Jolene Pinewood • 19 • Female • Demeter • Faceclaim Jolene is a true southern belle. She doesn't swear, she's religious, she's hospitable, she's the poster child of the Deep South. She is often fearful of the new adventures she is facing up north, but it is clear to her guild members she is afraid. She sets and relaxes her jaw when she is anxious or afraid. Jolene was told to have an open mind, but has some prejudice leftover from her judgmental hometown. Growing up with a strict set of morals, Jolene follows them to a T. This can lead her astray very easily, though. Jolene grew up in a small southern town, where everybody knew everybody. She hasn't meet a new person since she was born. Her family owned a farm, where she mainly helped with the livestock. Her father was the town's preacher, and they attended church services every Sunday, though often attended a service more than once. If they could afford to lay off some farm work. Jolene has 4 sisters, all of which she is the oldest. She shares a room with the older two. Mother: Sue Ann Pinewood (46) Father: Peter Pinewood (50) Sister: Brier Pinewood (12) Sister: Mary Ann Pinewood (10) Sister: Leslie Pinewood (7) Sister: "Stevie" Pinewood (5) Jolene wears her charm as though it was woven into a friendship bracelet, the colors being green, pink, and yellow in a crisscross pattern.

(Here's Mia's starter. I'm putting a few last minute edits into Emmett's before posting that)
"Vince!" Mia called, her voice echoing through the grocery store. A few people turned to look, making a face when they saw how young she was. This wasn't her local grocery store so it might make sense for everyone else to assume that Vince was her five year old son rather than her 19 year old brother. The large boy came around the corner, his arms full of candy, juice, and crackers.
"No. You and Nick were on a sugar high for a week last time we bought you that much candy," Mia said. She shook her head.
"Find. I'll buy it. I'm 19 and have a job," Vincent argued. He dropped his armful of food into the cart, not even waiting for a response. Apparently he wasn't trusted enough to go grocery shopping by himself and he needed Mia and Riley there to help him. It was all a load of earwax if you asked Vince.
"Alright, I got the rice. Now we have everything. Let's check out so I can go home and finally take a nap," Riley said. He eyed the items Vince brought, but didn't say anything. Riley led the way towards the checkouts. He was a large man, tall and muscular, who had no problem clearing a path for them. He moved up to talk to the cashier while Mia emptied their groceries onto the belt. She put a divider up and allowed Vince to put his stuff up.
"Paper or plastic?" the young bagger asked, looking past the still busy Riley and towards her.
"Oh, uh, paper," Mia replied. She pushed Riley over so she could move the cart towards the teenage boy that looked as if he'd rather be anywhere else than bagging groceries for the Walsh family.
Riley used their mother's credit card to pay and the two of them left the store while Vince was still counting out cash to pay for his junk. "I'll never understand that kid," Mia said, pushing their cart into the cart returns after they loaded up Riley's truck.
Her brother laughed. "You were the same way when we were kids, Mia," he pointed out. Riley always seemed to have a better memory about their childhood than she did.
"Yeah, when we were kids. Vincent is 19," she countered. They stopped talking when Vincent approached with two plastic bags swinging from his hands. He got into the backseat of the truck and Mia got into the front. A few seconds later, Riley popped into the driver's seat.
"Hey, at least Nick has to do all the work of unloading groceries when we get home," Vince pointed out.
"And who's fault is that?" Riley asked.
"His. He doesn't have to go along with my ideas," Vince replied. Vincent was easily the biggest troublemaker in the family. Now, all of them were high energy, gun loving kids, but Vince was the worst. Nick was the shy one who, unfortunately, usually ended up going along with whatever scheme his older brother had cooked up. Mia wasn't quite sure how her parents survived raising all of them.
When Riley parked the truck, Mia was the first one out. She didn't even go into the house. Besides the three of them, Nick was the only one home and she didn't feel the need to have a nice chat with her brother at the moment. Instead, Mia went towards the woods behind their house. They were isolated from the others, and while a couple of her siblings groaned at the lack of stuff to do, Mia enjoyed the freedom it gave her. She could just disappear into the woods for a couple hours. She'd been doing that all her life. Her parents had enough kids - they wouldn't miss one.
Following a well worn trail, Mia pulled herself into the little 'house' her father had helped her make when she was a child. It was a little wooden hut, barely big enough to stand up in now that she was full grown. A stump in the center served as the siting area and, occasionally, as a table when she had visitors. Riley was the only one that came and visited her.
Mia sat down on her tree stump, leaning forward with her chin in her hand and her elbows on her knee. How she had ever found this comfortable was a mystery, but it was the one place she could go that would allow her to escape the chaos that was her household. Her phone, as always, was on the little piece of wood that served as a shelf. She opened up the hut's makeshift 'door' to allow a breeze into the hut. Summer afternoons could get hot.
Only seconds after she opened the door, a beautiful doe stepped inside. It was taller than most deer she had ever seen and seemed to have a light silver aura to it.
"Umm...?" Mia questioned out loud. She held her hand out to the animal. It sniffed her hand before opening its mouth. The doe in her hut was surprising. The silver aura was extra surprising. When it opened its mouth and began to speak, Mia almost fainted. She knew a lot about animals and she was pretty sure that most of them didn't speak English.
"The gods' power is weakening. Kronos is rising. Head south to the other Heroes. Your charm will lead the way," the voice was strong, but as soon as it finished speaking, the aura disappeared and the animal took off in the other direction, almost trashing the hut in its panic.
"My charm?" Mia grabbed the charm from her pocket. It was on a keychain that contained only her house keys. Something that never left her side. She had been uncertain about that visit from Artemis many years ago. After all, how could she prove that it was nothing more than a dream to explain the odd owl shaped charm she found in her pocket one day.
But there was no other explanation now.
Mia burst from her hut, plowing through the woods and jumping over fallen trees as if she had the only area memorized like the back of her hand. She did. This is where she grew up. She pulled open the back door to the house, barging in on Vince and Nick's Mario Kart tournament.
"Where Riley?" she asked, panting slightly from her run. She was in shape, but Mia didn't think she'd ever ran that fast.
"His room," Vince answered, setting down his controller and raising an eyebrow. "Why-?" Mia was out of the room before he could finish his question.
"Ri! Ri! Ri! Ri!" Mia made her way to the room that Riley had shared with Max at one point. The two oldest boys still shared the room when Max was home, but that didn't happen much when you were married, had a child, and shared a house half an hour away with your wife. So; it acted as just Riley's room for the moment.
"What's up?" Riley asked, opening the door and almost getting smacked in the face by Mia's hands as she knocked on the door. He had a book in his hands, showing that she had just interrupted his reading time.
"I need a ride to Andi's hous," Mia said.
Riley scrunched his eyebrows together. "You know where my keys are."
"I can't drive there. I might not come home," she said.
Riley dropped his book. "What do you mean you might not come home?"
"It's a long story. I'll tell you on the way."
With that, the twins were off. They loaded up into Riley's truck and he pulled out of the driveway and turned left towards Andi's house.
"So, gonna tell me what this is all about now?" Riley asked as they drove. He stopped at a stop sign and looked both ways before continuing on.
"Okay, I know this is going to sound weird. Remember our 11th birthday? How I told you I found that charm?" Mi asked. She pulled out the key chain with the moon charm on it.
"Yeah..."
"Well, I know I'm going to sound weird, but it was from a goddess. Artemis. Remember her from Mr. Tompkin's English class?" She asked. Riley nodded. "Well, I was out in the woods and a doe came up to me and began talking. It was her. She said my charm would guide me to the others," Mia finished. She sat and watched Riley, waiting for a reaction.
Surprisingly, he nodded and tightened his grip on the wheel. "Your my sister, my best friend. I believe you, Mia," he said. She could feel the relief flowing through her mind. "I'm just going to tell Mom and Dad you went to visit Kenzie," he said.
"Good idea." Her parents would never believe her story, but Mia's best friend, Kenzie, had moved across the country. Mia occasionally went to visit Kenzie so it wouldn't surprise her parents if she went on a trip to visit her.
Riley stopped in Andi's driveway. "Good luck," he said. He hesitated. "I noticed you didn't pack anything, so here's my credit card and some cash. I wanna make sure you have enough." He handed over the contents of his wallet before driving back towards their house.
Mia went up and knocked on the door. A few minutes later, a young girl answered. "Hi, Grace. Is Andi home?" she asked. The child nodded and ran off, her feet slapping against the wooden floor. Her friend rounded the corner, bleary eyed and yawning.
"What's up?"
"Remember how you said I could use your extra car whenever I wanted?" Mia asked.
Andi nodded.
"Well, I need it. I have to drive across the country. I'll even buy it off of you. If you stop at my place, Riley can grab $500 from my room," she said. Andi had offered to sell her he car a few weeks ago for that price. Mia had declined. She shared Riley's truck with him and Vince and that had worked or fine. Why did she need her own car? Now she was regretting it.
"Uh, sure. I don't even want to know why you need it," Andi said. She disappeared and returned with a set of keys. "Good luck," she said, tossing the keys to her.
Mia thanked her friend and went over to the Jeep in the corner of the driveway. It was old and clearly well used, but it was the only vehicle that Mia would be able to use. She got into the driver's seat and turned it on, glad to see a full tank of gas. She waved to Andi and Grace, who had joined her aunt at the door, and backed out of the driveway.
Mia pulled out onto the freeway, taking the charm off of her keychain. She was surprised to learn after a few mistakes that touching it would create almost a map in her mind, telling her where to go. With the charm resting on her leg, Mia drove through the night.
She stopped at a hotel at one point, taking the cheapest room they had for a few hours. After that, she stopped at a Walmart for some clean clothes and continued on her way. She gassed up her car once or twice and was only halfway through her latest tank when she pulled into the Parthenon parking lot. She saw a boy leaning against his car and steeled herself to leave the vehicle and talk to him.

(I know his is a lot shorter, I just didn't have much inspiration for Emmett at the moment. I'm hoping my next one will be more the length of Mia's starter)
Emmett had simply been on his bed reading a book when the call came. It began with his owl shaped pendant warming up. He had jumped up in surprise and pulled it off the chain that held it around his neck. The owl watched him with its cold, lifeless eyes. Looking towards his door and hoping nobody had heard his rather unmanly yelp, Emmett picked the charm up. Now it was glowing as well as heating up.
"Ummm? Athena?" he asked. The goddess had come to him in a dream when he was only nine years old. The charm had been on his pillow when he woke up and he kept it with him ever since then. "Did you want to ask me anything?" he asked again, unsure if the goddess was trying to contact me. He had been waiting for this moment since the day h had received his charm.
"What's going on in here?" Emery asked, pushing open the door.
Emmett jumped and stood in front of his glowing charm. "Nothing. Why don't you just go throw the football around with Dad?"
"Because Dad's sleeping. You do realize you're not the only smart one in this house, right? I know stuff too, squirt," Emery said. He tousled Emmett's hair before stepping out into the hallway.
Emmett sat down on his bed and grabbed the charm. The heat wasn't that intense anymore. As soon as he touched it, his vision went black. When he woke up, he was no longer in his room. He was in a large building. When he spotted the Athena Parthenos, he knew exactly where he was. He approached the statue and it turned its large head towards her. "Head south to the Parthenon," a woman's voice said, emerging from the statue lifeless mouth.
With that, Emmett blacked out again and awoke in his bed. Well, that was decided. Emmett was packing his bags and making his way to Tennessee. If he knew anything from the Greek myths he'd been reading up on, it's that you never wanted to anger the gods.
That's how he ended up in Emery's car with a few bags of clothes and other necessities. His brother had offered up his car right away when Emmett proposed this trip. 'Its more reliable than your piece of junk. I'll use yours if I need to go anywhere,' he had said. Emmett knew it was true and silently thanked his brother once again as he pulled into the parking lot of the Parthenon. It had been a two day drive and he 19 year old, armed with only a debit card and his iPhone, was itching to get out of the driver's seat and actually go do something. He had gotten out of the car a few times to put gas into his tank or stop somewhere to eat. It wasn't enough. He needed to get out and actually move. That's why he was so excited to see a sign for the Parthenon ahead.
It was dark out and the Parthenon was closed to visitors, but Emmett's charm began to warm up again. After going back to its normal self for a few days, it had caught his attention when he began to near the building. He assumed that was good. It meant he was in the correct place, right?
It probably wasn't the smartest idea to bring his car right up and park in front of the building, but Emmett had a lot of book smarts and intelligence. His common sense could be shaky at times. He got out of the driver's seat and leaned against the car, burrowing deeper into his sweatshirt to keep himself warm. He'd give it an hour at most. If nobody showed up, he'd spend the night in Emery's car again and head back the next day with his head held in shame. His father told him not to go on the trip. It'd be useless. Emmett just used the excuse that this would help him with his Greek mythology class next year. He wasn't taking a Greek mythology class, but his parents didn't need to know that.
It was surprisingly cold out tonight. Wasn't is supposed to be warm in the south? Emmett went into his car and grabbed a hoodie. He pulled it over his head before returning to his spot and watching a pair of headlights pull up.

Day I hope yours goes well. Are you living in dorms? That's like my biggest problem with my school. It's a small commuter college and some people just get their associates degree but most transfer to a four year university. All three of us have different colleges in mind. Plus I need to talk to my advisor cause I might have enough credits to start as a sophomore and then I'll only have one year there. And thank you : ) Ziotsu don't worry about being super quick with it. We're still waiting on a couple forms

Day yeah I live in the states. We got like our state schools that are all like normal colleges with dorms and stuff but then there's a couple in the system that don't have dorms or anything. They're a lot smaller and only two years. These schools though have guaranteed transfers to the bigger state schools so most people do it that way. Tuition at my current place is about $2500 a semester. The school I'm going to transfer to is about $15000 a year so I'm saving like $10000 a year for my firsts two years of that makes sense. A lot of people just go directly to a four year school though. All my friends did

Angie finally got into that study mode after many hours of struggling with being distracted. He felt a rare smile creep onto his face. History was never a fun subject to study, as most of the people from then were dead now, so he was happy to finally be in the zone. He let himself forget about the rest of the world, letting out a small hum every once in awhile when he finally got to a new topic. For a while he missed the voice calling to him, he heard a small mumble behind him but he chalked it up to Eri trying to get his attention for some stupid reason. It only took a moment for him to go ‘maybe I should see what she wants’ and turn around to see no one there. Slightly confused he turned back to his book, set on getting back to studying. Well, it had been a while since he started, a quick break probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. He could get a small power nap and go longer in the night, anyways so it would probably help him. He could just let himself rest here, that would work. Only seconds after he shut his eyes did he hear “East-South-East of here is a place named ‘The Parthenon’ go there as we need your assistance defeating Kronos. Go with haste.” NOW Hera decided to speak, it’s only been ten years. If he didn’t have the charm to remind him he contacted a goddess years ago, he probably would have forgotten by now. Even so, his main thought wasn’t that he was finally being called by Hera, but the fact that he was in the middle of a semester. Angie put his head in his hands, glancing up to see the open book in front of him, displaying information about the civil war. “Eri, can you go find my car keys for me?” He called out to his house, pushing the chair out from his desk. It wasn’t like he could escape from this duty. Honestly he was sure Hera would come to haunt him if he didn’t show up. “Do it yourself” She yelled back, her voice softening at the ‘t’ “I need to pack” Angie was already traveling around his room, suitcase, clothes, study materials, laptop…. He was forgetting something. “What are you doing?” Eri was a lot closer now, jingling the keys at his doorway watching him gather things from all over. “Packing, I need to go help a friend out.” “Who? Where?” “Do you know where the Parthenon is?” “Greece?” “No, I need to go south” Couldn’t Hera have given any more information? He quickly swung open his laptop, typing out ‘Parthenon’ in the search bar. No, only Greece. What if he put ‘The’ in the front? “I’m going to Tennessee” He stated, shutting the laptop and packing it up along with everything else. “Why do you have to go?” Eri handed over the keys to Angie, watching him run to the door. “Someone I met a long time ago needs help right now, even though I am going to tell her exactly how much I wished she gave me some warning, I need to go help. I’ll call you as much as I can, okay?” With that he was out the door and headed down the road. His phone was set to GPS to tell him where he needed to go. He had to take I-80 for a ways, so at least it was simple. It took him a day to get there. He was utterly exhausted at that point, having only pulled over for quick two hour minute naps every once in awhile. He took that time to contact any professors that he wouldn't be coming to class and manged to get a few things worked out where he would be able to upload assignments online. Though once he arrived, he saw a couple cars there, despite it being so late, so he parked along the road near the Parthenon guessing those were other people who the gods called. He was hesitant to get out of his car, locking it while watching the people he already saw. For all he knew, they were out here to do things he would rather not engage in.

Day yeah like I thought about going to a private college nearby my house but it's too expensive. I actually didn't get financial aid for these years just cause like I can actually afford it so I didn't even think about that so I'm hoping for financial aid/scholarships when I go away cause it's like a 4 hour drive to the school I want so i gotta live in dorms. This is just the cheapest option available to me

In the south with the humid air dripping like the Spanish moss, near the edge of her state, Jolene awoke to what she assumed would be any other day. With a tragic twist of dramatic irony, by night's fall, the country girl would not be resting her head in the comfort of her own bed, which she shared with her sister, but beside a group of strangers in the heart of Tennessee, her home state.
Throwing the thin comforter aside, Jolene yawned as she shuffled to get dressed. The morning was crisp and pleasant, but she knew the weather wasn't going to be nice around noon. The sun was burning her to a crisp on a daily basis. If only she tanned! A new sunburn arrived every seven minutes, and she was running out of Aloe Vera. With her trusty pair of overalls, working boots, and a baseball cap to keep the sun away from her ivory cheeks, the oldest child of the Pinewood family got to work. After hours of tilling, feeding, weeding, sweeping, and cleaning up cattle droppings, lunch was announced by her mother's shrill cry. Thank the good Lord.
Walking into the small kitchen gracefully, despite the heat exhaustion she probably had, Jolene took a seat beside her youngest sister as Mrs. Pinewood placed fried bologna sandwiches in front of each of the girls. The smell was awful, but the taste was indescribably amazing. There was always a draw back to things as great as this.
Her father had taken a break from writing sermons to eat with the family, a rare occurrence. It was impossible to ignore the smell of perfectly crispy bologna, everyone had to admit. With a soft cacophony of story telling, shrieks, and the occasional command to "Shut your mouth!", Jolene remained silent as she ate, admiring her family in this moment. It was as though her memory was focusing the camera, ready to take a picture on par with Freedom from Want. Unfortunately, the moment didn't last. Without warning, the little charm on Jolene's friendship bracelet grew white hot, and she cried out as she couldn't get the tight bracelet off. There were blinding streams of light, and Jolene barely heard her sisters screaming and her parents cursing. Suddenly, the side door connected to the kitchen swung open, letting the smell of wet earth collide with the stench of their lunch. One of the farmhands walked in, his face still, calm, almost peaceful.
"The time is now, my love." A woman's voice spoke. It was soft and warm, and calmed the children immediately. The parents were still sputtering for words that wouldn't make a Nun blush. "Report to the Parthenon here in your home. The way will be clear to you."
And with that, the lights faded, the burning stopped as though it had never began, and their farmhand had his same old gruff expression, scratching his furry jaw. "What's for lunch?" His rough voice asked the family. Everyone was silent, their mouths agape...
It was night. The work for today was done, and Jolene stood alone in her bedroom, staring at her old antique suitcase, which now contained everything she owned. Oh Lord, it was so little...
"Jolene Ellen, you are not leaving." Her father had stormed into the room, shouting up a mess. Startled, she whirled around, an auburn braid hitting her cheek.
"Daddy, I gotta! You saw what happened, I have to help-"
"You don't really think that was a goddess, do you? The Greek gods never existed, and I know I raised you better than to ever think that! You're gonna leave your mother, your sisters, the farm, to go serve some imaginary deity? The only God you serve is the Lord, and he demands you stay here!" He smelled like whiskey, which surprised Jolene. He usually only drank after he thought everyone was asleep.
"I know it's gonna be hard, but the farm will be fine, get one of the little ones to help with the smaller things!" Jolene offered, clasping her suitcase shut. "Daddy, you know I've never done anything like this in my life. I'm your poster child! But I'm going to do this." With that, the redhead confidently grabbed her suitcase, her eyebrows knitted together. Walking past her father, she hesitated before planting a kiss on his cheek and running out of the room, towards the yard where her sisters and mother were waiting. With tearful goodbyes, Jolene left her family for the first time in her life. Walking to the Greyhound bus stop, she boarded the next bus to Nashville, set to arrive late in the night. Or, early in the morning, depending how you swung it.
Arriving at the Parthenon with nothing but streetlamps to light her way, as the stars she so loved were no longer visible, Jolene's stomach ached with anxiety...
