Paleeyes joined the rest of the patrol, having only minor injuries this battle. She hadn’t let her skills get rusty while she was in the nursery. “I’m alright.” She mewed.

Diamondheart nodded his relief, certainly so when he saw Fluffpaw and Crookedpaw still standing and talking, clearly not injured enough for it to be grave. The deputy supported Koishade, mewing evenly. “Riverclan is victorious then. Excellent work, all of you. I’ll be sending extra patrols out to keep the border protected until we know Thunderclan will relent. Earthstar will be pleased with this news.” He felt a small thrum of heaviness that there needed to be a fight in the first place, though he also knew a deputy could not put anything before the clan.
“Let’s leave a few more marks and then we can return to camp and switch in a fresh patrol for the night.”

Koishade was relieved to have the support of the deputy, wincing in pain. "I think I can make it. Frostmoon... she's really strong." she remarked. She hoped her leg injury wouldn't get infected. "She almost had me there..."
Slatesight followed the other ThunderClan cats.

Ottermask left a few more marks upon the rocks. His ears were back and guilt stung his heart. He had done nothing. While his clanmates fought, he just stood upon the rocks like a deer in the light of monsters. He should've fought for them! He should've helped Koishade! He couldn't even get himself to look at his clanmates. What is wrong with me? Ottermask caught his reflection in the river and he almost flinched at what he saw. He was once a great warrior, wasn't he? So what happened to cause him to fall away from that?
Sootclaw fled with the rest of the ThunderClan patrol, hisses on his lips.

I am hoping this will be a lesson for her, as hard as I know a young Warrior will take a loss.” Diamondheart mewed, wondering just how much his niece would resent him for this in the future. Such was the way of kin in different clans. He focused on Koishade again, though his eyes strayed towards Ottermask with a flicker of concern.

Sootclaw fled with the rest of the ThunderClan patrol, hisses on his lips. “You look down, Ottermask.” Fluffpaw approached the older tom, having always practically been an uncle to her and her sisters. They were kin by blood, even, though she hated that most cats refused to talk about just who that blood was shared with. She tilted her head lightly. “This was a victory! Why do you look as if you lost?”

Ottermask flicked his tail. He shouldn't be moping in front of the apprentices. "You fought well, Fluffpaw," he changed the subject and smiled to hide his personal turmoil. "I saw the way you handled that ThunderClan apprentice. I'll have to let Littleshadow know her training isn't going to waste. Go walk with Diamondheart and Koishade. If ThunderClan comes back on us, they'll need your protection. I need to mark a few more scents."

Though, Crookedpaw deserves as much if not more praise for that one…Don’t take too long now, Ottermask.” She mused, inwardly curious as to why he seemed to want to be alone.

Ottermask waited for the apprentice to head off before he turned around to remark the border once again. He wanted to linger to make sure ThunderClan didn't come back. He wouldn't put it past those kittypets to move the border again once they were gone. The least he could do is wait and see and report it to Earthstar for another patrol go back out when the ThunderClan cats were gone.

Her siblings were going to have some thoughts about this when they got back, weren't they? She hoped they wouldn't worry too much about her.

Diamondheart noticed Ottermask's departure to mark the edge of the rocks again. The deputy felt a prickle of unease, able to tell something was off. "Ottermask." He called, hesitating for a second before he continued speaking. "Did you want to stay as lookout while we switch out the patrols? You could watch from the top of the rocks and run back a warning if Thunderclan retaliates. I'll make the switch as quickly as I can, but we need to get Koishade back to camp." He offered.

"I planned on watching from the reeds." Ottermask looked back at the deputy and motioned to the still water with his tail. "If they see me waiting here, they'll just remain hidden until I leave. But, if I hide in the water, they'll feel its safe enough to cross onto our Sunningrocks. I'll be able to slip away and warn you at camp and they won't even know I was here."

Diamondheart smiled softly at the suggestion, nodding once. "Clever. Then, there's nobody else I trust more to keep watch. We'll be back really soon. I'll tell Smogstorm where you are too. Wouldn't want her to think something happened to you." He promised, giving his adoptive littermate one last thoughtful look, before signaling for the patrol to fall behind him as he continued to support Koishade. Fluffpaw glanced once again at Ottermask, before she turned away and siddled back up to Crookedpaw's side. Maybe Eeelshock would agree that the younger tom was worth the effort of bringing into their fold.

Ottermask nodded to the deputy, grateful that he would inform Smogstorm that he was okay. However, the guilt picked at him once again. He was okay all because he didn't do anything...

Ottermask slipped into the reeds to watch for a potential ThunderClan patrol.

Brookheart padded at Icepath's side, lifting his nose to scent carefully as they approached Sunningrocks. He could smell blood and Ottermask's scent, hopefully the two were not freshly connected. He poked his head from the reeds, glancing up at Riverclan's newly reclaimed territory.

Icepath raised her head to see Sunningrocks, scanning the border to make sure there was no sign of ThunderClan. She couldn't scent anything other than Ottermask and the new border. Good. "Ottermask?" she called, knowing he was probably hiding away in the reeds.

Ottermask tilted his ear back at the sound of his clanmates. He slipped through the water and reeds to greet them. "All's been quiet." He climbed out of the water, but didn't even bother to shake out his pelt. Nodding to Icepath, he spoke again. "ThunderClan hasn't tried to take Sunningrocks back."

"That's a relief." Brookheart sighed, looking at Ottermask with steady blue eyes. "Were you injured during the fight? We can take your station if you'd like to return to camp to be checked over." The senior Warrior offered. "Thunderclan knows Icepath and I well enough to know that we're not budging."

Ottermask couldn't help but pull his ears back in guilt. "No, I wasn't injured." He didn't even want to address the comment about ThunderClan knowing the two of them. It left a bitter taste in his mouth. He's done a lot for the Clan too. "There's only the two of you. If ThunderClan came back with a full patrol. You'd be outnumbered."

"I think we'd be able to stay under cover long enough for one of us to call for help." Icepath replied, looking over the reeds that kept Ottermask hidden. "But it looks like we're safe for now. It's up to you to decide if you want to stay or not." She was glad the tom was uninjured.

Silentpaw followed after Icepath and Brookheart, looking around at Sunningrocks with wide eyes. “You don’t think ThunderClan will try to steal them back when we leave, do you?” She asked, looking at the two senior warriors.

“Thunderclan are proud, but Lightningstar is no fool. I believe he would not risk his Warriors over a fight he knows he would not win. Riverclan fights for what belongs to us. But that is all we are aiming for. Thunderclan can keep their territory beyond this point.” Brookheart mused as he slipped towards the rocks, blending into the water with his dark blue pelt.

Ottermask flicked his ear and looked over each member of the patrol. He didn't really feel like staying here, but he knew he should since he wasn't any help in the border skirmish. "I'll head back to camp," he found himself saying. He didn't address the patrol any further and just left.

Icepath watched curiously as Ottermask left, flicking her tail. Was it just her, or was something bothering the tom? "I hope he isn't hiding something about the skirmish from us." she remarked. "I feel like he had something on his mind."

"I feel like he had something on his mind." “He has for a while.” Brookheart murmured honestly. “Ever since that patrol in the fire, he has. Orchidnight doesn’t make it very subtle when it comes to her feelings about how he led that patrol. It wasn’t his fault that our Clanmates took the risk to protect Riverclan…but it’s hard to not blame yourself when you are the one who lives.” The senior Warrior sighed softly.

Icepath huffed. "It's a difficult situation to be in. I don't know if I could forgive myself if I were in his paws... but we shouldn't blame him, like you said." She continued staring towards where he had left, nothing but the rustling of the reeds remaining. "I hope he knows that he's not alone."

Maybe they’d make it to the elder’s den together in the future. “You’d never let him feel alone. You’re good at being there.” He mewed honestly to his sister.
