the water. Might as well not live if you don't do well in the water.

"I'll take that as a lack of understanding," despite how unnerving this whole situation was, she smiled and looked around. It seemed that the island wasn't much, but she didn't think they were too far from her ship. "Well, I don't speak your language, either."
And water was wet. Maebh crossed her legs and rested her elbows on her thighs, leaning forward so that she could study the merperson a little more. She was rather sure that he was a he, but then again - were they like humans? She wasn't sure. She watched his expression change and grinned. I'm dreaming, she thought, absently pinching her arm. Nope. Not dreaming. This is real. I'm staring at a merperson. I was just...kidnapped? By a merperson?
Hmm. Not the best situation at all, but she couldn't quite bring herself to care. She took note of the way he seemed to have decorated himself. Like jewellery. With that in mind, she pushed up her sleeve a little and took off her little leather bracelet. She had multiple of them up her forearms, always hidden by her shirts - oh hell, her jacket and hat were still on that boat. Maebh paused what she was doing and squinted thoughtfully. Well...it would take them until the next morning to fear for her safety, so she could be here for a little longer. Nodding to herself, she outstretched her arm with the bracelet, offering it to the merperson. A peace treaty of sorts, she supposed.
"This is a bracelet," she said, aware that he didn't understand but continuing nonetheless. She emphasised bracelet with the hope that he'd repeat it or something. "You wear it on your arm," she gestured to her own bracelets.

The mer scrunched his nose in discomfort when she crossed her legs. That didn't look right, not in the slightest. He'd never seen any creature's lower half do that. That doesn't look good, don't do that, he instructed. Reaching over and being very conscious of the spikes lining his forearms, he uncrossed her legs so they looked a little more natural. He still didn't have any idea what he planned to do with this person. It wasn't like he needed her for anything. He wasn't starving and he wasn't in need of any sort of slave, he was just bored. Oh, well. That was a good enough reason for him to keep her until her inevitable demise. What did humans even need to eat? He'd figure it out. By the time he had pulled himself out of his thoughts, she was showing him something. He squinted his eyes and tilted his head forward to get the closest look possible. After he determined it was made out of animal hide and quite nicely crafted, he leaned back again and met her gaze. When she didn't pull her hand back, he realized it was a gift. His teeth glinted in the sun as he reached up and snatched the bracelet from her, staccato chirps of happiness bouncing from his throat. He eyed her many other and mimicked them by sliding the object over his wrist. It didn't work on his wrist since it restricted his spikes, which was uncomfortable, so he slid it further up his arm. It kind of cut off his circulation but he managed to get it just beneath his elbow. Thank you, he burbled, totally ignoring the fact that she was currently trying to coax him into saying something.

When he moved her legs, she laughed - she couldn't help it. To respect the mer's wishes, she kept her legs straight (although it was a little uncomfortable for her), and watched with mild fascination as he put on the bracelet.
"Those look like they could kill a man," she mused. Yes, Maebh was aware that she was speaking to herself - but exposure to the language helped! She'd learned a couple of languages from her men and they'd learned English from her and the rest of the crew; perhaps it could be the same for another creature? Although...perhaps he wasn't made for the human tongues, despite having a human upper-half? This thought made her pause, but she shook her head to get rid of it. "Well, I'm glad you found a place for it."
She pushed herself up from the sand so that she was standing, and turned to look at the patch of land behind her. The island was likely a smaller one - it didn't have a mountainous range on it, and the larger one had been quite far from her ship. With this in mind, she squinted into the forest. It wasn't as dense as she'd expected, with light flickering through the trees.
"I don't think it'll be too hard to go through." again, her words were spoken allowed. Maebh turned to look at the mer and grinned at him. "Well, cara. You probably don't want to apologise for dragging me here but I, for one, am going to pretend that you're apologising to me," she crouched down on the sand and tilted her head at him. "My crew won't worry for a little while, so I can stay for some time - but I will eventually have to go."
Speaking to a non-human like he understood, she wasn't sure why she did it. Maybe it was some vague hope that he'd start mimicking her and learn, or something.
