I am not taking prefix or suffix suggestions at this time. I still have a list I need to get through, but it's unlikely that an update will be coming soon, as I've started college full-time. Thanks for your understanding! WelcomeHi there! This is my guide for how to name warrior cats, and also includes a database of sorts for name components and their meanings. If you have any questions, fire away! Table of Contentsinsert here Naming RulesThis is how I prefer to name warrior cats, but it doesn’t exactly fit with canon. I would say it’s probably semi-traditional; it’s not as strict on suffix rules as some traditionalists, but it still is highly structured. How Prefixes WorkPrefixes should: -Describe general appearance. Ideally, it would be a combination of color and pattern. You can name for either separately (preferably color), though, as well as size, if extreme one way or the other. Even though prefixes like Tiny- or Tall- are okay, it’s better to use ones that imply coloring, like Ant- or Boulder-, so even if the kit grows up to be average in size, the prefix will still fit. Another possibility, which should come in preference after all the other reasons, is coat texture – if especially unusual, you can name for it, but be very sparing with prefixes like that. Another thing you can include, but must be paired with some appearance factor, is an event at birth (e.g. a white kit born during a snowstorm named Blizzardkit). -Ignore any minor features. If black cat has a white chest and paws, you can still name it Night- or Dark- if you want to. -Be given shortly after birth (within a week or so). Before you know it, the kits will be walking and talking, and they should have names before they reach that point. Prefixes should not: -Describe eye color. All kits’ eyes are blue-gray until they’re a few moons old. -Highlight a birth defect. You don’t want to predetermine the suffix and not give the cat a chance to earn a skill-based suffix. Also, name-change-type names should really only be given to adult cats who can consent to it. -Describe personality or skills. That’s the suffix’s job! :3 -Describe actions made by the kit. Most kits are noisy and squirmy, and as for the ones that aren’t, they usually aren’t feeling well. -Be general terms, like Bird- or Flower-. There are too many possibilities for what appearance they could represent. How Suffixes WorkSuffixes should: -First and foremost, represent an exceptional skill. -Highlight personality, if no skills are especially notable. -Honor the achievement of being a competent warrior, if no one skill is exceptional and no personality traits match existing suffixes. If this is the case, additional descriptors for appearance are acceptable. Suffixes should not: -Be too specific, as far the word goes. For example, use -flower instead of -poppy or -bird instead of -hawk. -Describe eye color. There are usually more noticeable things than eye color to name for. -Be adjectives. This is mostly just personal preference with me, I like my suffixes to all be nouns. I feel like it makes more sense that way. A Brief Word on Name ChangesI want to say this up front: Name changes are not cruel and dishonorable, unless they are given entirely without the cat’s consent. Name changes should be given to honor a cat’s strength in dealing with a significant injury. On the post below about name changes, I’ll go into all of the details. Miscellaneous Rules-No compound words, as warrior names are already compound words -No sacred/important objects, e.g. Sun-, Moon-, or a word used in a Clan's name -No habitats in names, as they are huge and a little grand for just one cat to be named after. They do, however, make great Clan names. Creating a Name SystemI’ve posted my own system here as a reference, but it’s much better to design a naming system that’s tailored to your Clan-world and preferences, so I’ll briefly give a few questions that should jump-start the planning process. If you have any suggestions for additional questions to add here, let me know! SettingWhere is the Clan set? (important for the pool of prefixes you’ll draw from) Will the Clan know words for any Twoleg objects? Word ChoiceAre any words taboo (e.g. sacred objects or parts of Clans’ names) for use as name parts? Can compound words (e.g. woodpecker or hedgehog) be used as name parts? PrefixesWhat exactly is a justifiable reason for a prefix? Is it okay to have synonymous prefixes (e.g. Gorse- and Furze-)? SuffixesWhat is notable enough to warrant its own suffix? How specific do you want your suffixes to get? Is it okay to have multiple suffixes mean the same thing? What kind of words can be suffixes? AcknowledgementsI have been inspired by many traditional and semi-traditional namers both on the forums and from other guides online (especially Serpentheart on the old forums and the Ailuronymy blog). Without some of them in particular, I would never have become the warrior name nerd that I am now. And thank you to everyone who commented on and "liked" my old guide, I really appreciate it. The image in the banner is a stock photo. Thanks to the folks who've contributed names or otherwise helped out: ~Cinderfrost~, Streamstar of CloudClan, Moondust340, Swiftbelly2, Tiger$talk, Miserysight, raccoonstep, Ɲємσ, Exodus Atticus

Prefixes Sorted AlphabeticallyI would recommend checking any plant or animal prefixes with those in the specific area where the Clan is located, to make sure they’re used accurately (like don't have your desert cat named Orcapaw). I only list here what’s likely to be fairly widespread in Europe and North America. Note on fur colors: I use “golden” to mean what are properly cream cats, because that’s how I see the terminology in the Warriors series. I also see brown tabbies as the way that term is used in the cat fancy (brown to gray with black stripes). And "tortoiseshell" without any other qualifications means the standard black and ginger combination. Note on the "fancy" color terms: Some people may find them a little weird (I admit I'm a little doubtful myself if cats would differentiate between so many hues), but I can't see anything really wrong with using them, so that's why they are there. Note on "exotic" big cats: Use these prefixes only if they're part of the Clan's mythos. Otherwise, how would the cats know what tigers are? ~A~ Amber – ginger or golden Ant – black or brown, possibly very small size Ash – gray ~B~ Bat – dark brown Bee – golden, probably a tabby Beetle – typically brown or black, may be patterned in some way Beige – golden Bistre – very dark gray or black Bittern – brown tabby or tortoiseshell Black – self-explanatory Blaze – ginger Bleak – light gray Blizzard – white Blue – blue-gray Bole – dark brown Boulder – gray to brown, possibly patterned and/or large in size Bright – probably white with some lighter color, most likely ginger or golden Brindle(d) – a very brindled tortoiseshell and/or tabby Bronze – reddish brown Brook – gray to brown, possibly a tabby Brown – self-explanatory Buff – golden ~C~ Capercaillie – brown tabby or black Cheetah – golden, likely spotted Chukar – gray or gray-brown, possibly tortoiseshell Cinder – gray Cinereous – gray-brown Cinnabar – ginger Cloud – white or pale gray Copper – ginger or reddish brown Cormorant – black, possibly with a small amount of white Cougar – golden or gray-brown Cream – golden Creek - brown to gray, possibly a tabby Crow – black Curl(y) – curly coat ~D~ Dandelion – golden or pale gray Dapple(d) – tortoiseshell or spotted tabby Dark – any especially dark color Dawn – pale gray and/or golden Dew(y) – silver-gray Drift – white (used re: snow) Drizzle – gray, possibly a tabby Dusk – dark gray, maybe with some ginger Dust(y) – light brown or gray ~E~ Eagle – brown, possibly with a little white Egret – white Eider – black-and-white or brown tabby Ember – gray tortoiseshell Evening – gray, possibly with some golden markings ~F~ Falcon – gray tabby, maybe with white Fallow – light brown Fire – ginger Flame – ginger Fleck(ed) – a particularly flecked tortoiseshell or ticked tabby Fly – gray to black Fog – pale gray Frost – white Fulmar – gray or gray-and-white Fulvous – ginger Fuzz(y) – unusually fuzzy coat texture ~G~ Gadwall – brown tabby or gray that may have faint tabby markings Gannet – white, possibly with some black Garganey – gray-brown tabby Ginger – self-explanatory Glaucous – light gray Gold(en) – self-explanatory Goosander – black-and-white or gray Goose – gray-brown, possibly with white Grass – golden or light brown tabby Gray/Grey – self-explanatory Grebe – tortoiseshell, black-and-white, or gray-brown Gull – gray-and-white ~H~ Hail – very pale gray to white; Prefixes Sorted by ColorIf you already know what your cat looks like, but you want some easy prefix ideas, you’ve found the right spot! Suffixes Sorted by Skill/PersonalityIf you’d like to compare suffixes for each skill and personality side-by-side, this is the place to be! Here I treat suffixes within each category (except average) as synonymous, but you may like to come up with more subtle distinctions between each suffix for your own use. For more details on each suffix, refer to the alphabetical section. ~AGILITY~ bird flight tail wing ~ANIMAL PREFIX + MANNERISMS/GAIT~ step ~AVERAGE~ (Pattern suffixes should only be used if the prefix doesn’t imply pattern, otherwise the name gets redundant) coat dapple face feather fleck fur patch pelt puddle speck(le) splash spot(s) stripe tuft vine ~CALM~ cloud dusk mist pond pool ~CHEERFUL~ dawn light rise shine ~CLIMBING~ branch rise tree ~DETERMINED~ frost root ~FIGHTING~ blaze claw fall fire flame strike swipe ~HUNTING~ pad shade shadow stalk whisker whisper ~HUNTING AND FIGHTING~ fang talon tooth ~JUMPING~ jump leap sky spring ~INTELLIGENCE~ frost spark ~LOYALTY TO MORAL CODE~ heart ~MEDICINE CAT, EXCEPTIONAL~ berry leaf root ~RAISING KITS~ blossom flower petal ~SENSES~ (These cats are likely very observant and good at tracking or being sentries) ear eye(s) gaze nose path ~SPEED~ breeze dash foot leg wind ~STORMY PERSONALITY~ spark storm ~SWIMMING~ (If other bodies of water in the territory seem more appropriate for use, don’t feel limited to just the ones here) brook creek fin gill stream water

Other PrefixesThese are prefixes, or meanings for prefixes, that I prefer not to use. Some of these prefixes may perfectly acceptable under my system, but are only in this list because they are something that would not be widespread in North America or Europe. However, other people may find them useful, so they are here for reference. Prefixes are sorted alphabetically. ~A~ Amber – amber eyes ~B~ Blue – blue eyes Brine – gray (possibly with white); hope that the kit will become a strong swimmer; eye color ~C~ Coral – light-colored or perhaps reddish Crater – large size ~E~ Ecru – golden ~G~ Gale – born on a particularly windy day Glade – probably a lighter-colored cat, or simply in honor of the local territory Green – green eyes ~L~ Lava – ginger fur or hot temper Lemon – pale cream or golden coat with a possible yellow tint; also possibly gray-brown tabby Luster – shine in the fur, or perhaps a wish for the cat to be something ~M~ Magma – ginger fur or hot temper Marsh – dark color, probably brown Meadow – most likely tortoiseshell or torbie, something colorful ~P~ Pink – strikingly pink nose ~R~ Reef – colorful markings, or in honor of the local territory River – in honor of RiverClan ~S~ Sea – gray (possibly with white); hope that the kit will become a strong swimmer; eye color Shadow – in honor of ShadowClan Swamp – dark color, probably brown; or in honor of the local territory ~T~ Thunder – in honor of ThunderClan, or perhaps born during a thunderstorm ~W~ Wind – in honor of WindClan, or perhaps born on a windy day

Name ChangesWhen a cat survives a major injury, he or she may be honored for their strength in overcoming the suffering by receiving a name change. However, an injured cat is not by any means required to get a name change. That is the only reason why I find Brightheart’s and Crookedstar’s injury-based names unacceptable: Because they did not consent to such a momentous change. If Brightheart had been renamed Lostface later, and was happy about it, that would have been fine. Basically, if an injury is sufficiently major to be very noticeable upon first seeing the cat, then a name change may be appropriate. A name change results in a correlating name – in other words, the prefix describes the suffix. It represents the injury, not how the injury was received (e.g. Tornpelt works but not Foxscar); because of that, I do not include -scar as a name change suffix. The name list is just sorted prefixes, with the most likely suffixes along with each prefix. Be aware that some combinations, while possible, would mean such severe injuries that the cat would be more likely to die than to live long enough for a name change. ~NAMES~ Arch – back, foot, leg Bent – back, foot, leg, neck, tail Broken – foot, jaw, leg, nose, tail Claw(ed) – belly, ear, eye, face, flank, fur, nose, pelt, throat Cloudy/Clouded – eye Crooked – back, foot, jaw, leg, mouth, nose, tail Dead – eye, foot, leg, tail Half – ear, face, tail Jagged – ear Kink(ed) – foot, leg, nose, tail Lame – foot, leg Lost – ear, eye, face, foot Mangled – belly, ear, eye, face, flank, foot, leg, tail Missing – ear, eye, face, foot, tail No – ear, eye, tail Odd – foot, jaw, leg, nose, tail One – ear, eye Ragged – belly, ear, face, flank, fur, pelt, tail Rip(ped) – belly, ear, face, flank, foot, fur, leg, pelt, tail Scar(red) – belly, ear, nose, face, flank, fur, pelt, foot, leg, throat Shred(ded) – ear, face, flank, fur, pelt, tail Split – ear, face, nose Stumpy – foot, leg, tail Tattered – belly, ear, face, flank, fur, pelt, foot, leg, tail Three – foot, leg Torn – belly, ear, eye, face, flank, fur, pelt, foot, leg, tail, throat Twisted – foot, jaw, leg, mouth, neck, tail White – eye
