[ short post, sorry. ]
"You sound as though I'd even consider going in there before you redecorate it to my exact standards," Eira replied, once again holding herself back from saying something she'd regret. She even forced a light teasing note into her voice, some kind of compromise. She didn't want to find herself abandoned at sea - not because leaving this ship would mean death but because it would entail months of searching for a ship to take her on. She'd do what she could to stay.
"Polite sensibilities," she scoffed, though she nodded for him to lead the way if he so wished. "More like responsible reservations." He took her for someone much more innocent than she, she realised. Of course he did. Why else would she possibly turn down his advances with anger and indignancy rather than apologetic weeping? Clearly, there was no other reason. To be fair, he had no idea of how she felt about him, but still. How inflated must his ego be?

"Ginger relax," Charles said rolling his eyes at the girl. "It's not as though you're my type." It was a combination of a truth and a lie to be honest. She was pretty in not your stereotypical way with her red hair and symmetrical face and she was certainly different to any girl that he'd ever really met before but whilst she did seem to hate him enough he didn't have that spark in her which the girls he was actually attracted to have--that didn't mean he wouldn't turn her down were she to come knocking but it meant he wouldn't go out of his way.
Hearing the last thing that the girl said Charles scoffed. She might pride herself on her 'responsible reservations' but as far as Charles thought they were just a bit of a waste of time considering that regardless of whatever she had been through before nowadays she was on a ship which was more than half male and they would be living under the same roof for over a month and if she got so annoyed by his taunts and jokes he didn't get how she'd cope throughout the voyage before some guy who wasn't as nice about her rudeness as Charles was would take his anger out on her and then she wouldn't be so pretty.
Presuming that the girl would be following him Charles strode off weaving through the various corridors easily choosing the right turn offs with scarcely a thought about where he was actually going but when he looked up he realised that he was heading upwards to the deck and even though he knew he should continue on with the tour below deck he didn't change his direction and instead continued up to the deck.
((No worries--I'm rlly tired so I might go to bed soon))

[alright, thanks for the heads up c: if you don't mind me asking, what time is it where you are? it's half eleven here (pm). ]
"Eira. Not Ginger," Eira said without pause, immediately terrified that the name had stuck. She wasn't the kind of person who hated nicknames, but she hated any nickname this man could give her. It was no fault of the nickname, if someone had given to her out of a place of affection, she'd have treasured it, but rather of him, and she so wished she could tell him that.
He scoffed, once again misunderstanding her sharp retorts to anything flirty - joke or not - he said. Had it been anyone else, she might have replied with a flirty quip of her own. She was no prude, believe it or not. She enjoyed a tension-laden conversation as much as the next girl. But the fact that he, specifically, was saying them, and that he might have once said similar things to Nieve, made her prickly and sour. She didn't want the imprint of his words on her mind, much less the imprint of him on her skin, and she could not make that clear enough.
She thought about this as she followed him up onto the deck, not bothering to hide her frown. He'd misinterpret that, just like he misinterpreted everything else, and she'd be fine. She's cemented herself as an angry and unapproachable girl, not a scared and unaccustomed mermaid, and that was all she had to do today. Befriending the crew came tomorrow.

Charles struggled to hide his smile when he found out the name of the red haired girl. He couldn't help but feel like he recognised that name but he couldn't remember exactly why nor pair a face to the mysterious Eira that he remembered. Besides whilst the name Eira wasn't exactly one of the most common names out there it was more than likely that he'd encountered another Eira in his lifetime who he was remembering.
"I prefer Ginger," Charles said dryly after a few seconds of silent walking through the corridors the only sounds other than their voices being the bustling of the other pirates who were on the ship both below or above deck and the sound of his boots colliding with the wooden planks with every step that he took. Charles spun the plain gold ring around on his middle finger bored as he walked. He only ever fiddled with it when he was either bored or nervous and was one of the few ways that someone who knew him well would be able to tell what he was thinking regardless of his face expressed.
He took his hat off as he re-entered the bright sunlight and instead placing a hand to shield his eyes from the bright light so that they wouldn't be affected by the blinding sunlight. Stepping onto the deck he could see where the boat was still docked in the harbour. They'd be leaving in the middle of the night as the two weeks that they had already stayed docked here for were too long.
((Sorry it took me so long))

[ not to worry! ]
Of course he did. Eira scowled, which probably didn't help her cause, but said nothing. She could put up with some nicknames from a man she despised, couldn't she? Of course she could. For Nieve, she'd walk on hot coals for the remained of her life. This was nothing by comparison, and she should stop complaining and just suck it up. That wasn't going to happen, but she could pretend this pep talk would have any kind of effect.
"So, where's this ship headed?" she asked as they stepped back onto the deck, her hand moving to shield her eyes in moments. She wasn't used to the sunlight yet. Her eyes were made to see deep underwater, not above it, and she still found herself blinded by it. Like coming out of a dark box and into midday sun, it stung for a few minutes every time she set foot in direct sunlight. Another thing she wasn't sure she'd ever not have to deal with.
The deck was emptier than the cabins and corridors had been, but even here there were over a dozen people. Eira realised, not for the first time, that she'd have a hard time getting time to herself here. That would make planning something difficult, but not impossible. Besides, she wouldn't mind getting to know these people. The ones that seemed friendly, at least.

"I don't know," Charles said honestly in an airy without looking back at Eira if that was what she was called. He made a point of never deciding where they would go until they had officially taken off as he so to speak liked living on the edge. Additionally until he was on the sea and could feel the waves rushing underneath the ship casting it up and down slightly, smelt the sea breeze and couldn't see dry land even with a telescope.
He turned back now to face Eira who was standing on the deck shielding her eyes much like him and added in a low voice, "Don't tell anyone though they'd kill me if they found out I didn't have a plan for treasure." He accompanied this with a cheery wink and a sunny smile which revealed that he was kidding at least mostly. He knew that if they found out that they weren't heading anywhere or had the voyage planned out the less loyal of his pirates would probably not kill him but they would probably abandon ship and replace him as captain for someone else.
He couldn't help but smile as he looked around the large deck with the few pirates that were on the deck with some satisfaction. This was Charles's kingdom so to speak and especially when they were on the sea his word was law.

When he wasn't smirking but genuinely smiling, Charles looked like a different person. It was disorienting for a moment, but not so much that Eira wavered in her convictions of him. Not for a heartbeat. But, she did return it with a small, amused smile of her own - not genuine but close enough that he wouldn't be able to tell. She supposed she should encourage friendliness in him instead of whatever he'd been displaying earlier.
"Your secret's safe," she assured him, and it was. This was good for her, actually, because even if he didn't have a target she did. She couldn't bring it up now, not here, but she would bring it up. She'd create an opportunity and suggest it casually, as though it were exciting but not really a big deal, and then she'd get to planning a way to get the gold off the ship. There was no way she was letting Charles have it.
She walked up to the side of the boat facing away from the dock. Looking out over the sea, she could almost pretend she were out on it and not here, chained to the land. She watched it lap against the ship, sighing happily. "So, what are the rules on board? What do I need to do to keep myself from dying an early death?" she asked, not looking away from the ocean.

As Eira finally actually smiled at him for the first time Charles felt a faint sense of relief as she displayed some actual emotion other than anger for the first time since he had met her not even two hours ago. He knew many hard pirates and the like but this girl until now had only really displayed one feeling and that was pure unadulterated hatred but he hadn't been sure whether that was hatred was directed at him which didn't make sense considering they had only just met or just a general thing which she felt for some reason which was out of his control.
He walked over to where Eira was standing and leant his back against the railings beside her. His long blonde hair which was no longer fettered by his pirate hat was swept back and forth by the passing breezes and he brushed the longer sun bleached strands out of his face but within seconds they had already reverted to their earlier position and Charles this time left it alone allowing them to partially obstruct his vision without touching it.
"Well," He said a devilish smile crossing his face along with a mischievous glint. "As a newbie you have to wake up before the more experienced pirates and provide food for any of them which are in your cabin, if you see or talk to a pirate either with an eyepatch or a wooden leg you should tap your head three times as a way of expressing your respect to them and the fact that they have survived and finally you must always speak with respect to your captain or you'll receive punishment.

( ahh, alright, thanks! I can totally see it. )
Eira couldn't help but laugh. She'd been doing nothing but speaking disrespectfully to the captain since she first arrived on the ship, and so far all she'd gotten for her trouble were some uncomfortable insinuations and a nickname she hated. If that was the extent of the punishment, she wasn't sure she'd ever stop with her lack of respect.
"That last one will be difficult," she said, and though her words were sincere the tone she applied to them suggested some kind of teasing joke. It wasn't anything of the kind, it was a warning. Not that he'd ever know. She could only hope he'd assume she spoke like this to everyone which, really, wasn't too far from the truth, and not that she despised him, which was entirely true. Once again she reminded herself that it didn't matter. If he tried to kill her, it would be as simple as diving into the water.
She stared down at the water, letting the waves take her anxieties, if only for a moment. "Anything else?" she challenged, needing to hear all the rules laid out. Besides, this made her appear willing to learn and to follow the rules, which usually made her appear more friendly. Now that she knew she had an opening, she needed to create an opportunity, too, so that she could finally get to bring her sister's things back home.

Charles couldn't help but smile as he heard Eira's response to his joke. It almost made it look like Eira had a sense of humour which was something that Charles had expected from her as she had until now seemed as hard as nails but at least now Charles knew that she was somewhat human which was always a good thing when you were stuck on a ship with someone for possibly months.
"Well," Charles said pushing the ring around on his finger as he leant back further against the railings putting more of his weight onto the railing. "In all seriousness," he began as he started to answer Eira's question about the rules whilst being completely serious this time as prior to this he had been joking about the rules than he had made up though the third of them all had actually been true you didn't disrespect the captain without risking punishment. Charles hadn't taken action against Eira because of two reasons, one she was amusing to annoy and two if he punished everyone who'd said something rude to him off the cuff he wouldn't have a crew.
"So, no fighting on board ship, no gambling with cards and dice on board ship, no women on board ship," he said with a bored expression as he counted rules on his finger. He paused for a second in his list on the last one. "That's the one I don't like but you'll have to be careful because many of my pirates don't like that rule." He pursed his lips as he tried to remember the rest before listing the last five rules that he could remember. Besides it was a pirate ship he knew from his own experience that rules were more guidelines than strictly enforced facts.

So he'd been joking? Good to know. The tapping of the head did seem ridiculous looking back on it. If Eira had a sense of humour, maybe she'd have noticed. But at least she'd laughed, that should mean that she'd caught on, right? No matter how clueless she was, she knew that was the correct response to a joke. And he hadn't seemed offended or put out, so she'd say that she pulled that one off.
"It seems you're breaking at least one of those rules," Eira commented, gesturing to a group of women on the other side of the deck. Not to mention that she, herself, was clearly not a man. She wondered why he'd decided to do that, break a rule so well known it had become superstition. Not that she wanted to bring it into question, she couldn't do that without risking her place here. And all the other women here had a reason to stay, too. She couldn't put their livelihood in jeopardy just because she was curious. Then again, Charles clearly knew what he was doing. He didn't need her to point it out.
[ short post, sorry. they'll get longer soon, hopefully. ]

"Well if you hadn't guessed it I'm a bit of a rule breaker," His voice was low almost conspiratorial as though he was imparting great wisdom onto her and his flashing eyes made it difficult for anyone to guess whether he was being serious as he turned his head so he faced her their faces a matter of inches away. He stayed in that position frozen for a few seconds before pushing himself off the railings.
"I've always hated being conventional," his voice was now loud enough to grant some looks but he knew no one would think to much of this conversation,It's not like it was a new thing that their captain was talking to a girl on board the ship. He spun round from where he was standing before putting his pirate cap back on which he'd removed only a few minutes ago with a theatrical flair which was necessary for any pirate worth their salt to master as being a pirate was one half looks and behaviour and the other half the actual violence, sailing and treasure.
He looked around to see that the sun was lower in the sky and whilst it wasn't sunset quite yet it was only a matter of hours until it was and then he'd be able to finally set sail. There was nothing like the first night you slept on ship after a stay on land as the rocking of the boat was more sleep inducing than any lullaby his mother had sung to him as a small child.
((No worries--I might go off in like half an hour or so))

Eira forced herself not to move away when he turned to face her. She could do this, she reminded herself. She'd handled her anger well, so far. She'd made it seem as though her anger was what had driven her onto this boat, not what was threatening to drive her off it. She'd even smiled at her sister's murderer. She could stand to be this close enough to him for a few seconds. She had to.
Still, when he moved away, she couldn't help but feel as though a great weight had been lifted off of her. It was all she could do not to sigh and slump down. Instead she simply shrugged, as if that was enough of an answer for her, and turned back to watch the ocean.
It was strange, she thought, to be so close to it yet so entirely separated. Only feet away her home was waiting for her yet she couldn't even touch it. So she touched the gold band around her arm instead, letting the only thing she had of the sea remind her of it, even as she stared at it.
[ alright, thanks for letting me know c: also, for some background, the magic of the bangle works with water. so as long as the metal of it is dry, she has legs, but if she takes it off or gets it wet, she has a tail again. that means things like rain are difficult, but she can make it work by wearing long sleeved shirts and such. swimming - not so much. ]

He couldn't help but smile and his eyes shone the same colour as the sea with the light from the sun which was only an hour or so away from setting bouncing off it, reflecting the slight light. He looked around his boat with some satisfaction. More pirates had come up here from below the decks and as he watched them bustling along the decks he felt something akin to pride swell inside of him. There was nothing more reassuring than watching the other pirates going about their daily lives and even watching a pair of massive nigh on identical pirates one with a wooden leg the other a eye patch argue couldn't dent his happiness as it wouldn't be a proper pirate ship without the odd argument.
