“Oh! Uhm…” Flurrypaw hesitated for a moment to think before he perked up and offered. “I could try and bite its tail or bite it in general, until I can get my other paw back on it?” Blizzardstorm grunted in agreement, "Right, prey is never going to stay perfectly still for you. Even if you have a perfect leap, you may still miss your mark if your target notices you or simply walks away from bad luck. The second you feel your prey underneath a paw, dig your claws in and don't let go then bite down on it."

"First, you should be looking for traces of a mouse scent. Typically, mice will burrow for most of leafbare, but may come out to gather food. That is when you'll be able to scent them. If we can catch the scent trail, then usually they'll lead right to their burrows. If the scent disappears suddenly suddenly after tracking, then you've likely gotten very close to the burrow." Hornetstrike explained. Lightningpaw absorbed most of the information rather quickly, and began to sniff the ground. After quite a bit of trial and error, Lightningpaw's ears shot up. "I think I've got a scent trail!" He whispered, his mind consumed with focus. He carefully followed the scent which, like Hornetstrike had said, led him right to the burrow. "Good. See? Not so hard. Now comes the harder part. Controlling the weight of your pawsteps. Mice can feel vibrations in the ground, and will flee before you can even get close. The trick is to make yourself as quiet as possible to make you unnoticeable above ground." Hornetstrike explained, moving into a crouch and slowly gliding his paws into a slow but soft gate. "It's important to be patient. The hollow won't go anywhere, so approach it slowly and quietly."

Flurrypaw nodded seriously, wanting to get down each piece of information Blizzardstorm gave him. He looked at the stone beneath his paw and admitted. "It's like catching mama's tail, but this time we do bite down and don't get a cuff on the ear for it." He teased.

He said, beginning to shift his weight off of his paws. He had always struggled with patience, though he was grateful for the opportunity to work on this flaw. He put his weight on his haunches and crouched, following his mentor's lead. He approached the hollow slowly, making sure to be as quiet as possible. He held his breath and inched closer and closer.

Hornetstrike watched silently, approval in his yellow eyes as he watched Lightningpaw adapt to the technique. He could tell the younger tom was willing to work hard to improve on the skills he was not so strong in, and Hornetstrike could already tell he was prime with potential as a future Warrior. Finally, the white and black tom mewed quietly. "Almost there. When you reach the hollow, I want you to decide if the scent is fresh or a bit old. If it's fresh, lunge your paw in and hook tightly and pull out what you can. If the mouse darts, be prepared to catch it with your teeth."

Blizzardstorm laughed, the tom quite used to the feeling of tiny needle teeth and claws in his tail with his three kits. "If your prey tries to cuff your ears I think we have a problem. Do you want to see if we can find some real prey?"

"Yes! I'm ready to test it out! Watch, I'll catch something good." Flurrypaw exclaimed, excitement in his eyes at the prospect of showing his new skills off for his mentor.

Blizzardstorm got to his paws and padded out of the sandy hollow. He scented the air and headed in the general direction of the trail of a mouse, "Do your best but don't be disappointed if we don't find anything Flurrypaw. It's leafbare after all."

"If I do my best, then we'll have to get something!" Flurrypaw assured, determination in his voice, though his youthful optimism certainly skewed his thoughts on his own abilities. Even so, he promised. "If I don't, then I'll just have to catch extra when I go on a patrol to Twolegplace, right?"

Blizzardstorm chuckled, the apprentice's enthusiasm rubbing off on him. "Sure Flurrypaw, I'm hoping the twolegplace will be crawling with prey anyway." Once they had gotten far enough away from the sandy hollow, he nodded to Flurrypaw. "Tell me what you scent and which one is most likely to still be hanging around."

Flurrypaw lowered his muzzle to the ground, taking in a deep breath before he huffed lightly. “Well, I can smell a vole, but it’s stale. It probably ran off a long while ago.” He continued to scent, ignoring the smell of other clanmates before he perked up. “Oh! I think that’s a bird!” He had yet to catch a bird, so he was hopeful at the prospect.

Blizzardstorm who had been tasting the air beside him, hummed in approval. "Show me with your tail which direction you think the scent is coming from and then you can go try and catch it. I will follow behind you silently. I don't want to be the reason you lose your catch."

“You can count on me!” Flurrypaw reported, before turning quickly to focus back on the scent trail. He wanted so badly to pull off this catch. With birds, he knew there was only one shot. He padded down towards the right, through a small clearing between some of the trees.

Blizzardstorm waited behind for a few moments. Once he had lost sight of Flurrypaw, he stalked through the undergrowth carefully, following behind silently. He wanted to chuckle, feeling rather silly stalking his own apprentice.

He wanted to chuckle, feeling rather silly stalking his own apprentice. Flurrypaw focused intently on the scent, only to stop and stand still as he heard the sound of small hopping on the leaves. There, amongst the undergrowth, was a bright red cardinal. The bird stuck out like a beacon, and Flurrypaw quickly trained his gaze on it, taking in a deep breath and remembering his hunting crouch adjustments.

"This is a great method to use when it gets cold enough that you know prey won't be scurrying above ground." He explained. "But, we have to make sure to not hunt out every hollow. We need some alive so we get more mice in newleaf." He purred.

He had waited all this time to demonstrate his skills, and finally he felt he was free to do so at last. "Right, I wouldn't have thought of that." He said, thinking ahead to newleaf.

"Nobody does at first. It's something that doesn't get talked about alot, but now you know." Hornetstrike chuckled, before he nodded once more. "We have to adapt as best as we can to when the seasons change. Alot of apprentices like to focus on becoming the best fighters of their peers, but there's a sort of skill and beauty that comes from a highly skilled hunter. Being well-rounded, now that's something that I think should be reached for more often." The white and black tom flicked his tail and mewed. "Let's bury the mouse for now and go try for some birds. They're harder to catch, but more plentiful than other prey in leafbare."

He waited with bated breath, hoping the bird would stay put. Flurrypaw crept closer to the bird, chanting in his mind to focus. He could do it! He had to prove he could be trusted to go hunt in Twolegplace with the Warriors. Finally, as he got close, he took a quiet breath and lunged. Just as Blizzardstorm had shown him, he snagged the bird but only managed to get one paw on it properly. It struggled fiercely, and Flurrypaw nearly panicked. He remembered the lesson, and quickly stretched his head forward to bite the bird and get a better hold on it.

That's all that matters right now. Perhaps you can deliver that bird to Yarrowcloud once we get back to camp."
