Mottlepaw followed after his friend, grinning sheepishly at Oakkit's praise. With every step toward the camp's entrance, he worked on easing the knot at the pit of his stomach. It will be an adventure. It will be fun! And who knows, we'll probably be the camp heroes when we bring Squirrelpelt back. Even so, Mottlepaw would be fine with being just Oakkit's hero. *phillipa soo voice* that would be enough
There was Tinyflower, guarding the entrance. Mottlepaw wasn't too familiar with the she-cat, and he couldn't imagine getting caught before even stepping paw outside of camp. "Oh, Oak--!" Mottlepaw began in a quiet, warning tone, trailing off as Tinyflower began to speak.
Oh. Okay. It looked like there wouldn't be trouble "escaping" after all. Mottlepaw blinked uneasily, though managed to sound cool and relaxed (as if this were the sort of thing he and Oakkit did on the daily). "Thanks. We will! See you later, Tinyflower."
Mottlepaw almost stumbled rushing away from the entrance, grinning at Oakkit with the thrill of getting away with something. "Well, here we are, Oakclaw," he meowed, stifling a laugh of excitement. "I heard her trail went by the near stream. That doesn't really help, though, if a monster took her." He frowned thoughtfully. "Maybe the Twolegplace, then?"

AHHH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DOGGO PICTURE IT'S GOING GREAT SO FAR
Thrushface glanced at Deadeye, grateful for his encouragement and presence. The strange cat stuck in the tree didn't seem to be harmful after all, but Thrushface was glad Deadeye was there either way. She knew he could be incredibly fierce in battle, or soft and compassionate in events like this. There was really no losing with him.
"You got it!" Thrushface called up the trunk, brow furrowed in worry. Leaf seemed to be descending pretty fast, perhaps spurred on by nerves. The large warrior watched as the rogue finally hit the forest floor, noticing just how shaken she seemed to be from the experience. She seemed extremely dizzy, perhaps from the height of her perch--or hunger?
"There's really no need for you to repay us!" Thrushface exclaimed in surprise, blinking warmly. "This is our Clan's territory, though, so you shouldn't be hunting here. It was a pleasure helping you out, but some of our Clanmates may not be as welcoming if they find you on our territory." She paused, looking concerned. "Please eat that squirrel, though. We don't want to drag a fainted cat to Sagegaze!" She glanced at Deadeye and Grasspaw with amusement.
"I'm Thrushface, by the way."

There wasn't any time to meet with Sagegaze and Rabbitpaw. What StarClan had told them was too important to hold it back. Usually prophecies were kept behind the scenes for a while as it was picked apart and analyzed thoroughly, but Mothstar felt as if this was something that needed to be brought to light now. If what Ruststar said was true... If there were four cats in her Clan that were threatening her and her Clanmates... Something needed to be done. Mothstar wasn't going to stand around and let her Clan fall apart because of four traitors to the warrior code. If need be she would give up all her remaining lives to strike down the plague that was going to soon fall upon her Clan. It was her job as leader to lay down her lives for her Clan's safety.
Mothstar, with determination igniting in her eyes, stepped out of her den with a cold calmness. She held up her tail like a flag to show she meant nothing but business. All eyes needed to be on her. This was important - too important to keep it a secret from her Clan.
"Cats of VerdantClan!" Mothstar yowled out as she gracefully leaped up onto the spot where announcements are made. She took in a deep breath, a moment of silence, before she went on. Even cats who didn't have time to properly gather would hear her words - she could make herself become quite loud should she will it, and right now, she willed just that. "StarClan has come to me with a vision, a prophecy." She scanned the crowd for any signs of the medicine cat and her apprentice. Mothstar was sure she would have them, or at least Sagegaze, speak up before this spontaneous gathering was over. "VerdantClan will soon see turbulent times. We must all be on guard; four of our very own live within the shadows. Who these cats are is unknown. While this information seems frightening, we must stick together through these times ahead. Those who seek the light will be known, while those who hide in the shadows will be rooted out like the snakes they are, and VerdantClan does not take lightly to snakes in our midst..." Her words ended with a faint growl, a warning to those cats Ruststar warned her about. It was obvious that she wasn't going to take this threat lightly. If she found out who even just one of the four cats was then she would certainly let them know how she felt about them. No cat, especially not a Clan cat, would destroy Mothstar's precious Clan. "the spot where announcements are made" I really need to get on this territory/dens/landmarks stuff lmaoMallowstem hadn't meant to be creepy or anything. But at some point in the night, the black-furred warrior slipped from the warriors' den, feeling something was amiss. For a few minutes she simply paced back and forth outside Mothstar's den, willing herself to enter but not getting around to it. When she heard movement inside, Mallowstem quickly bounded away, pretending to busy herself.
Something was definitely up, though. Mallowstem's eyes grew wide as Mothstar leaped up to address the Clan, her stature simultaneously regal and menacing. It was hard to focus with shawty looking so fine, admittedly. But Mothstar's words were...impossible to not regard with rapt attention.
"Evil among us?!" she thought aloud with a hiss, the fur along her neck raising. Her green gaze flickered to the congregated cats, flanking her on every side.
Four of our own.

With Mottlepaw's voice changing to Phillipa Soo, Oakkit's voice turned to Lin-Manuel Miranda's. The tabby kit felt his tail twitch as he looked Tinyflower over. He had heard Mottlepaw try to warn him about her being there, but Oakkit knew there was no need to worry about the tiny warrior. Tinyflower visited the nursery a lot and had a lot of fun stories to tell. The kit knew they could trust Tinyflower out of all cats to not rat them out. "I'll tell you about everything when we get back, Tinyflower! Then you tell me a story," he chirped. Tinyflower gave a mew of agreement right as Oakkit slipped from the camp, waving his tail for Mottlepaw to follow.
Once outside Oakkit puffed his fur out in excitement. He knew where he was - he had been out here quite a few times before due to sneaking out. He purred and turned his large amber eyes on Mottlepaw. "The stream? I know where that is!" But as Mottlepaw mentioned the monster again and then twolegplace, Oakkit found himself pushing the stream out of his thought. He narrowed his eyes, huffed, and then nodded. "To twolegplace it is." Before he could give his companion time to respond, the little brown kit was running off in the direction of the twoleg territory.

This cat didn't seem dangerous at all. She sounded friendly with a mixture of fright from being stuck and relief from getting down. Deadeye had known right away that this foreign she-cat was not of their own, a loner more than likely, but she was still a cat. She had needed help and help was what she got.
The black and white tomcat offered a smile to the foreign she-cat. He stepped forward in a peaceful manner; as he did his fur brushed against Thrushface's pelt. While he felt a burst of warmth flush over him, he stayed where he was, finding reassurance in the closeness of Thrushface. "I'm Deadeye," he greeted once Thrushface gave her own name. "You need the squirrel more than we do." He agreed with Thrushface about the squirrel. This loner needed it. If she didn't get something to eat the Clan group might just have to bring her to Sagegaze.

In her urgency of needing to address the Clan, Mothstar hadn't even noticed the thick scent of Mallowstem near her den. Usually she would have noticed something like that. She would have found it odd from most of her Clanmates, but from Mallowstem it would have brought the spotted tabby a feeling of warmth, of peace really. But she hadn't noticed it. She didn't even notice Mallowstem until after she had announced the prophecy.
Amber eyes fell down below to the black she-cat. Mothstar's stance remained powerful even as she looked at Mallowstem. The tabby she-cat found herself looking at the other female for longer than needed, and it didn't help that Mallowstem looked hella good right now.
A sigh slipped from the tabby; she nodded. "We must be on high alert with this knowledge," she replied with firm words. With the evil among them anything could happen, especially when there were no known cats who would gladly turn on their Clanmates without warning.

"My name's Leaf," she mewed hesitantly. "It's really nice of you to say, but..." She could feel herself grow hot with shame, highly aware of the fact that she's still standing on another cat's territory. Her gratitude only soared - these cats were so friendly, saving her from her own stupidity, even letting her take the squirrel, even insisting she eats lest she collapses - how can she not repay them? No, her pride won't let her. Nothing in her mind is free; it's all give and take, and she won't be the cats in the abandoned alleyways that do nothing but take and take and take.
"I must insist I do - do something for you," Leaf pressed. "Anything! I could - could hunt -" But I'm not good at that "- maybe help chase off intruders -" Gah that sounds terrifying "- or find herbs?"
Her gaze turned towards the sad little squirrel. "Either way, I - I - I can't eat that," she meowed, her stomach gurgling in protest. "I need that for my father - he's, he's very sick."
A sly thought sneaked into her mind. Maybe if they take you on, they'll let you bring Ashy. Maybe they'll feed him, take care of him. They seem like they can't bear to leave a cat in need. Maybe if you hunt for them, maybe they'll teach you how to hunt better, teach you what herbs will help, then he won't -
Horrified and tempted by her own thoughts, Leaf mentally shook them off - then felt like the world was shifting under her paws. "I just need - I just need -" she fumbled with her words, unable to get them straight.

psst yo does anyone else want to put their cat in the Clan meeting so we can drama
Mottlepaw glanced at Oakkit in surprise, watching as the excited young feline bounded off in the right direction. For a moment, the apprentice wondered exactly how Oakkit knew his way around the territory--from the river to the Twolegplace!--but then pushed the thought away with a shake of his head. Oakkit was quite the adventurer, it seemed; far more daring than Mottlepaw had been as a kit.
"I'm coming!" the mottled tom called with a short laugh, silently admiring Oakkit. He seemed like the type to go off in pursuit of his mother, no matter what Mottlepaw--or any other cat--said. Mottlepaw's heart felt warm--he was glad they were friends.
--
Thrushface forced herself to remain calm as Deadeye's pelt was pressed against her own, for the second time that day. She glanced at him, grateful that he had the same views as her. She could think of more than one Clan cat who would be quite offended at the peaceful offering of prey to an outsider.
"Are you..." Thrushface's ears pricked forward, her eyes brightening as she listened to Leaf's suggestions. "You mean you're interested in joining us?" She hesitated for a moment, wondering how Mothstar would react. It wasn't very often that outsiders requested to join VerdantClan, but... They had just lost a cat recently. In the harshness of the wild, more helping paws would benefit and strengthen the Clan.
Pushing her muzzle close to Deadeye's ear, she began to speak in a whisper. "Should we ask her to take us to the father? We could fetch Sagegaze or Rabbitpaw... or we could bring them to camp, if Mothstar allows us to help them. But they seem like they need nourishment quick, huh?" Her eyes flashed with concern. Maybe they should hunt immediately for Leaf and her father.
As Leaf began to speak once more, Thrushface nodded patiently, waiting for her to finish her sentence. "What do you need, Leaf?"

This was probably the fifth time Oakkit had been out of camp before. He wasn't completely sure considering how he had lost count. He knew his first adventure had been about a moon ago, and from there on out he just kept sneaking out no matter how many times Squirrelpelt punished him. There had been a time when Mothstar herself had spoken with Oakkit about his little escapes, but he was a kit, he didn't listen to authority. Mothstar had said something about delaying his apprenticeship if she caught him going outside again, but that hadn't fazed the tom, not like it should have. He was a brazen kit, that was for sure.
The tabby trilled as Mottlepaw called out, his voice a laugh. Oakkit turned to eye his friend with glimmering eyes. "Isn't this exciting? Our first true mission as leader and deputy!" The little tom gave a bounce. He was excited, that was true, but deep down he knew he had to be serious as well. This was a mission to find his mother. He had to bring her back.
---
Even if the warrior code told against it, Deadeye would never let a sick or injured cat simply die when there was something he could do about it, even if that cat was outside the Clan. Hearing Leaf explain the state that her father was in made the long-furred tom feel desperate to help the little family. Leaf seemed like a genuine cat, somecat he could trust. Thrushface seemed to feel the same way. Standing beside the she-cat, Deadeye felt like he could almost hear her own thoughts running through her mind as clearly as he could hear his own.
He felt something like hope blossom in his chest. A petal tried to wilt as he thought about Mothstar and her strict loyalty to the warrior code. Would she even let a loner and her sick father join the Clan? They weren't of Clan blood. Mothstar believed in purity, but...would she decline a cat trying to provide and help her sick father?
Deadeye remained silent as Thrushface spoke to the loner. He offered his warmth and friendliness out to Leaf in hopes of making her feel more comfortable around him, Thrushface, and Grasspaw. After her tree experience and finding all these foreign cats, Deadeye was sure Leaf was in a huge amount of stress and confusion.
The tom leaned in closer to Thrushface as the she-cat began to speak quietly to him. He tilted his head against her own to give his hushed response. "I say we let Leaf eat first; we can hunt something for her father while she eats. She needs nourishment, like you said. If she takes us to her father, we'll do that next. I'd like to see how bad off he is - depending on his strength it may be easier to bring Sagegaze and Rabbit to him, not the other way around." His words were only a suggestion, and while he felt like it was what they needed to do, it would be up to Thrushface to agree or disagree with his words, especially since she seemed to be the one mostly communicating with Leaf at the moment.
He placed half of his attention back to Leaf as Thrushface asked the other she-cat what she needed. "We'll do all we can for you and your father, Leaf. We won't let hungry and sick cats suffer."

The warmth of relief swept through her at Deadeye's words. "Thank you - thank you so much," she murmured to give her time to consider Thrushface's question. Are you interested in joining us?
It made her nervous - who's "us?" Was it just the three cats? Or were there more? Were they a close-knit group like the allies in the neighborhood? She knew of the groups that live by the homes of the two-legged creatures - were forest cats like them? It can't be, these cats were perhaps a million times kinder. Then again, they lived on plump mice and squirrels rather than fighting over scraps in the garbage cans. Still, joining a group as an outsider meant uncertainty. Meant fighting for respect. Meant scars and threats. Something she and her father fled when they escaped to the forests.
But it also meant safety. Security. Something she and Ashy desperately needed. Maybe they could join - just for a while - and if things go south, they could always do what they've always done - run.
"I think I need," Leaf continued, swaying on her feet, "to sit down." She more or less collapsed to the ground, wanting to lie down but not wanting to seem weak in front of these strangers. No, not strangers - Thrushface and Deadeye. "And I need to bring this to Ashy," she said, waving her tail over the squirrel. By now she's accepted that she probably needs to eat that squirrel, but something in her still cringes at the thought of eating in front of them while her father's still out there hungry.

"It is pretty exciting," Mottlepaw admitted, scanning the undergrowth warily as they navigated their way to the Twolegplace. There didn't seem to be many cats, nor patrols out at this late hour--maybe they were just lucky, though.
Mottlepaw trudged on beside Oakkit, glancing up as he passed a familiar-looking fallen, rotten tree. "Not far," he murmured. "I wonder how Squirrelpelt'll react when a kit and apprentice find her and bring her home, huh?" Nervous hope was evident in his voice.
