a court of stars and shadows
disclaimer --
This roleplay is largely based on the book series A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas mixed with some of my own ideas. This roleplay does contain some darker, more mature themes (within PG-13 bounds), so if you think these may make you uncomfortable then please read at your own risk. Credits for the lovely layout go to the amazing Appzy.

welcome to prythian. Close your eyes and imagine: imagine a world overrun by pure, untamed nature. Colors of the richest jewel tones sprawl across every inch of the land – sparkling sapphire lakes to deep emerald forests to endless blossoming fields of amethyst and ruby and topaz. Imagine the most breathtaking vistas you can picture. Imagine that everything is simply brighter, more vibrant and intense, glowing with a faint inner light too ethereal to be described.
If you can do that, you would still only grasp a fraction of the otherworldly beauty of Prythian, for the stunning lands pale in comparison to its inhabitants: the Fair Folk. Beautiful, powerful, and ruthless, faeries rule over Prythian divided into four Courts: Dawn, Day, Twilight, and Night. Each Court is led by either a High Lord or a High Lady of strength beyond compare. The Courts themselves are beautiful, with the nobility living in grand palaces and enjoying lavish lifestyles. But of course, such luxury comes at a cost: the wonders of Prythian were built on the backs of human slaves. Helpless and weak compared to the incredible abilities of the faeries, humans have been enslaved for hundreds of years to the fae, who treat them as little more than worthless animals whose sole purpose is to please and serve.
Five years ago, an unusual blight claimed the lives of every High Lord and Lady, as well as the lives of their mates. To this day, no one has yet figured out what happened – all we know is that one night, they all passed away in their sleep. As faeries are immortal, and the High Lords and Ladies are supposed to be the four strongest in all of the land, this event came as a terrible shock, rocking Prythian to its very core. Alas, their children came to power, but now all the Courts are more unstable than ever as the new leaders struggle to gain their footing and maintain control. This devastating shift of power destabilizing all of the faerie Courts could be just what the humans need to finally secure their freedom and rights – whether through peace or revolution.
Of all the Courts, the Day Court is likely the most stable. Isabel Fairlight, the new High Lady and only child of the previous couple, was already beloved by most of her people, and there are few who would seek to challenge her rule. Isabel, though deeply saddened by her parents’ deaths, wants to take this opportunity to rebuild Prythian in a kinder image. Disturbed by the treatment of humans, she has already sought to ensure the humans in her Court are not treated so brutally, and hopes eventually to free them completely, ending slavery in all of the Courts of Prythian. Luckily for Isabel, this opinion is held by most of her Court as well.
In the Twilight Court, however, there was a great deal of dispute as to who would be the new High Lady. Raelyn and Adrianna Silverblood, the twin royal children, both had an equal claim to the throne. Eventually, an agreement was reached that a vote among the nobles of the Twilight Court would decide their next leader. By a very close vote, Adrianna was just barely chosen – much to the dismay of her sister. Though outwardly, Raelyn accepted the results of the vote, she harbors a secret desire to overthrow her sister. How she plans to do so, however, remains unknown. On the issue of human slavery, the Twilight Court is equally divided as well; some, like Adrianna, see the institution as morally wrong and wish to end it, while others, like Raelyn, want to keep it in place and see humans as unworthy of any rights.
Sebastian Fellrose assumed power in the Dawn Court with an iron grip. He certainly didn’t mourn the death of his parents, especially his father, for whom he harbored resentment from years of neglect. Sebastian’s father had an affair with a human woman who gave birth to a halfblood daughter. But it was his half-sister to whom the High Lord lavished all his affections, leading to a dark, deep-rooted jealousy and hatred of all humans in Sebastian. Worse, he doesn’t plan to stop at the Dawn Court – his strongest desire is to one day rule over all of Prythian, crushing all whispers of rebellion and revolution. To do so, however, requires allies – powerful as he is, even he couldn’t possibly hope to take over all the other Courts without some help.
And that brings us to the Night Court, which Loren Blackthorn now presides over. As ruler of the merciless, hedonistic Nightbloods, Loren of course has a rather invested interest in keeping his human slaves – without them, every foundation of his Court would crumble. Thus, Sebastian’s most likely ally lies in the dark, sexy heartbreaker Loren who seems to care for little more than himself. But the Night Court is rumored to have knowledge of some secrets best kept hidden – secrets that may be the very thing Sebastian needs to win in the brewing conflict.
The world of the Fae has long been filled with ruthless politics, court intrigue, and shadowy passions. But the mysterious deaths of all its rulers has left Prythian dangerously unstable. Everyone, human and faerie alike, can feel it in the air – change is coming, and war seems like a more looming possibility with each passing day. Choose your side carefully; there is no telling who will be left standing tomorrow. " there are those who seek me a lifetime but never we meet, and those i kiss but who trample me beneath ungrateful feet. "

the rules of the roleplay. 1. No drama outside of character. Please, we’re all just here to roleplay and have fun, so make sure it stays that way. In character, however, go crazy with the drama – the more, the better!
2. No Mary Sues, Gary Stus, godmodding, or powerplaying. This is a fantasy roleplay, so of course your characters are going to have magical powers, and faeries are supposed to be very pretty – just don’t go overboard, okay? Your character is not invincible, nor are they the most beautiful thing to ever walk the face of the Earth. But perhaps even more importantly, make sure their personalities are not perfect. Add actual flaws – if you find that your character’s only flaws are things like “shy” and “clumsy”, that’s probably not a good sign.
3. LGBTQ characters are allowed in this roleplay, of course, but please don’t force anyone into roleplaying anything they’re not comfortable with.
4. This is a darker, more mature roleplay. Obviously all content will remain PG-13, but since there are definitely some darker themes in this roleplay, if you don’t feel comfortable with them then I would not recommend joining.
5. This is an advanced roleplay, so please, try to write at least three good paragraphs per post. If that’s a length you feel you cannot easily reach, then this might not be the best roleplay for you.
6. Last but not least, remember to follow all forum rules, and of course, have fun! " at times i seem to favor the clever and the fair, but i bless all those who are brave enough to dare. "

the species of faeries. High Fae : The High Fae are the strongest of all faeries, wielding precise and deadly magic. They are human in appearance, save for their pointed ears, but they tend to possess an unnatural, ethereal beauty and subtle glow to them that further distinguishes them as unmistakably fae. High Fae may have any number of different abilities, depending on the strength of their bloodline and sometimes pure chance – though the strongest of all remain the High Lords and Ladies.
All High Fae are naturally far stronger and faster than any human, with keen reflexes and enhanced senses as well. Beyond that, however, the High Fae vary greatly in their powers, with magic ranging from elemental control to psychic abilities to many more. However, the Daemati are a particular type of High Fae who have the rarest and arguably strongest abilities of all. Daemati have the ability to walk into another person's mind. They are able to read, influence, and even shatter someone's mind, depending on their training and power, although other faeries may learn to construct mental walls to deflect a Daemati's abilities.
Nightbloods : Nightbloods are, for all intents and purposes, High Fae. The only real difference between them and the rest of the High Fae is their requirement of drinking human blood to sustain themselves. While Nightbloods are able to drink faerie blood as well, and may do so for fun, faerie blood does not actually provide any sustenance. For this purpose, they do have sharper canine teeth, though this difference is not too noticeable. But although faeries are immortal – that is, unable to be killed by old age or disease – the Nightbloods’ need for human blood can pose a serious threat to their immortality. If a Nightblood goes for too long without consuming human blood, generally a period of more than a couple weeks, their powers will start to dim significantly. After about a month without feeding, Nightbloods are left in an incredibly weakened state, until they at last slip away. Death in such a way is an extremely painful process for the Nightblood, especially by the end – and so, a death sentence by starvation is reserved for only the most terrible and deserving.
As their name implies, however, Nightbloods are found only in the Night Court. A very long time ago, this curse was placed on the Night Court – and it truly is a curse, since they can die without human blood. For as long as anyone can remember, any High Fae born to Night Court parents was born a Nightblood; it is an inescapable affliction for all of this Court. Of course, as long as human slavery is allowed in Prythian, the Nightbloods have little to worry about, since they are free to do whatever they want with the unfortunate souls in their Court. But if the slaves were to gain their freedom through whatever means, the citizens of the Night Court certainly have the most to lose.
Illyrians : Illyrians are lower ranking faeries. Unlike High Fae, they have rounded ears – but the most striking difference between Illyrians and all other species is their large, powerful wings. These wings may either be bat-like or feathered. The Illyrians are a warrior race of faeries, essentially the foot soldiers of all the Courts, considered to be more expendable than the High Fae. Their magic is also far less precise; Illyrians possess a raw, untamed killing magic, and tend to be physically stronger and faster than even the High Fae, but they do not have any specific abilities. There is a definite class division between the High Fae and the Illyrians, who are seen as lesser citizens, but they are still faeries, so their treatment is far better than that of any human’s.
Halfbloods : The term halfblood is rather vague, as it can refer to any mix of species – High Fae and Illyrian, Illyrian and human, or High Fae and human. Halfbloods are rather rare in general, as the different species tend to not mix due to their social prejudices, even though they are physically capable. High Fae and human are the most uncommon of all halfbloods, however, for rather obvious reasons, as High Fae see themselves as so above humans that a child being conceived between them is almost unheard of.
High Fae and Illyrian halfbloods are no less powerful than a pureblooded High Fae; however, they are still looked down upon for their mixed blood. They do have wings, but they can control whether or not these wings appear when they choose, unlike pure Illyrians. Illyrian and human halfbloods are essentially watered-down versions of Illyrians; they have wings and are immortal, but their magic and physical strength is considerably weaker than a pure Illyrian, though still stronger than a regular human. High Fae and human halfbloods are, similar, like watered-down High Fae; though they are immortal, they possess very little magic.
Humans : Humans are humans – not much description beyond that seems necessary. They fill all sorts of occupations, the jobs that faeries see themselves as too good to do, but in general they are servants or laborers, the ones who keep faerie society running. But although they outnumber faeries by a good deal, they still stand little chance against their far more powerful strength and magic.
" by large, my ministrations are soft-handed and sweet, but scorned, i become a difficult beast to defeat. "

the faeries and their powers. Below is a list of all the exclusive powers currently in use in this roleplay. These are the abilities that vary from faerie to faerie. For clarification, specific powers can be taken by multiple characters. However, this list is simply here so that we can try to keep characters with similar powers to a minimum. Powers will be accepted on a case-by-case basis, but try to limit your High Fae characters to one or two powers each (with the exception of High Lords and Ladies); more than that will require a lot of convincing and a good reason. You can also feel free to suggest additions of powers not on this list, and I will consider allowing them.
• shapeshifting - 1 • fire elemental - 1 • water elemental - 1 • air elemental - 1 • earth elemental - 1 • lightning elemental - 1 • shadow manipulation - 0 • light manipulation - 0 • winnowing (teleportation) - 1 • glamouring/invisibility - 1 • shadowsinger (able to sense things others can't) - 1 • telekinesis - 0 • daemati (mind influence) - 0 • healing - 0 • animal communication - 0 • clairvoyance - 1 • more to be added

“I still don’t see why I have to go. I never have before.”
Kalina crossed her arms indignantly, tossing dark chocolate curls over her shoulder as she fixed her half-brother with her best death glare.
Sebastian made a face that seemed to say he was trying very, very hard not to strangle her to death at that moment. “Because, Kalina,” he bit out, “I am your High Lord, and I say you have to go. So you’re going. If you don’t, I might just have to break one of those delicate little halfblood bones - I wonder how long that will take to heal?”
Kalina swallowed nervously, clenching her hands into fists, but her liquid gold gaze remained unflinching. “But why? I’m just a shameful stain on the Dawn Court’s reputation - everyone in this damn court knows it. So why all of a sudden do you want to show me off to the world?” She knew she was playing a dangerous game pushing him this far, but wondering why he had decided to let her go - no, force her to go the celebration that night - had been driving her crazy enough that she was willing to risk pissing him off.
Sebastian tilted his head, blinking innocently at her. Of course, Sebastian could pull off innocent about as well as a hungry wolf. “Maybe I’m just trying to make things right between us, little sis. Maybe I want to put the past behind us and start over. Is that so hard to believe?” he asked, his tone dripping with sugary sweet venom.
“Oh, please. Don't make me laugh. Tell me what you’re planning, or I am not going to your stupid party,” Kalina warned in as threatening a voice she could manage, taking a step closer. Sebastian laughed, the effect of the petite girl trying to intimidate him especially comical given that she was a full seven inches shorter and he had to look down at her from this close.
“Yeah, not happening. And you’re going to the celebration, or you and I having our own little party afterwards that won’t be nearly as fun for you,” he said in far too bright a tone for such a grim promise. Sebastian paused, an almost contemplative look on his sharply handsome features. “Or maybe I’ll bring out some of your human servants as entertainment. A shame, that they had the misfortune of being assigned to you. I’m sure I could make their screams last for hours. Wouldn’t that be fun to watch, Kalina?”
A chilling cold danced over Kalina’s skin, icy fingers running down her spine at the mental images his words conjured. Sebastian knew just where to hit her, of course, and she loathed him for it - threatening her own safety rarely worked, but threatening to hurt others for her own disobedience always left her with no choice but to back down.
Sebastian’s grin was nothing short of feral as he took in her horrified expression, reveling in the triumph of seeing his sister’s golden eyes wide and her lips slightly parted, shocked and speechless. The High Lord of Dawn turned, adding cheerfully without so much as a glance back as he walked away, “I left a dress for you in your room. Oh, and make sure to put your hair up. You look prettiest like that.”
--
Kalina wore her hair down - deep, chocolate brown curls flowed elegantly down to her bare mid-back, the meticulous handiwork of her current human maids, two young girls who couldn’t have been more than sixteen or seventeen. She calculated that it was the only act of rebellion small enough for her to get away with without any backlash. Unfortunately, she figured that refusing to wear the dress her brother had selected would indeed incur his wrath, leaving her no choice but to obey his wishes.
Cool air brushed teasingly against every inch of her exposed flesh, of which there was no small amount; her dress left far too little to the imagination. The bodice was of a pale, sheer gossamer through which a liberal amount of olive skin could be seen, studded scarcely with glittering crystals of soft gold and opalescent hues that coalesced at the top, just barely covering everything that needed to be covered. A sweetheart neckline accentuated her lithe but acceptably curvaceous figure, held up by two thin straps that eventually met in a V at her lower back, just below her waist. Light gold satin that made up the skirt cinched at her hips, running all the way up to just below her chest on one side in a sort of triangular shape, while a slit ran up the other side of the dress all the way to her hips. More sheer bejeweled gossamer covered this slit, but the graceful curve of her long legs could still be seen.
As a final touch, a swirled diadem of light gold crowned her head, accented with small jewels cut into the shape of seven-pointed stars. It was the only part of her ensemble that she herself had picked out, for its presence lent her at least a hint of power and dignity, even though the rest of her looked like a demon god’s plaything. Kalina knew that everything Sebastian did was deliberate. She could only guess at the reason why he had chosen to dress her up like a harlot - but she knew with certainty that whatever it was, it couldn’t be anything good. Perhaps, if tainted blood didn't flow in her veins, she would be suspicious that Sebastian was trying to auction her off for some political reason, hoping to secure his power as the new High Lord by buying loyal allies. But as it was, no respectable High Fae would ever take her as their bride, no matter how stunning she looked. So she was left wracking her brain for an explanation, but even with hours to contemplate her brother's unusual actions, she had yet to come up with anything.
Lost in thought, Kalina approached the large glass doors that led to the celebration outside, only to startle when a hand suddenly grabbed her arm, spinning her around roughly. But her surprise quickly dissipated when she came face to face with Sebastian, an icy mask settling over her features as she took in his vulpine smile. He looked darkly elegant compared to her soft radiance - where she was adorned in gold, he wore a simple black suit layered over a navy blue satin shirt, though subtle golden embroidery snaked around the cuffs of his sleeves. She embodied the light of dawn; he was the darkness just before it. Yet no one would mistake them for anything but siblings, with those strange, matching brilliant gold eyes and the cold, fierce pride that flickered in both of them. In some ways, they were more alike than either of them would have cared to admit.
“There you are. I’ve been waiting for you. I thought it would be nice if we made our entrance together.” He paused and released her arm, his gaze running up and down her body before his lips curled into a small frown. “You would’ve looked better with your hair up. Oh, well, too late now. Shall we?”
Kalina breathed a small sigh of relief, reluctantly placing her hand in the crook of his arm that he held out for her, and allowed him to lead her outside. “Late for your own party just for me? I’m flattered,” she taunted as they reached the top of a small staircase that looked out over the beautifully decorated gardens. But just at that moment, the clamoring voices of the party seemed to dim all at once, hundreds of glittering faerie eyes all turning to stare at the royal siblings. Kalina’s breath caught in her throat under the scrutinizing weight of their gazes, all too aware of what that awful cruelty and hunger on their faces as they surveyed her meant. More than ever, Kalina became acutely aware of how weak, how fragile she was compared to the powerful High Fae.
Sebastian leaned in to whisper lowly in her ear, “Ah, but what better way to make an entrance?”
--
It was a tradition dating back many centuries that a grand celebration be held once every five years at one of the courts. It so happened that the first celebration following the mysterious deaths of the previous rulers fell to the Dawn Court, and Sebastian made sure to spare no expense for displaying the incredible wealth and strength of both his court and himself.
The celebration was scheduled to begin at midnight and last until the dawn itself, for of course, nowhere in Prythian was the sunrise more spectacular. Although the sky was currently blanketed in night and glimmering stars, the gardens were lit up brilliantly with white-gold crystals infused with magic that made them glow from within. These crystals were strung through ribbons of all different pale hues that were hung from the marble pillars scattered throughout the gardens, mimicking the colors of the dawn - pale blues, violets, and pinks. The flowers themselves were their own sight to behold, petals of all colors made ever more beautiful under the soft light of the moon.
A large, circular clearing covered with marble tiles provided the center stage for the event, where the fae could dance and mingle and down sparkling faerie wine under the stars. But a pair of faeries wishing to get away for a bit of privacy could venture off into the tall hedges, hidden amongst flowers to do whatever they pleased.
Sebastian was far from blind to the numerous lustful gazes that followed him as he weaved through the throng of faeries. Even as the heir to the throne, he had always received a good deal of female attention, but now more than ever, many were eager to win the favor of their new and single High Lord. A faint smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth as he nodded polite greetings to the faeries he passed. Unfortunately, however, Sebastian doubted he would have the time to sneak away with a pretty fae girl, as he used to do at these events. No - tonight, he had far more important business to attend to. As he made his way to the center of the party with Kalina on his arm, his golden eyes scanned the crowds for one face in particular.
At last, Sebastian halted, pulling his sister closer to him to murmur, "I'm afraid this is where I have to leave you. Enjoy the party, little sis." He took only a moment to delight in the unconcealed fear etched on her face; before she had a chance to protest, he slipped off into the crowds. Though Sebastian did have other plans for her, he was quite content to throw her to the wolves for a little bit and let her squirm. But first, he had to actually find the faerie he was searching for - the High Lord of the Night Court. Sebastian had waited nearly two hundred years for this, but finally, everything seemed to be falling into place. If all went according to plan tonight, he would be killing two birds with one stone.

Livia was bored.
She twirled a glass filled with pale, sparking gold liquid absentmindedly in her hand, watching the light shining from the crystal lanterns reflect off of the surface, and breathed a soft sigh from her rogue-painted lips. She was dying to do something. Anything. Shivers of electricity prickled along her skin, down every inch of her restless limbs. If Isabel and Adrianna talk, make sure you’re listening, Sebastian had said to the Shadowsinger, hours earlier. But keep an eye on Kalina in the meantime. And what Sebastian ordered, Livia did. But that didn’t mean that she was pleased with her current assignment, which sounded to her a lot like she was to be some glorified babysitter. And she was even less pleased that Sebastian had refused to tell her what was so important that he was planning to do tonight. Certainly he knew that she was trustworthy; she had vowed to serve him for life. So she simply couldn’t wrap her head around the idea that there was something he hadn’t wanted to tell her – at least not yet. Later, he assured her. Only that had done little to ease her frustration.
So for the past half hour Livia had lingered at the edge of the main circle, soaking in the tension and excitement of the celebration with her enhanced senses, listening carefully for the voices of the two High Ladies. But so far, nothing. Sebastian himself hadn’t even arrived yet; she didn’t feel the ripple of power in the air that she recognized familiarly as his.
The halfblood took a small sip from her glass, swirling the delicious faerie wine around in her mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. Though she would have liked to down the whole thing, this special type of faerie wine reserved only for celebrations was known for its powerful “freeing” effect, and Livia simply couldn’t afford to dull her senses and lose herself to blissful oblivion. But it did taste wonderful – and it was a party. So she figured a little couldn’t hurt, and would at least help her blend in.
To her relief, no one had worked up enough courage to approach her yet. Livia was sure it had nothing to do with lack of beauty; her strapless, bloodred satin gown hugged her ribbon-slim body tightly at the waist, giving her the semblance of a far more curvaceous figure than she actually bore. But she had traded the innocence of the soft, loose waves of honey-gold she usually wore for a style of a braided crown, and her lovely face was carefully composed in a regal but cold mask. Smokey shadows painted her lids, complementing her icy turquoise eyes, which were lined with ebony kohl swept out in sharp, bold lines at the corners. Around her neck was a simple gold chain, from which a stunning seven-pointed star-shaped pendant cut from glittering ruby hung just above her cleavage. The symbol of the Dawn Court; and a present from its High Lord himself.
Suddenly, silence fell over the crowd all at once, everyone’s attention turned to the pair of faeries who stood at the top of the steps leading from the palace down into the gardens. Sebastian and Kalina. Livia couldn’t keep her lips from quirking upward into a faint smirk. Of course - how very like Sebastian, she thought, to show up late for his own party to make a dramatic entrance.
Curiosity stirred in her chest at his decision to enter with his half-sister, however; it made quite the bold statement, to say the least. And it was very interesting, considering that as one of his closest courtiers, Livia had the privilege of knowing how Sebastian really felt about Kalina. She had been surprised that the little halfblood was even going to the celebration in the first place. Before Varian’s death, she had been kept secret from the rest of the courts for the shame and scandal of her existence. Quite frankly, Livia was more than a little surprised that Kalina was even alive at this point. As soon as Sebastian became High Lord, she had honestly assumed that his first move with his newfound power would be to torture his sister to death in some terribly gruesome way. Yet five years had passed now, and alive she remained. And now, Sebastian wanted to parade her around on his arm to the nobility of all the courts. Curioser and curioser.
But Livia knew Sebastian, knew that this was a calculated move; and it bothered her that she didn’t know why. Yet another secret she could add to the list of things Sebastian had been keeping from her recently.
Speaking of siblings – Livia started to wonder what Rafe was up to. Surely he must have been given an assignment for the celebration as well, but as she hadn’t spoken to him yet today, she didn’t know what. Oh, well. She needed to focus on her own task now: keeping an eye on Kalina.
Livia honed in her enhanced senses on the royal siblings as they moved through the throng of faeries. She heard Sebastian murmur to his sister in a low voice that he had to leave, and watched as he abandoned his sister to the crowd of High Fae. She could almost taste the eagerness in the air, the desire to close in on this strange girl whom they had never seen before, yet who had just entered with the High Lord of the Dawn Court himself. And she could definitely sense Kalina’s terror at being left alone among all those faeries.
Under different circumstances, Livia might have allowed herself to pity the other halfblood. In a way, they were kindred spirits. She could see a bit of herself in Kalina; that is, the young, vulnerable self who also faced the malicious prejudice of pureblooded High Fae. She could only imagine that their hatred for Kalina was even worse; after all, she was half-human, far worse than her own half-Illyrian blood. But Sebastian had saved her from their savagery; she owed him her life, and for that, she couldn’t afford to sympathize with his sister. It would be a betrayal of the worst kind. Besides, she could understand why Sebastian loathed her; perhaps it wasn’t her fault, but Varian did give her the love and affection to which he never gave his legitimate son. Though Sebastian and Kalina's relationship served to make Livia all the more thankful that as for her own brother, they loved each other more than anything. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like to hate your own blood.
Livia took another tiny sip from her wine. At any rate, hopefully the night would start to get more interesting now.

》She really is, though!
I actually have a question concerning powers. Would it be alright to give one of my characters Clairvoyance (the ability to predict the future)? Of course, it wouldn't be a power that worked all the time for them or is reliable when it does work. I was thinking it would be more like fortune telling.《
