Rue stepped into the hall, breathing out and trying to breathe. She liked people, but she didn’t really want to be stuck in a room with a lot of strangers at the moment, especially when she was feeling so vulnerable in her own world. She looked up suddenly as she realized she wasn’t alone. There was another girl there, too, the nervous goorl with the eyepatch. Rue hesitated, sensing that the other kid was overwhelmed, too. Should she leave? Or come forward? She walked hesitantly forward, until she was near the other girl but still a respectful distance away. “Hello.” She said very softly, her tone hesitant. “Um...are you okay?”

"Who do you think you are that you can tell me what to do?" Zuko snapped, glaring at Riddle. He may have been banished, but he was still owed respect. He was still a prince. Right? He was aware that people were edging away from him. Mostly people his own age or younger, which felt... bad. He didn't like that. He didn't want the people his age to be afraid of him... if the adults were afraid, it was fine. They worked for him and they condescended to him, and the only way to hold onto any control was for them to be afraid. Or at least kept in line. He forced his hands to relax, instead looking between all of the people there. His hand found the bandage over his eyes, and he grimaced, turning away to look at the hallway. He didn't know where he was and he wanted to go home. More than anything he wanted to go home, to his Mom and to the Fire Nation, even to Azula and his father.

Mei | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® |"Yes," said Mei, not taking her eyes off her ribbon as she heard the other girl speak. She seemed nice - she wasn't yelling, and although she'd come up to talk to her, she wasn't yelling or getting in her face, which she appreciated. "You don't like it, either? How noisy they are?" she asked, still not moving to actually look at the girl.

Riddle Rosehearts | Living Room | Zuko Riddle frowned at Zuko. "I am simply giving you advice. Rude behavior is unsightly regardless of the situation." He placed his hands on his hips, yet his stern expression softened somewhat when he noticed the bandage over the prince's eye. "Did you injure yourself?" He questioned, concerned. "That's no good. I'm afraid I don't know any healing magic, but if I had the right ingredients, I could brew a potion..."

Rue hesitated for another few seconds, than sat down opposite the girl, her back pressed against the wall and her wide eyes focused on the other blinker. “No.” She agreed softly. “I don’t like yelling.” She hesitated again, unsure what else to say. “I’m Rue.” She said finally. “What’s your name?”

Mabel was taken by surprise when the dog-robot - no, wolf - began to speak. "You can talk!?" she exclaimed excitedly. She'd met interesting people here on her last few visits, including a couple who had magical powers. But this was something else. A talking, robot wolf - it really was like in the movies! "Are you owned by a mad scientist?" she inquired. She noticed there was no collar around her neck, but she was still curious nonetheless. After all, she'd never met a mad scientist. Possibly this one forgot to put the collar on their pet, or maybe she'd shrugged it off herself. The girl briefly let her gaze wander towards the red-haired boy, who was now talking to the angry kid. She didn't take in much of what they were saying, however, as the talking wolf was much more exciting. Hopefully they're alright, she thought to herself. Their conversation appeared to be tense, and she hoped a fight wouldn't break out. She shuddered at the memory of her last room, in which she'd almost been cooked by a blinker with fire powers.

Atreus | Living Room | Ver Million Cloverleaf grey and a lil striderAtreus frowned as the teen critiqued his knowledge on how to handle a bow with others around, creasing his brow a bit as he considered the older boy. “I think I know how to avoid shooting people I don’t want to,” he pointed out in a loud mutter. Before much could expand from the comment, the red-head had moved on to criticizing another blinker in the room. Giving that the individual Riddle was starting a fuss with was, in fact, being very loud - Atreus backed away from the conversation quickly as the bandaged fire-bender rounded on the the pair of them. Seeing Victoria approaching, Tre scooted off to the side to meet her with a quick pat to the head. “Hey Victoria,” he said politely, as he would with most animals, though he was a bit excited knowing that atmosphere with this wolf would be more positive than any other he’d ever encountered. He allowed Victoria to speak up for herself as Mable approached, smiling a bit as he watched the girls energetic reaction. After a moment, he leaned in towards the stranger with a closer eye, patiently waiting for a pause in the discussion before interjecting. “You look...super familiar.”

Riddle Rosehearts | Living Room | Zuko "What's this? You aren't aware of magic?" Riddle tilted his head, baffled. Perhaps this stranger came from a remote village or kingdom without anyone that knew magic? No, that couldn't be possible, right? He folded his arms over his chest, listening to the prince carefully. "Not even healers can help? How strange..." He murmured. The only person he knew that could potentially help was her. The thought of contacting her made him cringe, but it was the only way. "I...I could try to ask my...mother." Riddle's expression darkened for a moment when he mentioned her, but he continued. "She's a famous and skilled healer. I'm sure someone like her could figure something out."

"Unless you call bending magic, then no. Magic doesn't exist except in kid's stories, and even then it's not really magic so much as weird avatar-powers that nobody understands." Zuko crossed his arms, not quite understanding what the teen was going on about. Bending wasn't magic, it just... was. It was a skill just like anything else, and one that Zuko needed to get a lot better at if he was ever going to be able to capture the avatar. Zuko frowned a little bit at Riddle, then his expression softened a bit as things seemed to fall into place. "So... you're from the water tribe?" he asked after a moment. The best healers were water benders, even he knew that. So if Riddle's mother was a skilled healer, he had to be water tribe. Unless it was different in the Spirit Realm...

Bending? Magic not existing? What was he talking about? Magic is such an integral part of society! How could he not know it exists? Bending couldn't be another word for magic...was he talking about science? "This is strange..." He mumbled to himself, "I have never heard of 'bending'. Unless you mean something along the lines of bending a stick." His confusion simply grew when Zuko mentioned something about a 'water tribe'. He shook his head.
"'Water Tribe'? Is that a village from the Land of Pyroxene?" He questioned. To his knowledge, the Land of Pyroxene was one of the larger and more diverse countries. Maybe this 'Water Tribe' belonged there? Unless he was referring to the Coral Sea, but he wasn't a merman like those treacherous twins or Azul.
"I'm from the Rose Kingdom. Surely you have heard of it?"

Riddle Rosehearts | Living Room | Zuko "Fire Nation? Spirit Realm?" Riddle echoed slowly at the unfamiliar phrases. Could it be...he needed to polish his geography again?! He held back a defeated sigh. Not knowing all the countries and kingdoms in Twisted Wonderland would be damaging to his status as the Heartslabyul prefect! In reality, nobody would care, sorry Riddle. The redhead was ready to scold the prince for his tone, but an enlightened gleam appeared in his eyes when a flame manifested in the palm of his hand. "That is magic. Well, elemental magic to be exact," He commented and bobbed his head, "but I'm surprised that you don't need a magic gemstone to cast magic."

It seemed that Victoria didn't quite understand what Mabel was talking about, as she'd interpreted 'mad' to mean angry and not mad as in crazy. "Not angry mad, crazy mad," the girl spoke. She crossed her eyes, stuck her tongue out, and waved her arms around erratically to demonstrate. She figured he probably was was something close to what she was picturing, as "The Inventor" sounded like a perfect name for a mad scientist. "Who is this inventor guy?" she inquired out of curiosity. "Does he have wild hair? Big goggles? Nerd tools?" Mabel's attention was momentarily diverted as the boy with the bow and arrow approached her and the talking wolf. Familiar? she didn't know what he found familiar about her, as she had never seen him before. Had they met in a previous House journey, and she'd forgotten? She was sure she hadn't seen anyone quite like him in her other visits, but maybe he'd seen her in another place and she simply hadn't noticed. "Do you know a Mabel? That's me!" she said, pointing at herself.

Mei/Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® |"Mei," she said, finally turning her head to look at Rue. "Misaki Mei." And with that, she blinked out, and was immediately replaced by another girl, of a similar height, with black, poofy hair and clouded eyes that were staring, unfocused, out in front of her. She jumped as the floor under her feet changed and flung her arms out behind her, slamming them against the door. Every time this happened it was exactly as disorienting as the last - she hated the feeling of everything suddenly shifting and changing around her. Even the air smelled different here. "Okay," she said tiredly, pulling out her knife and pointing it out in front of her. "If anyone's here, you better say something, or I'm gonna have to stab you for sneaking up on me."

Rue blinked and jumped to her feet as the first girl vanished, her heart speeding up. She was used to it, but she also knew that meant someone else was likely to appear in her place, and they weren’t guaranteed to be safe or friendly. Sure enough, another girl blinked in moments later. Rue didn’t speak immediately. She wasn’t sure what to say, or whether the newcomer wanted to be addressed at all. She considered fleeing into a room, but before she could, the stranger was armed and pointing the knife right at her. “Um!” She said, backing away quickly. “It’s okay, you’re in the Paradox House, but it isn’t a room so your safe. You don’t have to stab anyone.”

Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® |Sol considered the new voice for a second, then decided to reward them for showing her where they were by putting away the knife. With that stowed, she stuck her hands in her pockets and leaned against the wall, head still tilted in Rue's general direction. "Don't sneak up on me," she warned. "Or run at me real quick. I can't see you, so those things mean you wanna get stabbed. Anyway, you have a name or anything?"

Rue let out a breath as the knife was put away. She didn’t really want to get skewered today, and there was chance enough for that on all sides as it was. No, she wanted to stay far away from violence in general. “”No problem. I don’t like being snuck up on, either.” She said, leaning back against the wall again now that the threat seemed to have passed for the most part. She eyed the other girl, hesitating a moment before responding. “Yeah. I’m Rue....what’s your name?” Having a new friend wouldn’t be so bad, right? Rue knew she had precious few as it was, and since she didn’t plan on dying, it was okay to start friendships, right? Oh, she knew the chances of actually living. She had had them drilled into her brain over and over again as she trained, Do you know the chances of surviving this, a Rue? but she didn’t care about chances. She and Katniss had a plan, and it was a good plan, and as long as she could get to the next fire, it would be okay. She would be okay.

Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® |"Rue," repeated Sol, rolling the name around on her tongue for a moment to commit it to memory and match it in her mind to the voice she was hearing. "That's cool. It's like a weird name, cause not a lot of people have it." She took out her knife again and wiped it on her sleeve, then ran her thumb up and down the blade as she continued talking. "I'm Solaris, but I like Sol. And ok so this can be kinda awkward, but what do you want me to call you? Like, I'm 'she'," she clarified, hunching her shoulders as if she were shielding herself from the question's awkwardness.

“Oh, it’s not too uncommon where I’m from.” Rue watched the other girl take out the knife, her wide, dark eyes careful. It wasn’t that she didn’t like her - she did, actually - but past experience said a kid with a knife was rarely a good thing. Still, she also couldn’t begrudge anyone the desire to carry a weapon. She, herself, was armed at the moment, and she hadn’t exactly mentioned that yet. Not that she thought the other blinker was likely to mind as long as she didn’t attack. “Nice to meet you, Sol.” She said, smiling a little. Being in the hallway meant she didn’t have to watch her back quite as much, but she found herself doing it anyway. After all, the House was not the only thing she had to worry about. She was caught off guard by the next question, and she frowned, then realized what Sol meant. “Oh.” She said, surprised. “I’m ‘she’, too. That’s cool of you to ask, no one ever does.”

Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® |Sol shrugged. "It's not cool of me, it's rude of them," she said simply. Rue was right - she wouldn't have minded that she was armed - in fact, she tended to assume everyone was, although that was a product of her environment. It would've surprised her more to find that the other girl wasn't armed. She tilted her head to indicate one of the doors. "Do you know these rooms?" she asked, curious. "Like, have you been in any of them?" She suspected this was a hotel, and hotels meant floors and floors of rooms full of infected, most of them probably locked in. Usually if she realized she was in a hotel, she didn't bother staying. She didn't seem to have a choice about it right now, though.

Rue gave a light laugh, because it was so true and yet she never really thought of It that way before. “Yeah, you’re right.” She agreed. “Where I’m from isn’t really nice to some people though, so I don’t expect it very often. But you’re right, it’s rude not to ask.” She felt her tiny knife in her pocket, carefully making sure it was still there. She hoped she wouldn’t need it, but she didn’t believe in not being prepared. Even Katniss was unaware of her weapon. It was something she felt bad about, but she knew it was necessary. Even if it didn’t do much good when she fell asleep curled up next to the other tribute, it made herself feel better. “Yeah.” She said, nodding even though she knew Sol couldn’t see her. “There are a lot of different things in them - you can never guess what - and they are really dangerous sometimes, so it’s never a good idea to go in them alone.” Since when could she make the House speech? Now, apparently. She hadn’t even intended to do it, it had just kind of slipped out. “It’s really weird, I know.” She added, in case Sol really was as new as she seemed to be. “I can try to answer any of your questions.”

Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® | “Yeah, that’s really weird,” agreed Sol, deadpan. “I mean, when I first came here or whatever, I was like ‘who would believe that that’s stupid’, but like...something weird’s obviously going on because suddenly I’m not where I was, and my dogs are gone, and then I’m back again. That doesn’t just happen.” She shook her head. “Okay, a question. Where *are* you from?”

Rue could relate to that, having not believed a word of it when she had first come to the House. She hadn’t really understood then what she did now. She hadn’t realized how lucky she was. “Yeah.” She agreed. “I mean, when I first came here, I thought that I had been kidnapped or something.” She hesitated as the conversation turned on her, and looked away, the feeling of terror she had been trying so hard to suppress. But she wanted to be friends with this girl if she could, and she knew she needed to be honest if that could happen. “I guess that depends what you mean.” She said softly. “I’m from District 11, but that probably doesn’t mean anything to you, so...I guess I’m from earth? I don’t know if that means anything more to you.” She hesitated, frowning. “It’s not a nice place.” She said finally. “But I guess it’s home. Where are you from?”

Sol | Hallway | ®Hawkpath® | Sol snorted. “Earth, wow. Rue snorted. Yep, Sol was new all right. She still assumed everyone was from the same planet. “You might be surprised.” She said, and she couldn’t help smiling a little mischievously. “Wait til you actually meet someone from the moon.” As Sol continued, her face turned a bit more serious. “Quarantine?” She repeated, and shook her head. “No, sorry, I don’t know what that means. You’re really new here, aren’t you?l She hesitated, then continued. “District 11 is a section of Panem, my home.” She explained. “I’m from a different world than you are. I know that sounds really weird and hard to believe, but it’s true. You already noticed that you’re surroundings keep suddenly changing, right? It’s called ‘blinking’. You aren’t in your world anymore.”

Victoria tilted her head, taking in Mabel's impression before shaking her head. "No, I don't think so. Maybe just a little lonely."
"He's the dude who fixes me up all the time! He invents stuff, like this." The mechanical wolf lifted up one of her back legs, the gears whirring as they moved. Surprisingly, the rusty metal disks didn't clank as loudly as they usually did. She must have been home recently for repairs. "Nah, his hair's long, but it's neat. No goggles, and yeah, lotsa tools."
She looked around, taking in the various conversations; folks seemed to have paired up. She danced in place, looking to the hallway. Maybe once people all said hello and everything, she could convince someone to go work the doorknobs for her.
