Skunkflight -- A red and hazel tortoiseshell Riverclan she-cat with an orange undertone to her fur. She has silky soft fur, long tail, small paws, and she is quite clumsy. She has light green eyes, two scratches on the left side of her face and both of her ears are cut. Her motherโs name is Yellowwing and her fatherโs name is Shortscar. Her mother was injured during a dog attack. Her mateโs name was Smallscree, and they had three kits: Darkstone, Hazelclover and Pikelightning. Her best friendโs name is Emeraldbreeze. Early in life, she was peaceful and just a little bit selfish and she is very intelligent and alert. However, once her mate was killed, she sort of lost the good in her and she became very hateful.
Kit --
Early in her life, Skunkkit was known for her clumsiness, it was quite endearing. She was always considered rather lovely, what with her silky soft fur and long tail. She was always very intelligent, always on top of things. She was coddled by her parents since she was their only child, and this fostered her sense of selfishness, something that followed her throughout life.
She was always content, having quite a peaceful outlook on life. Skunkkit also had a best friend named Emeraldkit and they were connected at the hip, you would never see one without the other. Their parents encouraged their relationship, Emeraldkit was the only kit in her litter as well, and it was good for them to have some sort of sibling relationship built. They were apprenticed together, and they sort of went their separate ways for a time.
Apprentice --
Skunkpaw was apprenticed to Tigerice, and this suited her quite well, he was known for his intense style of mentoring. Skunkpaw felt the need to learn as much as she could as fast as she could, because she did not like to repeat things and stay stuck on something for long periods of time. She learned quickly, and this was something that Tigerice noticed. He pushed her harder than the other apprentices that he had mentored.
Skunkpaw and Emeraldpaw did not have much time to visit and see each other, and they sort of distanced themselves from each other. Their relationship became more healthy rather than clingy. Now that they had the time apart, they got their own circle of friends apart from each other, but none were as strong as their own friendship.
Emeraldpaw had made a new friend of her own while she was by herself, Russetpaw. She was a moon older than Skunkpaw, and Skunkpaw had considered her an acquaintance before, but now that Emeraldpaw was close with Russetpaw, the three of them became great friends.
The three of them got into great mischief together, they were very curious when put all together; sort of reckless. Twice, their curiousness got them really hurt. Once, they got into an ant hill, only to figure out that it was a fire ant hill. Another time, they were playing around a tree, and they noticed that there was a hive up in it. They kept daring each other to climb up and poke it. Skunkpaw knew how to goad Russetpaw into doing almost anything, all you had to do was say that she was too scared, and she would race to do whatever thing you were trying to do. She climbed up the tree, and poked at the hive, waking the wasps and they chased after the three she-cats.
Despite their ventures, the three she-cats did quite well with their apprenticeship. Skunkpaw was ahead of the other two, even though Russetpaw was an apprentice for a whole moon longer than Skunkpaw. Skunkpaw made sure to ask Tigerice to have training sessions with Emeraldpaw so that she could help her. With her help, Emeraldpaw was on track to become a warrior in line with Russetpaw at least.
Yellowwing was really proud of her daughter, she was doing well as an apprentice and she had two wonderful friends. She wanted to take them out, so on a day that they were all off apprentice duty, she took the three of them out and about in the territory. They had traveled quite a distance away from camp, far enough that it would take a couple minutes to run back when they came across fresh dog scent. Instantly, their hackles rose and they bolted to the nearest tree. The girls began climbing quickly, and Yellowwing stayed down until she was sure the three were safe. The dog came thundering out of the bushes, and Yellowwing was climbing the tree when the dog reached her. She was just low enough for the dog to grab hold of her tail and it yanked her down. Yellowwing screeched, and Skunkpaw looked down in apt horror and yowled in protest.
The dog slammed Yellowwing to the ground, and one of her claws got torn out trying to hold on to the tree. Skunkpaw raced down the tree, nearly knocking Emeraldpaw and Russetpaw to the ground as well. Skunkpaw jumped on the dog, and the two girls were quickly down after her. The dog didnโt stand a chance, but it managed to get in a couple of swipes sliced through both of Skunkpawโs ears, and Emeraldpaw got a bite on her paw as she was going in for an attack. Russetpaw had jumped onto the dogโs back, and that was when the dog knew it was over. It yowled in fury and defeat, Russetpaw jumped off its back before it turned tail and ran back the way it came.
None of them sustained serious injuries, though Yellowwing was a bit winded. She was surprised at the tree of them, and they were standing a little taller at her praise. Yellowwing insisted on hurrying back to camp in case the dog came back with some friends and to also look after their scrapes.
That night, they were praised and the leader, Firestar, informed them that she believed they were ready for their final assessment, and the girls were ecstatic, their wounds forgotten in light of the excitement. They didnโt sleep well that night, too excited for the following dayโs event. They each went out with their respective mentors, and they all passed.
Later that night, they had their warrior ceremony. Skunkpaw became Skunkflight, Emeraldpaw became Emeraldbreeze and Russetpaw became Russetcreek. That night they held their warrior vigil. (Skunkflight and Emeraldbreeze were 13 moons, Russetcreek 14 moons,)
Warrior --
The girls got a lot of attention for their latest escapade, and Skunkflight noticed a particular tom who was giving her more attention than usual. She told Russetcreek and Emeraldbreeze later that day and Emeraldbreeze giggled with her friend, but Russetcreek huffed under her breath. Skunkflight turned to her warily, โ
What? Is there something wrong with him?โ she asked. Russetcreek shook her head and gave an airy, โ
No,โ before giving her chest fur a few licks. Skunkflight gave Emeraldbreeze a sideways glance, but they dropped the subject.
They picked up in their duties, going out on as many patrols as they could and bringing home the most prey. They each grew up a little more, they were keen on receiving their first apprentice. There was a queen who had given birth to five healthy kits about two moons earlier, and the girls were hopeful. Much of the clan was very pleased with their performance thus far. Skunkflight noticed that the tom who noticed her was following their example, going on patrols and hunting during down time. They saw him often in the forest, and Skunkflight was pleased.
One day out, Russetcreek and Skunkflight were out hunting together, Emeraldbreeze had a patrol - it was the first she ever lead! While they were hunting, Skunkflight saw the tom, Smallscree, and she felt her pelt grow warm. He nodded to her, โ
Good afternoon Skunkflight,โ he said, his eyes warm. She returned the greeting and she noticed Russetcreek stiffen at her side. She didnโt acknowledge it though so Smallscree wouldnโt take notice, she didnโt want him to think her friend was strange. Smallscree continued on his way, and Skunkflight turned to talk to Russetcreek, ask if she was ok but Russetcreek cut her off, โ
I think I smell squirrel over there,โ she said hastily and padded in the direction she had motioned to.
Skunkflight was going to wait for Russetcreek, but she never came back. Skunkflight was worried, and she followed her scent a ways, but when it appeared that Russetcreek was heading back to camp, Skunkflight broke off her tracking and padded to where their prey was stashed. Sure enough, Russetcreekโs stash was gone. Skunkflight picked up her prey, not as much as she would have liked to take, but it was getting a little late and she didnโt feel comfortable staying in the forest alone.
As Skunkflight was returning home, she bumped into Smallscree, and they got to talking. Skunkflight was a little nervous, but she was happy he was talking to her. They walked into camp together, and as she set down her prey he asked if she would like to eat with him. She accepted graciously, and they picked a larger squirrel and sat near the edges of camp and continued talking. Skunkflight was so absorbed that she didnโt notice Russetcreek seething in the shadows.
Once Emeraldbreeze returned from her patrol, she saw Skunkflight talking with Smallscree and she smirked. She padded over to the two and made a couple of cheeky comments and Skunkflight glared at her playfully. Emeraldbreeze took that as her cue to leave and winked at Skunkflight before turning and padding off in search of Russetcreek.
Emeraldbreeze saw Russetcreek over sitting in the shadow of the warriors den, staring at Skunkflight and Smallscree. Emeraldbreezeโs ears pulled back to lay flat against her head for a moment, but she didnโt want Russetcreek to have her guard up. She sat down next to her and said hello, Russetcreek gave the slightest of nods in her direction but continued looking over at Skunkflight and Smallscree. Emeraldbreeze felt bad, but she didnโt bring it up. She talked about her patrol that she had, and she talked about a scent that they had found that was just on the other side of the border and when Russetcreek didnโt respond she said that Shadowclan declared war and her patrol had to handle all of the clan alone. Russetcreek just grunted in assent and Emeraldbreeze just shook her head. Emeraldbreeze stood up and stretched, then padded over to Russetcreek and bumped her shoulder, โ
Come on, letโs get something to eat.โ This roused Russetcreek and she stood, taking one last look over at the two and then she pointedly looked away.
Smallscree and Skunkflight grew closer over the next moon, and they were going on more and more hunting trips alone. This angered Russetcreek, but Emeraldbreeze couldnโt be happier for them. Russetcreek kept going out alone as well, trying to catch Smallscree alone. She would catch him sometimes when Skunkflight was away for a couple of minutes, and they would exchange small talk, it was harmless enough. Russetcreek was delighted, believing she was getting closer to Smallscree, but he didnโt see it that way.
Russetcreek was heartened by these small conversations that they were having and was emboldened, seeking him out more often even when Skunkflight was there. In Russetcreekโs mind, they were doing something a little risquรฉ and they shared some secret from Skunkflight. Neither Skunkflight nor Smallscree noticed this, and they just saw it as the three of them getting along.
Russetcreek planned to try and get Smallscree alone and she imagined them declaring their unsaid feelings for each other. Then, the kits were finally old enough to become apprentices. The three girls, Smallscree and a more experienced warrior were chosen to mentor them. Suddenly, they were all busy with training again and Russetcreek had to put off her little meeting. She made every effort she could to get Smallscree to come alone with her to train their apprentices together, but then Smallscree would invite Skunkflight along. Russetcreek always took this as him not wanting to hurt Skunkflightโs feelings. Russetcreek would still find any excuse to talk with Smallscree, and she always had the mentality that they were hiding something.
The mentors would also group up their apprentices for battle training so they could learn how to work together. The apprentices were very promising, and because they would train together in battle they learned how each other worked. It became second nature training together, and the mentors all agreed that they would be very worried to meet the apprentices in battle.
By now, Skunkflight is about 21 moons, and her apprentice is nearly a warrior. Because Skunkflight is a very focused person, she managed to get her apprentice trained up quicker than she was. Skunkflight had also helped the other three so that they were all on schedule, the other apprentice was in the same place. The more experienced warrior was not about to be shown up by four new warriors thank you very much. So when their apprentices were 11 moons, they had their warrior ceremony.
Skunkflight and Smallscree only grew closer now that their mentoring was finished, and they spent most of their time together. Russetcreek was not disheartened however, and she was finally able to set up her meeting with Smallscree. She made it very clear that she wanted to meet him alone the following night, and Smallscree was confused. He spoke to Skunkflight about this, and she too was confused, but she saw no problem with it so she encouraged him to go. This was when Skunkflight smiled, for she had her own thing to discuss with him. Skunkflight took Smallscree to the side of camp where they were ensured more privacy, and she told him that she was pregnant. She said she wanted to wait to tell him until she was sure, and now there was no doubt in her mind.
Smallscree was overjoyed, and he walked with a spring in his step. He told Skunkflight that he would track down Russetcreek and call it off so he could stay with her, but Skunkflight told him he was ridiculous and she ushered him away the next night when the meeting was scheduled.
Smallscree really had no idea what Russetcreek had planned, but he hoped that it wouldnโt take long so he could return to Skunkflight quickly. Smallscree traveled to the place that Russetcreek had told him about. She had picked a place that had a swift flowing creek, it went about up to their โelbowsโ, she had chosen this because her name was โcreekโ and she thought it appropriate.
Russetcreek became flustered and nervous, her tone almost mirrored that of a younger child, โ
So, um. I think you can imagine why I asked you here. I mean, weโve been hiding this for moons now,โ she said, her fur flushed and she was switching from looking at him and looking at her paws.
If Smallscree had been confused before, it was nothing compared to how he was feeling now. He tilted his head and looked at Russetcreek, โ
What do you mean?โ he asked, his tone sincere. Russetcreek laughed in one short burst, โWhat, do you need me to say it?โ she giggled, still looking between him and her paws.
Smallscree ducked his head, trying to keep her gaze, โ
Really Russetcreek, what are you talking about?โ he asked, and she giggled again when he said her name. She felt a little bit heartened by this, and she stepped closer to him, โ
Well, Iโm talking about you and me,โ she said, her heartbeat racing as she said these words.
Smallscree was taken aback, โYou and me?โ he asked, but Russetcreek thought he was confirming that he had feelings for her and she broke into loud purrs at this. She took the last few steps to him and she pressed herself to his side, her tail flicking with excitement, โI knew it! Oh Smallscree!โ she exclaimed.
Smallscree jumped away from her as though her pelt was stabbing into his side, โ
Wait, Russetcreek! Iโm in love with Skunkflight! Weโre having kits!โ He was a little angry then, โ
Russetcreek, I think you and I need to stay away from each other from now on.โ
Russetcreek was appalled by his fierce rejection, and she was also angry now, โ
You and Skunkflight are having kits when you and I are in love?!โ she exclaimed. She believed that Smallscree had betrayed their relationship, โ
I canโt believe youโve done this to me! To us!โ
Smallscree chimed in then, โ
There is no us! There never was an us! Are you blind, Russetcreek?โ Smallscree spat those last words, and Russetcreek flinched as though they were blows.
Russetcreek shook her head in small movements, โ
You donโt mean that Smallscree. (she said this to the affect of โbabyโ in real people language) Iโm sorry I got so mad,โ Russetcreekโs tone became silky soft and dripped with a sweetness that was lethal, โ
really I donโt care that Skunkflight is pregnant.โ The name was coated with venom, and Russetcreek made to press up against Smallscree again.
Smallscree backed away quickly, knowing her intent, โ
Really Russetcreek, go away!โ he spat again and turned to leave. This was the last straw for Russetcreek. She pounced on Smallscree, screeching and spitting with anger. She dug her outstretched claws into his flank, dragging him towards the creek.
โฆ
Russetcreek padded into camp later. Her pelt was drenched, and there were darker patches that looked nothing like water. Skunkflight had been sitting up waiting for Smallscree to return, and she was confused when Russetcreek walked into camp alone. Skunkflight stood and padded over to Russetcreek, a friendly smile on her face, โ
Hey, whereโs Smallscree? I thought he was supposed to meet you tonight?โ she asked, her head tilted. As she got closer, she noticed that Russetcreek was wet, โWhy are you all wet?โ
Russetcreek disregarded these questions and asked one of her own, โ
Is it true? Are you pregnant?โ she asked, her voice dead. Skunkflight furrowed her brows, but smiled all the same, โ
Yes, I just told Smallscree yesterday, where is he?โ she asked again, looking over Russetcreekโs shoulder to the camp entrance, looking for Smallscree.
Russetcreek yowled in fury and attacked Skunkflight, landing a deep cut in her cheek. Skunkflight jumped back in surprise and frustration, โ
Russetcreek! Whatโs the matter with you?!โ she asked, preparing to defend herself if need be. Others came out to Skunkflightโs aid and they restrained Russetcreek.
Skunkflight was furious, but her fury drained out as she put the pieces together and she was quickly filled with an enormous dread. Skunkflight raced forward towards Russetcreek, โ
Where is Smallscree?โ she screeched at Russetcreek, but Russetcreek just cackled in her face. It was then that Skunkflight really looked at Russetcreek, and she saw the darker patches of wetness on her pelt. She cried out in pain and anguish and she raced out of camp, Tigerice by her side. Tigerice stopped Skunkflight before she got too far, and a couple of other warriors had followed them out of camp. Skunkflight howled and screeched and was writhing against Tigericeโs hold, but she was so distraught with pain that her struggling didnโt do much. Tigerice managed to get out of her what was wrong, and the surrounding warriors were silent with astonishment. One of them returned to camp to tell Firestar what had happened, and the others went to retrieve Smallscree.
โฆ
Skunkflight had her kits and she watched over them. She grew very hateful, and it was suggested to her that she should let someone else take care of her kits. She held onto them though, they were the only things she had left of Smallscree, she would never harm them like everyone worried about. Emeraldbreeze tried to remain by her side, but Skunkflight made it difficult.
Russetcreek had been banished from the clans, and Firestar spread the word to the other clans so they would know not to allow her residence.
