I'm a pianist and have been taking lessons for a little over a year, but I'm already pretty advanced. I'm currently on 4th year books. Anyway, what instruments do you guys play/want to play? Have you been in band? Let's talk music bc there's nothing else to do

i'm going into my third year of playing french horn! i have a bit of experience with trumpet and piano on the side, but i'm not very good, as i'm self-taught.

I play trumpet and I've been playing it for 8 years or so I used to be in band in middle school, then did two years of marching band in high school. But now I just practice by myself

i've played alto sax for 5 years and bari for 2. i'm actually going to perform in a musical on alto, but i only have one week to learn the music rip. i'm in my high school's concert, symphonic, and marching bands.

aaa, that's really cool! I've thought about signing up for band because it sounds like a lot of fun, but there isn't a band instrument I'd be interested in. I do love brass though. Trumpets sound amazing (if they're not squeaky, like many of the trumpet players at my school are, aha), and I love that smooth sound sax has.

oh yeah it is :3
Also you play sax? I've always wanted to learn to play that

yeah, at my school, pretty much everyone is bad, until you get up to symphonic band. marching band is super fun. it's different in every school so i won't say too much about it, but if it's run properly, it'll be a class you'll never forget. regular band is fun, to. if you don't want to be so squeaky you can try mellophone, which is basically a marching french horn
the hardest part to learn coming from a brass instrument would be the different mouthpiece. i tried teaching my friend (who plays tuba) how to play bari sax, and he had problems with his embouchure even though he learned the fingerings pretty quickly. if you want to learn you definitely should. an alto is cheap to rent, and you can get a good beginners mouthpiece and synthetic reed for under $50, which will last you a long time

I'm probably going to sound really ignorant for asking this, but What is the difference between alto/baritone sax? Is it just the same as an alto or baritone singer, but with the sax? Are there bass saxes and soprano saxes?

Oh yeah I'd have to agree there about marching band. It was fun besides some of the fundie blocks we had to do. Some where hours long, but it definitely payed out in the end :3
And that's good to know, I'll definitely have to check it out because it's been something I've wanted to learn for a long time! I think I've tried to play it once in middle school a while back, but I only got it to squeak pfft
There's too many instruments I'd like to learn, but I don't think I'll ever have the time. Like piano, drums, and violin

@ froot ooo, I love cellos. I have two friends who have played a duet on their cellos before and that just sealed the deal. I love that rich, resonating quality they have.

yes, its the same difference as singers. there is a very large range of saxophones, but realistically you'll only ever see soprano, alto, tenor, and bari saxes. the rest are either very rare (mezzo soprano, conn-o) or just too impractical (subcontrabass, soprillo). i'm trying to save up for a bass sax, which is the next step down from bari, but the starting price for those new is around $6,000, so that'll probably take a few years
somebody at my school had a 3/4 bass he played in band class. it was really cool
are fundie blocks where you learn/practice the basics of marching? we just call that basics block. yeah, those get tiring, but you have to do it if you don't want to make fools of yourselves. squeaking on sax can be due to something as simple as putting your reed on wrong, or something major like a pad leaking. it's not always the player's fault. it's definitely more complicated than sticking a mouthpiece into a brass instrument

Going on my seventh year as a flutist! I haven't practiced in 1.5 months because of a summer trip and I played yesterday and AAAHHH

Post by broken on Jul 22, 2017 23:47:46 GMT -5
Yeah fundie blocks are basic blocks, sorry for the confusion! We just always called them that
And maybe it wasn't my fault? I have no idea. It's been a while, but I think it was like a little instrument fest where we played instruments to see which one we wanted to learn or something. It might have also been in a music class, who knows.

@ starflight cool! that's what I thought, but I wasn't sure if I was oversimplifying it. thanks for explaining c: @ redfleck aha I've been taking a hiatus from piano lessons and a week ago when my grandparents asked me to play for them it was gyehhhh I haven't played in... probably over 3 months rip
aaa, flutes are one of my favorite instruments. if I had to choose my top 3, it'd be (in no particular order) piano, flute and acoustic guitar.

we did that in 6th grade. i was stuck between bass clarinet and alto sax, but i eventually went with the alto, and i'm glad i did

oh nice. Yeah there were only a few instruments to choose from and I tried about every one of them, most of them I couldn't get a noise out of (the flute).
And I'm pretty sure if you would've chosen differently, you'd still like what you play

@ soli that's not show-offy at all! I love that you're so passionate about music. you must be really talented to play all those instruments! c: did you arrange that song by ear? sometimes I like to sit down and figure out tunes on the piano that way.

hey y'all! i've been playing flute in school band for 6 years. i took piano lessons for a year but now i just kinda mess around on keyboard a lot. i took cello lessons for 2 years, and experienced pit orchestra last year for my school's musical (which was HECKA fun but. i sucked at cello so i could only play like 30% of the music so this year i'm hoping to do pit on flute for Chicago which im pumped about bc ill actually get to play everything!!). i have a ukulele but have yet to really learn how to play. i might get a piccolo for pep band but ?? i'm not sure if i want to buy one. i'm in an alternative band (technically.) so i'm trying to get my hands on a drum set to learn drums bc that's my dream instrument and it's what i'll be playing in the band (and tbh i might do a mix of things - i also want to learn trumpet at some point but learning instruments is expensive aha). i have a lot of song ideas / little melodies and things but no DAWs or anything to actually turn them into something bigger :-/ but yeah! i'm an aspiring music artist / band member. being in a touring alternative band is my dream. playing drums is my dream. in a perfect world i would get into Berklee with some scholarships to help pay and study in Boston and then get my band started with my bandmate :') but i'm not good enough to get in w/ drums which would be a real bummer
i love music i mean i'll be honest, i'm not a music theory expert or the best flutist out there and barely know the basics from piano to translate over to keyboard. i don't know what i'm doing 90% of the time but school band has helped me realize i want to pursue a musical career and i couldn't be happier

𝓣𝓲𝓷𝓾𝓿𝓲𝓮𝓵 oo violin can be gorgeous but it's always seemed like it would be uncomfortable to play? idk i've never tried it. are you still playing piano?

It was just a class I had to take for high school as an elective and I wouldn't be able to afford personal lessons or even my own instrument even if I wanted to.

𝓣𝓲𝓷𝓾𝓿𝓲𝓮𝓵 oh okay. lessons can definitely be expensive, but there are a lot of online resources out there - YouTube has some good tutorials. what instrument would you be interested in playing? schools often have rental instruments, and there are some sites out there for cheaper instruments. you could also try getting recommendations from local music stores or see if someone you know has anything they would be willing to give you / sell for cheap.

True, but I'm not sure if there are any around where I live, though Amazon does have some for pretty cheap prices. And if I could, I'd think consider playing the flute, castanets, or accordion. If I had space and if it wasn't so expensive, then I might also consider the piano, harp, guzheng or erhu.

i can play guitar, ukulele, and viola (2 of the least respected instruments) but tbh i haven't played guitar in years as well as ukulele i played viola this school year but i broke the strings and i still haven't tightened and fixed them so o well
this isn't the thread to say this in but i drop music stuff pretty quickly and i've stopped enjoying it. i still enjoy listening and whatnot and i hope to get back into it but idk. i was mostly a choir kid > and there's a story behind me quitting but im not going to talk about the unecessary

𝓣𝓲𝓷𝓾𝓿𝓲𝓮𝓵 if instruments are cheaper / lower quality they can sometimes make learning difficult bc it can be kind of discouraging (just something to keep in mind) - but aside from that they're good to get the basics down; there are some pretty nice instruments at cheaper prices. and I'd definitely look into Amazon. i have an old yamaha flute from middle school as well as my sister's old flute that we bought at a decent price from someone on craigslist. i would totally give that to you if i could :-/ (like if you had a po box or lived nearby or something haha) good luck! those other instruments sound awesome
