What was Firestar doing when he made Ashfur Lionblaze's mentor? He must've known that Ashfur was still angy about being rejected by Squirrelflight, right? It seemed like he was trying to stir up old memories. Not only did he put Lionblaze in danger of mentor abuse, but he also might've caused the Ashfur freak out, when he made him mentor the kit of his ex-girlfriend. It seems like Firestar should've known better.

I know right! Maybe the Erins did it for drama, but assuming we're in the world of the book, it sounds pretty stupid.

I actually get this choice. I believe Firestar noticed there was still some tension between Ashfur and Squirrelflight. In a Clan, everyone must be untied. If they're not, it can lead to problems within the Clan, the battlefield and with other Clans. So, it'd make sense for Firestar to have Lionpaw's mentor be Ashfur in an attempt to settle past problems.

Firestar can be oblivious to others feelings, so it's possible he didn't notice how Ashfur felt or just figured he was over Squirrelflight by the time Lionblaze came along.
Also there were so many apprentices during this time that mentors were tight. Bramblestar, Dustpelt, Sandstorm, Cloudtail, Thornclaw and Spiderleg all had apprentices of their own. Graystripe was still missing. Brightheart was already picked out for Jayfeather. Whitewing and Birchfall had just become warriors so they were too inexperienced for apprentices just yet. Stormfur and Brook were still trying to adapt to the Clan, and Brook couldn't mentor anyways.
So that just leaves Ashfur, Brackenfur, and Sorreltail. Out of those three Firestar probably figured Ashfur would be the best match for Lionblaze.

Firestar maybe thought that Ashfur mentoring Lionpaw would ease the tension between him, Squirrelflight "and Brambleclaw". But I also feel it was an excuse for Lionpaw to fight Ashfur with unsheathed claws during a training session gone wrong. It just seemed as if the authors had that scene planned for awhile.

I always thought that Squirrel and Bramble kept that whole love triangle incident on the down low, so I guess Fire and the others just shrugged it off. It didn't seem as public as the Dove and Bumble relationship.

I always felt like there was a chance Firestar didn't know, because he has been shown to be oblivious to love before... Not to mention he has to take care of the entire Clan, so he has more to focus on than his daughter's love triangle...
