So I uh...wrote That story for Peony and kinda gave myself the feels Again. Prolly an Au, since she'll most likely get escorted there during the rp. But, yeah. She’d been in the camp for days… and already so much had happened. She liked to think, at least with a few cats, she had an okay relationship. Badgerheart threw her looks when she passed, and she tried to sneer back, but it was harder as the days went on. Nettlehawk needled her about things, but… it felt like it was mostly good natured. The leader was kind, but busy. Ottersplash had taught her how to fish. Noisepaw and Pricklepaw had busy lives as apprentices, and her heart went out to them…
So frequently she found herself alone in the camp, watching by herself with a heavy heart.
Ravenfur and Starlingpaw, holed away in the medicine cats den while they tried to heal? She hadn’t seen anything so horrific if in her life before. She found herself dreaming of it, nightmares plagued her- and alone in the small area she had carved out as her own sleeping area, she didn’t find much comfort from them.
She hadn’t really left the camp since then. Warriors were busy, she hated to ask them to go out with her, but she did, just often enough to hunt to bring something back so she felt like she could eat. Food had never been scarce with her humans. She got it on time every day and extra when she asked… Now a days she barely felt like eating.
Peony stares at her paws, feeling in a daze.
Her humans. The promise of seeing them every day hadn’t been fulfilled, and as if she could. If they were waiting for her, they’d take her when they found her and she would be saying goodbye forever. If they had left… she certainly didn’t know the way back to her house… so far away in a place she didn’t know how to get back to. She looks up at the camp.
They had welcomed her. Would they welcome her then? Her throat felt tight and her whiskers twitched. What if they didn’t?
There was a guard at the front of the entrance but… Peony finds a small break in the wall elsewhere- she’d have to tell them about it later- she squeezes out of the hole and walks.
She’d find it eventually, the spot where her humans had been. ~~~
It’s only after the sky has gone red that she does. The warm reds and oranges, the soft pink clouds floating in the sky, and the birds going quiet with chatter all feel like claws in her stomach. The site is wrecked, to say the least. Branches, leaves, rocks all may look normal in the woods, but her people had cleared it away to put up the odd shelter… The canvas was knocked and broken against a tree ahead of her.
She ignores the can in front of her and chirps hopefully- that always got their attention. She listens. She chirps. She listens again. She chirps again… slowly moving towards the shelter to peer inside.
Of course they weren’t inside.
She travels down into the woods again- they’d taken this path to the noisemaker. Perhaps they were sleeping inside… it was warm, it was dry. It’d make sense.
There is no noisemaker near the larger path where they had left it. There is another can, a bowl of water, and silence. The tightness in her throat doesn’t go away, even after she drinks, and mindlessly she walks back to the site and stares down into the empty can. Creatures had picked it off, whatever Pate was in there was gone. They’d left it for her. They had hoped to draw her back, to keep her fed. She’d stupidly wandered off. She’d stupidly gone into the woods. She stupidly stayed away for days. There was no way her people were coming back for her. Her body sags, her ears droop.
Peony chirps. Peony listens. Peony chirps Peony collapses next to the can and wails.
~~~
When she gets back to the camp, it's dark, and cold, and her fur is plastered to her in a way that makes her look so much smaller. She comes in slinking past the guard who looks between her and the inside of the camp in confusion… Peony beelines for the small area she had carved out as her own sleeping area. Nightmares plagued her, she didn’t find much comfort from them.
The next day she forces a cheerful expression on her face, greets cats as normal, and makes her way to Shadestar’s den; Peony asks “…Shadestar, I was… wondering if I may have a moment of your time?” Peony listens.
weeelllllll while tryna find some fitting songs for my cats i did at least find a song which felt to me like it was a general fit for the whole dark forest plot, especially the shockingly large amount of cats who think "yeah! we're doing a good thing and helping!" i don't know if you can turn on captions in embedded videos, but you'll need to view this with captions to know the lyrics, unless you speak japanese
Ever since Cinnamon posed the question in the beginning of the thread I've been thinking about this but there's just no songs that I know that I think really fit any of my characters. If anything I think it'd be more of a mixtape at this point xD Although Follow My Feet would fit Ivypaw's whole decision making thing I don't think it would fit him. Snowfawn's theme song would be something more up beat, but not like any pop or something that sounded kiddie. It would have a bit of fire to it
I can see where Peony's confusion would have come from though, seeing as shadestar said "I want her to stay in camp. But at least once everyday, I want a kind warrior and Noisepaw at least to accompany her to her home to visit it", and she hasn't gone out once to twoleg place, lol...
But yeah I'm the one who asked the stupid theme song question and even I don't know what would be my cats themesongs lmao. It's so hard to decide!!
It's alright. We all have those days. I'll edit it to something like.. She’d been in the camp for days… and already so much had happened. As for theme songs for cats... I GOT CARRIED AWAY HERE. I BASICALLY WENT THROUGH ALL MY OLD MUSIC AND YOUTUBE HISTORY WOW
See, for Peony I see something up beat, maybe a touch of sadness, but because of that story I wrote all I keep imagining is "Move along" by the all american rejects With how it is now...Maybe Home, by Philip Phillips?
Nettlehawk is something fierce for sure... Light em up, fall out boy? Fits with her seeming to know that many cats are walking among the dark forest, but if it was more a song about her aging and accepting it... Maybe 7 Years, by Lukas Graham?
Another good twilightclan theme: This is war, 30 seconds to mars DF cats/Starclan cats: My eyes, Dr. Horrible sing along blog
(Cinnamon: Badgerheart... Warriors by Imagine dragons?)
I think Phoenix By Fall Out Boy could also fit Badgerheart.
Bad Blood by Creature Feature for Scarletpool.
Mudtooth could have any song that has to deal with feeling ugly.
Otterplash something bubbly or maybe water related.
Breezewhisper idk
OOO hawk... Creature Feature music <3 Good stuff there. Songs about feeling ugly.... www.ranker.com/list/songs-about-being-ugly/ranker-music Here are some. I thought I remembered like an actual song that I knew that fits, but I can't think of it right now.... Breezewhisper seems a lot like.. opportunity, responsibility hmm, not quite sure. Kind of hard to pick for other characters unless you stumble upon them. Pricklepaw is a sweetie... We have so many apprentices, but Pricklepaw hasnt gotten the opportunity to run into a bunch of them quite yet..
Oh boy guys get ready, this one is a feels monster. Its a part 1- I intend on writing a little more to fully flesh out Badgerheart's backstory, but the two events that made him who he is today have really different themes to them? So here's the sad one first, and the next one will have much more conflict/fighting/angst. After that I promise I will post something happy, so nobody has to feel bad LOL Also sweetclover1 Mockingbird did play a really minor role in this, I hope thats ok. If not, I can totally change the name or rewrite it a little. Heart of a Warrior
The clan was astir with motion and talk, cats gossiping and arguing and looking altogether shocked. A rogue group consisting of quite a few cats had been found lurking in the swamps just outside of Twilightclan territory, all of them with a mysterious illness. They had begged for help, and the border patrol had taken them into camp, hoping to ask Robinstar for guidance. She had agreed to provide the cats overnight lodging so that the medicine cats could look over them, but there was some displeasure with her decision.
One cat in particular, a dark, longhaired tom, stepped forward to loudly voice his concern “Robinstar please, you have to think of the good of the clan! If what these cats have is serious, then you could be endangering the whole of Twilightclan! We have elders and queens who cannot afford to be subjected to an unknown illness!” He called out, conviction evident in his voice.
Robinstar met his gaze evenly from upon the Star Rock “It is only one night Thunderstep, and our medicine cats are perfectly capable of minimizing the contact with the illness. We have faced much worse in this clan and come out the other side strong. I see no reason why we cannot offer aide to these cats in their time of need” she meowed, signaling that the decision was not up for debate.
The dark tom opened his mouth to speak again, but his mate’s white tail covered his mouth, silencing him. Her gaze was patient and quiet, and when she motioned for him to follow he padded along behind her, discontentment in every pawstep. Robinstar watched them go, and turned to her deputy, meowing quietly to him “I’m not sure if it was a good idea, allowing Thunderstep to mentor his kit. I know we are in short supply of warriors but… I worry about him passing on his temper to Badgerpaw…”
The black and white tom watched solemnly from the apprentice’s den with his fellow trainees, his face a mixture of emotions as he watched his parents duck into the warriors den. What was so wrong about helping others?
---------
“It’s been days now Mockingbird, why hasn’t she made any improvement?!” Thunderstep growled, his muzzle thrust into the face of the smaller she-cat. She stood her ground, glaring up at him with conviction. “So help me if you keep coming around here griping at me about her condition, we’re never going to get anywhere. Now Leave. Me. Alone so that I can work, Thunderstep! You’re worse than a worried queen sometimes!” she quipped back, making eye contact with the small apprentice behind him. “And for goodness sakes, you’re scaring the living daylight out of Badgerpaw- why don’t both of you go get some fresh air? You desperately need it..” she finished, turning around dismissively and ducking her head into the medicine cat den.
The large dark tom gumbled, but all the same he turned to the younger cat and signaled him to follow, padding irritably out of camp. They walked quite a distance, neither of them speaking until Badgerpaw finally worked up the courage to speak his thoughts. “Dad.. is she going to be okay? Mockingbird is going to take care of mom and the other cats, right? Robinstar said they could handle it” he mewed cautiously, reaching for reassurance from his father. “You are to call me Thunderstep so long as you are my apprentice Badgerpaw, you know that.” The larger cat replied, his annoyance and worry seeping into his voice. “You know, this is a good lesson for you for when you’re an older warrior” Badgerpaw crooked his head to the side. He liked learning things from his father, and he looked up at him expectantly.
Sitting down, Thunderstep assumed the position he usually did when he lectured his son about something. His head held high, tail wrapped around his paws, he spoke with his eyes closed, as if focusing intently on his words. “The first and most important rule of the warrior code is to defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle. You see Badgerpaw, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. You may be kind to other cats, but your priority must always be your clan.”
Badgerpaw wrinkled his nose confusedly. “Thunderstep I already know this. You’ve told me the warrior code so many times I could recite it in my sleep. Why are you reminding me now?” His father could be so confusing sometimes. It was always ‘warrior code this’ and ‘duty to your clan’ that. Why was the warrior code even so important if they were the only clan in the area anyway? "I am telling you this, Badgerpaw, because our leader has broken this very rule of the warrior code.” Thunderstep growled, anger flashing in his eyes. “Despite the warnings of several warriors in the clan, including myself, Robinstar let those cats into camp, and now half the clan is sick to one degree or another!” Badgerheart’s eyes widened. Could that be true? Would Robinstar really be breaking the warriors’ code by helping the rogues…? His attention snapped back up to his father, whose face had a peculiar quality to it.
“Your mother- Snowfeather… she’s very ill. If Robinstar hadn’t let those cats in, she would be perfectly healthy, fulfilling her duties to the clan and going on patrol with us. But as it stands, there’s a chance.. Your mother, she…”
--------
“Die?! I don’t… I don’t understand. You’re a strong warrior! Mockingbird has all the herbs you need, and I’ll bring you fresh kill every day! I promise!” Badgerheart’s mouth hung open, his eyes wide and full of fear. Why was his mother telling him this? Why was this happening? “You shouldn’t say things like that, you’re making it seem like Robinstar was wrong! And- and… the word of the clan leader is the warrior code, so you can’t go against it! That’s a rule, dad said so!”
His mother’s eyes were calm and patient. Her flowing white fur was matted and unkempt, and her body was starting to show characteristic signs of extreme weight loss, but her face… her face never lost its serene, calm, compassionate expression. “Oh, my kit… your heart is too soft for this. I do not fear death, and I do not resent my leader for showing compassion. Starclan greets me, and I do not fear their welcoming embrace. “
Badgerheart shook his head, tears threatening to spill over his puffy muzzle. “But.. you’re still going to see me become the best warrior, right? You promised that you would stay up all night in the warriors den so that if I got tired on my vigil, you would wake me up! I.. I don’t want you to die.. It’s not fair!” he yowled, his voice threatening to break into deep sobs.
Snowfeather’s eyes softened, and though her heart ached for her son’s sorrow, she knew he would be fine without her, as strong as he was. “I promise that no matter what, I will always be with you. No matter what, I will be there for you to see you become a warrior.” She meowed softly. There was no way of telling him that when the day came, she may be watching him from Starclan instead.
--------------
Robinstar’s voice was full of sorrow as she spoke to the crowd gathering below her atop the high rock overlooking the clan. The cats below her showed sorrow on their faces- every new day that she announced the dead, she felt a greater burden on herself and the clan. Not many had died, but... had she made the right choice…?
“I want the clan to take a moment from their grieving tonight to celebrate. Although Snowfeather passes on to watch us from Starclan, she had one last wish here among us, and that was for her son to receive his warrior name. Badgerpaw, will you step forward?”
The small tom emerged from the crowd, and although by all appearances he was doing his best to hold his head and tail high, the grief was evident in his every feature. His eyes sagged from tears, and his feet moved like the weight of a hundred cats pressed upon him. He sat at the bottom of the stone pillar, his face holding none of the natural excitement it should have.
“Badgerpaw, in honor of your mother’s love for you and your dedication to the clan and the warrior code, I give you the name Badgerheart. May the love of your mother follow you always, and provide you with an even deeper sense of compassion for your clanmates, whom she held always in her heart.” She started the chant of his name then, and the clan joined up weakly around him. Badgerheart turned, scanning the crowd of cats for his father’s face, but when he spotted him, the tom was not even looking in his direction. He did not join in the cheering, and his face rested intently on Robinstar, cold fury filling his eyes.
“Thank you all. Your encouragement to this warrior in his time of need tells many tales of your ability to show compassion in these difficult times. That will conclude this clan meeting. Badgerheart will stand vigil tonight, and any cats are welcome to join him to sit vigil for Snowfeather.” She meowed, moving back into her den.
The cats dispersed, and Badgerheart silently took his place at the edge of camp. A crack of thunder rang out overhead, and as rain began to fall, cats quickly moved out of the clearing and into their dens, avoiding soaking their pelts, but also neglecting to sit for the snowy cat’s last night within the clan. Badgerheart didn’t mind the rain. He welcomed it. After all, his father always told him that his tears made him look weak, and on his first night as a warrior, he did not want to disappoint his clanmates.
He would never let them be disappointed again, if he could stop it. And so the hours dragged on through the night.
Never once did he feel tired.
Okay, so this is an *extremely* long shot type bizz. I am fully aware that this will probably not happen since Shadestar is a new leader and all, but this is if Ivypaw were to become leader at the end of everything. I didn't include Shadestar or Breezewhisper because I wasn't sure where they would be. The only iffy one is Pricklepaw since I'm not sure if she would be alive or dead. HOPEFULLY it's okay, but here we go A New Chapter Begins Ivyfang blinked his eyes open. Being so used to the dark forest, the sights of Starclan were still a bit disorienting. Beside him, Owlfoot padded up to join him. He blinked his greeting to his medicine cat. He may not have chosen to kill, but his personality hadn't changed by much. All around them their starry ancestors appeared, but 9 seemed to be more apparent than others. The first to step forward was an amusing sight. "Ivyfang, with this life, I give you appreciation." Nettlehawk touched her nose to the top of his head. Ivyfang felt a sharp pain shoot through his body. It wasn't anything he wasn't used to, though. The dark forest had taught him many things. "Appreciate your clanmates, elders especially." She gave him a hard look before turning and joining the others. A large black and white tom padded forward and peered down at him. His bright green eyes were fierce. "With this life, I give you certainty. No matter what your choice may be, so long as you truly believe in it it is the right one." Adderclaw touched Ivyfang's head and the usual pain shot through him. This one was a bit more intense than appreciation, but felt like it didn't last as long. A familiar shape limped forward after Adderclaw returned to the ranks. She reached up to touch her nose to him. "With this life, I give you compassion. Not just for your clanmates, but for the loners and rogues who seek aid." Pricklefur nodded as she pulled away. As she returned to the group, Ivyfang noticed her limp had simply been his own mind's creation. Pricklefur was much stronger now. "With this life, I give you loyalty." A solid white tom stepped forward. Wasting no time, he set his muzzle against Ivyfang's head. "Be loyal to yourself, your ideals, your clanmates." Ivyfang nodded. Moonheart had faced down his demons. The new leader saw them now. But he had overcome them. A yellow tabby tom stepped forward, passing Moonheart. "With this life, I give you trust." Yellowclaw's usually booming voice was much quieter, but still held a powerful air. "Trust in your heart and what you believe in." The next cat was one Ivyfang didn't recognize by sight, but the air the black and silver tabby tom gave off was rather familiar. "With this life, I give you wisdom." Echosong rested his muzzle on Ivyfang's head. "Take every chance you're given to learn and better yourself." Echsong back up and gave a rather disapproving look at the silver she-cat that pranced forward. She placed her nose against Ivyfang's head. "With this life, I give you the strength to do what must be done." Snowfawn backed away and gazed proudly at the kit she died to save. She had never stopped watching over him. Ivyfang dipped his head. He may not remember the she-cat well, but he knew what she had done for him. He was rather surprised by who stepped forward next. Normally a previous leader was the last to give a life. "With this life, I give you leadership." Ivyfang bowed his head to Robinstar. "Use it well to find your own voice. Make your mark on the clan and guide them well." His final life came from another black and white tom. This one, however, had the coloration of a badger. "With this life, I give you love." Badgerheart touched his nose to Ivyfang. A mixture of his own memories and the memories he shared with his former apprentice flowed alongside the only pleasant feeling Ivyfang had felt of the nine lives. No other words were needed. Badgerheart backed away slowly, his eyes shining. "I hail you by your new name, Ivystar. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants you the guardianship of Twilightclan. Defend it well; care for young and old; honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity." Ivystar glanced around him as his ancestors called his new name. And now I get to go on a feels trip with Badger
