Well that depends with the image you try to set on the clan. Mystery? Hope? Tension? Fear? Wonder? Peace? Any of these could be reflected in the backstory.

Then those elements should be present in the backstory of the clan. Maybe it starts off with a discontented, slightly violent-prone cat who wanders into the caves?

Yes! And there's that layer of mystery underneath....with such dark, endless, unoccupied caverns. Or so he thinks...until perhaps he runs into a bear or something so he can claim the caves? Then is rewarded by being guided to the Ancestor's Pool (I'm not looking at the proper names right now, don't blame me) and being asked to form a clan?
