this is genuinely stupid't but i'm just asking bc i'm not sure if this is a genuine thing or if the old white woman who wrote this textbook is just Too Woke for her own good, but would you consider wearing moccasins & turquoise cultural appropriation?? i only ask bc it's mentioned in one of my sociology textbooks and i just thought that was kinda,,, odd. like not full on crusty $3 halloween costume stereotypes for days crap, but just turquoise jewelry? or comfy af moccasins? i didn't think it was that big of a deal but i guess i could be wrong anyway ur name is fantastic I Love, sorry this is so dumb

i've been pretty intrigued by native american culture but as some who is the most white and boring person you'd ever meet, i've been afraid to ask about it ig?
i'd love to ask about the native american church! since i've been fascinated by religion. is it exclusive to only natives, or is it open to everyone? does every tribe participate in it? (the latter being a dumb question sorry lol)
also i'm glad to see a definition of cultural appropriation not just be exclusively targeting white people. it's so annoying to see that everywhere when every person on this planet can do it and be racist about it, lemme tell you.

My best friend/datemate is a quarter Native American, and I've gone with him up to their reservation for celebrations and such, and met his family that's fully Native American. My question is kind of, how do I fit in there as a 100% white person? I avoid saying anything directly about a topic I don't know about, but I also don't ask questions because I don't want to be seen as annoying and uninformed.

Is it okay if I have a native american character (I'm white) but do a lot of research and make sure to portray correctly and not stereotype? Or should I just stay away from that?

My cousin was telling me that calling Native Americans 'Indians' is offensive, because Columbus, who abused them, first gave them the name. Is this true?

@jasper i mean. they're still people, right? it really depends on how assimilated they are. what makes you nervous about them? do they behave differently than any other family you've met? if so, how? this isn't a trick question, i'm not trying to get you into any trouble : ) i'm genuinely curious about the things about them that make you nervous. but really, an all-encompassing solution would be to educate yourself. and this is what every white person needs to do, regardless of whether they're close to an indian family or not. look into residential school. read about how that region dealt with contact. what was their role in history and what kind of traumas did the community experience. of course, this wouldn't be an issue if schools informed their students about the history with the respect it deserves, but since they don't, it's up to our generation to figure it out for ourselves.
creatiine i don't know what kind of person you are so i can't say for sure haha. but if you do your research and portray them with respect, by all means. go crazy. in fact, that's probably one of the best ways to sift through all the information on the internet and pick out the pieces that are relevant to character and how our communities ended up in the state that they did. i'd also be one hundred percent open to rping a bit with you or hearing about this character. not only to help you with the unintentional offensive stuff that might be in there somehow but i also just love hearing about other people's oc's regardless :')
@leopardbreath7ate9 well. i'm not sure if this is directed to me personally and the things i personally have a problem with. or if its directed towards the things in media that are just factually incorrect and damaging. so if i don't answer your question in the next few sentences, let me know! the main thing that pisses me off is the lack of respect. ignorance breeds disrespect, only because the lack of knowledge makes it very easy to not see us as real people. if you think that dressing up as an indian for halloween is okay, that means that you think it's okay to take an entire race, full of diverse cultures, languages, and customs, and boil them down to a single character. something that can be stereotyped and molded until it entertains you. and that really covers everything i have a problem with. the 'stoic indian' character, non-indigenous people wearing headdresses, impressions that involve speaking very slowly and simply, anything that doesn't give the culture the respect it deserves, i have a problem with. of course, this doesn't mean i would be offended by a native american actress playing a character in a movie that's written to be unintelligent. it only becomes offensive when they use the fact that she is of a certain race to bolster the idea that she is unintelligent. was that too rambly? Okay, thank you so much!

I asked a question a while ago and I'm kind of going to elaborate on it.
I was there to celebrate something pertaining to their tribe, and I felt uncomfortable because I wasn't sure if they wanted me to be there. The person to invite me was my datemate, so I kind of just showed up. I didn't know if I was disrespecting them by butting in on their celebration.
And also, thank you for this thread. I read through the entire thing and now I know a lot of stuff that I should have known before, but didn't. I'm going to keep educating myself.
