A b o u t T h i s R o l e p l a y
This roleplay is going to be a bit different from most other wolf roleplays on these forums. It does not follow one particular pack, but instead focuses on any wolves in this area. The social structure and lifestyle of these wolves is more similar to that of real-life wolves. Instead of having one continuing pack that is set up more like a "wolfified" Clan, this roleplay will have numerous packs, none necessarily as well-established or stable as your typical Clan, each of which only exists because its members do. Packs won't have the same kind of established territory as Clans, either- they must constantly fight for their dens, their territory, and their prey, competing with neighboring packs for resources and chasing out lone wolves that venture too close. This is intended to be a harsh roleplay, where characters will die often from the elements or from combat.
Here I will briefly explain the set-up of a normal wolf pack and its ranks. A "pack" generally consists of an alpha male and female- the only breeding pair in the pack- and their offspring. Most offspring, especially the females (which are slightly less common than males) will leave the pack after two or three years, looking to find their own mate and establish their own territory and pack. Some, however, may choose to remain with their birth pack indefinitely; they will not take mates, though females may sometimes breed with passing lone wolves (though this is uncommon). When one of the alphas dies, the remaining alpha may either take a new mate, or might be replaced by another wolf in the pack and their mate (generally the beta, who is the most dominant wolf besides the current alpha). The alpha can also be replaced if the pack chooses to collectively chase them out, or if another wolf challenges them for the position and wins. Besides the alphas and beta, the only established role is that of omega- the lowest-ranking wolf in the pack (lower even than pups), who is generally somewhat ostracized from the pack and really only remains because their chance of survival on their own is slim. The rest of the wolves do have a hierarchy, but each doesn't so much have a specific rank. There may occasionally be extra wolves in the pack, besides the alphas and their offspring, such as an aging former alpha who is tolerated in the pack, siblings of the current alpha, or (very rarely) a submissive unrelated adult. Adopted pups are also not uncommon, should something happen to their birth parents.
R o l e p l a y R u l e s
The rules of this roleplay are pretty simple and straightforward, and mostly common sense. Obviously, all forum rules apply. Keep the vulgarity, gore, and all that stuff at a reasonable level (like half of us are adults here, or close to it, so I'm not gonna say don't be vulgar/gory at all, but like, keep it reasonable). Don't troll, try to get along with everyone (at face value at least), don't use/control other peoples' characters, don't steal, etc. etc.
As for characters, keep them realistic, in appearance, personality, experiences, and all that. That goes without saying. As for personalities, give them a balance of good and bad traits. Though you don't really see a whole lot of Mary-Sues anymore, what I do see a lot of are extremely emo characters who have had only bad things happen to them, are always outcasts, are always depressed, etc. etc. Don't make your character perfect, but also don't make them over-the-top gloomy and imperfect. It's annoying, and no one is gonna wanna do anything with that character. Of course, some characters will have bad things happen to them, sometimes a lot of bad things. Some of them will be sad/depressed. Some will be outcasts to some degree. The key is that some will have some of these things happen. Not many will have all of these things happen. Keep it realistic guys.
On the note of characters, I feel that I should make a rule about packs vs. lone wolves. While there will obviously be quite a few lone wolves in this roleplay- either looking to establish their own pack, or just preferring to be alone- the majority of the wolves should be in a pack. I don't want to see this roleplay end up populated with 14 lone wolves but only a few packs with a few members each. There should be quite a few packs of varying sizes, and a few lone wolves. So, if possible, try to fit your characters into an established pack (unless they're the alpha of their own pack).
Literacy is also a very important aspect of this roleplay. This is not an advanced/literate roleplay, but I do expect everyone to be at least semi-literate. That is, I expect pretty good grammar (it has to be easily legible at least; occasional mistakes are fine, but I don't want major misspellings every sentence, with terrible punctuation all the way through, for example). You should be able to consistently be able to write a decent-sized paragraph (like, 5 sentences or so), with a little more or less here and there depending on the situation. And finally, you should be able to actually carry a plot and contribute to the story instead of just floating around trying to bait other people into interaction.
Next, activity. I'm not gonna make a strict "be on this often or I'll kick you" rule because that's silly; activity comes and goes overall. Some days or weeks will be more active than others. I just expect you to be on enough to stay involved. When people start to forget your character exists is when I'm gonna start putting out warnings. Of course, people who hold high ranks, like the alphas of a pack or a wolf who is integral to a particular plot, I will expect to be on more. Not constantly, but frequently enough to resolve any situations which may require your character. If you are unable to do this, you will have to relinquish that rank/role.
And finally, chatting. Obviously, I expect you to separate our out of character talk from your in-character talk using brackets, parentheses, or some kind of similar symbol. I expect you to play nice with one another. And though I do hope that you will become friends over the course of this roleplay, I would like it if you would keep chatting on this page to a minimum. For long, continuing, and drawn-out conversations, please take it to PM or another thread. I've seen way too many good roleplays killed off by pages and pages of chatter with no roleplay- don't let that happen. I don't want to see more than 3 or maybe 4 consecutive posts with no roleplaying on them.
E n v i r o n m e n t
Season: Midsummer Moon Phase: Half Moon Weather: Fairly warm, but with a cool breeze. There are dark clouds on the horizon.
This roleplay takes place far in the north, where it is rarely warm and the winters are harsh. Here, prey is scarce and for much of the year and inadequate shelter could mean death. The wolves who call this area home must fight for everything they have, and life is often violent and short. This area consists mainly of pine forests (mixed with a few deciduous trees here and there) as well as open tundra. The area is divided by two rivers, which meet and form one, as well as a set of cliffs. The area below the cliffs is called the Lowlands, while the plateau above is called the Uplands. Within each area are a few more locally-known landmarks, described below.
- Perhaps one of the most important features of the area, and one of the things which attracts so many wolves, is the Caribou Trail. Each spring, a massive herd of caribou migrates from the west to its summer grounds, and in the autumn, they return from the east. As the caribou provide one of the best sources of food for the wolf packs, these times, and this area, is probably the most integral to their survival.
- In the west, just north of the Trail, is Claw Rock. This is a large outcropping of rock which juts from the tundra, and many have said it looks like a giant claw, thus giving it its name. It is sheltered and provides a good view of the surrounding land. This, plus its proximity to the Caribou Trail, makes it one of the most sought-after denplaces in the area.
- North of Claw Rock is an area called the Floodplains, which sits between the river and a large stream just south of it. During the summer and autumn, the ground is a bit damp and marshy, and though there are no trees there are lots of rocks and boulders here. In the spring, snowmelt from the distant mountains, and surrounding areas, causes the river to burst its banks, covering the entire Floodplain in shallow water. It might not seem dangerous, but wolves who are unaware could be caught in a flash flood, and the freezing water can cause hypothermia if a wolf stays in for too long.
- North of the Floodplains are two more areas of interest. The Geyser Ponds are precisely what they sound like: ponds created from the water of a pair of geysers. The water here is warm and clear, making it a fun place to play, especially in the summer. However, wolves should be careful not to be too close to a geyser when it erupts, as the water that comes from them is boiling and can cause severe burns, even leading to death.
- Very near the Geyser Ponds is Jaw Hollow. This area is named for a similar reason to Claw Rock, except wolves say that these massive stones, surrounding a dip in the land, look like massive teeth, about to swallow the hollow whole. It is extremely well-protected not only from enemies but from other wolves, and with clearly-defined edges, it is a perfect place to raise young pups.
- Downriver, past where the two rivers meet, is a place called Riverleap. This is known as the best place to cross the river, especially in the winter when the waters are extremely cold, or the spring when they are strong and rough. Many large boulders sit no more than a short leap apart from one another, making fantastic stepping stones for adult wolves. They should be careful in the winter, though, as the ice makes them very slippery!
- South of Riverleap, in the tundra, is another large boulder hill that makes a sought-after denplace. This one is called Hoof Rock, for a few reasons- the main one being that its large, flattish structure is reminiscent of a caribou hoof, which also relates to its proximity to the trail. Its only drawbacks are its visibility and lack of defense, but even so, it makes good shelter in winter and has good access to food and water.
- Though there are many narrow, rocky, and precarious trails which lead up the cliffs to the Uplands, the safest route is the Forest Pass. It is a wide, grassy slope which makes an easy walk from the Lowlands to the Uplands, and vice-versa. This is the trail that most animals use, prey and predator alike, and that makes this a desirable but dangerous territory to have.
- Farther northwest on the cliffs is the Waterfall. Here, the water from the northern river roars over the cliffs, sending spray and fog rolling into the surrounding forest. The area both above and below the waterfall is considered dangerous, because either part of the river might easily sweep a wolf off their paws. In the case of the Uplands part, if the river doesn't drown them, then it will send them over the falls to their almost certain demise.
- Upriver from the Waterfall is the Bridge. This is another good place for wolves to cross the river; however, many are rather disconcerted by it since it was created by humans, and thus refuse to use it. However, it is completely safe year-round, and underneath can even be a decent place for shelter in an emergency.
- The remains of an old gravel road leads from the north to the bridge, and then west to the husk of what used to be a human building. This burned house was destroyed by fire many years ago, though no living wolf remembers if it had been abandoned beforehand or not. Like the bridge, it can be a good place for emergency or rudimentary shelter, but most wolves steer clear because of its relationship with humans.
- Surrounding the burned house is a place known as the Deadforest. This was once a pine forest no different from the others in the area, but was burned down at the same time as the house. No one is sure if the fire originated from the house, or if the house was just another thing damaged in the flames. Regardless, the forest still has not healed, and the blackened trunks of trees and ashy ground remain to this day.
- East of the river is another hollow surrounded by rocks. This one is called The Vale, and like Jaw Hollow is a lush and protected dip in the land. Its easy access to water, as well as sheltered environment, make it a perfect denplace. Its only flaws are its distance from the Caribou Trail, and its proximity to Deadforest and the human structures.

Claimed Territories:
- Saghani's pack claims Hoof Rock as their denplace, and marks from Riverleap to the edge of the forest west of their den as their territory. - Nix's pack claims the area near the Waterfall and Forest Pass. Their territory takes up the forest between the river and the cliffs southeast of the waterfall, spreading just past Riverleap. Their denplace is curve in the cliffs east of the waterfall, in a natural cave. - Ikkuma's pack claims the tundra around Jaw Hollow, their denplace, as their territory, a ways past the Geyser Ponds but not all the way to the forest.

Nukilik was driven out of her birth pack many seasons ago by her father, Sangilak, so that she could not challenge her sister Nix for leadership of the pack. Nukilik has lived as a desperate lone wolf ever since, but this has not diminished her desire for revenge. She will do whatever it takes to gain the strength needed to make Sangilak and Nix suffer for their offense, and is not above using and manipulating others to achieve this.
Ikkuma is a cruel and harsh leader, and those who follow his command are just as ruthless. Hungry for territory and strength, they will fight and kill others for everything that they have- prey or territory, or simply to get them out of the way. Despite the fact that their territory has continued to grow steadily ever since Ikkuma established his pack, it seems as though the alpha and those loyal to him can never be sated.

S a g h a n i ' s P a c k
Territory: Their border stretches along the west bank of the river, and from Riverleap in a roughly straight line down to the edge of the forest west of Hoof Rock.
Denplace: Hoof Rock
Members Alpha:
- Saghani (Aphelyon ) - A fairly large but slender she-wolf with a gradient gray pelt and yellow eyes. Her pelt has a bit of a brownish, tawny tinge to it in some places, and the fur along her spine and at the end of her tail is black, white it fades to white on her muzzle and lower legs. Saghani is from farther north, and traveled far in search of a suitable mate, and territory to raise her pups. She eventually did find what she was looking for, her and her mate driving out another, weak pack to claim this territory as their own. Though she has had to fight for it many times, she has managed to hold on to it for two winters now, and has had two litters here. 66 moons old.

Territory: Their territory takes up the forest between the river and the cliffs southeast of the waterfall, spreading just past Riverleap.
Denplace: A curve in the cliffs east of the waterfall, in a natural cave.
Members Alpha:
- Nix (Sparkly ) - Light grey, with dark grey paws, fading into light grey about halfway up her legs. She has smoky grey markings on her face, and piercing, leaf-green eyes. She was given the leadership of the pack when Sangilak stepped down, after his mate Aga was killed. 56 moons. Parents are Sangilak and Aga; mate is ?; son is Kesuk. Sisters are Nukilik and Erebus.
Alpha's Mate:
Beta:
Adult Pups:
- Kesuk (Aphelyon ) - A slender, thick-furred white male with yellow-amber eyes, a long tail and legs, and thicker fur around his neck and along his spine. The tip of his tail is brushed with black. He has lithe muscles and is built for running rather than power. Kesuk was born into his current pack and has not yet left. He has no interest in ever finding a mate, and has taken up a comfortable middling rank in his pack- he is not eager to show dominance over others, but does not allow himself to be pushed around either. 28 moons old. Parents are Nix and [Nix's mate].
Young Pups:
Omega:
- Erebus (flamerune) - Erebus is a fairly small wolf, thin and short. Her fur is the usual gray and tan color, and it is usually covered in dirt. Her eyes are a deep brown color, tinted with light amber specks. Erebus has always been part of Nix’s pack, but she is not particularly powerful or fast, relying on brains rather then brawn, hence her rank. 48 moons old. Parents are Sangilak and Aga; elder sisters are Nukilik and Nix.
Other:
- Sangilak (Aphelyon ) - A massive but ancient white wolf with blue-gray eyes and thick fur which is a bit darker on his spine, ears, and the end of his tail. His face, ears, and flanks are heavily scarred, and though he used to be powerful and muscular, that strength is beginning to wane in his old age. Sangilak was the alpha of his pack for many years, and had four litters during this time with his mate Aga. Aga was eventually killed by a bull elk on a hunt, and rather than fight for his dominance and try to find a new mate, Sangilak stepped down as alpha and allowed one of his elder pups to take his place. 101 moons old. Mate is Asa. Pups are Nix, Nukilik, and Erebus.
I k k u m a ' s P a c k
Territory: Their territory stretches from northwest of Jaw Hollow to well past the Geyser Ponds, though not quite to the forest.
Denplace: Jaw Hollow
Members Alpha: - Ikkuma (Aphelyon ) - A large light brown male wolf with gleaming orange eyes. His muzzle, lower legs, lower belly, and a patch on his chest are white. He is extremely muscular, and has several scars on his face and flanks. Ikkuma leads a rather harsh pack- he rewards his pups which are strong, and encourages them to bully and exploit those who weaker or submissive. He believes that only the strongest should survive, and thus his pack has no place for those who are weak, or not useful. Even so, any of his offspring which seem as though they might eventually surpass him in strength are generally met with... unfortunate accidents. He is currently on the search for a new mate; Pikatti, his previous mate, died of sickness only a few moons, and most of her litter from this year followed shortly thereafter. 76 moons old. Mate was Pikatti; pups are Mauja, Nauja, Ukiak, and Iqniq.

Name: - Nukilik (Aphelyon ) - Nukilik is a large, fairly well-muscled female with a thick light gray coat, which is white on her face, legs, belly, and tail. Her eyes are a dull amber in color. She has slightly darker fur running from her nose, up her forehead, and down her back to the base of her tail. Nukilik was born into Nix's pack (Sangilak's at the time) and quickly proved her dominance over the others in her litter. It seemed she would be the alpha after her parents passed, but when her mother died and Sangilak chose to step down, he instead passed the leadership to her younger sister, Nix. Nukilik attempted to challenge Nix for the alpha position, but Sangilak claimed she was too cruel to be alpha, and instead chased her out of the pack altogether. Though it has been several seasons since then, Nukilak still harbors resentment and is determined to have revenge on Sangilak and Nix. 56 moons old. Parents are Sangilak and Aga; sister is Nix.

(I actually just realized an issue with Nix: she is very young. So, she likely would only have been alpha for a short time, unless you bump up her age. As it stands, she's actually only 4 moons older than Kesuk, who's supposed to be her son. She should be 2-3 years older than him, at least. Also, her age doesn't fit with the seasons. In order to fit the role, she should probably be a bit older, probably around 40 moons. And then we could say this is her first summer as alpha, and I can change Kesuk to being her younger brother instead of son.)

Sangilak lay on a rocky ledge outside the cave which made up his pack's den, the trees forming a mottled pattern of sunlight and shadow across his pale pelt. With his front paws hanging over the side of the stone, his long coat neatly groomed, and a contented expression, the old wolf looked serene and noble at his watchful post. His ears flicked back and forth at the different sounds in the forest, though his eyes remained fixed on his daughter, Nix- the pack's current alpha. He watched as she surveyed the hills and forest around them, and wondered briefly if she would call a hunt today. A few members of the pack had dragged back a young doe the day before yesterday, but most of it had been eaten, and what was left was beginning to spoil. Each wolf could, with relative ease, catch themselves a rabbit or squirrel, or other small prey, to hold themselves over until the next hunt, but it would only sustain them for so long.

Kesuk surveyed his pack's territory from a vantage point nearly halfway up the cliffs, noting the dark clouds on the horizon and the cool breeze that ruffled his pelt at this height. After the sun had risen, he had climbed up the narrow path to this ledge, which rested only a wolf-length or so above the treetops. It was something he wasn't really supposed to do, as the path could be precarious and sometimes treacherous- a loose stone or sudden, strong wind could send a wolf falling to their doom. Still, Kesuk was confident and surefooted, and climbed with one side of his white pelt practically glued to the cliffside, taking each pawstep slowly to test the stone before putting down his full weight. He climbed up here with relative frequency- perhaps a few times a moon- to get an idea of what the territory as a whole was looking like. Though they could survey from the ground, Kesuk found that this bird's eye view offered a refreshing and more complete perspective. From here, he could see nearly all the sky, and all the forest, and even beyond his own pack's territory. If he was lucky, he could catch glimpses of the neighboring wolves, or potential prey, or potential dangers. Now, all he glimpsed were the gathering storm-clouds, and from the speed of the winds and clouds above concluded that it would likely rain that night or early the next day.

Sangilak noticed the look of worry that crossed Nix's face as she gazed into the forest. He wondered if she was concerned about prey- after all, even though food was plentiful in the summer, hunting could be dangerous, especially when going after larger prey like elk or moose, which could kill a wolf if it wasn't careful, or was just that unlucky. Still, it was a necessary fact of life, and what he saw in her eyes was a deeper worry- a more personal concern. Was she wondering about Nukilik? He wasn't sure if it was for concern for her absent littermate, or fear of her. Nukilik had hardly been seen since she had been cast out, except for one or two moderately hostile encounters around the borders. The pack knew the she-wolf was still in the area- the occasionally caught whiffs of her scent near the edges of their territory- but thus far, besides a few small scratches and bruises from their encounters, she had proved mostly harmless. Bitter, perhaps, but little threat to the pack. At least, not by herself.
The aging white wolf got to his paws, arching his back in a stretch before slipping down from his ledge and trotting over to Nix, his head bowed in a gesture of submission to the alpha. He gave her chin a lick- a sign of of affection, as well as respect. He followed where she had been looking into the shadowed trees, silent for a moment, before turning his attention back to the younger wolf. "You know she won't bother us. She doesn't have the strength. So long as we stay unified and alert, we are safe."

Sangilak let out a snort at the suggestion. "If I thought that she could find a mate who would stay with her, then I would be worried. And what information does she even have to give? She's been gone for longer than two winters now, and it's not like we have any devastating secrets that could ruin us if they were to give out." He shrugged. "The worst she could really tell is where our den is, and that's not even so much of a secret. After all, we could find Hoof Rock or the Vale easily enough if we decided to attack those packs." He let out a sigh. "It's not unreasonable to have concerns, but don't let thoughts of her worry you unduly. She's worth no more of a concerning thought than the brown bear near Forest Pass, or the coming winter. Less so, even."

(Is she adopted? Because normally even the omega would be related.) ➤ CHATTING adopted is good, I’m just usually hesitant to related to another persons character without permission.
