It's not exactly "positive", but I was curious on your thoughts about the forum issues, specifically otd. Especially considering seeing you post this thread.

yes, well. There are certainly some glaring issues that need to get fixed. But at the end of the day we're all human. We make mistakes, we say hurtful things, and in this digital age problems can spread like wildfire. Do I think that shutting OTD down for a day or two was the right thing to do? Not necessarily. I had a chat with Tomo a while back because I was reporting some concerns that I had regarding OTD. And he brought up the idea of temporarily shutting down OTD. I advised against it, but I didn't dismiss the idea (at least not without prior notification to the general population of the site).
The biggest problem I see is when someone has the "wrong" opinions based on the culture of the internet, people gang up on them and bully them into silence, and then proceed to create a bunch of spam topics bashing that person. Since this site was founded in the United States (as far as I know), I assume that the right to free speech applies here. It really ticks me off when people are raging and declaring that someone's opinons do not matter. And then when people post a "chat room" for a specific group, they forget that this is a public forum so of course other people outside their little niche are going to post in their thread. With that being said, people should not just dive into a thread to intentionally stir up trouble. Even if it is a joke, it can still be hurtful. But even then, without the nonverbal cues from a face-to-face interaction, people interpret things the wrong way and a flame war ensues when both sides get defensive.
Something that's more of a pet peeve than anything else is when people use OTD to complain. Like seriously, there's a "Feedback and Suggestions" board for a reason. That is where you post your input on how the forums can be better, and any other feedback. Tomo has made it very clear to me that he appreciates feedback, good and bad. Just don't be rude or mean about it.
Overall I'd like to see more of a middle road for topics regarding religion and LGBT. Like we get to a point where people aren't trying to beat each other into the dirt, but rather can coexist in a safe environment for all. I keep these things personal, but for others its their means of identity and way to belong. So banning these topics will only drive people further away and feel MORE alienated.
In regards to politics, I support restriction on that. As there is an equal amount of hate stemming from the left and right. And with the election going on, its pretty explosive right now.
but that's just my two cents

Damn, my reply won't be as thorough as yours, but I'll try.
I agree that shutting down the board was an impulsive decision, and unfair against the other 90% of posters who weren't contributing to the problem at the time. But now looking at the results of it, it's the evening time for the U.S. and there isn't any drama. That just never happens. As though the shut-down flushed out certain posts from being made. In summary, I didn't agree with the act, but results are apparent for now.
It became apparent that a lot of the stuff was miscommunication, or people making assumptions, or as you said, people not liking other people's opinions and needing to say something overly harsh about it.
In any user-run system, especially with the community we have here, feedback is essential. I think the feedback system is screwed up. It's not just feedback that's needed, it's active feedback, it's a two-way street. It's disconcerting when you send in feedback, and get like 2 or 3 replies along the lines of, "We'll consider it." And then nothing is ever heard of again. Feedback was given, but it feels like it just got lost in the void. A critical component of developing leadership, in my opinion, is active feedback. So I think that's two problems with the feedback system, not much is provided, and not much is given back to the person providing the feedback.
But yea, I was just curious. What are you up to?

Exactly, we need more immediate feedback but we should also get a follow-up when things are being considered, implemented, or put aside.

Are you taking the class for fun, or are you planning on going into the doctorly field? Cause that'd be sweet.

I'm really only taking it to satisfy a requirement for my major. It's pretty interesting. Lost of reading though X.x I've kicked around the idea of going into medicine, but I haven't really done anything towards it.

Is our major not doctorly then? I'd assume it is if you're required to take history of medicine.
College life has become a big "wth" for me. The classes are going fine, but apartment life, and taking buses, and doing stuff is a ton different from last year living in the dorms.

(Also sorry about long winded posts. Please don't comment on those ^^' is like to move forward from that mess that was the shutdown of the OTD. The sole purpose of this thread was to start positive conversations. Not to discuss opinions.)
