In Character --- Please not another group project, please not another group project... Alice prayed to whoever would listen. Her eyes were shut tight and she could not stare Professor McGonagall in the face. That metaphorical witch...because obviously all the females who would meddle with magic were witches. She knew the classmates in here, and she can only say she didn't mind three of her fellow students. She loved them dearly, and probably the only people she would ever love. If there was a group project, hopefully Professor McGonagall wouldn't assign the groups. She had a tendency to organize them according to house. Alice could not survive another project with those horrible children. They always teased her for being nervous. She knew she had severe paranoia, Alice would not lie to herself, but it wasn't her fault she wasn't wanted at home. That her father came home drunk every night and would beat her with a belt almost as consistently. That her mother only sat back and watched. But when she came to Hogwarts, she was able to get away from that the majority of the year. The scars on her back will forever be a reminder.
"Ms. Taylor." Alice heard Professor McGonagall say her name in that same icy tone. Alice opened her brown eyes slowly, like she woke up after a long sleep and peered up past her black framed glasses, her eyes were wide as she hated being called out in front of class. "Y-yes?" Her voice shook and hands trembled underneath her desk. "Are you alright? Do you need the nurse?" McGonagall didn't sound very concerned, more rude if anything. Like she was sick of seeing Alice in class. "N-no ma'am..." Alice looked down at her desk, just wanting to disappear from school, from the world. "Look at her, that Taylor is afraid of her own shadow! She doesn't need a nurse, she needs mental help." One of the Gryffindors sneered. She tried to ignore them but Alice bit her lip, almost making it bleed. Not that anyone could see, she was up in the front and her chin length brown hair blocked the view of her face.

Carris Welfire sat in class. He wanted to be done being picked on all the time by other Slytherins. It's not like he wasn't ambitious. Just... he didn't know how to meet his goals. He had a lot of goals, getting onto the Quidditch team, Getting better grades at all of his classes, those were only a few. However, his biggest one was fitting in with the other Slytherins. Slytherins had a reputation of being the nasty ones. He, of course, didn't want to be a jerk, but some ambitition didn't hurt either. The other Slytherins bullied him every day. Not like he asked to be in his house. He wished he could have an invisibilty cloak, and just faade away. There was only three other people who understood how he felt, and they were his best- and only- friends.

Jonathan Keddle sat in the very back of the classroom, the seats on either side of him noticeably vacant. It was something he pretended not to mind, focusing on the carefully written notes in front of him instead. But it did sting, just a little. He played idly with his quill as McGonagall began outlining the assignment, already aware of other students glancing around the room, sharing little looks and nods as they silently began to sort out their groups. One Gryffindor girl glanced over at him for a moment and he met her eyes with an even stare that was probably a touch too intense for her liking, given the way she immediately averted her eyes. His jaw tightened and his quill nearly snapped in his hand as he stared down at his desk. It was fine. Everything would be fine. He would do the work he had to for whatever group she assigned him to and would do his best not to get in everyone else's way. Unless, of course, they could choose their own partners, which would be ideal. If they could chose their groups, perhaps this wouldn't be so bad after all.

But...what if to fit in, he had to be mean. No, he couldn't be mean. He didn't want to be mean. Whenever he tried to be mean, he'd talk in an all quiet voice, look down, and apologize later. Very mean. That was sarcasm. He kicked his desk leg in anger and frustration, though he immediately regretted it. Now his foot hurt. It was just... so hard to fit in.

Unlike Jonathan, Skylar was in the very front of the classroom, surrounded by the other Ravenclaws. It wasn't like she wanted to be there; she didn't have much of a choice. Rule Number One of fitting in: sit with your own House. Not that Skylar Brennan could ever fit in. Not when she was trapped inside her own head; when she could think, but couldn't speak the right words. Sometimes, it was especially frustrating. She wasn't bullied, really, but it was hard to make friends when the first word you said out loud was the wrong one. So people just left her alone. She turned, hearing some of the Gryffindors making fun of Alice. She gave her friend a sympathetic look; it was really the best she could do at the moment. She'd rant about it the best that she could later, but not right now. Right now, it was best to just keep her mouth shut.

In Character --- "That's enough Mr. Friesenhahn." Professor McGonagall silenced the Gryffindor that teased her. As a teacher, it was an obligation to stop any sort of bullying no matter the student it is being directed toawrds. So yes, that included Alice. She heard the Gryffindor whisper to his peers after he was silenced by Professor McGonagall. Alice continued to stare down at her desk, but looked up to see Skylar give her a sympathetic glance. She didn't return a hurt look, Alice didn't want pity, she just wanted to go away and hide from all the horrible things the world had to offer.
"Now, students. You're project will be a very large one, in which I decided would be completed the fastest by working in groups. Of your choosing..." the tone the Professor used made it sound like she knew she was going to regret it. But for Alice, that was the best news she has heard all day. If Alice wasn't so quiet, she would stand up and bring Carris, Skylar, and Jonathan together in one side of the classroom. The oddballs. The freaks. The opposite of their stereotypical houses. That would be a sight.

Carris made one of his hands in a fist and punched the air above him "Yesss!" he exclaimed, which got him a few few looks from the other students, and Carris muttered, "Sorry". Now he could pair up with Jonathon, Skylar, and Alice, and to him, that was just pure awesomeness

Jonathon's shoulders relaxed slightly and he breathed a small sigh of relief. He looked up from his desk to attempt to catch the eyes of his friends. There was a moment of panic as he hoped they would look his way and give him a sign that they were all good to work together. He didn't want to be left out again, there were only so many excuses one could come up with to do group work alone. He couldn't get stuck on the outside, he really couldn't. The whispers were growing louder, mostly due to other students working out their groups, though some seemed to be directed at Alice and he clenched his fists as he glared at the Gryffindors who seemed determined to embarrass her. If they tried anything else, they'd see how much his muggle friends had taught him about fisticuffs.

The moment that McGonagall dismissed the class to work, Skylar sprang to her feet, eager to begin. For her, the transfiguration part of this assignment would be difficult; given her condition, she did most of her spells nonverbally, and transfiguration spells were rather complex. But the written paper sounded like a cinch. There's no way I'll fail this assignment! Feeling confident, she hurried toward Alice, who was closest to her. "Al!" She called. "Work together?" Most of what Skylar did say out loud was like that. Short, choppy phrases, many of them not even sentences. It was why she hated speaking so much; it made her sound dumb. She cringed a little bit at the sound, wishing she could take it back.

(and he's not exactly a small dude either. Ol' Jonny boy knows people think he's nasty, might as well use that to keep em from bugging his buds Also, Jingle, the kitten in your avvie reminds me so much of my kitten, it's so adorable. Similar color and everything)
Jon glared at the Gryffindors as the snickers grew louder, staring them down. One or two met his gaze before hurriedly looking away, elbowing their friends. But as soon as Alice and Skylar approached, there was a visible change in his body language. He stood and dragged over an extra couple of chairs for the others, arranging them in a rough circle. Sitting back down, he gave them a small smile, "So how we gonna divide up the work?" He didn't mind doing the majority of it, he put a lot of pride in his schoolwork. It was one of the few things in his life he had any control over, might as well put some effort into it.

Carris gave a quick smile to Alice. "Awesome" He said. What were they supposed to do again? Carris wasn't really paying attention when Ms.McGonnagal had told them what they were doing. He would just stay quiet for now, and maybe he would figure out what they were doing eventually.
