-- prologue! || Onyxsun ||
I watched the glowing pool of water, my dark face reflected back at me, my amber eyes shining with the stars. It had been several moons since my passing, I was the last to go, after both my siblings. One of them appeared now, a light gray tabby with green eyes. My sister.
"Hello, Jadestone," I said in greeting.
She dipped her head at me. "Hello brother. Where is Ambermighty?"
"I don't know," I replied, then looked up at the towering cliff above. "Ahh, there she is."
And sure enough, she was, with her bright ginger pelt and burning amber eyes that would always hold a glimmer of mischief.
"Onyxsun!" She said loudly. "Have you seen it?"
I didn't have to look down at my reflection to know my eyes had darkened. "Yes, yes I did." It was a grim response.
Jadestone tilted her head. "Is there something going on?"
Ambermighty snorted. "No sister, we're just concerned for nothing." She rolled her eyes; once she reached the pool of water and was standing next to me she put one paw in the water.
An image appeared. It was a red tinted brown tabby she-cat in a Rainclan den, specifically the nursery den. Curled up against her stomach were two kits. A dark tabby tom, and a light brown manx she-cat.
Jadestone looked down at the kits. "They're young, harmless."
I shook my head at her. "Just wait."
Ambermighty touched the pool again, and another image appeared. This time it was of a small finch's wings, it's body was nowhere to be found, the wings looked ripped up, as if a kitten had torn into it.
Jadestone nodded her head. "Ahh, I see now."
Ambermighty and I spoke as one, our voices sounding like one but also many at the same time. "The wings try to fly, but little claws have ripped their power to no longer be."
Jadestone let out a sigh. "I shall warn Berrydew."
She walked away, I watched her go, before turning back to Ambermighty.
Her usual glitter in her eyes was gone, instead they looked lifeless. "What will happen to Rainclan? What will happen to the clan we love, Onyxsun? Will this be their downfall?"
I sat in silence, for even I didn't know.-- chapter i! || Hawkpaw ||
Light filtered in through the leaves into the den, making my heavy, tired eyes flick open. A small leaf floated down from the den roof, landing on my nose, which made me sneeze.
“Ah! Hawkpaw! Couldn’t you have found a better way to wake me up?” Snapped Littlepaw.
“Shut your muzzle,” I groaned, trying to ignore my sister. I rolled over, facing the opposite way, but she padded around to stand in front of me.
“Are you really that grumpy?” She meowed loudly. I noted that Hailpaw lifted his head to glance in our direction before sleepily letting it flop back down.
“Go away, Littlepaw,” I growled. “It’s the assessment today, and I don’t need you to ruin it for me.”
“Fine, grumpy guts,” Littlepaw replied quickly, padding from the den. I sat up, stretching my stiff muscles. I look out of the den to see Littlepaw talking with her mentor, Lightbuck. It’s hard to believe we’ve been training for one moon now. I stand up slowly. Littlepaw has just been sent off to start her assessment.
“Do you have to do the assessment, Hailpaw?”
“Mwuf. No.” Came the muffled, bored reply. I began to leave the den, my mind a whirl of thoughts.
What if I fail? Then who will lead the Clan after father? Littlepaw? But there has never been a she-cat leading the Clan before… so much responsibility… so much pressure…
“Hawkpaw! You ready?” Jadefur’s bright, bubbly voice split through my thoughts. Taking a breath, I nodded.
“Yeah. What’s the first clue?” I asked.
“White fur sticks here, trapped and torn,” She meowed slowly.
The rabbit warren. Easy.
“Ok, thanks Jadefur,” I meowed, padding away.
“Oh, and Hawkpaw?”
“Yes?” I turned.
“If you’re in the right place, a warrior will tell you the task you must complete to get the next clue, ok?” Jadefur seemed somewhat concerned, but I shrugged it off.
“Yep. Got it.” I padded out of camp and through the forest. I turned down the small, dusty trailed that lead to the rabbit warren. The prickle bushes nearby had fur caught to them; white fur.
“Ok, I’m here,” I proclaimed loudly. I was greeted by Solarblaze.
“Hello, Hawkpaw. To get the next clue, you must defeat me in a mock battle.”
“Alright. I’m ready.” I crouched low. Solarblaze made a feint at me; I tried not to flinch. I dodged his actual blow and I raked his flank with sheathed claws. He whipped around to try and pounce on me, but I slipped out from under his paws. I slipped under him and pummelled his stomach with my paws. Solarblaze winced and rolled away, but I quickly pounced on him and pinned him down. He struggled, but he couldn’t move. I grinned, slowly stepping off him.
“Ok, you’ve earned the clue,” Solarblaze meowed. “Where the grass is long and water abounds, you will find your next challenge, and your next clue.”

I stretched as my mentor came padding up to me, he seemed stiff, more than usual.
“Are you ready?” He meowed.
“Yes!” I said, I had been ready for over half a moon.
“Good,” He said, then leaned in closer and whispered into my ear, “Remember your training, don’t worry with thoughts, just take action and you’ll become powerful enough that you outshine your brother.”
I shook my head at him, “Tssk, tssk, always the worry wart.” I said it with a smile in my eyes.
“I’ll be fine,” I continued. “You and I both know that I’m an excellent hunter and a power to reckon with in combat.”
He let out a purr, “That’s true.”
I purred back in response, “See? Nothing to worry about.”
“You’re right,” He replied. “Now, your first clue: where the water runs and the brambles come undone, you will find the one who’s ready for the hunt.”
I nodded my head and walked out of camp, as soon as I was out I took off like a hare, only to slow down as I neared the forest edge. Once there I hid among the trees shadows, observing the area by the stream that ran on the eastern side of our territory. A flicker of motion caught my eye from the side, a white tail tip.
I watched Mightymouse as he trotted out of the forest and down to the stream’s edge, he looked into the forest, “I can smell you, so unless you want to waste the day away and not finish your assessment I recommend coming out here.”
I walked out, towards him and sat down on a smooth, slippery rock on the stream bank. “Don’t tell me I’m fishing?”
“You are,” He purred.
I wrinkled my nose, while I was an excellent fisher, I hated to get my paws wet. “Alright,” I said and then reached a paw into the water.-- chapter iii! || Hawkpaw ||
My fur was soaked; mud clogged my stomach fur and water dripped from my pelt. I huffed angrily at Swiftwind.
“The challenge had to be swimming across the lake, didn’t it?”
“Yep.” Swiftwind purred in quiet amusement, his tail flicking slowly. Turns out, the “long grass and water” clue led me to the lake, after what felt like moons of searching, may I add, where Swiftwind made me swim. I was not excited for the next clue. Swiftwind was sitting down, looking over at me.
“Alright, I guess you’ve earned you next clue.” Swiftwind stretched and my ears flattened. You guess? I did exactly what you asked!
“Where the smallest creatures reside, near a long-forgotten trail, your next challenge awaits.”
Swiftwind completely ignored me as I stalked away, my claws unsheathed in anger. I stomped away, letting my anger lead me blindly. I ended up by the side of the abandoned Thunderpath. I snapped out of my rage to realise where I was. I looked down the Thunderpath to see a cat sitting alone, over ten fox-lengths away. I smiled.
I guess I’m in the right place.
I padded down in that direction, getting closer I saw that it was a brown tabby tom with white forepaws… oh. It was Alderflight. He turned his amber eyes on me and a small smile flickered across his face, but it was fleeting.
“Welcome, Hawkpaw,” he meowed, dipping his head in greeting. I nodded back.
“The task?” I asked briskly.
“Ah, yes.” Alderflight stood up slowly and turned to face the Thunderpath. Curious, I padded to his side, looking up towards the dusty path, wondering if a monster would rumble down it once again.
“Now, you must cross the Thunderpath.”
“Out of RainClan territory?” A thrill ran through me.
“Out of RainClan territory,” confirmed Alderflight. “Now, once you are over there, you must collect three different herbs; catmint, horsetail and dock.”
“Alright.” I took a single step onto the Thunderpath, summoned my courage and trotted across. I emerged in a thick wooden grove and glanced around.
Now, which of these plants are Horsetail, Dock and Catmint?
