Xanthe stared at Shafer, disturbed by his offer. The nymph was legitimately offering to let him burn him- that had to hurt just like getting splashed. "No," He said, bewildered. "I told you, I'm not bad." He crawled back through the fire, which felt nice, and sat back down next to the nymph. "You can have the bracelet if you want," He told Shafer, gesturing to the drying scales. "When it's done. To replace the arm band." Though demons were generally selfish, they understood jewelry. Xanthe would be upset if someone broke one of his cuffs too. But he didn't understand the real reason that the water nymph was angry, or at least chose to ignore it. After all, he had only stated the facts.

Shafer swallowed harshly when his offer was turned down, equal parts relieved and confused. Any member of his own family would've jumped at the chance to put a spark or two out on his skin, but then again. He was pretty sure all families were a little bit violent with each other. He watched the demon closely when he came back to sit near him. He looked a little bit horrified when the prospect of him taking the gift was brought up. "Gods, no. It's yours, I caught the fish for you. It was a gift. It's yours. Plus I don't think the bracelet would do much to replace the arm band. There's a reason it's not as pretty as the rest of things on me, I had to make them kinda quickly. So I wouldn't stab any of you guys." He tilted his head to the side as he reached down and adjusted the material to cover the venomous barbs. At least the sun was starting to go down so it was harder to make out details. He only hoped the demon didn't have some sort of freakish night vision.

(I'm gonna crash now because it's super late here)
"Okay," Xanthe said, finding keeping the bracelet agreeable. He peered curiously at the nymph's arm. "What's there? He asked, not caring if it was rude. Unfortunately for Shafer, Xanthe did possess a sort of night vision. It came when one evolved from living in caves. His sight wasn't particularly clear, but he could still see. His stomach grumbled and he realized he still hadn't eaten. Forgetting about the arm band, Xanthe reached over and popped one of the fish bits into his mouth- that's how hungry he was. No faces or anything. Of course, it still tasted strange, but being burnt and hot definitely improved the flavor. "Do you want one? You could dunk them in the water to cool them off," He suggested.

Alright, fam Sleep well!))
Shafer reached up to scratch at his neck as he scrunched his nose and stared out across the water, looking as if he was thinking about the best way to respond to that. He could be blunt but he also didn't want to give the demon another reason to be scared of him. So he was thankful when he was distracted by the food and they could drop the subject. He stretched grandly, back arching and chest puffing out as he sighed in relief. "No, I'm fine. I don't eat a lot. If it were up to me, I wouldn't eat at all. Ever. But I enjoy life so sadly, it looks like I have to. You're sweet though."

(morning)
Xanthe nodded and ate another piece of fish. Then he crawled over to examine the fish scales, making sure they were nice and dry. They glittered prettily in the fire light. "It's getting dark," He said, turning to Shafer. "We should go back." It was also getting cooler outside. That wouldn't necessarily hurt Xanthe, but he'd much rather be indoors. And he didn't know the way back to the orphanage.

morning))
Shafer had gotten a bit lost, watching Xanthe move around and do whatever demons do, he was only paying attention to the vibrant colours that moved around just beneath his skin, now more obvious than ever in the low light. So when he spoke, it was a bit of a shock. Shafer tilted his head at the demon, corner of his mouth quirking up in a semi-uncomfortable smile. He remained silent for a few moments as he let his gaze flick about before he responded slowly and uneasily, like he wasn't sure if this was the right answer. "I uh. I live here, Xanthe?" He gestured to the pond with a halfhearted flick of his wrist.

Xanthe was silent, and suddenly a bit scared. He should've known that Shafer lived in the pond, of course. Duh. That's where water nymphs lived. He supposed that he could try to go back to the orphanage alone, but... He didn't particularly want to be lost in the woods on a chilly night, even with his night vision. "Well... I can't sleep in there with you," He said, hoping the nymph would let him stay and wondering if he had a bed down there. "I can... I can sleep in the fire pit. If I can stay." He moved quickly, not giving the nymph time to deny his request, and collected some more leaves and bits of wood.

To be perfectly honest, that sounded like a horrible idea for the demon. Sleeping outside? In a fire pit? Right next to an ominous pond? Shafer didn't even know what kind of supernatural wildlife they had around here other than himself, he spent all his nights burrowed safely into the side of his pond. He didn't want to be responsible if he popped up the next morning and his demon was torn to bits and scattered around his home, that would really suck in just a lot of ways. "I could try to walk you back to that house, if you want. I mean I'm not totally sure that I know the way, but I could try?"

(yeah none of those images really fit how I imagine him looking but I just tried to get the feel of him lol xanthe and shafer get lost in the woods and have to bear grylls it for a night)
Xanthe stopped collecting leaves and stared at the nymph. "Um... okay," He said uncertainly. He didn't want to be lost in the woods on a cold night, just as much as he didn't want to die in the woods on a cold night. He dropped the leaves and went back to the fire pit. "Are you sure? Because I can't start the fire again after I put it out..." Maybe someone would come looking for them. But who was Xanthe kidding? He'd been gone all day with a water nymph, one of the most dangerous creatures to his species, and no one had noticed. He didn't even have a bed at the orphanage. Or at least, not that he knew of- he hadn't tried to sleep the night before.

I so appreciate the effort <3 and yup thats the plan))
Shafer glanced around uncertainly, with no real clue where to start. If he had troubles during the day, the night was even worse. A lot worse. He had the eyes for navigating dark waters, land just. Felt different somehow. Scary. Foreign. There were bears and stuff. He finally sighed as he turned back to look at Xanthe. "Yeah, I'm sure. I'll--... I will figure it out." He gave a solid nod as he finally picked a direction and wandered that way, toying with the beads hanging off his waist as he went. "Gods, you are so difficult. Why can't you have a special water tolerance. Your special hair is not cutting it for me."

Xanthe stamped out the fire and chased after Shafer. "I'm difficult? Why can't you have special heat tolerance instead of mediocre hair," He complained, offended that the nymph did not appreciate his golden hair. That was by far the demon's best feature. He caught up to Shafer and walked only slightly behind him, letting the nymph lead the way. "What kind of water nymph are you, anyway?" He asked, peering closely at Shafer's hair and scales. He already said that he's not a siren. And probably not a selkie, because of the scales. "Are you a huldra?"

Shafer snatched his hair over one shoulder and glared back at him as he stroked the drying strands lovingly. How dare he. "My hair is not mediocre... And it's longer than yours." He didn't know if that was true but he said it anyway, like the length of his hair provided some sort of superiority. Well, to him, it probably did. He took a sharp turn when he recognized the an odd-shaped rock that he had scraped his leg against while he had been chasing that cat. But it probably looked like he had no idea what he was doing and just turned because he felt like it. "You think I'm a huldra?" He purred the words out as he glanced up at Xanthe through his eyelashes. "The seductively beautiful water spirit from European legend? That Huldra?" He scoffed and focused his attention back on the tangling of tree roots before him. "No, I'm not anything so regular. I'm a kaya-kwokaimuxw. From native american legend. We go by many names. Sabawaelnu, ne hwas, nibiinaabe..." He was having a terrible time struggling through the human pronunciations but it wasn't as if Xanthe would know he was butchering it. "We were seen as gods. I was royalty before I was dropped here."

Xanthe made a face at Shafer's hair jab. Whatever, it didn't matter what the dumb nymph though. Xanthe knew his hair was better. He reached back to un-braid it so that he could compare the lengths. Subtly, of course. He didn't want Shafer to know that his might really be longer. "Yeah, I should've known," He said. "Huldra are much prettier. And nicer." Xanthe racked his brain for anything about the kaya-kwokaimuxw, but got nothing. "Fire demons are gods too. Humans worship us. They push virgins into volcanoes for us," He told the nymph. Unlike them, fire demons didn't have to trick humans to get a bite, just exist and be beautiful and frightening. Humans were so stupid- and gullible. "There isn't royalty, though. My father is a general. He commands a whole army." He smiled proudly at that, not remembering that supposedly the whole reason he was here was that his parents were dead.

Shafer glanced back and clicked his teeth together threateningly. His looks were all he had and the next time this nonsensically angry fireball insulted him, Shafer was going to jump him. "Nice save, just keep suppressing the fact that I'm the most exquisite thing you've ever seen." He spoke musically as he avoided various obstacles. "We never asked for humans to push virgins into volcanoes for us. Because we're good and powerful enough and don't need that kind of validation." Which wasn't necessarily true but Shafer thought it sounded biting nonetheless... There was also the possibility that he didn't even know what a volcano was. He pushed his hair back over his shoulder to tumble down his back, not enjoying how the strands got in his face while he was trying to walk. "We don't need armies, the Great Spirit protects us. Because he likes us." Except from the humans apparently but he wouldn't get into that.

Xanthe rolled his eyes at Shafer's threats. "I'll push you into a volcano," He muttered. He wasn't scared of him anymore, not even a bit. The nymph was just petty and impulsive, that's all. Xanthe finished untangling his braids and smoothed his hair out, trying to guesstimate the length in comparison to Shafer's. We'll see how long his hair is when it's dry. Because it was maybe a tad bit longer right now. Maybe, but maybe Xanthe's guesstimation skills weren't the best. He gave the nymph a strange look. "There are too water nymph troops," He informed him. "On both sides of the war... Well, maybe more on the other side but there are some working with my father."

"Gods, yes. Honestly. End me," Shafer tilted his head back and gave a sigh of bliss at the thought of sweet death. He couldn't help but smile a bit at his own dramatics. He really was in love with himself. But then the demon started rambling about something that definitely wasn't the most pleasant to hear. "Shut up, you're lying!" Shafer immediately protested when Xanthe started doing that super annoying thing. Prove him wrong. Shafer decided they should move on because he wasn't in the mood to be disappointed in his race. He reached out and tapped his knuckles against that one tree the cat had bailed into. They were close and he was proud. "Shouldn't be too far from here."

"I'm not lying," Xanthe said crossly. "You're just mad because I'm right." But he let it go. The nymph really wasn't well-informed about much. And probably not about navigating the woods either. He looked around, but literally nothing looked familiar. And it was totally dark now. He could still see as if it was dusk, but still. Spooky. At least they were almost there, according to Shafer. Whose fault it was that they were in the forest in the middle of the night anyway. He turned his glowing eyes back to the nymph. "Why did you attack me? And make me follow you?"

"Liar," Shafer shot back, almost cutting him off in his haste to move on. He couldn't even focus on the journey because he didn't have much of a strategy when it came to finding his way out of this forest. He decided to keep going straight, or at least what he thought was straight, he had never been too proficient when it came to straightness. In any case, that's how he ended up in that field earlier. He almost tripped over a root when Xanthe spoke again. He had to stop walking for a few seconds and stare at him before he turned and continued like nothing had happened. "You're... Shiny," he explained slowly. He'd put a lot of thought into those words.

(SORRY I had to drive to the hockey club. Now I'm on mobile which sucks)
Xanthe gaped. "You attacked me because I'm shiny?" That was a horrible reason! That wasn't even a reason at all. "You were chasing me and staring at me all day. That's not just cause I'm... shiny." Distracted, the demon didn't notice a root until he halfway tripped over it. Grabbing for support, he unfortunately caught a fistful of Shafer's damp hair. "OUCH!" He shrieked, recoiling back (and almost tripping over the same root in the OTHER direction) and cradling his hand. "Ow ow ow ow." He blew on it softly.

hockey what are you canadian))
"Yes, that's my reason. I'm not kidding, that's the literal reason," Shafer spoke a bit incredulously. It was definitely the reason, there was nothing else. He glanced back just in time to watch Xanthe pitch forward before the sickening smell of smoke was in the air and the demon was screeching. Shafer's mouth dropped open as he shoved away from the situation until his back hit a tree. His hand shot back to bring his hair over his shoulder, dragging out a sizeable amount of destroyed strands. "Are you f---ing kidding me?!" He yelped as he continued to run his hands through his hair, finding more broken strands with each pass. Most of the damage was at the bottom so it just looked a bit uneven now but Shafer had no way of knowing that. As far as he was concerned, his hair was ruined.

(No I'm Texan LOL)
Xanthe's hand was dull and mottled, and he blew on it, trying to bring warmth back with his hot breath. His head snapped up when Shafer cursed. The nymph was standing there holding his damaged hair with an expression of... Well, he looked shocked and furious. "I'm sorry!" Xanthe said frantically. Maybe he was just a little bit scared of Shafer again- but the demon understood hair, and he would be more than furious if someone... Burnt his. Except that his hair wouldn't burn but you get the point. "I'm sorry, I'll- I'll make it up to you somehow!" He told him, reaching out his uninjured hand. He pulled it back when he realized that it would only make things worse.

Shafer stared at Xanthe like he couldn't quite believe what he was looking at. Brows raised, mouth forming a small 'o', eyes once again blown out completely, it would be funny if he didn't suddenly look so heartbroken. He continued to run his claws through his mane absentmindedly, not even cleaning them of damaged hair anymore. He sniffled a bit, not knowing how to deal. Again with the goddamn situations he'd never had to deal with before. Sasha cut his hair once but that had been okay because. That was his brother. Xanthe wasn't his brother. The nymph huffed softly in defeat as he turned and continued walking in that pouty, dejected manner of his. "We forgot the scales."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," Xanthe said, scrambling away from the tree to catch up to the nymph. He felt bad- Shafer was looking really, really bummed out. He also had totally forgotten the scales. "You can get them when you go back," He told Shafer, trying to cheer him up. "Bring them back to the orphanage sometime and I'll make a pretty bracelet." Maybe he'd make some sort of bracelet for the nymph too. Xanthe doubted that there was a real forge there, but he could improvise. He felt bad again when Shafer didn't respond for a minute. "Your hair doesn't look ruined. It's just a little uneven, you can trim it... I'm sorry," He repeated pitifully.

I know that was uh. Symbolism :') Ok you know what that's offensive Texas is unnecessary and Canada belongs to the moose.))
Shafer puffed his cheeks out as he continued down the trail he'd made hours earlier and side eyed the demon when he appeared next to him. He listened to the poor guy desperately try to appease him and usually, this would've delighted Shafer. But he was too heartbroken over his hair. He suddenly stopped un his tracks and gave a heavy sigh. "I have no idea where we are." He didn't sound too worked up about it though, was just stating a fact. He thought he knew, he didn't, now they were lost. He stared up at Xanthe and folded his arms across his chest, obviously waiting for what he wanted to do.

(WHAT that's offensive, Texas forever.)
Xanthe thought the nymph was joking for a second, until he just crossed his arms and stared at him. Then Xanthe realized that he actually meant it. "We're lost in the forest in the middle of the night?" He asked incredulously, his eyes flickering in a frightened way that was noticeable in the dark. Wow, just his luck. Xanthe was pretty sure the nymph didn't have night vision like him, so he shouldn't have been surprised but... "I thought you live in this forest, how do you not know the way to the orphanage?" He wanted to shake the nymph, but that would just hurt them both.

Shafer could've laughed at the look on the demon's face if he wasn't equally upset by the situation."Hey, I got you a fish, you'll survive the night." He grumbled at him, voice even more growly than normal, especially when the demon flashed his eyes at him in a way he was sure suggested disrespect. He leaned forward and gave a small but dramatic laugh. "I've lived in this forest for about three days, commoner. I had no interest in associating with you people." He took a step closer, daring the fire nymph to put his hands on him.
