Some days, there were no interrogations to attend - a peaceful day where he could get on with paperwork. Some days, there were too many to attend, to the point he had to pick and choose. It was a burden that settled alongside being a skilled Truthseeker.
Today was, unfortunately, one of the busier days, and Gale was tired. He had just exited one of the rooms, had scared the living hell out of someone who knew how to lie, who had never considered the presence of a Truthseeker. As he closed the door behind him, he glanced down to Khepri and raised a single eyebrow - the little fox looked up and blinked at him. She was as tired as he was, it showed in her gait. She held a slight limp that had never fully recovered from years ago - but he wouldn't think about that. Instead, he began the walk back to the Phoenix Division, daemon at his heels and eyes half-closed. She could be his eyes. There were no problems there.
In the recent weeks, there had been heightened 'crime', though Gale held suspicions that it was just officers finally clamping down on younger magical folk who were causing trouble. Most of them lied through fear, some of them lied because they were good at him, and some of them thought they were telling the truth. Nonetheless, almost all of them would lie about the circumstances. They were all equally surprised to be called out, too.
And, and, he had his own job to do. It was of his own free will that he let himself get dragged into this pie of sh*t, accepted that yeah, okay, sometimes people needed help in the interrogations. It had become a pain, and he didn't enjoy it anymore. It was grating on his nerves, but hell, he was a decent person. He'd continue doing it because there weren't many Truthseekers who were on his side of the law, though that - hell, that amused him. People did not realise that he didn't care about morals, that he couldn't give a damn about people breaking the law. He was here because it was his job and he had fun in the Phoenix Division; if he had been a different person, or the person he had been before, he would've been out of here a long, long time ago. As it was, he remained because he had something to stay for.
Khepri's jaws opened in a wide yawn, and she paused in walking. Gale did not. He did, however, glance back to see if she was okay. She stared at him through narrowed eyes, both ears turned back as if listening to something behind her. After a couple of seconds, she shook herself out and trotted to catch up, and the two continued to walking. Sometimes she heard things that Gale couldn't, and he knew to trust that she'd tell him if something was wrong. She'd probably heard something in another room. She was becoming more paranoid by the day, which wasn't particularly surprising.
"Are you bored yet?" she asked quietly, reverting to their native tongue. Gale, mildly surprised at the sudden Arabic, glanced down at her and shook his head. "I am. That means you should be. I don't understand."
"You will," he told her softly, and left the conversation there.
He entered the Phoenix Division in time to hear the gist of what Alphonse was saying - reports. Goddamn it. He scratched his jaw lightly and gritted his teeth. Today was just aiming to grate on his nerves until he snapped, but hey, it was okay. He could do that. No big deal. He caught sight of their Chief going to his office, but decided that, no, he didn't want to talk to Al. Instead, he turned his attention to Quinn's voice, and smiled faintly. A small comfort in stressful times.
It seemed that Khepri's thoughts were along the same vein, because she darted away from his side for the first time that day. She was quick to bound over to where Quinn was, immediately settling near the man and wagging her tail in a lazy but doglike motion. Gale had no doubts that she'd be demanding affection from Adamh soon.
The thought of doing his report on time and filing it to Al as soon as he could was tempting, but so was story time. He glanced to his desk and squinted thoughtfully, before he shrugged idly and made his way to follow his daemon, instead. He liked the Phoenix Divison for three reasons: one) Alphonse was a wonderful leader, two) Quinn was here, which made it infinitely more homely, and three) it was friendly. The atmosphere was unlike anywhere he'd ever worked before - it was something of a comfort when he was overburdened with work. It also meant that Khepri didn't have to complain to him all the time - she often excused herself to sit with Quinn solely because he was entertaining to her. One of the very few humans she talked to aside from Gale himself.
Today was turning out to be hell, but at least he could be entertained for a short time before he actually did his report. That was something, at least.
