The next morning, Sawyer was the first to rise. "Hey." she said, peering over the side of the roof. "Dead-eyes are gone, mostly. Let's pack up and get the hell off this roof."
"Hey, Seth. Lacey. Come look at this, will you?" said Ryker, squinting at something in the distance.

Opal opened her eyes, blinking several times in confusion as she felt the hard floor under her. She was cold, and for some reason her side hurt. Then it all came back to her and she groaned as she rolled over, feeling somehow even more exhausted than when she'd gone to sleep.
Seth meandered over, pausing to probe at a box with his foot before uttering a low sound if annoyance at its emptiness. He lifted his head, glancing around at all the other survivors to see how many were awake and guessing only a few had really gotten to sleep at all.

Lacey stumbled over to the boys. She stood next to Seth and followed their gazes, squinting harshly in an attempt to see whatever it was the two were looking at.

A large, dark plume of smoke was rising from behind the adjacent buildings, less than a mile away.
"That look like it's coming from the warehouse to you?" asked Ryker, desperately hoping he was wrong. They'd left so much behind so they could travel light...stupid decision, as he thought back on it.

Lacey turned her gaze downward and gave a light nod of her head. "Yeah..." She couldn't believe her luck. She wondered silently how the group would get through such a large loss, and turned her gaze upwards to Seth, making an attempt to gauge his reaction.

Seth shaded his eyes, staring at the plume of smoke that stood out so strikingly against the pale morning light. "Bloody hell." He swore, turning to look at the other two. "Lacey. Ryker. You two didn't put out your camp fires last night."

"No, that's not it." said Ben, joining the group. "The truck, remember? Someone sent it. Same guys probably found the warehouse and torched it during the night."
Ryker shook his head, mentally collecting himself. "Okay...okay. A few of us should go...look at it. Just to be sure there's nothing left." He turned around. "Anyone wanna volunteer?"
"Ryker, those people could still be there." said Sawyer. "We should just go, supplies or not. Avoid the whole thing."

Charlie rubbed his eyes as he woke. Quickly, he turned his gaze to the cloud of rising smoke and got to his feet. Upon hearing Ryker's question, he cleared his throat. "I'll go."
Lacey was unsure of whether she should volunteer or not, still being somewhat injured. She cradled her bandaged arm and looked to Seth, and then to Ryker.

"Probably all burnt to a crisp by now." Seth put in, watching as the others slowly joined them. "But hey, I'll tag along for the exercise, after breakfast." He smirked, walking over to a shelf with a dog-like bounce to his step and grabbing a bag of popcorn from the highest shelf.
"Something's wrong." Opal realized aloud, shooting Chip a quick worried glance as she got up. She stretched, running her filthy hands through her short hair before moving closer to the group. "What happened?"
"I can stay behind and look after the injured." Reese volunteered, shooting Lacey a meaningful glance as she spoke.

"Look." said Sawyer, pointing as Opal came over. "The warehouse." She turned to Ryker. "I still think this is a stupid plan...I'll stay here - get everyone else ready to leave is things to sideways down there."
Ryker nodded. "Good enough. Seth, Charlie. Let's go."

Charlie knelt to pick up his bag, and slung it over his shoulders.
Lacey took a few tentative steps over to Seth. The endeavor took quite a bit of effort for her, emotionally. She halted when she stood in front of him. Without looking him in the eyes, she focused on the ground, still holding the bandaged arm close. "Come back in one piece for me, alright?" The few words were spoken quietly, and she gave a brief, half smile.

Opal's mouth fell open. "What...but how?" She exclaimed, her under-rested brain struggling to keep up. "It's the middle of winter, there was just a blizzard. How is that even possible?"
Reese nodded to Sawyer, glancing at Ryker. "Good luck. I don't have to tell you to keep a low profile." She said simply, turning to begin organizing the few supplies they'd found on the roof.
Seth stared at Lacey, feeling as though someone had just given him an electric shock. His mouth was slightly open, but he couldn't speak as he struggled to fix his entire mental picture of how they'd been acting. He was supposed to be good at reading people. He was good at reading people, he'd read Ben and Ryker like a bloody open book. Did that mean that all those little glances hadn't been out of dislike? "Don't worry. I'm bringing along sunglasses, just in case." He said at last, grinning as he attempted to bring the conversation onto safer ground.

Lacey gave a small smile, and turned away without another word. He really was a bit cheeky, and far too optimistic. But she liked him. He seemed happy, and that gave her a sense of hope, somehow. Still, she reminded herself that she shouldn't become much more attached to him. He may not even come back alive from this expedition.

"Someone did it." said Sawyer. "That's what we think, anyway."
Ryker nodded, welcoming Chip into the group as he headed out.
The warehouse came into view as they rounded the bend - or, rather, the smoking, charred remains of what was a warehouse. Bits and pieces of it were still on fire, but for the most part it was just the hollowed out remains.
"Ben was right." said Ryker, shaking his head. "No way this was accidental."

Seth turned back to follow Ryker, still feeling puzzled but shaking it firmly off. He quickened his pace, moving to reach the smoldering remains before the others. "You think?" He answered Ryker, shaking his head and bending over to flip a large scrap of metal over. It burned his fingers, but he managed it anyway, hissing between his teeth and sucking on the offending fingers as sparks flew up. "Anybody bring the marshmallows?"
Reese sat cross-legged on the floor, a tiny but neat stack of boxes beside her. "Lacey, you should probably get something to eat." She called, waving the wounded girl over. "There isn't enough for everyone, and you're hurt."
Opal shot the bare pile of food a look of longing, but turned her back on it. The injured needed it more, she had to be the strong one here. She didn't even know it was possible to smell saltine crackers.

"I'm not hungry." The lie was blatant; Lacey's stomach knotted with hunger, but her pride wouldn't allow her to dip into the group's meager food supply. She felt that if she did, she'd owe them something.
Charlie stood with his arms crossed. Whoever caused this must have really had it out for the group. He said nothing as he watched the remains burn. "I hope no one was left behind here?"

Sawyer shook her head at the small pile of boxes and cans. So little left, and without the warehouse...
"Everyone was out or with us." said Ryker. Thank goodness for that. He paced the exterior of the building. "Alright. What now? I guess - "
Ryker was cut off abruptly as gunfire sounded from somewhere inside the building. "Get down!" he shouted, veering off behind a tree as people briefly peeked out from behind the remains of the warehouse walls.

Seth jumped, twisting around mid-hop and scrambling for cover as ashes flew from both his heels and the missed shots. He managed to duck behind a blackened slab of metal that was still standing, and squinted as he peered around him. "I think you guys made your bloody point." He shouted experimentally, wondering who these people even were. Oh. Okay, they might be the ones who'd recently had their leader assassinated.
"We've already fixed your wound and hauled you up this ladder." Reese said patiently, watching Lacey closely and holding out a can of tuna. "You're stuck with us for now. Eat the food."

Charlie leaped behind a tree, adjacent to Ryker's own hiding place. "Hold it!" he yelled. "We're not here to hurt anyone!" Charlie knew the odds of their attackers listening were low, but hoped, even so, they would have some consideration for the trio's lives.
Lacey eyed the can reluctantly, and then reached out and took if from Reese's hand without a word. She situated herself against the wall of the roof, but not before taking a single stack of Saltine crackers. She opened the can, and began eating, first slowly, then more hungrily.

Alright! All done.)
Ryker sank down, back against the tree. One hand held his gun, the other was pressed against his now-bloodstained side in an attempt to slow the bleeding.
A tall, blonde man vaulted over a mound of debris in the middle of the warehouse's burning shell, a heavy machine gun hanging loosely at his side. He looked around, hearing Charlie and Seth but unable to see anyone. "Well...is that right? Maybe you should've thought about that before you took down our leader, huh?" he said, clear voice echoing through the surrounding area. "I wouldn't try to fire off a shot, by the way - you're badly outnumbered."
Back on the roof, Sawyer stiffened. "Was that gunfire?"

Reese nodded at Lacey, but her satisfied expression was at once pierced with alarm. "Gunfire?" She repeated, her back stiff as she got to her feet and darted to the window. "Where did it come from?"
"Oh no...you don't think..." Opal bit her lip, shooting Lacey a fearful glance as she sat up on her knees. If Sawyer was right, she feared Ryker and the others were in far deeper water than they'd thought.
"Are you all [curse]ing blind?" Seth shouted, realizing too late that he'd just given away his position. He couldn't see the others, but he figured they were as pinned down as he was, so he threw caution to the wind and continued his reply. "That was Benny, you big muppet. We were just along for the not getting our brains blown sky-high."

Charlie gave a dissatisfied huff and craned his neck to peer out from behind his hiding place. "Now, how do you all know that it was even our group?" he started. Seth had probably already ruined any chances they had of convincing the strangers otherwise, but he decided to try anyway. Besides, he had no idea what had happened.
Lacey immediately set down her food and stopped eating upon hearing the shots. She said nothing, but her face had transitioned to a sicky green, and her hands shook. D*** it, Seth... Please be okay. Her mind began to conjure up terrible scenes of the group being overrun by walkers, of Ryker carrying Seth dead in his arms, a stab wound in his head, and blood staining his black leather jacket. She tried to swat away the scene, but her anxiety continued to worsen, and before long, she sat shaking, her head between her knees.
