Here potato bugs are these nasty things: THAT IS NOT MY PRECIOUS POTATO BUG WHAT IS THAT It's a desert bug common in the woods out here in California. It probably has all the characteristics of grossness- legs of a tarantula, head of a termite, markings of a wasp... not cool.

as far as the Isopod Debate
most people here call them roly-polies; I call them pill bugs; I've also heard them called potato bugs, sow bugs, and woodlice

I've only ever heard of rollie pollies as rollie pollies. I know Pill Bugs are another common name, but I've only heard locals refer to them as the former.

Lightning bugs sounds cooler. But Lampyridae is even better.
Rolly polies is what I grew up calling them but I've seen/heard pill bugs too but never even heard of a potato bug.
There's this bug here in kansas I don't know what it's officially called at all but we call it a corn biter because it will kill and hollow out corn.
Cicadas are screaming tree horrors.

ngl I thought lighting bugs were some ficticious creature for the longest time. not until I heard fireflies did I realise that the mark twain quote hanging on my english classroom wall was not absolute nonsense.
but I've still not heard a single person call them lightning bugs in the real world. not a single one.
