❝ What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. ❞Yeah, right. If that's what you tell yourself at night to justify waking up tomorrow, good for you. Just know that it's not true. What doesn't kill you leaves you exhausted and weak. What doesn't kill you threatens you, constantly, with no relief or rest. What doesn't kill you is a nightmare. What doesn't kill you is ready to pounce again, ready for round two. What doesn't kill you is worse than anything that ever could.
plotAround a year ago, a group of scientists referred to only as The Company were getting ready to perform an experiment. They claim that, if successful, this is the first step towards making man his best self - fearless. They ask for volunteers, they need six people they say. And six people they get, terrified and desperate enough to agree.
The group join them at their facilities, excited for the possibility of living a life where they won't be afraid. They undergo extensive testing and experiments that are supposed to take their darkest fear away and leave them stronger for it. They live through psychoanalysis and blood draws, strange foods and IV drips containing god knows what. During their little free time, they take to exploring the facilities, curious. But they find something they did not expect, something that changes all of this.
With this new information to put things into perspective, the experiment no longer seemed tempting. They begin to protest in a desperate attempt to leave, ripping out IVs, refusing to answer questions asked by anyone but another member of the six. But the experiment is completed - this would all be a waste - and one morning they wake up different.
The experiment did not remove their fear. It twisted it into great power.
Afraid of what they could now do, the six repress their powers, refusing the training that's being offered to them. Useless now, they're cast out as failures. Society will be warned about them, they're told. They can never mention nor use their powers or they'll be imprisoned.
They stick together, knowing that a return to society without one another will be near impossible. They force their powers back, doing anything they can to avoid confronting them. Save for the accidents and rising panic, they learn to handle things. Until they hear word that The Company is going through with the experiment a second time. And this time, they're not taking volunteers.

infoSo you're still here? Welcome! Para Bellum - prepare for war - is, as you might have gathered, a small group rp based around the idea of powers and their connection to fear.
The roleplay takes place around the year 2033, and we will open up as the six are banished from The Company's facilities in Vermont, USA. They're left in a forest relatively close by. At this point, they will all know each other decently well, and they will all be aware that the others are experiencing the same issues as they themselves are. After a short while of us getting to know each other's characters, we'll skip ahead to when they receive the news of the second experiment and go from there.
The information that they uncovered is that they're being weaponised. So The Company knows about the sudden gain in power before the experiment is ever complete, and it's one of the main selling points of it. Under commission by a well kept secret government branch, they're intending to build a small army of superhumans who are unaffected by fear and holding power nobody else could dream of.
rulesAs always, this rp has rules I expect you to follow and respect. Please do read through them, no matter how boring it seems.1 - This is a semi-literate to literate rp, and as such, there are guidelines regarding what you can and cannot post. I ask that you give at least a paragraph of 5+ sentences and more if you want to. I won't set an upper limit, but please do bear in mind that if you write a ten paragraph post you may only get one or two paragraphs in response. 2 - I don't want this rp to crash and burn in the first week, so if you could post 3 or 4 times a week that would be wonderful, and that way nobody gets left behind. If you're missing for ten days, your spot will be opened back up again unless you've given prior warning. 3 - These forums have allowed a rating of PG-13 and no more, so that's what we stick to no matter what the content in question is. No exceptions. 4 - Be courteous, please. In rp, treat your fellow rpers with respect by refraining from godmoding, powerplaying and spotlighting. Out or rp, please do be friendly. If, for some reason, two of you get into a disagreement that you want to figure out, I'd like for that to be done through PM and not in this thread. 5 - There are six spots and six characters open, so everyone gets exactly one character. I would like for this to be somewhat balanced, so try not to make every single character female, for example. However, because of the themes this rp involves, this isn't really something vital; a slight unbalance is absolutely fine. LGBTQ+ characters are, of course, super welcome, as is any other minority your character belongs to. 6 - Something to note is that all of our characters will be extremely powerful as their power comes from fear and they all have such a strong one. Their main drawback is the fact that they are so afraid. They should not want to use their powers, and when they do they will be holding themselves back whether consciously or subconsciously. However, they are also brand new at them, so even if the raw power is there the control is not. Your character should not know how to perfectly control their powers on the first, second or even tenth try. 7 - To join, please use the form provided in the post below. Post your character in this thread and I'll add you as quickly as I can.
currentlyI'll do my best to keep track of time, seasons, most recent, big plot related happenings and announcements here.

charactersCharacters will be kept here for future reference. Necromancy: the power to utilise magic involving the dead, life-force and/or souls. Necrophobia: the fear of death and the dead as well as things associated with it. PJ is a very small woman, standing at only 5'2" and carrying very little on her bones. She's slim and lacks muscle, more so skinny than toned. She has thick, strawberry blonde hair that falls in soft waves to just past her shoulder blades. She has sharp features, softened only by the light dusting of freckles over the bridge of her nose and her warm brown eyes. Even her gestures are small and controlled, though she does tend to gesture a lot while speaking. She has a somewhat slouched posture and tends largely towards baggier clothes. Despite her size, PJ is a relatively loud person. She doesn't hesitate to state her mind and defend her opinions and often does so in a blunt manner. PJ is very picky when it comes to the people that she befriends and first impressions last a long time with her. However, she becomes loyal very quickly and she has a way of mothering the people she cares about. She's a very cautious person and doesn't like to take risks when her well-being, or the well-being of another person, hangs in the balance. PJ doesn't like to have questions about anything, so she plans feverishly for whatever might come next. She's easily agitated when she doesn't have all the information and has two approaches to not knowing: obsession or panic. PJ grew up as a quiet child in a very average family. She did well in school and made a few closer friends quickly. It wasn't until her grandmother, who she was very close to, passed away that they realised she couldn't handle death, and especially not the questions she had about it. She had her first panic attack of several to follow at the funeral, and since then she's spent her life avoiding anything even remotely related to death. The anxiety and panic built up as she got older and more people she knew passed until she began to isolate herself, rationalising her behaviour as a way to protect herself against the inevitability of loss. She recently graduated university with a degree in education and was moving on to become a math teacher when she heard about the experiments and decided to go ahead with it, not wanting to have to be unavailable for her students as well.
Kendra Forest | 22 | Female | Bisexual | Rosestar Reality Alteration : Ability to permanently warp reality; can will things in or out of existence, or change them in some way- thus permanently altering the current reality. Metathesiophobia : the fear of change. The first thing about herself Kendra would change (if she wasn't so afraid of change) would be her height. Sure, she's not a giant, and there's no way she sticks out of the crowd for it, standing at only five foot eight, but she hates towering over her shorter friends. Plus, it makes her paranoid- the taller she is, the easier she is to spot. Thankfully, the rest of her features don't attract any attention, no scars, no mysterious tattoos. Just a black-haired, green-eyed, dark-skinned twenty one year old, with a somewhat larger nose and a lanky frame of someone who doesn't look like they eat enough. Not ugly, but just enough under the scale of attractiveness she doesn't get unwanted attention. If she cleaned up a little, maybe that wouldn't be the case, but beauty contests are the last thing on her mind at this point. One would think that because she doesn't enjoy her height she would be constantly hunched over, but Kendra walks with her head held high in a kind of quiet confidence that is just intimidating enough so that random people won't bug her. It was useful even before the experiment, and now it would just serve to warn strangers to stay away. Her hair is naturally curly, and it's a pain to brush, but she still takes the time to do it. It just makes her feel better when she looks neatly put together- it gives off the illusion that she knows what she's doing. On the surface, there isn't a lot to Kendra more than just being the dead-panned, ultimate face of calm for the team. She's intelligent, a quick thinker, and always has about five backup plans churning in her brain. She acts as their rock. Even in the lab, she was someone to depend on. It's not that she's a natural maternal figure- more like an older sister, offering advice and smackdowns to those who dare cross her siblings. She can keep her head clear when the others are scared out of their wits, something that everyone needs given the circumstances. But it's not like Kendra isn't scared too. Her ability is incredibly powerful, and absolutely the last thing she wants. But she realizes that she's not alone in that situation. If she can learn how to control it, and the team needs her to change something, she'll try to do it. They'll just have no one else to blame when she has nightmares and panic attacks for days. Does this make her probably the one who bottles up the most emotion? Definitely. To keep this calm, this collected, every shred of self doubt she has about anything needs to get shut away. Kendra, for one, doesn't like doing it. She'd much rather be open with her friends, but she realizes she doesn't have the time. "But Kendra," you say, "couldn't you just make the time by shoving reality backwards?" In theory. But there's only so far Kendra can go for her teammates when it comes to her powers. And she's scared of how long she can last.
Like a few of the others, Kendra didn't have a very stable childhood. Her parents died in a car crash when she was five. She was passed around from family member to family member, and each time she started to get comfortable, something would come up- her grandparents got too old to take care of her, her aunt couldn't afford to take care of her anymore, things like that. At seven, she ended up with her godparents, which were some of her happiest years. They loved her deeply, just as her parents did- but their marriage was starting to fall apart. At eight, they got a divorce, and the court didn't know what to do with the child- technically, she wasn't adopted, and the godparents had no records that stated she should be living with them. She was sent into the foster care system, only to be tossed around and around again. Not many of the families that she ended up with wanted her at all. When she was sixteen, she finally found a real family. She was adopted, for real this time, and she ended up living safely, comfortably, and happily for the next few years. But there was still some part of her that thought it was too good to be true. Kendra's entire life was constantly changing- she couldn't, wouldn't, let that happen again. Those safe years were still more than enough to perpetrate her fear of change. After she graduated high school, she forced herself to commute to the local community college. Naturally, Kendra couldn't pick a major- she was a fantastic student, but she couldn't allow herself to be tied down to something, to change. She finally joined the experiment in a desperate attempt to get her life back on track- she couldn't live with her parents forever, and she wouldn't have a career if she couldn't allow herself to change. But we all know how that turned out. Josephine Johnson "JJ" | age 21 | female | straight | liz
Hydrokinesis: the psychic ability to manipulate the properties of water. Aquaphobia: the persistent, unwarranted and irrational fear of water. JJ stands at an average height of 5'5" with a slender build, her skin slightly pale with light freckles dusted over her nose and cheeks. Her auburn hair is almost always pulled back, small baby hairs always escaping and framing her slender face. When she lets it down, it reaches her lower back. She has bright green eyes and long eyelashes, her eyes very observant and kind. She has a small scar going through her right eyebrow from a car crash that killed her older sister. Looking at her, one would never expect it to be so deep and powerful, the only time it ever breaks is when she's scared, then it is shakey and an octave higher than normal. When she's nervous, she tends to ramble and even share a random useless fact or statistic with whoever is closest. JJ tends to stand tall, refusing to show any sign of weakness. She is very self-conscious of her smile, but if you can make her smile, it's breathtaking. JJ is a kind, affectionate girl who tends to be too wise and mature for such a young age. She tries to be optimistic at times although she's also a realist. Although funny and outgoing, at first she is guarded, having gone through strong trauma at a young age. But once you gain her trust, she'll stay by your side until the end. She's a lover and a fighter and is driven and stubborn.
She is very thoughtful of others, going out of her way to make others comfortable; its she least she can do. With her parents out of the picture, JJ was raised by her older sister until one fateful day when they were on a drive. It was Josie's birthday and they were going to the movies. JJ herself has just turned eighteen but couldn't imagine leaving her sister. They were crossing a bridge covered in ice when the car lost control and flew off of the bridge, crashing into the frozen lake. Her sister died on impact and as the car sank, it filled with water. JJ managed to escape the car and pull herself onto the riverbank. She was found hours later, suffering from hypothermia where she was treated for over a week. When she finally came to, she realized she had no one left. For months she was bullied after it was made known her new fear of water and was often teased, driving her to blindly sign up for the experiments.

Rin Mizushima | age 22 | female | bisexual (leans more towards females however) Chronokinesis : the temporal ability of time distortion, manipulation, and perception. Chronophobia : a persistent and irrational fear of the future, time passing, or running out of time. Being of mixed descent, (paternal) Japanese and (maternal) American (Caucasian), she has beautiful but rare and unconventional features. Her hair is raven-black and is cut just barely below her shoulders, and is naturally stick straight, but thick. Her skin is on the paler side, though it has warm and slightly tan undertones to it. Her eyes are a mix between typical, rounder Caucasian eye shapes, and the more slanted, Asian eye shapes, though they are more on the Asian side in shape and look. Her eye color however, is a pale grey-blue. She stands at 5 feet and 5 1/2 inches, and weighs slightly above average at 125 pounds. She has lean muscle mass, since she likes to stay fit. Rin also sports a single tattoo at the base of her neck, at the very top of her spine, the tattoo is a simple Japanese kanji for Dragon in black ink. Rin is always afraid of missing out in the important things of life, so she is very much a "Now" person. She is afraid that she will die not doing everything she wanted, and dying too soon, and running out of time. She never plans ahead, and always adapts quickly to situations, and never prepares for the consequences of her actions. For her, the past doesn't exist, and she tries not to the think about the future, only now, otherwise her anxiety starts to act up otherwise. She never plans anything, and is very disorganized and a bit scatter-brained, though she is incredibly intelligent. Rin's intellectual gifts have been wasted on her impulsive and reckless, "now" behaviors however, and she dropped out of college. She never thinks about the future, and she hates talking about it as well, and planning for it. She is very blunt and honest too a fault, and can be a bit cold and aloof at times, with barely any self control. She was also previously addicted to smoking, literally smoking anything and everything, though not any longer. Despite how smart and intelligent she was, she did poorly in school her whole life, she was absolutely amazing at taking tests, and always excelled faster than her classmates. However, her attention span was short, and so was her impulse control, leading her to have poor grades from neglecting her homework, and also making her a bit of a troublemaker, and a bully in her earlier school years. She was raised in Japan, where she was born, until she was ten years of age, which was when her parents got a divorce, and her mother took Rin with her when she moved back to America. Rin never saw her father again after that, and only received letters and phone calls from him once and a while throughout the rest of her life. Her fear of time began to develop fully after her parents divorce, which had been surprisingly traumatic for her. Thats when she learned that nothing lasts forever, and the future holds nothing but pain. She was also afraid of having regrets, and not having enough time in her life to do all the things she wanted, not having enough time before she either died, or got to old to do something. She didn't want to waste her life away like her parents did, working a miserable 9-5 job with no fun, joy, or freedom, and then later growing old, and dying, without ever doing something worthwhile. She was afraid of time running out, and she was afraid of the uncertainty that tomorrow always brought. This began to manifest as mild anxiety, and grew and grew into more as she got older and more mature and aware. It began to outwardly show itself as very reckless and self-destructive behaviors. She got involved with a bad group of girls at her private high school, and got into many physical fights, and psychological warfare with the rival group of girls, and also got into drugs, drinking, and other extreme and wild behaviors. Going to college, she had been studying to go to law school, but she only made it for a year and half before being kicked out of the college, and then just dropping out all together. She knew her irrational fear of the future and of time had made her this way, so when she first saw the advertisements for The Company, she signed up immediately.

Mitchell Moore | age 21 | male | straight Acoustokinesis : The ability to project as well as manipulate sounds and soundwaves using the mind. Phonophobia : A fear of or aversion to loud noises beyond the normal human reaction. Mitchell, or "Mitch" as he prefers to be called, is an average size at 5'9" but appears smaller. His slight build and lack of fat (and muscle) as well as his typical submissive posture (hunched over slightly, hands in pockets) make him smaller in others' eyes. His face is not unpleasant to look at but not exceptionally handsome either, with a smooth jawline and cheekbones, a smallish nose and chin, and a splash of freckles across his nose and under his eyes. His skin is a light tan color with little to no hair on his arms, legs, or face. His eyes are a dark green and his hair is a dirty blonde color, short and cut in choppy layers, typically done by himself with a pair of safety scissors. Suffice it to say he doesn't care much about his appearance, which is also reflected in his clothing. Mitch prefers to wear faded, tattered jeans paired with a random T-shirt and a dark gray zipper hoodie. He always wears a plain black beanie, which helps to mask noise somewhat and hide his earplugs if and when he has to put them in. His voice is low and quiet and he typically chooses his words carefully- the last thing he wants is for a conversation to escalate or voices to be raised. Mitch is a quiet person, which is understandable given his fear of loud noise. He prefers to be alone and not talk to people, usually reading a book or (quietly!!!) listening to calming music. He's perfectly capable of socializing but chooses not to except with close friends, which are few and far between. Mitch finds it hard to trust people after the life of rejection and lies that he's lived and this may never change- the one person he trusts is himself, and it's been good enough for him all these years. He's very unsure of himself and often seems cowardly, refusing to face or deal with his problem to the point of inserting earplugs when heading into the city to deal with all the noise. To clarify, regular sounds like talking and cars driving by don't bother him, but he's so afraid of the noise level rising or being caught off guard by a loud sound that he prefers to just block out all the noise and not take the risk. Mitchell was left to an orphanage soon after birth- his mother was a teenager unprepared for the responsibility of raising a child and his father ditched her after he heard the news. Mitch doesn't know where they are now, and to be honest he doesn't care. They left him and no amount of apologies or excuses can fix that in his eyes. He spent his childhood being bounced from one home to another and between orphanages. No one was ready or prepared to deal with someone with his unique fear and as a result he was never in a single home or with a single family for more than a year. This rough childhood came to an end when he got old enough to be an independent adult, but little changed for him- the work environment was always just a little too loud for him or something would happen and he would have a breakdown, quit or get fired, and be back on the streets again. When he heard the Company could erase his fears, he jumped at the opportunity and promptly volunteered.

mkay~ ^^ I have a character idea in mind, but deciding on a workable phobia is difficult,, I was thinking maybe cryophobia (intense cold), Nyctophobia (night/darkness), orrr maybe algophobia would be fun to play with. I'm not sure so opinions would be welcome. xD

here's my form~ i hope it's ok, this guy is kind of still a work in progress so be warned that some things might end up changing x"D
Jaxon Caldwell | age 24 | male | pansexual Odynokinesis: the ability to manipulate physical and mental pain. Algophobia: an extreme and irrational fear of pain. Jaxon is what you’d call…a bit of a trainwreck. Yeah, a disaster this guy is, with an untamed personality and an untidy appearance that easily suggests he goes through his day looking the exact same way he rose from bed that morning. To start off, he stands at an impressive 6 feet tall, with a lean if not lanky build, basically all long limbs. He has a tendency to slouch, however, making him appear not quite as tall as he actually is. His skin tone is medium-brown and unblemished aside from a few darker freckles across the bridge of his nose. Jaxon’s hair is a significantly darker shade of brown than his skin, almost appearing black in some lighting, and is a tad bit on the longer side where some strands just barely brush his neck. Typically, its styled in a tousled, devil-may-care sort of fashion despite his insistence that he does, in fact, run a comb through it fairly often. His eyes are, bluntly, unimpressive – a simple and expected shade of brown. As for his attire, well…I did say that his appearance is generally untidy and that’s the truth in his choice of clothing, which is all slapped together without much thought. As for his personality, the first thing people tend to notice is that he is warm. Friendly and talkative, Jaxon is an easy person to speak to and befriend, if not a little too loud and prone to sarcastic comments and humor. However, he keeps people at an emotional distance that is not so easily apparent. He looks like the kind of cool guy who doesn’t care about anything (and perhaps he’d like to maintain that image a bit too much), but he’s actually quite observant and attentive to the needs and problems of others. To a point. Yet he never says anything about himself, never tries to involve himself too much, and is quick to change the subject if anything gets “personal”. Naturally, because of this, he does not do well with “feelings” and though he’s a good listener, it’s probably not a good idea to ask his advice on very serious, emotionally heavy matters. Jaxon is a bit of a tease, or a coward, in some sense. Fake, if you will. He makes himself approachable but if things get too heavy or uncomfortable with a person, he’ll bail on them completely. Contrary to what you’d expect from someone like him, Jaxon is incredibly cautious outside of social situations and very indecisive. He thinks far too much and far too long about anything that could possibly result in him getting hurt. Although he’s gotten better since his late teenage years, Jaxon spent the majority of his life in and out of hospitals due to a sickly nature and weak constitution. He’s been pricked and prodded at so many times he’s lost count and started dreading the idea of hospitals and hating himself for being so frail and unnaturally sensitive to pain. It was impossible for him to understand why a simple paper cut could hurt so much and send him into tears; it was hard for anybody to understand. His parents were not poor by any means, but he’s always felt intensely guilty for the medical bills and his relationship with them has become distant over the years. Because of his frequent hospital visits, Jaxon was often absent from school and his grades (and more importantly, his friendships) suffered as a result. He struggled all throughout his school years playing catch-up that it got to a point in his junior year where he decided it would be better to drop out. He had since gotten his GED and made a struggling career out of indie music and playing in plazas or cafes under the name “Jingo”. However, although he’d gotten much less sick in adulthood he was still incredibly, uncomfortably afraid pain, of even the tiniest of minor injuries turning into major ones; it was a fear that refused to go away and one breakdown later had him deciding to participate in the “Company’s” experiment, hoping that if they couldn’t fix the intensity of any pain, they’d at least be able to make the idea much less terrifying, make him much less cautious, and help him enjoy life the best he could.

just the forms left now, yes! gumball is supposedly going to be gone for a while, so I'll leave her spot claimed for her for up to a week but we won't have to wait for her. that leaves just Salted Squid's before we're all ready to begin!

( here's what I think we'll do, those of us who have our forms done and sorted can start getting to know each other's characters and we'll give the others until sunday to get their up, at which point we open the spots back up. does anyone have a problem with that? if so, please do let me know ^^ )
