He waits in the darkness. Crouched in hiding, the steady ticking noise rings about the cavern, echoing off the walls. He is silent. No part of him stirs as he waits there, anticipating a single moment. The movement of mechanisms around him create soft noise. He still does not stir. He sits, watching, studying the door in front of him. The only light comes from the edges of the door; even then, it is sparse. He holds his breath in anticipation as he counts down the ticks. Tick. One minute, forty-three seconds left. Tick. One minute, forty-two seconds left. His excitement begins to grow. He raises his head, slowly, as if not wanting to disturb some unseen force. Time seems to pass gradually as he waits. Finally, the moment comes down to its last stages. Tick. Ten seconds left. Tick. Nine seconds left. He stands up to his full height, spreading his wings and stretching forward. It was nearly time. Anticipation for the moment buzzed through his head, causing a flurry of emotions. Tick. Two seconds left. Tick. One second left… The moment was now. The door bursts open, exposing him to bright light of the outdoors. He leaps forward, launching himself outward as far as he can go. Immediately, he begins to sing his song, counting the number of times he could. Cookoo! Once. Cookoo! Twice. Cookoo! Three times. He continues on for five more calls before he felt the familiar tug in his feet. He was done. The simple mechanism pulls him back inside. He strains to capture a mental image of Freedom once again before he was finally pulled back in, the door shut in his face. The moment was over. He relaxes his stance, heaving out a sigh. The ticks of the clock rang in his head, reminding him of his duty. He was the slave, and his cell was the master. He would obey. Tick. Fifty nine minutes, fifty-four seconds left. Tick. Fifty nine minutes, fifty-three seconds left. He longs for the beauty of Freedom.
