Owlfrost turned his head to look back at her, bright yellow eyes studying her for a moment, “Does it really matter why I decided to bother you?” He asked, still not entirely sure himself why he was there talking to her. “Maybe I just got used to seeing you sulking over here, so seeing you actually playing with a butterfly took me by surprise.” He added in a light teasing tone. “Considering nobody else does, I’m not all that crazy to inquire about it.” Mothsong muttered, before she stared at Owlfrost for a moment, not used to the teasing tone in his voice. Nobody had teased her or talked with her like that in a long time, and even then, it being Owlfrost of all cats confused her deeply. Even so, she shifted a bit, trying to sound conversational, at least. After all, it wasn’t like she disliked just having anyone to talk to. “What, you think I’ve never chased a butterfly before? Hmph. You’d think I’ve got the heart of a rock and the brain of a bee, huh? I would have caught it too had you not scared it off.” She blamed, though there was no harshness in her voice, more so an awkward kind of snark.

(Boop. I just realized that since we added the rule about codebreaking/demoted medicine cats losing their connection to StarClan, it also applies to Slatesight and I never acknowledged it ) Slatesight curled up under the shade of a tree and rested his head on his paws. His eyes focused on a random spot in camp, thinking deeply about something. The former medicine cat knew something had felt different for a while, and he was afraid that he was close to the answer.

Hornetstrike had noticed Slatesight resting under the shade of his favorite tree, and he couldn’t help but notice how his friend seemed distracted by something. Padding up to him, Hornetstrike tipped his head. “You seem pretty focused on something. Did a snake get through the camp wall?” He teased, though it was clear he was concerned for Slatesight.

Slatesight was brought out of his focus by his friend's voice, raising his head to look at him. "Hello, Hornetstrike. I'm afraid I don't see any snakes." He went quiet for a moment, deliberating on what he could comfortably say to him. "But I think I've come to a realization about something."

Hornetstrike asked curiously, moving to sit down near Slatesight's side. He looked at him with a look of worry. "Is it something bad? I can cover for you, if you need me to!" He promised, hoping that Slatesight hadn't gotten into any trouble.

Slatesight shook his head and moved to get to his paws. "No, it's nothing like that. But I think this is something that shouldn't be overheard. Do you have time to take a walk?" he asked, lowering his voice. "I don't want to risk anything."

He always enjoyed spending time with his best friend, since they had been kits together way back when. What could be so risky to speak of, though? The Clan was already well aware of his relationship with Mapleleaf, he’d already stepped down because of it. Hornetstrike felt a flicker of worry.

It had finally started to regrow after the horrible fire, and while most of it looked the same as it always did, Slatesight could tell that it had lost some sort of luster. Perhaps it was because of what happened, or maybe it was just his mind playing tricks on him. "All right. I'm not sure if this is something I should be telling any cat, or if it has happened to anyone else... but I feel I have lost my connection with StarClan."

Hornetstrike seemed a bit surprised at the admission. “Lost your connection? Like… you can’t see any more signs, or dreams?” He looked troubled, before a realization dawned on him. “Hm. Maybe you stepping down has made it so you can’t see what you used to see when you were a Medicine Cat. Like, any other Warrior.” He offered, though he wilted with sympathy. “I’m sorry though. It must be difficult for you.”

Slatesight went on the explain. "As a medicine cat, I could feel StarClan's presence," he mewed, continuing to walk through the forest. "It was how I thought I was making the right choices and following their will. I believe every medicine cat feels the same way. But after I stepped down, the feelings of their presence faded..." he muttered, a bitter tinge to his voice. "I certainly haven't had any visions or dreams since, either. Even though I was happy to be with my family, I still feel like a part of me has been lost." He turned to look at his best friend. "Perhaps that is what happened. I appreciate your support, as always."

To have such a powerful connection, Hornetstrike was both wowed and just a slight bit envious. Though, with how much it was weighing on Slatesight now, to have lost that apparently, Hornetstrike could only feel sympathy for him. He pressed close to Slatesight's side. "I'm only sorry that you've had to hold in that admission so long. All this time, I hadn't known how serious it had been to lose that. It must be what happened... and I'll always support you. Always." He promised.

Scarletpaw scowled as she watched the training sessions. Her spar had come and gone, and even in her tired state, she found herself holding her own well. Surely, Southmist would at least be content with that. Now, she was irritable because Dawnpaw seemed to be rather excited for his spar with Hollowpaw. Why did he have to get paired with her? Scarletpaw would have much rather sparred with Hollowpaw, and now once more, Dawnpaw was getting to do everything that Scarletpaw couldn't.
Yarrowcloud watched the sessions with a leisurely smile, nodding every few moments at each of the apprentices and their feats. Now that the hunting group was back, the individual spars were always the most exciting for the elder to watch. He remembered his own spars with Eagleclaw and Emberfluff back in the day, back when he was the oldest apprentice in the den, alone but content knowing that Peachdapple was getting used to her new rank as a medicine cat apprentice, rather than as a Warrior at his side. He glanced his good eye at Lightningstar, wondering if his mentor remembered those spars.
Dawnpaw glanced at Hollowpaw, voice steady and kind as he admitted. "I'm excited to see what you've got. Promise me that you won't go easy on me!" He offered, humored but honest. He greatly respected his younger Clanmate, and was always up for socializing with as many cats as he could.

Hollowpaw turned her head when Dawnpaw spoke and gave him a light smile. “So long as you promise to not go easy on me too.” She said. Maybe Dawnpaw wasn’t as bad as Scarletpaw made him out to be after all.
Ghostscreech watched as the apprentices trained, glad to see that they were all progressing nicely. “Alright, time for the last individual spar. Dawnpaw, Hollowpaw. It’s your turn.” He said, motioning for them to take their places in the center of the Sandy Hollow.

He turned his head to look at Ghostscreech as the deputy announced for their spar to start. He grew serious as he nodded. He padded towards the center of the hollow, calling to Hollowpaw. "I'm ready if you are." Scarletpaw frowned as she noticed Hollowpaw's seemingly casual talking with her brother. She scoffed quietly to herself, trying to tell herself that she wasn't jealous. Rather, she tried to only focus on Hollowpaw, hoping she would win just to prove everyone she could do it. Frostmoon watched Ghostscreech for a moment, inwardly admiring his ability to take control over any situation with ease, though she quickly focused back on the apprentices. That was what mattered right now, not her complicated feelings for the deputy. "What a treat." Yarrowcloud purred warmly, remembering how Hollowpaw had survived those freezing days after being thrown out of camp by Shadeclaw. Ever since, Yarrowcloud had watched her progress, and had hoped she could find her way and build herself up no matter her blindness. It was truly amazing, how much that once shaking kit was now a determined apprentice. He had happily watched Drizzlepaw and Flurrypaw's sessions as well, immense pride and love for them welling from him. In this moment, he felt a sense of peace and hope for Thunderclan.

Hollowpaw gave a sharp nod to Dawnpaw, dropping into a steady attack crouch. “I’m ready.” She said, scenting the air to find his exact location. She took a few cautious steps, circling around around the older apprentice before she lunged and aimed a swipe at his shoulder.
Sunthroat looked around at the apprentices that had been assigned to the hunting group and gave a nod, glad to see that all of them had caught at least one or two pieces of prey. He gave the sky a glance before standing up and addressing everyon, “Alright, it’s just about time for us to switch out. Let’s start heading back to the Sandy Hollow. We’ll gather all of your prey once you finish the battle part of your training.” He said, giving a flick of his tail as he turned to head back to the others.

Dawnpaw was already impressed by Hollowpaw’s speed, though he quickly opted to let her get the hit in so he could remain close enough to her to strike back quickly. He stiffened up to brunt the blow before he swung back, his paw curving to strike at her leg once he felt her paw connect with his body. He attempted to yank her off balance. “Thank Starclan! I thought we’d be hunting forever!” Flurrypaw exclaimed, though it was clear that he was in a bright mood over his catches. He scampered up to Sunthroat once he picked up his bird and mouse. Drizzlepaw held her catches quietly, trying to avoid eye-contact with any of the Warriors in her shyness.

Hollowpaw stumbled a bit when Dawnpaw's blow landed and quickly tried to get her balance back and taking a few pawsteps back. She flicked her ear as she listened for movement from Dawnpaw, keeping her face turned towards him. She knew where he was, she just needed to figure out a way to land a solid hit on him and try to find a weak spot she could exploit. Lunging quickly, Hollowpaw dove under Dawnpaw's belly and twisted, using her back paws to kick out at his stomach.

Lunging quickly, Hollowpaw dove under Dawnpaw's belly and twisted, using her back paws to kick out at his stomach. Dawnpaw was surprised by the move Hollowpaw used, not expecting her to use that move so early on. Well, Silentflare certainly must have been teaching her well! He huffed out a breath as one of her kicks pummeled his belly before he could quickly roll to the side and away from her. He recalled Sunthroat’s teachings, ducking low and sweeping his paws sharply to the side, aiming right at her legs. Scarletpaw grinned at Hollowpaw’s quick moves, Dawnpaw certainly hadn’t been expecting that! Yet… she wondered just how Hollowpaw did that, if Silentflare wasn’t being all that dutiful. She had to have taught herself that, right? Yarrowcloud watched the spar with interest, impressed with both Hollowpaw and Dawnpaw’s skills. He felt a hint of pride at how well Silentflare must have been teaching his apprentice. Teaching a blind cat to battle was no easy feat, but Hollowpaw seemed to be holding her own well, especially against an apprentice of Sunthroat.

Things like that, that you’ve known for so long, losing it has got to be hard.” Hornetstrike nodded. He was quiet for a moment, before he admitted. “You know, for a little bit, I was envious of how much Aspenfall wanted to be in the Medicine den when I trained him. After Shadeclaw, I… suppose I felt like I had failed another cat. But, I don’t think you realize just how much he is like you, in all the great ways that make you you.” Hornetstrike smiled softly, looking at his friend with a deep sense of care. “Maybe, you can still feel that connection, but through the eyes of your kit.”

Slatesight's eyes darkened at the mention of Shadeclaw. The damage he had done to ThunderClan reminded him all too well of Cloud, and what Nighteye had to do to save him. He hated when the Clan got overly violent. "Do not blame yourself for Aspenfall or Shadeclaw. Shadeclaw's actions led to his own downfall, and I believe StarClan had my son's path laid out in destiny. Perhaps we really are connected in that way." he mused.

I miss who Shadeclaw used to be, that dedicated apprentice that seemed to want nothing more than to be the best he could be for Thunderclan. I wish I had seen it coming. I wish I had just been able to see it before he became what he did.” Hornetstrike admitted, finally getting the words off his chest after so long. He shook his head softly. “What I do know is that you and Aspenfall were both meant for great things. I’m proud of that, of both of you. And, besides, if the Clan needs you to step in to help heal, then we’re all the better for it.”

"There may be a lot more to what you think. If we all knew what came ahead, would we still choose to make the same choices? If... if I had known I would choose family over my position as a medicine cat, would I have even expressed interest as a kit?" Slatesight wondered, feeling sympathetic for Hornetstrike and understanding how he felt. "Peachdapple was hurt by my choices, and so were Lightningstar and Magpiewing. I could have avoided that suffering and lived as a warrior had I known." he spoke. "However, I may not have became friends with you, or helped the Clan in the way that I know best. Sometimes the unpredictability of each day works in our favor, too. Perhaps StarClan maintains a careful balance."
