Shilo's face lit up. "It's September for me too! September 18, 2002." She smiled. This year had been the hardest she'd ever had to live through thus far. But, despite that, it wasn't going to ruin her birthday. Despite losing her mother, she had still gotten presents from her. The sweater she wore, the new bow in her hair (it was larger than her other bows, so it stuck out more) and her shoes, as well as some new music books, and a full collection of the Narnia Chronicles. Her father had gotten her a set of throwing knives that she would start practicing with in the next few weeks, a pair of boots to practice stealth, and a few other books as well. It had been a good birthday, though she did miss her mom today more than normal.
"Well... the simple answer to that question is yes." Shilo said. "Any planet, any dimension, anything at all from what I've seen and heard. Even different timelines. Like me, for example. Apparently, I've been here before, but when I was an adult."

Combeferre thought for a moment. "2002?" It was strange to him. This girl definitely looked younger than him, but their time lines were off just enough that technically, she was older. "September 25, 2007." It wasn't a particularly important date to him. Just about a month after his first ever day of primary school which was, of course, exciting, but not nearly exciting enough to mention here, where there were literal other worlds and other universes and other people who were right here in front of him. Shilo was from the past, for goodness sakes! And not the distant past, though that would have been cool. Just a few years before. He wondered if they could possibly have met in their world, though he'd never left France and her accent originally had definitely been American. "That's amazing," he whispered. "My father's read me books about the possibility of dimensions conver-converging but it's all theoretical..." his eyes widened. "And you're from the past which means you remember things really clearly that I don't remember at all! About things happening in the world!" he took a deep breath, trying to curb his excitement. This was why a lot of kids hadn't liked him to begin with. Still didn't like him. "You were an adult? You were here but... wow." he was genuinely breathless. "But what if now that you know you were here you don't end up coming here as an adult? What if you knowing changes things?"

"2007? Whoa..." This kid was from the future, and though he looked older, she was actually. She liked that, she wasn't going to lie. But that didn't matter now. This kid knew things about the world that hadn't even happened in her world yet! How cool was that! Shilo lit up when this boy started talking about quantum physics. That had been one of her first conversations in the House! "I read a book once about that too! And about the different layers of dimensions and the grid system of dimensions versus worlds and I was even talking about it with someone before, about how maybe the House is in the center of it all." She explained happily. Theoretical or not, it was still an interesting topic, and something important to the House in particular.
When he mentioned her knowing things about the past she shrugged. "Um, maybe." She said. Her life had been pretty sheltered, so there was a pretty good chance that, unless it was important enough for her father to mention to her or her mother, she didn't actually know it. "Well... I don't know. No one can control blinking -- that's what we call it when we come and go. But, if I don't blink in as an adult, then I guess I just don't blink in. Nothing to do about that." Though she didn't like the idea of not blinking in anymore. Especially as an adult where she'd be more useful to everyone else. "But apparently I'm not the only person that has happened to. It happened to this girl Arlo too. It might happen to even more people." Little did she know...

"The world itself doesn't really make sense either, but here we are." Shilo shrugged, but she loved this conversation. And she liked this kid. He was smart, and like her, not very childlike, except maybe when it came to the concept of wonder. "Hmmm, maybe." She wasn't sure she liked the idea of being used as a battery. "But I don't know if that makes any sense. Because the energy that dimensions have is self supplied isn't it? They don't need to use the people and creatures, the people and creatures are more of a symptom of evolution that happened because of the energy already existing. So why this dimension would be any different... Oh! The rooms." She'd forgotten to explain the rooms. "The House has rooms that you can go into. But some are dangerous, so people don't always like going into rooms. They kind of lead to like... other dimensions maybe? I don't know, it's really weird." Shilo shrugged. She didn't have the answers, despite how much she wanted them. At his question, the six year old shrugged again. "I assume people have tried, but no one has. There was a room not to long ago that we couldn't blink out of, instead we'd just freeze. So I think it's entirely up to the House. I don't think we're supposed to have control here. I think... I wonder if the people who come here try to take too much control over things, or have a sense of wanting to take control over things, so the House brings them here to teach them that they can't." Her voice trailed off just a bit as she spoke. She knew that she wished she had more control at least. And then Ferre continued speaking. Sad that the adult blinks in first. She really hadn't wanted that thrown in her face, and her worry and sadness of that flashed across her features for a moment, but she pushed them away. "My friends told me that that wouldn't happen. That they would try to look at me as my own person. So, I'm a different Shilo Saga than the last one."

Arlo glanced over at Elliot- somewhat lost in her thoughts of the "other" Arlo's life in the House, she had apparently failed to notice him. She waved at him before returning her focus to Kaito when he spoke and nodding when he mentioned the House running on its own time. "It's January in my world," she commented. Judging by way the place was decorated- or waiting to be decorated- it should have been sometime in December. "I've heard that it's pretty common for people to come from other versions of Earth, but I've met several people who were from other worlds." The girl seemed to finally brighten a bit at the suggestion. "Yeah sure! I didn't get to do much this year since we were traveling." For a moment she looked a little confused by Elliot's question, but then she remembered Maladict's similar confusion when she'd mentioned Christmas. "Decorate the House for a holiday on Earth- It's pretty fun," she said as she looked into the nearest box of ornaments. Usually she'd give a longer explanation, but she had just woke up when she'd blinked in. (and her roleplayer needed to sleep. Hopefully this post made sense at least, I'll check the thread when I get up)

Winter Lodge -- Kid -- Auransky --cato phoenix"Sort of a House tradition," Kid said to Elliot. "Decorating the tree, I mean. It's fairly often ..." he paused, to spin a small, round ornament between his hands, seeing small reflections of memory in his mind's eye. "What I do. When the Lodge happens, I mean." He glanced up at both of his fellow blinkers, smiling a little. "So I was hoping you'd join me." He nodded along to what Arlo said, recognizing her words. "Yes, I know several people from other worlds." He remembered Rex, for example. And several others. He wasn't as familiar with blinkers confusion over the holidays, however, since newbies had usually become familiar with Earth by the time they were introduced to the Lodge. Again, he was grateful to Arlo. It seemed even know she was one of the better guides in the House. He held out an ornament to Elliot. "You just put these on the tree. Fairly simple."

Katara blinked into the house with a yelp having fallen from the...was that a sky? And was that lava beneath her as she fell. "Oh dear!" She screamed before falling into....water? It was cold...ice cold. She swam to the surface as quick as possible with soaked hair and cold skin. "Could be worse...could be real lava." She muttered before looking around. All she saw was fake lava for miles. Or steps maybe? She had no idea when it came to the House. So she tried to bend the fake lava as she figured it wasn't water. Actually was it lava but cold lava? Hmm maybe. So she just swam trying to find land or something.

Czeslaw blinked into the lodge, laying asleep on his side. He was on a sofa by the fireplace, but the blanket that had been on him was gone and left him cold. The boy curled his appendages in on himself, becoming more of a ball as he relied on the warmth from the fire. He was wearing pajamas, and actually looked quite peaceful, more so than was his typical mood when awake. Thankfully it was nearly daytime in his world, so when awakened by this blink--slowly opening his eyes--he wasn't too annoyed.

Winter Lodge - Arlo, Kid & Eli Elliot wanted to just disappear from this moment in time, he wasn't asking bout an explanation on the holiday, he was asking what they were decorating. He wasn't listening in on the entirety of the conversation. Nonetheless he remained silent towards the two explaining the marvels of the year end festivities. "House tradition.." He softly spoke, it was interesting how other's accepted this reality of being pulled out of their own existence. It was further interesting how the residence of this place would conform to the passage of time. "Thank you for the explanation." He softly replied, giving Arlo a soft look before tuning to Kid, to reach out and accept the ornament. "Very well, I shall join you in your task." He added. I have time after all.

That it doesn't make sense, but here we are with loads of people who shouldn't exist 'cause life was just a really really lucky shot in the dark but we're all here and living and talking and..." Combeferre flushed red as he realized he'd probably been going on too long. Shilo may not have wanted to hear his whole version of why he loved the world, and it wasn't even all that developed yet. He was just a little kid with a very limited worldview. "I suppose it might be self supplied," he allowed, referring once again to the energy that powered the dimension. "But normal dimensions are self-powered. I don't know anything about this one, but if it connects infinite universes together, it has to have some sort of power source outside of itself, right? Like an external battery?" He pushed his glasses up his nose again as he thought, looking around. He wondered if there would be a way to test that. He knew the science hadn't really been invented yet, but maybe one day he'd grow up and invent something that would be able to gauge how much energy a dimension took in and how a place like the Paradox House summoned up enough energy to keep other dimensions tied together. "So... there are other dimensions in this dimension that are dangerous sometimes and that people don't like to enter alone? That makes sense but... I wanna see one," Combeferre admitted with the smallest smile. Combeferre, though not always the best at reading people, could tell that Shilo was upset about the thought of her older self in the House, to some extent. Or at least the way he'd mentioned it. So he just wouldn't broach the topic again. Besides, she had said something much more interesting. "Nice to meet you, Shilo Saga!" he grinned, holding out his hand to shake. "My name is Frédéric Combeferre!"

Shilo watched the boy talk. He seemed excited, very excited... then he trailed off. Was he blushing? Why had he stopped. She was about to ask when he continued with a different subject. Oh, alright then. "Not necessarily. If all other dimensions are self sustaining, it would make more sense that this one was too, than the other way around." The six year old pointed out. "But if you say that this one powers all other dimensions, because it connects them, you could say that this one could have an outter power source. But then you come up with the exact same issue that almost all scientists in this field come across, and why they all became Christian, or um...Theist, of some kind." The was the word right? She was trying to recall the conversation she'd recently over heard her parents having about a very similar topic. That's where a lot of this was coming from. Then he explained the rooms back to her, she nodded. "Um, maybe we could try to find one that's safe." She offered, but she also knew that was a bad idea. Did the lodge also have rooms?
Shilo extended her hand forward, pushing away her negative emotions. No, not on her birthday. "Nice to meet you Frédrék Combeferre. What part of France are you from?" Maybe a subject change to their worlds and lives would be better than discussing the state of the Paradox dimension.

L blinked in, crouched low on his bare feet with his knees folded under him. He was gazing up with his dark eyes out of focus and tugging absentmindedly at his messy hair. At first, he didn’t even notice he’d blinked, he was so lost in thought. This last case had been hard on him, harder than he’d expected it to be...he had told Wataei he needed time alone to think. The young detective shifted slightly, then blinked, coming out of his daze as the smell of wood smoke and hot chocolate alerted him to his appearance in the House. He looked around to make sure he wasn’t in immediate danger, then relaxed and stretched his arms high over his head and yawned. “Thank you.” He said under his breath to the House, grateful that the room suited his current mood so perfectly. He straightened up and crossed the room in a few quick steps, poured himself a steaming cup of hot chocolate, which he topped with marshmallows and whipped cream. Then he made his way back to the couch and climbed on, lowering himself back down to his usual crouch, and sighed. He took a sip before finally noticing Czeslaw. The boy’s peaceful expression brought the ghost of a smile to the edges of his mouth. “Hello.”

Czeslaw blinked his eyes at L when the detective appeared before him, at first assuming it was a dream. He watched for a long time with a careful eye and no noise, at least until he was addressed. "...H-Hi," he murmured in reply, voice low with a level of shyness he didn't typically have around the other blinker. He sat up gradually, bringing his knees to his chest and his back to the couch. He was still nervous around L after what happened, but not outright fearful. Is that... hot chocolate? He wanted to say it, but bit his tongue to hold it back, drawing his head away as if uninterested.

L took another careful sip, burning his tongue despite his best efforts, and watched Czeslaw shift into a more wakeful position. So he was still upset about what had happened in the forest. L wasn’t really surprised. It hadn’t really been talked about after all, since both of them had kept freezing before they could have a proper conversation, and since they’d escaped they hadn’t really seen much of each other. “I didn’t mean to wake you, I’m sorry.” He broke the silence with a small, apologetic smile. Which faded a moment later as he looked away. They were going to have to talk about it, weren’t they? It would be so much easier to pretend nothing had happened, to try and go back to being someone the immortal trusted he could run to if things went bad, but he knew it wouldn’t work no matter how much he wished for it. So there was no point in putting it off. No point at all. “Hold on a minute.” L put his cup down and moved back across the room. When he returned to the couch he had a second steaming mug of hot chocolate, which he presented to Czeslaw after he’d settled himself back on the couch. “There you are, sorry about that.” He paused again. When he spoke, his tone was softer and his wide eyes were serious as they focused on the drink in his hands. “Things really got out of hand in that forest, didn’t they?”

Czeslaw shook his head, trying to express that no apology was necessary. Besides, he had awoken just before L appeared after all. At the detective's order, Czeslaw extended his neck slightly and turned his face just enough to see what L was doing out of the corner of his eye. It could have been out of suspicion, or more likely just simple curiosity, that he watched the hot chocolate being prepared. The boy suddenly averted eye contact at his return, wrapping his arms around his knees defensively. And then he didn't move until a silence had set in. First, he turned his head and one hand to the hot chocolate. After taking it and blowing on it for a moment, eyes trained on the floor, he murmured quietly, "They did... I guess." His voice could hardly be heard through the periodic crackling that overcame the fire. Being unfamiliar with him, one might think he was just tired: his hair was still ruffled from sleep and he was in pajamas, feet tucked close to stay warm. His free hand was balled into a fist and he brought the mug to his mouth, but didn't drink. It was clearly too hot. "Sorry. For what I did." It was more of an apology to Myrnin, but he would still never willingly talk to that vampire, much less apologize to him. But it was worth giving an explanation. He continued, "I realized something..." The boy stared into the illuminated rug near the fire, and then into his drink, which was still swirling. "There are people who I think are like me... but they aren't." Assertive, but suggestively ominous.

L didn’t speak right away. He was watching the small marshmallows in his drink drift gently up against the sides of his mug, but every minute or so his eyes betrayed him by flicking up to Czeslaw’s face. Not that the boy seemed likely to make eye contact anyway. He, too, seemed suddenly fascinated by the decorative rug near the fire. The immortal boy might have just been tired, but L didn’t think so. At least, not the sort of tired you get when you don’t sleep. The detective recognized the anxietly behind Czes’ averted gaze and he nodded, silently offering to simply be there for a while, if he was wanted. “I’m not mad.” His voice was quiet, barely audible above the cheerful crackle of the fire. He glanced at Czeslaw, searching his expression. “I saw that man from your world, remember? Your reaction to someone like Myrnin was not just understandable, but expected. I would have been surprised if you’d been unbothered by him.” He paused, testing the words in his mouth before he continued in the same soft, serious tone. “But I mean what I said back there. I count Myrnin among the only friends I’ve ever had, both here and in my own world. I trust him completely.” He paused again. “I hoped that maybe I could be friends with both of you. If you don’t mind too much.” He took another sip, burning his mouth again, and went quiet.

Czes could have relaxed when L said he wasn't mad, but he didn't. He only brought his appendages closer. It was a mix of emotions that consisted of a small amount of guilt, and a larger amount of simple disbelief of the statement, something conditioned within him for a long time. He twitched at the mention of Claire. The comparison was frightening, and apparently unwelcome. Completely? How could anyone trust him completely? He understood the detective's sentiment, but was nearly too shocked to go on at that particular statement. He held back from retaliating though, even closing his eyes to restrain himself. He had made progress with Myrnin in his own time, thinking over the issue and ultimately deciding he wasn't as threatening as impressions so far had given him credit for. But still... "He and I could never be friends." The sentence flowed, but was void of emotion or even ambivalence. It was like acknowledging the snowy weather. He blew on his hot chocolate once more and then took a sip, but it was still too hot. He hardly winced, far too numb at this point to be bothered by such minor things. "As long as you understand that." His gaze finally found his way back to L, his expression wary but serious. It was one of those moments where his face and his language betrayed the age he appeared to be, something he only rarely let his guard down on even when alone with someone he knew.

Eleven blinked into the lodge. She didn't seem surprised that she was in the house. "You know....I'm not surprised anymore." She muttered sadly before looking around at the people in the supposed lodge. Deciding she didn't want to interact entirely she walked to a darker spot and stood there. She was much stronger having closed the portal. Now she was back in the place where she had been many times. Maybe Rue would be here. She had formed a somewhat sisterly bond with the girl and Rue was one of the only people she could really trust here.

L didn’t miss the twitch, or the look in Czeslaw’s eye, as he brought up the person he’d had the misfortune of meeting. Not that he’d needed any more proof that Claire was not a positive person in the small blinker’s life, but it did serve as a reminder of how deep that fear went. He couldn’t help wondering what it was Claire had done to deserve it, but he knew better than to ask. Especially now, when the poor kid was already feeling so vulnerable. Again, Czeslaw’s anxious, careful mannerisms reminded him forcefully of Wammy’s House, and he didn’t look away as the boy closed his eyes. What was he thinking about? Was he shocked, perhaps, that L could ever trust anyone? Or did he just not believe it, the way L himself had believed he could never trust anyone, when he’d been in the same position? He listened quietly, his eyes dropping to refocus on the gentle steam rising from his mug. The lack of emotion didn’t phase him, or even surprise him, because he understood it. How much easier it was to just turn that part of yourself off. You couldn’t feel completely happy like that, yes, but... But you were safe. And, sometimes, that was more than good enough. “I understand.” He answered softly, glancing back up and searching Czeslaw’s eyes. Then he smiled. “You never have to be friends with him, or even like him. That goes for anyone else I may be friends with.” He sipped at his drink again, then paused, his tongue burning it’s protest. “Oh, I forgot. That’s probably still too hot, isn’t it?” The sudden appearance of a new girl caught his eye and he looked up, head tilted inquisitively. Then he waved. “Oh look, someone else is here. Do you know her?”

Czeslaw averted his eyes again after he spoke, as if suddenly self conscious and fearful of being too earnest. He gave a dejected display, perhaps even revealing the childlike perspective within him that wished L had picked him instead of Myrnin--the perspective that said it was one or the other. 'Anyone else' did interest him slightly, and he began to wonder who else in the Paradox House L was friends with. He began to wonder if he truly knew the detective well enough to call him a friend; their relationship had begun only by him being the least aggressive presence in a room, the one he used impartially as a human shield of sorts. "No... it's not," the boy lied. He brought the hot chocolate back up to his mouth and took a sip again. It was scalding, but this time he didn't so much as suggest a wince. He hadn't done that in a while--reject pain, that is. Those were the things he was drawing away from now that he had a calmer life with Ennis, Firo, and Maiza in it. Eleven drew his attention when L acknowledged her, but he was more reserved than his fellow blinker and refrained from waving in greeting. "...I don't," he informed him, head low. She appeared to be his age, and just as much of a recluse. Hopefully that didn't mean he was about to meet someone like himself.

Touka hesitated, then stepped out after him, squinting as the snow started to settle on her hair and eyelashes. As the freezing air hit her face, she suddenly wished she had something other than her work uniform to wear. The winter in her world wasn’t, so far, terribly convincing, and even if it had been cold outside, she wouldn’t have had her coat on at work. She drew her arms more tightly up to her chest and shivered, but the discomfort was mostly forgotten as she spotted the view. There was a hill nearby, and it was so severe that you could see the snow-covered treetops stretching far into the distance. The lights from the lodge illuminated the snowfall, making it easy to see just how much of it was coming down. “It’s beautiful,” she said, eyes wide, then blushed a little, realizing she’d accidentally voiced her awe out loud. Having grown up in what basically amounted to a back alley in Tokyo, snow for her was usually brown, half-melted, and swept away by irritated neighbors long before it looked like this.

Rich blinked into the lodge, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a baseball cap that had “SHADY” printed on it in bright gold lettering. “Not that it isn’t a fair assessment, but still, rude,” he commented, before he noticed where he was. Then, he did notice, and his hands fell to his sides, exasperation creeping into both his expression and his tone. “God dammit. I had a whole two cups of coffee this time...what is this, narcolepsy?” Since the last time he’d blinked, he’d had a long few weeks to ponder what had happened. He’d gotten checked over by several doctors, and they’d come up with nothing, so he’d eventually concluded that it had been just a very strange, very vivid dream. But again?

Watching him, L could tell that the conversation hadn’t gone quite the way Czeslaw had wanted it to. He wasn’t sure whether it was because he was still Myrnin’s friend or something else, but he didn’t think there was anything he could do about it. He wanted to be friends with both of them, if Czes could learn to trust him again. He poked thoughtfully at a marshmallow, lost in thought as he watched it bounce gently. Then he grabbed it with the tips of his finger and dropped it in his mouth, chewed for a minute, and swallowed, his dark eyes moving to rest on Czeslaw’s. “I understand if you don’t quite trust me anymore.” He said finally. “I hope I can win that privilege back again someday. But trust isn’t something either of us give easily, I think, so it’s all right if it takes a while. I’m not going anywhere.” And he meant it. Maybe he was just being the person he’d needed when he was small and afraid, the person Watari and ended up being for him. Someone who was just just reliably there, whether you wanted them to be or not. It was true that he didn’t entirely understand Czeslaw’s circumstances, or why it was he was so afraid of other immortals, but he didn’t need to. He just wanted to help.
L blinked, his eyes widening as Czeslaw took a drink without flinching, and he glanced quickly down at his own drink. His tongue still felt oddly rough and numb, so he knew it was hot...but it wasn’t like he could do anything about it. Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything.

Czeslaw didn't look at L, but he was keenly aware of his movements, even the chewing of the marshmallow. His body didn't move at all, other than his eyes widening ever so slightly out of surprise at what L said. Why would he bother to do that... to wait? He wasn't going to leave him alone? His thought process came to a block then, where he couldn't quite understand the other blinker's decisions. He reminded him of someone in that moment: Maiza. It was definitely something Maiza would say. The boy found his shoulders had been raising and he brought them back down, lowering the mug full of hot chocolate with them. His few sips had actually made significant progress with the drink. He was still a kid, and still wanted plenty of sweets. "Thank you..." he answered quietly. He had almost forgot, but he was learning to use pleasantries like that more often. It usually gave people a better impression of him, he now noticed, and he somewhat comprehended why people did it. "Is yours too hot?" he was only teasing, but it did come off as quite snarky for such a shy kid. He managed a smirk and raised his mug to his lips again for a sip. It was all gone soon, and his way of saying thanks was to offer the cup back to L.

_________________________________________ ~Shilo Saga~ Location: Lodge Interactions: Combeferre Mentions: N/A Combeferre wanted to respond and say again that it didn't make any sense for a dimension like this to be able to pull people from every world while powering itself, and assuming it powered itself also didn't give any reason why it would pull people from other worlds, but he figured arguing about that wasn't likely to make him any friends. Besides, Shilo had been here longer, and that meant that she probably knew better. But he still disagreed fundamentally on the nature of a dimension like this, even though the science didn't exist in any capacity to prove either of their theories. Maybe one day they'd meet someone from far enough into the future that they'd have an answer. That dimensional power was as well known as... well, algebra, or gravity. Not that he really understood algebra, or that he had more than a basic understanding of why gravity worked, but the big concepts interested him. "How do you know if a room is safe or not?" If they had ways to tell, why didn't people only go into the safe rooms and leave the dangerous ones alone. "Also I'm not sure I'd wanna get stuck in a dangerous one, especially without adults to help get out. They tend to be able to figure out a lot of things that don't make sense, and if there's a dangerous room..." he shrugged. He knew a lot of adults and he had a feeling most of them would be pretty incompetent here, but he could imagine his parents being willing to protect him and Shilo if they got into danger. He shook her hand carefully but firmly, smiling slightly. "I'm from Brest."
