(Thanks!)
This was about the last place in the world where Robin wanted to be. No matter how hard she tried to convince her parents, both verbally and with her little gift, nothing could sway them. Apparently, flunking most of her classes and convincing her teachers to boast her grades was the last straw for them. Honestly, Robin could have done much much worse, not that she was about to share that. It wasn't like Robin wanted to be a troublemaker, but she always felt it was important to make sure she practiced and honed her gift. She never knew why she could sense and control other people's emotions, but it always seemed like something that would become important, when the time was right. And whatever it was, it was probably more important than schoolwork.
At her old school, while she mostly manipulated other students into the usual things, tutoring her without fees, doing her favors without complaint, but she also tended to create a circle of drama among those that Robin felt needed some excitement in their lives. She couldn't go straight into that her first day of boarding school, but she was already curious at the different emotions and control she could excerpt over these particular students. Did they tend to be grumpier? Would they be tougher to bend to her will? Only time would tell, and it was the only silver lining Robin could think of.
The boredom from most of the tour guides rolled off in waves. Most of them were probably forced to be there. A few were generally peppy, but that seemed to just be their personalities. Ugh. Hopefully Robin could steer clear of those, people like that never seemed to mesh well with a quiet, generally more analytical than social Robin. One emotion seemed to stick out from the rest, like a sore thumb. Someone was waiting intently for something. Strange. Robin couldn't tell who yet, as there were a whole semester's worth of students surrounding her at the moment, and she couldn't quite lock down on it, but soon enough she would know. Robin would find out one way or another. She always did.
Finally, she sat, taking a moment to sigh and gather herself, observing her surroundings. The cafeteria wasn't exactly a pleasant place to be in. The sooner the tours started, the better. In the meantime, Robin busied herself with retying her braid of messy red hair.

It really was quite endearing, how talkative August got as soon as they got to a topic he was interested in. He seemed to have researched this quite extensively, something Oliver could not say he'd done himself, but that only served to prove how interested he was. Interest suited him, Oliver decided.
He contemplated what he could add to the conversation. Unlike August, he hadn't done his reading. All he had was mild interest in the subject. "I'd love to travel through space sometime," he said. It didn't contribute any new facts to the conversation, but it was better than nothing. "You'd see things people can only dream of down here."
He couldn't say he was passionate about the subject, but he definitely found it fascinating. Not so much that he actively sought out information about it, or even looked for fictitious works that dealt with it, but enough for him to be invested in this conversation. Hopefully, that wasn't something August would judge him for.

(Sorry about the wait, I fell asleep.)
Charlotte had not been given a name, though that would have been immensely helpful. No, she had been given a vague description and that there were a couple people that she could see that fit the bill. It narrowed things down, sure, but Charlotte needed to be certain. Of course, the person that gave her this information insisted that everything would work out so long as she didn't try to go meddling with anything. Let things play out, he had told her. Of course, that was not her strong suit. But still, she tried.
She stayed where she was while the students filed in, didn't go after anyone who seemed like they might be the empath, though she wanted to. No, she stayed put until all the new students came in and the principle called for silence. One by one, new and old students were paired off and sent on their way, some getting stern looks and reminders to be on their absolute best behavior.
And then Charlotte was called up and she got to her feet, strolling up to meet the student she would be showing around. Robin. That was the other name called out. This, of course, did not give her any clues. Robin could be a girl or a boy, could be anyone in this room. A couple girls that could potentially be the empath had left already, and each time one did, there was a little spike of worry. What if this didn't work out? What if something went wrong?
Her source said it would be fine but he could be wrong. The future was complicated, sometimes unpredictable. Yes, he was good at what he did but he wasn't perfect. The empath might not have even come today. She might not come at all. This could be a waste of time.
~~~~
"That's definitely possible." August told him. "There are companies that want to make space travel accessible to the public. Of course, it'll probably expensive and kind of dangerous, at least at first. But we'll probably get to a point where space travel is as common as taking a plane. That won't be for a while though."
Would August want to do that? Would he want to go out into space? Probably. Sure it was dangerous, but it was also an incredibly unique experience. For him, it would be worth it. He'd thought about being an astronauts for a bit, but that was when he had been very little.
"If you were given the opportunity to go into space, do you think you'd take it?"
"Without hesitation," Oliver replied sincerely. He understood it would likely be a dangerous thing to do, even more so if he didn't consider it properly, but he couldn't say he cared. He couldn't turn a chance like that down, even hypothetically, because he'd spend the rest of his life being the guy that could have gone into space but didn't. "It's that or turn it down, and I could never do that."
"Would you?" he asked, curious. August seemed invested enough to give the same response that Oliver had, but he also seemed like the kind of person who thought things through a little more. Not that Oliver knew him well enough to say.
( sorry for the short post! )
(It's fine~)
August nodded. "Definitely." This was an easy question for him, as he had thought about it quite a bit. He could live with never going, but it certainly would be pretty cool to do it. Plus, seeing the Earth from space was apparently a very eye opening experience and probably beautiful.
Hmm, this was definitely not what August had expected the night to be like. He had thought that he was stay pretty invisible, maybe have a couple awkward conversations, and that would be that. He didn't think he would be talking to Oliver, who very super popular, and actually enjoy the conversation. It was strange, to say the least. But, he assumed that after the party was over, things would be the way they always were. Oliver and August wouldn't talk anymore, which was a bit disappointing, but August would get over it.
Robin, with a small, annoyed huff, finally stood when her name was called. "Just when I was starting to get comfortable too," she muttered to herself, mostly complaining out of the bitterness of her situation more than anything. The cafeteria was the exact opposite of comfortable. Perhaps a chance to stretch her legs and getting away from the crowd- and the flurry of emotions it came with- could do her some good. Improve her mood. She was just beginning to perk herself up when she caught her guide's eye. What was the name that was called out? Charlene? Charlotte? That sounded right. Yes, Charlotte was to be her guide, and with one look Robin could tell where the sense of waiting was coming from.
Geez, a little anxious to get started, huh Charlotte? Robin thought to herself as her guide's emotions began more clear. Once she began to focus, Robin could pick out all kinds of things bouncing around inside of her. Some agitation, some small sense of annoyance, but what seemed to be growing stronger and stronger were little pangs of worry, which rattled around in Robin's brain as well, once she caught wind of it. Must be someone's first tour. As her good deed of the day, Robin decided to go easy on her. Besides, she didn't look like someone Robin wanted to be messing with on her first day at the school. Or ever. Yes, Charlotte seemed to be wired quite tightly, a lot of things lurking beneath the surface. Robin got the feeling she didn't want to be the one to make her snap. Or be around her when it happened.
What could have been her first connection, dare she consider even friend, at this awful school now seemed more like a hurdle to leap. How long could she go without accidentally pushing one of Charlotte's buttons? It was a game Robin didn't have the energy to play right now. She briefly considered using her little gift to make the girl feel more at ease, but it was risky. She had no idea how Charlotte would react to that. Even if Robin could potentially smooth away any confusion or fear that might come up, it was still too much of a risk. It was the first day. There would be plenty of time to practice later on.
Finally, Robin approached the other girl. Robin may not have had the confident aura Charlotte gave off, but her steps were sure and as usual, she had a glint in her eye that said she knew something you didn't. Which was usually true. Her gift did so much for Robin, she sometimes wondered who she would be if she didn't have it, or learn it. No matter. All that mattered now, was making a good first impression. "Hey. It's Charlotte, yeah?" she asked, flashing a quick smile and sticking her hands in her jacket pockets.
When Charlotte saw Robin, some of the tension she was feeling went away. It wasn't all gone, not by a long shot, but did feel a tad bit better. This girl fit the description. She could be the empath. This was good. This made her job a little bit easier. Charlotte wouldn't have to worry too much about trying to befriend her, as she was the first person the girl met. Newbies did tend to like sticking with their guides, at least until they settled in.
But, of course, Charlotte had to make sure this was indeed the empath, which would be tricky. She couldn't just ask, seeing how, if she was wrong, that would make things pretty awkward. No, she had to be subtle. Subtle wasn't the easiest thing for her, of course, and thismission might have been better suited for someone else. But no, it had to be her. Things apparently wouldn't work out right if it wasn't her.
"That's right." Charlotte nodded, offering a smile of her own. She was tough, yes, but not mean. Certainly not mean to someone she potentially needed to save the world. Most of her attitude was to keep others at this school away from her. If they were afraid of you, they wouldn't mess with you. Well, that and Charlotte was trying to save the world. Doing that kind of thing made you tough.
Regardless, she could certainly be nice. Though, this kindness could backfire on her. If Robin was not the girl she needed, and they ended up being friends, that made her job more difficult. Charlotte didn't need friends right now. That would just distract her, and she didn't have time to be distracted.
"Come on, let's get on with this." With that, she started out of the cafeteria. They did have quite a bit to see.
Oliver sighed and nodded, seemingly pleased with the response he'd gotten. It was nice to know that they were on the same page about this one thing, when they seemed to have such little else to bond over.
Oliver liked bonding, and he tried to form some kind of bond with everyone he met. It was what made him so well-liked, he made an effort with everyone. Not so much out of obligation or kindness, but because he found it fascinating to see that he had something in common with everyone he spoke to. And that was true. With enough time, he managed to find something. Sometimes it took a long time, sometimes it was obvious from the beginning. Sometimes it was something major, like being on the same team or growing up in the same neighbourhood. Other times is was tiny, like sharing a favourite dish or having seen the same movie growing up. It didn't matter. Of course, the consequences it brought were welcome, too. Oliver enjoyed his social standing, maybe a little more than he should.
"So, what's so great about space?" While the phrasing might have seemed a little passive aggressive, his tone conveyed nothing but interest and curiosity.
( as much as having them just chatting is great, I feel like we need something to happen relatively soon. what do you think? )
"Eager, I see?" Robin smiled cheekily, even though she knew eager wasn't exactly the right word. A little impatient? Perhaps. Even though they were exiting the cafeteria, were all the emotions were most prominent, there were still a few wayward feelings floating around in the school, begging for attention. With so many things to focus on, it was hard to catch a hold of all the details of Charlotte. Not that it was her business. Sometimes, Robin had to remind herself she couldn't just go poking around everywhere in other people's psyche. Charlotte may not even become a permanent person in Robin's life here. It would just make things easier to leave her be for now, and instead, take in the school. Even with that in mind, she still couldn't ignore the more insistent parts of her emotions. Charlotte was feeling the slightest less worried, and seemed friendly enough, even if there was something more too it... No no, Robin had to focus. "So, where to first?" she said, trying to get herself used to her new surroundings. It wasn't terrible looking so far. Not that she wanted to spend all of her time there. At least it was pretty large. She could explore for a while and not get bored. It almost made her wish for a pen and paper to take note of all the spots she wanted to come back to- or at least so she wouldn't get terribly lost when the time came for classes.
"There's just so much to see. We've barely explored anything out there. Even the places we've gone to, we hardly investigated." They had stayed pretty close, really. People had gone to the moon a handful of times, but that was about it for places they've gone. "It's important, I think, to know what's out there." August didn't have to go out there to know, but he wanted to. It was something he cared about, and if he had to opportunity to be part of something like that, why not take it?
"That and low gravity seems pretty neat." Well, aside from the negative effects it had on one's body. That, however, was something August thoight was best not to discuss. This would probably be a rather boring topic, something even Oliver would be likely to want to get away from.
Honestly, August was surprised Oliver hadn't already made an excuse to leave. This was what often happened to August. Of course, that in part had to do with people reading August's inability to continue a conversation as a desire to stop talking. To be fair, those people would often be right in their assumptions. August was, a lot of the time, happier on his own than in forced interactions.
(Yeah, I agree. Unfortunately, at the moment I'm not too sure what to do with them. I have tons of cute ideas later on in the plot but not now >.< I'm also running on not a lot of sleep so my brain does not want to think right now.)
~~~~
"Well, first you should know that this building is where all the recreational stuff is." Charlotte started. "Gym, auditorium, library, and the cafeteria, obviously. That's all here." It wasn't a huge building, and it wasn't in terrible shape. Nothing here was all too fancy, or always the most clean, but it was doable.
She led the way outside and pointed to another building, close by. This one was bigger. "That's where classes are held. Everything is pretty easy to find, since it's just one giant rectangle. I'd show you around but the doors are locked when we don't have class, even for tours. They don't exactly trust us too much here." This was, of course, annoying, but Charlotte could work around the constant supervision. It just made things a tad more difficult.
"I'm sure you don't mind though. Not like it's really all that interesting in there anyway." It was, after all, just a bunch of classrooms. She would get to see for herself soon enough. That would have to be good enough for Robin. "What will probably be more interesting to you is seeing where you're going to live. Someone shoyld have given you a key with your room number on it?"

( I won't post a proper reply right now - my head is not up for that challenge - but I will do my best to see what I can think of. be warned that I, too, am running on very little sleep as well as some serious painkillers, so who knows what's happening right now? what we need, really, is a way to force them to interact again. we could either do that by agreement (one of them being like 'hey, we should hang out sometime' or something) or by coincidence (we agree on a time and place they run into each other and pick up conversation again) both work, but I've no ideas for either.)
