my new red-tailed hawk, Revali. His trap weight was 1010g. He is destined to be my falconry bird (hunting partner) this season and will be released back into the wild in a few years.
I am an apprentice falconer, so I am licensed to keep and train this bird under the supervision of a more experienced falconer for two years. I have passed state inspections and tests, and was deemed fit to house and care for a raptor.
Trap day:
Not featured: him not understanding the glove
2nd Day off Trap:
Other shots from this week:
First fist jump, 7 days off trap:
enjoy! feel free to ask me questions.

•♕• how did you get into falconry? •♔• I started by volunteering with bird of prey education and rehab, it kinda spiraled from there! I met a falconer online and went on a hunt with him and his goshawk, and he wanted me as an apprentice. Its a lot of work to get the license, but I adore birds and this is something that is amazingly awesome.

Where did you get him? and why are you going to release him in a few years over keeping him and using him again? I trapped him from the wild, which is why he will eventually be going back into it. He is a wild bird. Right now he sees me as a food source, and soon he will see me as a hunting partner. But releasing him will mean he will hopefully go off, raise chicks, and increase the population of his species. 90% of raptors do not make it through their first year. He is a first year bird. I have taken him and am training him to hunt better. He should, by that logic, raise better hunters. I'm only borrowing him for a little bit.

I didnt realize you actually caught him from the wild, I guess thats what "trap day" is lol. How did you catch him? Has he shown any aggression towards you since you brought him home? I have some experience with Red Tail Hawks. The college I went to has a permit to own one that they have had since 1978 I believe. In a few years he will be the oldest hawk on record. I had to clean his enclosure and got to feed him mice/Gerbils/Rats.

I have some experience with Red Tail Hawks. The college I went to has a permit to own one that they have had since 1978 I believe. In a few years he will be the oldest hawk on record. I had to clean his enclosure and got to feed him mice/Gerbils/Rats. Oh man i forgot to answer this! We trapped him using a device called a B/C Trap. Its basically a hard mesh dome; you stick the bait (live mice, rats, squirrel, rabbit, etc) inside. On the outside there are nooses, once the bird lands on the trap and starts to try to get at the quarry, his feet and talons get tangled, then we come in and rescue him. BC traps are the most common ones used. There are some others, too. The only real issue with a BC is that you cannot, I repeat, CANNOT, leave your trap. A bird can easily get hurt in it by fighting, and the trap makes it so they can't stand up. They can only mute (poop) when upright, and can easily overheat to death. Here is a pic of a BC trap As for aggression, not really? He's bit me a few times, but those were my fault. I've been footed once by him, but it was an accident; he got me while he decided to fly off the fist. He likes me; I feed him lol
