Hornetstrike huffed at Shadepaw.
"I think I do understand. You think it was easy for me? I started my apprenticeship at 9 moons instead of 6 since I was still recovering from being rescued in the snow. I didn't have any siblings or family or past to drive me. I had to work just as hard as you do if not more to gain any sort of merit. Shadepaw, you may be getting better, but your lack of self-confidence and humility will be a downfall." Hornetstrike warned, not in the mood to be told what he did and did not understand.

Shadepaw narrowed his eyes at his mentor. "You didn't have any pressure, no pressure to live up to anyone. You had no family legacy where if you fail you know everyone will be disapointed in you." He hissed at him. He was in a bad mood, he was tired from his nights in the dark forest. Sunflare was starting to rub off on him as well.

You don't see Mapleleaf getting huffy whenever Goldenclaw catches more prey. You're damaging yourself by building these levels that you do not need to beat anyone at..." Hornetstrike sighed.
"Just....go relax. You're obviously angered and I don't want to hear it." He stood and stalked away, the young warrior not understanding why Shadepaw was so bent on surpassing his siblings. Diamondheart was a deputy, and Hornetstrike could care less about competeing. He looked around for Whiteblaze.

Shadepaw hissed as Hornetstrike. He was a weak fool, he didn't understand anything about the clan or clan legacies. He wasn't dedicated, the stupid Tom just wanted to moon over any availble she-cat. He whipped around and went to his dead to lay down.
Whiteblaze was eating a mouse.

"At first he was fine and now he's snappy and learning moves I never remember teaching him. I mean, I'm fine if other cats are also teaching him, but he's crazy about some stupid "legacy" or something, he keeps belittling himself and...I really am not one to sit and listen to that." Hornetstrike shook his head.

Nighteye nodded. "I did." His eyes glowed with pride. If he hadn't gone back to the forest, he never would've been here... he would still be a rogue, foraging for food in Twoleg trash.
Magpiekit was trying to practice pouncing, but kept falling on her face.
Plumkit watched Magpiekit. "Let me try," she squeaked, wiggling her haunches.
Aspenkit was batting a moss ball around.

Hornetstrike sighed. Great, she was snappy too. Calming a bit, he shook his head.
"Well, he better get over it. It'll be worse for him. Besides, a family that only searches for pure perfection and chides on someone when they mess something up is messed up in the head." Hornetstrike sat down, and changed the subject.
"What names did those apprentices get? We missed the ceremomy." He asked.

"Good names." Hornetstrike nodded, noticing how she was grumbly now. He sighed heavily.
"Looook. It's fine. He can train as hard and work himself to death for his family, that's fine! But he's being impatient and snappy with others and I'm not okay with that." He explained. He looked at her.
"How do you expect me to help him through this when I have no idea how his family acts? I can't push him until he dies of exhaustion." He asked.

"I never said I wanted you to do that." Whiteblaze snapped at him. "All I said is that maybe he feels like he has to push himself because many of his family members are in respectable positions in the clan. I never said they pushed him, they probably don't, but that he probably pushes himself because he wants to be respected."

Hornetstrike sighed, but understood a bit. Yeah, he supposed one could push themselves for that reason. He spoke honestly.
"Maybe I wasn't the best choice in mentor. I don't have the empathy for that..." It was too late to change mentors now, he just hoped he could get Shadepaw to understand that he didn't need to bring himself down so much fot such reasons.

"You were a fine choice for a mentor. Mentorship is suppose to help the mentor grow and chance as much as the apprentice. You may not have been born here but this is an opportunity for you to respect and realize cats have been born into the clan and family history matters, especially to a young cat. You have to accept that and figure out how to make him realize is doesn't matter as much as he thinks it does." Whiteblaze stood.
