Tamino's sure doing a good job as the hero, isn't he? For a good majority of time he's actually helping both major villains more than he is defeating them smh

Honestly, my favorite thing about my Tamino is how much he fails. He isn't the noble prince of then; he's the arrogant and short-tempered confused housecat. He disappoints people (including both of his parents), he gets too upset over small things, he sometimes makes situations worse- it makes me like him because he isn't perfect. Opera Tamino did everything. Ensemble Tamino tries but fails, but gets up and keeps going. Opera Tamino sucks (donkey).

Your Tamino is realistic and has flaws; on top of that, he causes misery a lot, lol. Yeah, by this point he still can't wrap his head around magic and being an opera cat and not just a regular housecat. And he isn't very nice about it either, given how he treats Papageno and Leporello. It gets even more confusing when 1) Everyone knows who he is, or at the very least recognizes his "new" name supposedly given to him by the Queen, but they never tell him either for his own safety or because they can't for some reason, 2) Everyone tells him he's far too much like his mother and that he should stop because she supposedly died stubbornly taking on more than she could handle, and 3) Sarastro and the Queen are much more than they both seem, and most cats don't even know Sarastro's still alive...

Yeah, Tamino telling Papageno to throw himself in the river (and many other insults) might not exactly turn out to be a good idea... Tamino's mother isn't what she seems either, of course, and what her death seemed to be was not really what happened at all. The Queen is an opportunist. She knows who exactly Tamino is, right from the moment she heard he was a Bengal with golden fur like the sun. And his actual identity is exactly why she chose him despite his inability to face down a snake. And it's not even because Tamino's good at anything: his identity is her greatest weapon.

The whole thing where he constantly insults Papageno gets even worse when we get to Papageno's backstory, and it turns out he has some form of depression... He and pretty much everyone else are simply pawns in the political war of the Queen and Sarastro as they twist and turn around one another in a fued that has lasted since the Queen upset Sarastro's throne, became leader, and then proceeded to rewrite all of the government. They have solely dedicated themselves to this and nothing more (although Sarastro has a more bleak view on the whole thing)- and have now both lost their spouse and children to the other in some way.

That's exactly what Tamino does best, given he's now literally approaching Hell without flinching. I mean, they've pretty much ruined everything- Sarastro's wife died in battle due to a snake bite, the Queen's husband committed suicide because of the guilt on his shoulders from war, Sarastro's kittens were drowned in the Buckingham Fountain (?), and Pamina's just been kidnapped by Sarastro. It's rather disturbing the lengths they'll go to kill one another, especially given that in childhood and early adulthood they were each other's best friend and confidant...

If I had a nickel every time Tamino almost died, I'd become rich lmao The 'drowned in the fountain(?)' thing gets worse when it turns out this was done the old fashioned way- stuffing the kittens in a sack and throwing them in. And they weren't even more than two months old at the time... Yeah, their conflict is basically at the heart of the entire comic- the sky is falling, indeed...

I really should add the "Leporello Refusing To Talk About Don Giovanni's Death" and "Tamino Almost Dying" counters to the Papageno Lie Counter I already have running in the annotations lmao It really is- escpecially given nobody's quite sure what happened to them afterwards and if they managed to survive or not (and how horrible their deaths were) as far as we can see. Over the course of Ensemble, their violent tension will only continue to rise, especially over Pamina being kidnapped and Tamino butting in... Poor Pamina gets some of the worst of everything in Ensemble. The poor molly gets thrown to Hell and back multiple times because of everything around her (and on occasion her own actions). Then again so is everyone else, although some go through more than others.

It most definitely will, especially given how much it contrasts their original characters from the opera. Nobody gets an escape from the madness. Even Papageno, who was originally nothing more than the comic relief sidekick, ends up getting one of the worst cases of all...

Papageno and Leporello are about on the same level of treatment, although comparing their predicaments are like comparing apples and oranges. Although they both suffer from loneliness and Love Angst(TM) to some extent, I will say, and neither of them have a very good outlook on themselves. Although Papageno is a lot more optimistic- or at the least, he's convincing himself he is- than Leporello, who's a complete and utter cynic.

Papageno in Ensemble... he's a case, I'll say. He's always optimistic and hopeful, at first anyway, but then it turns out that some of the time his optimism is just him trying to convince himself everything will turn out fine, and from there he slowly begins to lose the hope he once held so dear, especially as his depression begins to hit him hard as the plot progresses. He's also basically alone 95% of the time, and the other 5% of the time he's spending with the Three Ladies (unfortunately), so he's desperate for some kind of company- especially a lover. He used to have one, but they had an argument, she left, and a few hours after he discovered what he decided were her remains- making the last conversation she had with him as far as he knows an argument, which is something that haunts him to this very day. His greatest fear of all, despite being a coward, is his own loneliness, and his greatest wish of all is to have someone that at the very least understands him despite his issues with depression and his bizarre quirks- something that has seemed virtually impossible, as the one cat that did understand him and loved him is dead- violently killed, it seems- as far as he knows.

There's also the fact he's being dragged into the whole Queen-Sarastro thing without wanting to be, and that neither side seems to be content that he isn't some kind of righteous hero but just a decent guy that just wants to be loved. So over the course of the story, both sides slowly make it worse and worse for him...

@ - Literally, he is ordered to follow the clueless Tamino around as extra food XD And then warned about being punished if he doesn't do it. I don't know how Sarastro would treat him, but I imagine that's why he doesn't see the queen as anything special—she treats him no better than a supposed villain
you know you're in trouble when your only purpose is to be food if the cat you're traveling with needs to go cannibal to live Sarastro won't take kindly to Papageno's whole "um fighting over politics isn't really my thing" outlook, that's all I'm sayin. He'll never catch a break lmao @ - Yeah, you're basically nothing but an insect to be stepped on Sarastro must be intense, oml. Poor Papageno XD
