apotheosis: n. the perfect form or example of something; alternatively, the elevation of someone to divine status; deification.
Throughout the history of human civilization, human beings have not been satisfied with what they were given. Development of increasingly innovative technology elevated humanity to the point that humans considered themselves to be god-like. They had solved most the problems that plagued previous generations. Genetically modified crops grew in sprawling greenhouses where every environmental factor was controlled to produce the maximum possible yield, and no one went hungry. New therapies made diseases that had once been a death sentence manageable, and preventable illnesses stopped killing millions each year. Tensions between nations faded as lack of resources became a thing of the past, and wars became rarer and rarer. Famine, pestilence, and war were no more. Only one enemy remained: death.
Death was one of the few constants in life. No one could envision a world without it. It was an unfortunate truth that people accepted because there was no alternative. Then someone found a way to cheat death.
Deterioration of the human body was unavoidable. No matter how sophisticated medicine became, there was no way to make the body immortal. But what about the mind? If you had the option of transferring your mind to a different body and could repeat this process indefinitely, you became effectively immortal. And if you could keep a backup copy outside of the body, the only consequence of physical death would be losing a few memories.
Enter psych chips, the miracle that tore the world apart. You could download your mind and store it, making yourself effectively immortalβfor a price. The moment news of this stunning new discovery was announced, people were fighting tooth and nail to get rid of their own mortality. Now that there was another way, no one wanted to die, but it was impracticable to grant immortality to the entire human race. In the end, wealth determined who had access to the new technology. The utopia crumbled. Class divides grew more prominent with time, as the wealthy never stopped accumulating wealth and it grew increasingly difficult for the rest of humanity to catch up.
The discovery of psych chips happened a long, long time ago, although some of the creators are still around. The world is now divided into immortales, the undying elite, and finitissium, the finite ones. Immortales live luxurious lives, isolated from the squalor the rest of humanity is subjected to. Finitissium live in slums and are often unable to access even the most basic technology, like electricity. One echelon of society ascended to something like godhood and the rest were left to their short, meaningless lives.
Until recently, that is. A small group called Requiem has formed with the goal of killing these new gods. Deicide is no simple task, but they've found a way to use psych chips against the immortales. When the correct safety precautions are overrode, the chips can be used to overwrite the mind of the person using them and replace it with a previously stored consciousness. This process of taking over a body is colloquially referred to as hijacking, and it is the primary weapon of this revolutionary organization.

Apotheosis is an advanced small group roleplay. As with all roleplays of this size, it's important that members be active enough to keep the plot progressing. Please be sure you have enough time to regularly post here before you join. My life is pretty hectic right now, and it would be be hypocritical of me to demand all members be posting constantly. A decently sized roleplay post every few days is what I expect. Even if you don't have time to type up a reply, chatting is nice! We can still talk about plot or character development, or just have nice conversations. I want everyone to have a nice time here, even if the roleplay doesn't get very far. And in the interest of everyone enjoying themselves, I would greatly appreciate it if you would tell me you don't have time for this particular roleplay instead of ditching. It makes my life much easier, and I promise I won't be mad at you.
When I say this is an advanced roleplay, I mean I expect everyone in it to be capable of writing posts that are 600-800 words long. Longer posts are also acceptable! I sometimes write well over a thousand words if I have a lot to talk about. The posts you write should also be easy for people to reply to. A thousand plus words is no better than a one-liner if your character is impossible to interact with. I also encourage people to come up with new lore and plots! Just make sure it doesn't conflict with previously written information or force another person's character to behave in a certain way. Follow standard roleplay etiquetteβdon't try to control characters other than your own, don't play your character as having more knowledge than they would reasonably have, and so on.
Your characters should be reasonable for the setting. Most of the group will be more attractive than average, simply because immortales value beauty very highly and members of Requiem are almost never in their original bodies unless they are very new, but other characters probably won't be fawning over them. Each character is skilled in a specific area, but few, if any, of them have formal training. Sometimes they will make mistakes. Flawed characters are much more interesting to play than perfectly infallible characters. Also, please remember that it's unlikely that characters in such a small group will be incredibly similar to each other. They have a common goal of fighting the immortales, but come from different backgrounds and may have vastly different motives. As far as character relationships go, they need to be able to work together in a group, but they definitely do not have to like each other or get along.

All characters in Apotheosis are part of Requiem, a finitissium revolutionary group. They are only a small part of the organization and can function independently of it, although they receive orders and necessary supplies from the organization. It is unlikely that any of them besides the leader know Requiem members outside of the group, as the organization relies heavily on secrecy to keep from being destroyed. What members of the group do know is they are not alone. Many people want to get rid of the immortales and are willing to do almost anything to accomplish their goal. Hijackings have been occurring across the world, but they are most frequent in the city Felovat, where our particular group is located. There is a good chance one of Requiem's headquarters is located in Felovat and that there are other branches working alongside them, but this isn't certain.
The chance a Requiem member getting rescued if they are caught by law enforcement is incredibly low, so not being found is the only guaranteed way to stay alive. Important group operations take place underground, literally. They use a derelict collection of tunnels formerly used for transportation and city maintenance to get around the city unnoticed. The tunnels are difficult to navigate, especially for the newer members. Some passages have caved in and are impossible to get through and there is the occasional metal door that proves impossible to open. Most assume these lead to unknown parts of the labyrinth, but, as of now, no one has been able to find out. Unobtrusive metal hatches connect the tunnel system to the street above. Most exits lead to back alleys, abandoned warehouses, or apartment complex basements. A few open up into immortales gardens, which makes planning large scale hijackings much easier. After a hatch is used during an escape attempt or illegal activity that is likely to be investigated, it is locked from the inside and marked with a "COMPROMISED" stickers that alert group members not to use it.
In the center of the labyrinth of tunnels is the group's headquarters. It is quite small and not all that impressive, but it only needs to fit six people at any given time. There is a main room in which the group is briefed on meetings and may spend time during the day if they have nowhere else to beβit's surprisingly comfortable, since it doubles as a storage space for all the large items that have been stolen from immortales estates. There are quite a few smaller storage rooms in the vicinity that can be locked. Half a dozen rooms have been set aside so that group members can have their own private rooms. All of them have above ground living spaces, but there's no guarantee your house won't be broken into. There are two fully functional restrooms, each of which has a shower and hot and cold water. No one quite knows why they were first built, but no one is going to complain about it either. Finally, there is a lab, where the psych chips are kept. A curtained off corner of the room is where the original bodies of the members are stored. The seemingly lifeless bodies are pretty terrifying to look at (thus, the curtain), but most people want the option of returning to their original body if they do live to see the immortales ousted. The headquarters is powered by three generators in total, one main power source and two backups, as the life support systems for the original bodies will fail if the power goes out.
The psych chips are the main weapon Requiem has, so understanding the basic premise of how they work is essential. The chips themselves are quite small and are usually kept in the device used to insert them. The chip is inserted via a tiny syringe and attaches to a major nerve, most commonly the ulnar nerve in the hand, as it is not difficult to access. The brain is electrically stimulated for a brief moment as the scan takes place. Vital functions continue as normal, but the person will experience something similar to having an absence seizure and will have no memory of the past few seconds. Post-download confusion is common, and it is best to be sitting down or otherwise supported while using a psych chip, as there's a substantial risk that you will fall if you attempt to use the chip while standing. Psych chips used by Requiem have been stripped of their normal safety measures so they can be used in hijacking, so abnormal effects may occur.

the leader -- diomedes [ the person responsible for keeping the group from falling apart. also: the main reason everyone isn't dead yet. they have been with requiem the longest and are currently the only member with the ability to contact the founder. ] [ description of how they feel about other group members -- subject to change, will be written as people join ]
the technician -- apollo [ one of the early members, and easily the person with the most knowledge on how psych chips and other advanced technologies work. without their expertise, the entire group would have to rely on luck to perform successful hijackings. ] [ -- ]
the thief -- open [ a small time criminal who has moved on to bigger and better things: primarily, robbing immortals blind because requiem has limited funds and doesn't pay well. they are deeply familiar with most kinds of illicit activities. ] [ -- ]
the assassin -- hades [ the one who gets rid of people who threaten the group. how they got so good at killing people is a question better left unanswered, although they're quick to point out that it's technically not murder if your target is an immortal. ] [ -- ]
the medic -- claimed [ not actually a medical doctor, but the best thing a penniless group of revolutionaries could hope to get. responsible for keeping their teammates from pushing their new bodies to the point of breakdown, along with keeping track of the effect frequent, unregulated body switching has on the mind. ] [ -- ]
the double agent -- tisiphone [ don't worry, they're trustworthy enough. they aren't an immortal, although they have plenty of contacts who are. if you need to get into an exclusive party or hear the latest gossip, they're the person you want. ] [ -- ]

the leader
Diomedes / Andromache Pachis / 30 yrs old / genderfluid / demisexual
self-assured -- serious -- reserved [ Diomedes isn't particularly fond of their current form, but you can't be choosy when you're stealing other people's bodies. In their personal opinion, they look way too much like they just came from an immortales rave. They have straight, waist length hair that is in a constant state of disarray because they simply do not have access to the styling products the former owner of the body used to make it look nice. Most of it is an odd lavender greyβthe color used to be brighter, but persistent washing has made it much less vibrantβand black is beginning to show at the roots. The rest of their appearance is far less outlandish: dark brown monolid eyes, a wiry frame, and the sort of sharp, well-defined features immortales like so much. The new body is not particularly tall at 5'9", which means they aren't bumping their head on everything, and it isn't more than a couple of years younger than their real age. Unfortunately, they are left handed, so their handwriting is more illegible than usual. They normally dress in plain clothing that is uncomplicated and easy to move in. Recently they've taken to wearing high collars and long sleeves, since their arms and chest are tattooed, as well as incorporating the septum piercing that was in when they first hijacked the body into their daily wear. ] [ To those who have recently met them, Diomedes seems like the ideal leader for a group like this. They always seem like they know what's going on and can keep their composure in almost any situation. The control they appear to have over their emotions can be intimidating, but they prize good instincts above logic. Logic won't save you when you're in a life or death situation and you need to make a choice immediately. They are also quite stern and absolutely will not tolerate people disrespecting them. While they don't mind occasional jokes at their expense, they expect everyone to defer to the person with the most experience: them. Diomedes isn't easygoing by any measure, but they are patient with the other group members and attempt to take care of them. The group is like a family to them, although you won't hear them admitting that. They are a highly private person who will go to great lengths to avoid talking about their feelings. Still, it isn't difficult to tell if they like a person. Just ask. Lying damages trust within the group and is a lot of trouble, anyway. They like being straightforward in their dealings with their teammates. In spite of being a fairly difficult person to read, they are uncannily good at realizing when someone is near a breakdown and taking over some of their responsibilitiesβthough they need to be completely nonfunctional before they allow anyone else to take on their responsibilities. They feel that in order to be a good leader they need to rely only on themselves, and in times of stress they withdraw and focus on their work. Seeking out assistance from others is not something they're comfortable doingβthey don't want to be pitied or seen as vulnerable. ] [ Diomedes subscribes to the old belief that the mind is a plaything of the body. Their personality changes slightly from body to body, although the difference is only noticeable if you know them quite well, and a new body usually prompts a change in their gender as well. From the offhanded comments they make about their life prior to joining Requiem, a person can gather that they are estranged from their family and have been for quite some time. ] [ floruit ]

the techician
Apollo / Jasper Lestrange / 27 yrs old / male / bisexual
intelligent -- short tempered -- quick-paced [ The body that Jasper currently inhabits is slender and elegant, and definitely considered attractive. He stands at 5'2'', with no real muscle to talk of and smooth brown skin. A small mole dots underneath his left eye, and said eyes are mismatched; one (the right) is a pleasant blue-green while the other is mostly brown, with barely a hint of blue-green. Both are with dark limbal lines. Tousled hair is a brown-black in colour and curls softly at the nape of his neck and behind his ears, cut short but still thick and soft to the touch, definitely feathery. Interestingly, he has a streak of white within it. He has a slender face and slender, long-fingered hands and is overall quite delicate, really. He has a left-sided dimple on the rare occasion that he smiles. Usually, Jasper wears an off-white button-up shirt and close-fitting black trousers; he's often barefoot, because he finds it more comfortable that way. ] [ Jasper is the sort of person that speaks only when spoken to, and when he does it's quick-paced and fast and often hard to keep up with, especially when he's talking about something he knows about. He's comfortable with his abilities and knows his limit, but that said, he is a genius in technology and is prone to not actually double-checking his work, sometimes too confident. He will not, however, risk it with psych chips; these are things he double-checks furiously to make sure that none of the team will get a corrupt chip. Well. Aside from him. He's a martyr, in a way, always using prototypes on himself to make sure they're not dangerous. This, of course, is how he seems to have two personalities; his usual self, Jasper and normal, and something a little quieter. Meet Arian Lune. Sir Arian Lune is the original conscience of this body, and has not entirely gone away because Jasper made a huge mistake. A very, very huge mistake. Now, the body is shared by the two; though Jasper is the more dominant conscience, and so he continues to work. Arian is a quieter, more nervous sort, eloquent and gentle, and generally quite shy of most people. The two do not get along and Jasper tends to murmur to himself when angered with the fellow conscience, and Arian is equally irritable with Jasper; he is angered at having his body taken over. While Jasper has eidetic memory (it makes him extraordinarily useful), Arian has terrible memory, and this is one of the firmest contrasts between the two. ] [ As mentioned, Jasper has eidetic (photographic) memory. Arian does not. There is a clear contrast between the two, and it's especially apparent in the way they interact with the group. While Jasper tends to tolerate the others and is not completely against making friends [providing they put in effort], Arian is firmly against them all and is eager to escape this. However, Jasper is quite keen on keeping his other conscience far away from others. Jasper speaks with a notable accent akin to a Southern Mexican one, while Arian speaks with something like a formal London English accent. Jasper's voice is deeper and cleaner, and Arian's is softer and sweeter. ] [ skulduggery ]

the assassin
Hades / Li Tianyu / 35 yrs old / male / homosexual calm -- brutal -- protective [ Tianyu isn't exactly too critical of his new body, to be fair, he quite likes it. It's Asian, which suits his origins. It's a little older than he is, but it helps, he supposes, with the intimidation factor. Tianyu's body has a mesomorph's frame and is quite fit. To boot, he stands at about 5'11", which in his opinion is pretty good considering that was taller than he ever was. Tianyu has a light tan complexion with dark brown monolid eyes and black medium-length hair that is slightly tousled with complimentary black stubble. The body, in addition, compared with his original body, is mostly free of scars - so it's a bit of a nice addition but also kind of a loss considering Tianyu views his scars as marking points in his life and reminders of his fights and kills. Though it certainly helps him fly under the radar, so he can't complain. Usually Tianyu wears dark jeans, black combat boots, a graphic t-shirt, black gloves, and one of his many leather jackets. Though of course, there is the rare occasion in which Tianyu might wear something like, god forbid, a suit. ] [ Tianyu isn't exactly how you would imagine an assassin to be like. Just, not exactly. Certainly, he has the self-discipline part mastered. He understands how to prioritize important matters above his needs and desires, and he understands that calmly analyzing a situation generally brings one further in life than rushing into a situation. He's calm, he's collected, and he's surprisingly - very organized. It's easy to think a man who kills people for a living is hard and rough and cruel and evil. And sometimes, that's exactly what Tianyu is. He's brutal, he's merciless, and he never hesitates. But he also has a softer side to him, one that he's not afraid of admitting to. He's protective of those in his team. Tianyu never had a family, the group - though they're all strangers, they're the closest thing he's ever had to a friend, so he'll take care of them. In addition, Tianyu's got quite a sense of humor and a bit of a biting sense of sarcasm when called for. He's also quite surprisingly philosophical, because after all, what is existence if you do not question why you exist? He's also really difficult to handle sometimes. He likes speaking in riddles sometimes and withholding information. He's prone to keeping secrets and having his own trump cards in the case he needs them. He's a survivor, and even if he loses everything - there's no doubt Tianyu will keep fighting, even if it means he's fighting for nothing. Because Tianyu is built in a brutal world, and henceforth - he knows nothing but how to fight. And fight he will. ] [ Tianyu never had a family. He was abandoned when he was young. He was adopted, though, by a very kind old woman. Or rather, a very opportunistic woman. He was taught, from a young age, to hate the Immortals. That his parents were probably ran out of money by them, too poor to even really care for their son - so they abandoned him. She was also a criminal, someone who taught him how to do a lot of, well, bad things. He was, to her, a protege rather than a son. She taught him many things, but one day she disappeared, and he was on his own. He's been fighting the Immortals ever since, and when the Requiem picked him up - he finally had a cause. He speaks both Chinese and English. ] [ β£ Xiahou Dun β£]

the double agent
Tisiphone / Indra Novaya / 29 yrs old / female / asexual extroverted -- brash -- cunning [ For someone so prideful about her appearance, Tisiphone takes the lack of choice when it comes to requiring a change of body with eager enthusiasm - though, as a newer member, it isn't something she is especially accustomed to yet. Nonetheless, she fully intends to do what needs doing and look good while doing it. This particular form stands at 5'7", most likely a couple of years above her true age, and is in lean, athletic form which provides her with some strength and stamina she still isn't entirely accustomed to possessing, nor is she especially dedicated to maintaining. Still, she's happy to reap the benefits for the time being. What started out as very long and luxurious hair, she has chopped up to above her shoulders in rather messy, light waves. The colour, however, she has maintained with meticulous devotion - a very light platinum blonde, almost more of an off-white shade, a little contrasting against her olive skin. She has sharp, wide-spaced eyes which are dark hazel in colour, a delicate nose with a rounded and slightly upturned tip, and thick lips with a flat upper line. A smattering of dark freckles cross a narrow stretch over her nose and under the eyes. A willing conformist to the fashion whims of the immortales, she messes with her appearance often, and has a slightly off-beat sense of fashion that may well come from actually trying too hard to keep up with it all - but she pulls off it largely because of the confidence with which she owns it. ] [ Tisiphone is a self-assured and assertive woman, though tends to fall into the trap of the confidence - and naivety - commonly attributed to the newer members who haven't had their overconfidence checked just yet. In possession of a loud presence and a loud mouth, she's determined and often intense when focused on something - which makes her diligent to whatever task is at hand, but also impatient and often impulsive too, prone to over-simplifying matters. Her friends and connections are her number one asset, and she knows how to be charismatic and diplomatic - which makes it all the more irritating when she chooses not to be. She's ruled more by her emotions than she likes to think, and does get worked up in an argument, or if she feels she isn't being listened to. She's clearly not unused to a bit of acting and manipulation, and it can be difficult, without knowing her well, to tell what is genuine and what is fake. Indeed, she often comes off more like the immortales she has befriended, and those relationships have made her occasionally prone to more sympathy than is best had given Requiem's goals. Those not easily trusting may well question her loyalties, and with understandable reasoning - having a life on the side of the very thing they're fighting can make her seem detached from the rest. However, truly befriending her will gain you a loyal and hardworking mind, and it would be unwise to underestimate the value of a man on the inside. ] [ Though Indra doesn't speak much of family, it has more to do with a lack of much to be said rather than any unwillingness to speak of them. Her parents are among the ranks of the immortales, and it's implied that there's a fair amount of wealth in the family, too, even by the standards of the immortales. One can gather that while she is still in contact with her parents, the life they believe her to have vs that which she lives are two very different things. She also makes reference to two brothers, though there's nothing to indicate any closeness between them. She speaks with a light Russian accent. ] [ Π²lΟ

claims are all good & will be posted once i get out of class in an hour and a half or so! lin is correct, though. claims aren't permanent until you've sent me an rp sample. it would be upsetting to work so much on your character and not be accepted. although honestly i don't think that is likely provided you can consistently hit the word count i suggested without too much trouble and write posts others can reply to.
