I felt it behind me; the creature's breath was on my heels, I could smell the rotten flesh between it's teeth, hear it's panting. My heart pounded and blood roared in my ears as I pelted across the open moor.
"Bramblefeather!" I screeched as I neared the gray tabby tom who was hunting on the moor.
"Spiritleaf! I was-"
"Run!" I yowled, cutting him off. Together we raced away, headed towards camp. At the last second, I veered away. Shocked, Bramblefeather took a few more steps before turning to follow me.
"That thing's gonna kill us now!" he cried, anger in his wide eyes. Anger that was directed at me.
"If we had have led it to camp, kits, elders, queens, apprentices and warriors could have been killed!" I snapped back, my heart still pounding against my chest. That's when the adrenaline hit, and I realised it was time to choose; fight or flight. I glanced over at Bramblefeather, who stared back with wide eyes. Everything seemed to slow down. Determination must've shown in my gaze, because Bramblefeather's eyes narrowed and he dipped his head once. We ran a few more fox-lengths, then whirled around, claws unsheathed, teeth bared, to face the monster behind us. It snarled, the rotteness of it's breath polluting my senses, flesh wedged between it's cracked yellow teeth. I growled back in response, but I was feeling less brave now. Adrenaline still pumped through me, though, and my jaw was set. We had to defeat this monster. For the sake of our Clan. And so, the two of us charged as one, both unsure if we would survive, but certain that this was what we had to do.
