{ don't expect a post this bloated again xDD i got carried away! }
“Don’t worry, Riley. Liam will be glad to see you!”
Such were the reassurances of Edward Chandler, Liam’s father, as they followed the snowy drive toward their winter getaway - the family cabin, relic of many a Christmas holiday adventure. The whole family had been going there almost as long as Liam had been alive. And ever since his little sister Emilia had been born, it had become a place of chaos as well. The fun, exciting sort of chaos kids excited for Christmas got up to, of course. Lydia Chandler, Liam’s mother, was driving and keeping a close eye on the road ahead. The white flakes fell relentlessly and covered the world in cold and silence and white. Fortunately, they’d taken this drive for years upon years.
“It’s too bad you couldn’t see Emilia again too. She always did like you…” Lydia mused. Emilia, at the ripe of eighteen, decided to skip out on the annual vacation at the cabin, opting instead to go off to a ski resort with a group of her friends. Liam certainly hadn’t protested against that and neither had Lydia or Edward. She was technically an adult now and denying her a trip of her dreams was a surefire way to get her to hate them forever. Or at least for the next couple of months. Of course, they’d told her to be careful and be safe and all those parent-ly things. If she broke their trust, it was safe to say the young woman wouldn’t be going on ski trips without parental guidance anytime in the future.
Ever the talker, Edward interjected. “So how’s college going? Or have you graduated already? …Liam’s going to law school next fall. But what was it that you wanted to do..? For the life of me I can’t remember!” He laughed good-naturedly at that. It’s as good a time as any to mention that Liam’s father was the kind of happy-go-lucky, rarely shuts-up kind of guy. He hadn’t a harsh bone in his body, one of the gentlest souls around really, and worked as a high-school teacher. Lydia was quite the opposite – a bright, strict, serious woman (with an obviously kind and patient heart or else how would she be married to someone like Edward?) who technically ruled the house. She was a lawyer, and had inspired (perhaps pushed) her son towards studying law in the first place.
Not too long after the chatter, the cabin was in sight. Warm, yellow, light bathed the snow below and set the house aglow. It was like a sight in a cheesy Christmas flick.
“Oh, we’re here!” Lydia announced, pulling up to the driveway. They parked and then got out of the car. Edward turned toward Riley as they stepped into the snow.
“Oh, do you need any help with your bags?”
Lydia had already set off for the doors, giving the cabin door a firm knock. The door was locked. No answer. Another knock, louder this time. Still no answer.
“Oh, honestly, William! It’s four-thirty!” Ouch, pulling out the full name. A sure sign that Mama Chandler was annoyed. She gave one final knock, and it barely made a sound before the door swung open.
A tall, sleepy-eyed man stood in the doorway, decked in an ugly beige Christmas sweater, black glasses threatening to slide off his face. A yawn escaped his lips, which he quickly attempted to stifle. “Sorry.” He said, blinking away the rest of his tiredness. His brown eyes slid from his mother to the car and then – awareness taking a second to sink in – they suddenly grew wide.
“Riley?” he blurted in utter disbelief. He rubbed at an eye, wondering if he was still dreaming for a moment. But no, it was her. Standing there in the flesh with a bag and his father smiling sheepishly back at him.
“What the hell guys?!”

(Ah don't worry about it. I love his parents XD)
Riley had tried, oh she had most definitely tried, to think of an excuse to get out of the trip. When she was first given the invitation, a frozen dinner of chicken tenders in hand, she had knew it would be a bad idea. She'd been the one that had ended their relationship and she hadn't seen her ex since. She didn't know what he'd been up to or how he'd been feeling. She'd pulled everything she could think of, Including a car that just wasn't working right, and finally gave in when his parents offered to drive her. They knew Liam best, right? If they thought this was a good idea, well maybe she should listen to his parents.
Riley had made her way home and packed a bag before enjoying her frozen meal for one. Of course, her thoughts had been filled with this trip and she had begun to convince herself that it wouldn't be that bad. After all, she'd regretted breaking up with him after such a rash decision and had recently realized she still had feelings for the man.
So by the time his parents had picked her up, she was smiling. Even if Liam didn't want her back, she got along with his parents and could enjoy a nice Christmas with them.
Currently, she was battling between her thoughts about her ex and trying to keep up with his father's conversation. "And I'll be glad to see him," she said, hoping his father was right about what Liam would think.
And then his mother mentioned his sister. "Oh, well I'm sure I'll be able to see her again at some point. I really did enjoy spending time with her." Everything Riley had said so far was the truth. She had enjoyed Emilia's company and some part of her was excited to see Liam again. Maybe it was just the Christmas spirit, it was her favorite holiday, but the woman had become optimistic. His parents sure seemed to have high hopes for the vacation.
"It's going well, Mr. Chandler," Riley began. She was glad to hear Liam was still planning on studying law. "I'm going to school for veterinary medicine. I hope to work specifically in equine medicine someday." Riley had had a lifelong love of horses, riding and working with them from a young age. Even now, she was leasing a horse from a friend along with attending college and working at a grocery store.
She found herself smiling as the cabin came into view. Her own father enjoyed those Hallmark Christmas movies around this time of year and if Riley had been able to go home this year, she knew she'd be seeing plenty of similar scenes in his movies. It felt almost... magical to be there in real life.
When the car came to a stop, she exited and thanked the man for his help before pulling a bag from the trunk. Riley had turned towards the cabin and began to make her way towards Liam's mother, but paused when the door swung open.
It was him.
She never thought she'd see him again, but her eyes went up and down his body in a quick motion, settling for a moment in the ugly Christmas sweater. He was clearly more into the spirit than Riley, at least he looked like he was in the spirit. She was decked out in a maroon sweatshirt, displaying the name of her barn, jeans, thin black gloves, and some earmuffs to keep the cold out.
She opened her mouth to greet Liam, when she was met with his words.
Okay.
Maybe he wasn't expecting her.
Her face turned bright pink, a mixture of the cold air and embarrassment to be caught up here when he clearly wasn't as excited as his parents had promised. She awkwardly kicked some snow before speaking up.
"Uh, hi, Liam. Its, uh, been a while," she said. Wow, nice job stating the obvious. She cleared her throat a bit. "You see, I couldn't make it home this year, so your parents invited me up so I wouldn't have to spend Christmas alone." She didn't mention his parents promise that he'd be excited to see her again. Clearly they had misread their son's thoughts on the situation.
She finished the walk, appearing only steps behind his mother. This time, however, she stayed silent. She wasn't quite sure how much she wanted to say to him in front of his parents. She truly did like the older couple. She'd been close with them when she had dated their son. She hadn't talked to them or his sister since breaking up with Liam.

{ squishing too much in one post @ me xDD next post will inevitably be shorter }
“Language.”
Liam glared mutinously at his mother’s command before muttering a quick “sorry” by force of habit. But how was he supposed to feel? He didn’t care for the reason; Riley of all people had no business being here. This was their family cabin not the ex-girlfriend and family cabin. She wasn’t a part of their family, and she most certainly wasn’t his friend. He’d actually been looking forward to this Christmas vacation, eager to be away from his chaotic apartment home and the stress of university. He could do without the cheesy and saturated holiday atmosphere (his sweater might make you think otherwise, but in reality he was only wearing it because it was warm, comfy, and perfect for a nap) but he wasn’t going to complain about it. This however? This he would complain about.
Oblivious to the tension in the atmosphere, or perhaps trying to diffuse it, his father chuckled as he made his way up to the door. “Sorry we weren’t able to say anything sooner, champ…”
“That’s right,” Lydia affirmed after Riley stated her (lame) reason for being here. “We’re not so heartless that we’d let Riley spend the holiday alone.”
That’s not our problem. Liam thought, the mutinous look refusing to leave his face. Instead he said, “Why doesn’t she just call her own parents or something? She can’t stay here with us.”
“And why not?” His mother challenged.
“Because…” Because she hasn’t talked to any of us in years. Because she broke up with me. Because I hate her. “Because this is our cabin! The Chandler cabin! Not hers!”
“Oh, honestly, William. It will be fine.” Lydia pushed past him and into the warmth of the cabin, Edward following suit, and it was safe to assume Riley would quickly do the same. Temper flaring, Liam was tempted to glare at her the whole walk, but instead resolved for doing anything but looking at her. A childish part of him wanted to close the door on her, but since he knew he’d likely earn a swat from his mother if he did that, he reluctantly kept it open until she’d walked through.
If the exterior looked like a Hallmark movie, the interior certainly did as well. Christmas decorations hung along the walls, the tables, the stairs leading up to the second floor. A white Christmas tree was decked out in ribbons and tinsel. A hearth lit up the room and kept it cozy and warm. A large sofa with a wrinkled blanket on it (Liam’s previous napping place) rested near a flat-screen tv, where RuPaul’s Drag Race was on pause. …Alright, so that last one wasn’t very Christmas-like. Sue him.
“You can use the spare bedroom upstairs, last door on the left. Emilia usually stays there, but since she’s not here, you’re welcome to it.” Lydia stated, removing her coat and purse, and, after pausing a moment turned to Liam. “Will you show her the room, Liam?”
“What? Why me?” He automatically protested.
“We’re, ah, going to get started on dinner.” His father interjected, smiling in that sheepish manner. It was only 4:30, but this wasn’t actually anything new. His family had always had supper early.
Liam glared at him, before sighing in annoyance and making his way for the stairwell. “Hurry up,” he snapped at Riley.

Now Riley was most definitely regretting joining his parents on this vacation. And any hope she had that Liam had returned her feelings were now gone. She felt herself deflating slightly before she raised her chin and puffed out her chest. She wasn't just going to let him defeat her that easily.
"I did call my parents, actually, Liam," she began, wanting to counter his point. "They couldn't come out here because our family is too big to relocate for one person," she said. With six siblings and two parents, Riley had come to learn that it was hard to make sacrifices for one person. Especially when others had already spent plenty of money to get home. The twins had come home from their first year of college. Finn and Kate had met up somewhere and went home together. Elijah had even brought his entire family home. Riley hadn't seen his kids in years and was excited to catch up with her young niece and nephew, but that wasn't an option any more.
While she did see Liam's point, she wasn't going to back down. If she had to, she would spend the entire time hanging out with his parents. She liked his parents. She just knew she'd refuse to let Liam ruin her Christmas spirit. It was her favorite holiday and there was no reason to let him be a Scrooge. Eventually he'd warm up to the Christmas spirit, wouldn't he? Nobody can avoid the joy of Christmas for long.
Riley walked through the door, enjoying the warmth of the cabin. She shut the door behind her and looked at his parents. "You two have a lovely cabin," she said, giving them each a genuine smile. She looked around, admiring the decorations and how festive the building looked. Though they had prepared her for a warm and loving reunion with her ex (which this was not), she wasn't going to take out her frustration on his parents when all they had done was try to make sure she didn't have a lonely Christmas.
"Thank you, Mrs. Chandler," she said, not giving any attention to Liam or the small argument with his father. "And thank you once again for inviting me out here. It's great to see you all again."
Riley grabbed her bags once again and followed Liam to the stairs. "Well, someone's happy to see me," she stated once they were out of earshot of his parents. "Look, Liam, I'm sorry for intruding on your Christmas." She debated on whether or not to say more when he was clearly so unhappy to see her, but decided to continue anyway.
"Look, I was finally preparing for my first Christmas alone and your parents saw me in the store. I didn't think it'd be a good idea to come, but they convinced me it'd be fine. They said you'd be happy to see me," she explained. Riley had matured. She was now calmly explaining stuff to Liam, not quite as hot headed as she'd been when they were dating.
"Look, I don't expect you to welcome me with open arms and a kiss on the cheek, but the least we could do is just try to get along for your parents. They're good people," she said. She was open to talking. Once she'd realized a few months after breaking up with Liam that it had been a misunderstanding and he hadn't actually cheated on her, she'd been too proud to ask for him to come back or explain her mistake. It had been too long now and he still probably thought she was accusing him of something he hadn't actually done.
She was ready to talk as she could only hope he'd be open to it as well.

we'll see! it depends on whether or not i can see compatibility xD lmao riley makes friends with his whole family while he grumps the whole time. emilia is...quite devious and a little devil tho ahaha}
Liam would’ve been content to remain silent as he led the way up the stairs, but of course Riley had to immediately start talking to him the moment they’d gotten out of sight and earshot of his parents. Her words made his metaphorical feathers ruffle and he couldn’t stop himself from looking back and shooting her a brown-eyed glare. Oh, please, as if she were really sorry. Not sorry enough to fight it, not sorry enough to beg her parents to buy her a plane ticket home or something. If they couldn’t come to her, as she so kindly pointed out against him when they were outside, the least she could do was go there. Or even stay home. It’s not like spending Christmas alone was really such a horrible thing, despite what all the cheesy movies told you.
It was her next comment that broke his stubborn silence. “They said you'd be happy to see me.” Excuse him but, what? Why would they say that to her? Let alone think that? Liam hadn’t seen Riley since the day they’d broken up a few years ago. He hadn’t mentioned her, or thought of her, or…anything! He’d never told his parents the reason behind the break-up – oh! That must’ve been it…or part of it, anyway. They didn’t know there was any bad blood between him and Riley when he’d kept himself as reserved as possible about it. Damn, to think he’d dug his own grave with this…
“Well, they were wrong,” he said, matter-of-factly, leaning against the wall and crossing his arms. They’d stopped at the landing, and as his mother said, her room was down the end of this hall and on the left. He could faintly make out the sounds of pots and pans, and conversation that he couldn’t pick out any words from. They most certainly couldn’t hear them, but he lowered his voice anyway.
“The only reason they invited you is because they don’t know..” He didn’t elaborate on that but he assumed she’d understand. “If they did, I doubt they’d be very happy to see you either.” It had been so long ago, sure, but Liam couldn’t forgive her for accusing him of something he hadn’t done, especially when that false-something had driven her away from him.
His eyes hardened, sharp as flint. “I don’t have to try for them, thanks. And you’re the last person to be asking me to do anything anyway. …Now, go dump your stuff already. I was in the middle of a show before you barged in.” And before he took a nap.

(Then she starts leaving candy canes on his pillow when he's not in his room XD
oh yeah I would never force you/Liam into a relationship I want to meet her)
Liam stayed silent at first and that's what irritated Riley. Yes, he didn't want her to be there and she understood that, but the least he could do was talk. Be civil. If anything, it would make his parents happy and they were good people. She didn't see why he couldn't be polite to her just to please his parents. Yes, at this point she was definitely more pleased to see his family than Liam himself. She had been excited, hoping they could patch things up, but that was crushed the moment she saw his reaction to her arrival. It wasn't a good reaction.
"Look, Liam, we were young and stupid, okay?" she asked. They were. They'd only been teenagers when they began dating and teenagers didn't know anything about relationships. That's why she'd been wrapped up in the misunderstanding that caused her to end it. "I learned that you hadn't actually done it. I know it's all on me, but I was too proud and embarrassed of my mistake to admit it." That was the hard part for her to admit. She knew she was in the wrong but hadn't had the guts to call Liam and apologize. She shook her head. "I'm a good person, Liam, and I know you probably don't agree with that right now, but I'm asking you to give me a chance. I'm not asking you to take me back, I'm asking you to be civil. Enjoy this holiday with me and your parents and then if you still think I'm a bad person, then we don't have to talk again. I'll never accept another invitation from your parents," she said. She spoke rapidly, wanting to get it all out before Liam had a chance to put his own words in.
"Look, I was hurt when I found out what you did, or what I thought you did, but when Katie told me, she had pictures of you with another girl," Riley explained. The problem was that she trusted a girl she didn't truly know well when the pictures had actually just been taken at a bad time. She should've trusted that Liam wouldn't cheat on her, but she'd been so insecure and worried that she thought all her nightmares were coming true. "And I realize now that I was stupid. So can't we just sit down and talk about it?" she asked. She didn't know what to expect. He could very easily refuse that, but maybe he still had a heart buried somewhere. Or some feelings for Riley. Even if they weren't romantic, it was hard to just wipe away all the times he'd held her in his arms and she'd promised they'd be together forever... the thoughts made Riley want to laugh. They had been young and stupid, hadn't they?
Riley went to place her bags in the room. She wouldn't unpack now. If Liam refused to talk to her, she'd go help his parents with dinner and let him get back to his TV. Maybe he just needed his space anyway. Riley shows up last minute to a family vacation was quite a shock.
