((oh Mother Dark we didn't list one of your characters for the jury, do you want one of them to be on it?)) --Thunderheart "Herbalists. Greywind. We will be having a trial to decide Sandstripe's fate, and whether she is truly guilty. Greywind, you will be part of a small group of cats we have selected to listen and discuss her fate with the priests. Sandstripe, I suggest you get your thoughts together and act with more dignity than you did in front of the rat's nest. Greywind, please bring her store of herbs with you, so that we can show them as evidence." The old tom turned and left, heading for the ancestor's hall to fill in the priests on the situation. --Sandstripe "Same goes to you," Sandstripe muttered under her breath. She looked at Greywind and forced a small smile. "I guess you'll be choosing my fate, huh? You and whoever else those mouse brains picked." She laughed. "I guess I don't have to pretend I like them anymore. I know I'm dead. This trial is just an act to get you all back on their side. Well, let's get it over with." She wrapped the poisonous herbs in a leaf bundle and handed them to the royal guard before walking after Thunderheart, making sure not to stray to far from the guard's side; she secretly wanted the protection. --Stoneheart "Then come. But remember: do not speak unless I tell you to." Stoneheart lifted himself to his feet and led his daughter down the stone steps of the royal tower. He ordered the two guards by the entrance to follow him. His pace was slow and uneven, but as they neared the Ancestor's Hall he lifted his head and did his best to hide his weakened state. When they entered, he kept his eyes fixed straight ahead of him; he did not want to look any traitors in the eyes. He sat on an elevated platform, under the light of an old stained glass window, and gestured with his tail for Dewfern to sit at his side. Thunderheart sat on the other side of him. --Skysong Skysong walked in between the King and the crowd of gathered cats. "Welcome," she said, her voice echoing softly in the old chamber. "We have gathered here today, in the hall of our ancestors, in the hopes that they will watch over us and guide us to the truth, and to justice. We have reason to believe that someone has committed an act of treason. According to the law, this is punishable by death. Before we sentence on of our own to such a fate, we wish to give her a chance to explain herself, and for everyone involved to give their perspective. Those of you who have been selected for the jury, please come forward and sit on the platform."

(You royal guard could be guarding the royal family or watching. Either one. ) - - Dewfern"Okay, Dad," was all she said to her father as she followed him out and to the Ancestor's Hall. Seeing Stoneheart's signal, she came to his side and sat down while she absorbed the room. It was incredible to her, this process. There's never been anything like this before, and it might actually be a turning point for the castle? She'd have to see. She gave the jury a little nod and a smile, recognizing a couple of the cats from the crowd. She would have waved to Duskstorm and Wolfbite, but she wasn't really ready for her father to know that she had made friends by escaping her room quite yet. - - LighttailLighttail joined the jury, searching the crowd for Sandstripe. As the ginger she-cat settled on the platform, she found herself feeling a wave of emotion hit her. Not the anger she had been feeling, but sadness. She would miss Sandstripe, no matter what happened. She stared blankly at the royals, silently praying to the ancestors for her former mentor. I don't know if I can decide to kill her. I don't think I can do that.., she admitted to herself, recalling the time she had spent training with her. - - Tawnyclaw"Yeah, I guess-" Tawnyclaw was interrupted by Skysong speaking. She looked up at the priest and mentally prepared herself for this. "Hey, let's get closer," she suggested, picking herself up and padding a little closer to the trial area. The she-cat settled down and perked her ears up, listening intently for Sandstripe. - - FlamewhiskerFlamewhisker padded over quickly to the trial area as the priest started the event. This was exciting. Grim, but exciting. The royal family was just over there, noble and shining in the colored light from the stained glass windows. Near them were the royal guards, almost as regal and important. Awesome. Really, really awesome, he thought with a fierce glimmer of excitement. He sat down and curled his fiery orange tail around his paws in anticipation.

Scartail48 lol just saw you siggie) Basilwhisker tried to hide his happiness at seeing the Princess. He thought for a second what it might be like if she were standing up there on her own ruling. Honeyburr nodded and followed Tawnyclaw upcloser to the front. Rosebrair continued to hide toward the back. Waspbite tried to contain his excitement at realizing how many she cats there really were in the castle.

((Hello!)) Duskstorm and Wolfbite moved to sit on the platform, Duskstorm glancing up towards Dewfern. His eyes were sad, holding all of the stress he was feeling about the trial; the heaviness of deciding another cats fate. He silently looked away, releasing a heavy sigh, before he straightened up and gazed down at Sandstripe, curling his tail around his paws. Wolfbite nudged him to cool him off a little, then looked towards Skysong to continue.

((this isn't going to function like a real life trial exactly, because, they are cats, and I don't want it to just be my characters talking to each other the whole time, ))
--Skysong
"First we will hear the accuse speak. Sandstripe, please come forward. Tell us what you know about this assassination attempt. And keep in mind that you are not only speaking in front of your castlemates, but your ancestors as well." Skysong gestured up to the stained glass windows.
--Sandstripe
Sandstripe stepped forward. She looked up at Stoneheart, astonished that he was not only alive, but well enough to participate in this trial. She had truly underestimated him.
But if he's still alive . . . I might actually be able to get out of this alive, too. Sandstripe cleared her throat. "Let me say, first of all, that I never intended for Stoneheart to die." She heard Stoneheart growl softly and flinched, but she continued on. "I have noticed ever since the death of the queen and her son, our castle has declined. I understand that Stoneheart needed a period to grieve, but things were getting out of hand. I tried to talk to Stoneheart about this multiple times. When words didn't get through to him, I decided to send him a stronger message. It was mild poison, not enough to kill him, but enough, I hoped, to bring him to his senses."
Her voice trembled and she looked up at the royal family. "I know that what I have done is treasonous. But please know that I was doing what I thought had to be done. I have been a loyal herbalist for my whole life, and I have looked after every cat in this castle with the best possible care. Please, if you can find it in your hearts to forgive me, I swear on my ancestors I will never do anything like this again. If you must banish me, then banish me, but please . . . I did not take your life, Stoneheart, so please do not take mine." She lowered her gaze to the floor and tried to look as pitiful as she could.
--Skysong
"Thank you, Sandstripe." Skysong gazed over the crowd. "If any of you would like to speak, including those on the jury, and testify to Sandstripe's guilt or innocence, or to share what you think her fate should be, now is your chance to speak. One at a time, if you please."

Duskstorm sucked in a soft gasp at her lie, and glanced at Wolfbite, who slightly nodded at him. 'Do your thing, kid.' He murmured. Flattening his ears against his head as he prepped himself to speak, he slowly stood and moved forwards, daintily placing his paws before each other. 'Sandstripes' actions have been treasonous; her intentions misguided; her initial silence, a threat.' Wolfbite stared at the oriental, wondering what on earth he was trying to achieve. Then he remembered that Stoneheart himself was here- and that Duskstorm had to be careful of how he presented himself. The black cat gazed up at Dewfern, then cast his gaze to Thunderheart; and then, finally, Stoneheart. 'Dont let Stoneheart-' Don't let Stoneheart what? he pondered, remembering what she had tried to tell him. Looking away, he glanced over at the castle cats. 'But Sandstripe has been a loyal and trustworthy member of our community for many more moons than some of you have even been alive. She has nurtured and cared for us, she has been a friend and ally.' He looked up at the King. 'She has been family.' He breathed in deeply, thinking his next moves carefully. 'Any act of betrayal hurts. An act of betrayal from someone who is close to you... that hurts more. It rips your heart out and tears it to pieces- it makes you angry.' He flicked an ear, looking around. 'Yet- although the action itself was misguided... the thoughts behind it were not. Sandstripe chose to act on behalf of her frustration and concerns for the wellbeing of the cats of this kingdom.' He straightened up, heart hammering in his chest. One toe out of line and he'd be joining Sandstripe on that podium. But perhaps- Stoneheart did not need to hear from family. Perhaps he needed the stone cold truth. Duskstorm turned to gaze up at the king again, searching to meet his gaze. 'It is no unknown knowledge that we have been struggling. The castle has mourned their losses, but we all have our jobs to do. The hunters must feed the cats of this kingdom. The guards must do their duty. The apprentices must continue to train; so why, after so many, many moons; does our king not lead?' He drew in a shaky breath, gazing up at him. 'A kingdom cannot thrive without the presence of its ruler- its cats lose their moral, their belief, their faith, and rumours begin to fly, until, eventually- they end up standing where we are today. Sandstripes actions were malintentioned and- even- unforgivable... but desperation to bring a friend out of their darkness and back into the light... could drive anybody to do something they will eventually regret.'
((I'm sorry this is really horribly put together and it's very ramble-y))

--Stoneheart
Stoneheart watched Duskstorm with a small frown on his face, listening intently to everything the hunter said. For the first half of Duskstorm's speech, Stoneheart seemed almost approving, but when the speech turned to his leadership, he leaned forward slightly and narrowed his eyes. As a king, he was careful not to reveal too much about what he was thinking in front of his subjects, but he couldn't help the small wrinkles on his muzzle, hinting at a restrained snarl. By the end of it, he regained his composure and leaned back, but a dark air still hung around him.
--Thunderheart
Thunderheart was less skilled at hiding his emotions and gaped at Duskstorm as he spoke. He realized that he himself had never had the guts or the skill with words to speak so frankly to Stoneheart. He glanced nervously at his brother, waiting for an order to send Duskstorm out of the room, but it never came.
--Skysong
Skysong also glanced at the king, wondering what he was thinking. She could sense the restrained anger in his posture and decided to intervene before Stoneheart got a chance to act on his temper. "That was well said, Duskstorm," she said, giving the tom a reassuring smile. "You have brought the complexity of this situation to light, and we will surely have a lot to discuss. Is there anyone else?"

((I feel like Duskstorm is walking on hot coals rn?))
Duskstorm bowed deeply to Stoneheart before reclaiming his place, releasing a shaky breath. 'You should prepare your speech for your own trial.' Wolfbite playfully said. 'Stoneheart doesn't look happy.' He glanced up at the king, and Duskstorm refused to look. 'Don't get yourself in trouble, Wolfbite.' 'Eh. I'm old.' 'Wolfbite.' 'I ain't sayin a word till I'm called upon, kid. I ain't flowery with words like you.'

((hey who wants some meaningless information. Scartail and I decided that the queen's name was Eaglefeather and she was a siamese-looking cat and her brother's name was Sunriver (not Sunheart. I honestly don't remember why I gave Thunderheart and Stoneheart the same suffixes. I think it was going to be some thing where the royal family had the same endings on their names but then?? why isn't Dewfern named Dewheart. Help me). Sunriver looked like a lynx point cat. He was dainty.))

(He's a good boy. >~>)
- - Dewfern
Dewfern was just... Really proud of Duskstorm. His speech was just what her father needed to hear, even if he didn't like it. She gave him a smile from her spot, regardless of if her father would see it or not. This is good. We're making progress, she thought, finding console in the fact that Stoneheart was finally forced to listen to and acknowledge the problems the castle had been suddenly having.
(Sorry, but Lighttail is stressed. (Um yeah, Bloodrose it's kind of everyone trash the royals time right now. XD))
- - Lighttail
"I want to say something," Lighttail mewed loudly from somewhere within the jury. She straightened her back and stood up, trying to appear a little more important and dignified for her case. It was going to be important that they respected her and agreed with her, since no one usually seemed to. "I agree with Duskstorm." She hadn't expected the next few words to come out of her mouth, but they did. They really truly did. "I've lived in the castle for many moons. When I was 7 moons old, I started my apprenticeship under Sandstripe who... Was actually very good. She taught me everything I know today. How to organize herbs, which ones to use in what situations..." She glanced up at the king. "How to deal with difficult patients. And I have to say, no one has been more difficult than our king." Her fur bristled momentarily, but she quickly took a deep breath and flattened it. "Maybe moons and moons of dealing with constant scrutiny from our superiors has taken a toll on my former mentor. Her judgment may have been seriously-" she paused briefly and glanced at Sandstripe. "Seriously flawed, but maybe she really did think she was doing the best for her castle. I'm not saying I want a 'murderer' or whatever she calls herself, in our castle- she needs to leave- but she was trying to save us! And I'm furious with her for letting me take the blame and making the mousebrained decision to poison someone, but someone needs to take control and show respect to us! Because stones of society are falling apart without you, but they crack when you accuse and ignore us." She sat back down again and tightened her tail around her paws. She may have gone too far, but Lighttail believed every word she had said.

--Stoneheart
Stoneheart couldn't hold back any longer and glared openly at Lighttail. He remained silent purely because he was stunned by what he was hearing. He had been receiving lectures from the herbalists for moons, but had brushed it off as overbearingness. But to be faced with such open criticism, and to see that the entire castle seemed to agree with it, he began to realize just how severe the situation had become.
--Sandstripe
Sandstripe stared at Lighttail. Out of everyone in the castle, Sandstripe felt the worst for betraying her. Part of her felt angry at Lighttail for not defending her more.

Rosebrair had started to flick her tail she was annoyed that there were so many cats who didn't believe in the king. She hoped someone would say something as she would never manage it.
Honeyburr watched with wide eyes as cats began to make bold statements about their beliefs about the king's lack of guidence. She felt it was best to keep her mouth shut and examine the mistakes made but these first cats so she would not fail in her attempts. She glanced slightly at Tawnyclaw hoping that her friend would decide the same.
Waspbite paid no attention to the trial. He had been drooling over the beautiful she cat who say next to the King who could only be the princess. He could not see anything but what was directly beside her and heard nothing either.
Basilwhisker watched the trial with wide eyes. He willed himself not to seem swayed by either side but knew if the princess came into question he would have trouble holding his tongue. He knew that in order to stay in the hood graces of the king and to be near the true ruler of the kingdom he would have to act royal to the old king.
(Will the jury be casting stones?)
