(( note that if any romance begins with my character(s), I prefer mxf ))
It was a Sunday afternoon, a little after four pm, and it was a fairly quiet day. The trees were already looking empty and brown and red leaves littered the ground. It was a little dark because the sky was cloudy, hindering the sun, and it was just cold enough that you could see your breath in the air. It felt like this year went by too fast - it was already a week into November and Christmas would be coming up soon as well. On one side of the highschool building was a football field and on the other side was a second football field along with a basketball court and a tennis court. The tennis court was overgrown with weeds and wasn't used anymore anyway. Austin Farr was the only person at the basketball court at the time, his water bottle, phone, and sweater left in the grass as he practiced. He dribbled his basket ball towards the hoop, eyebrows narrowed slightly in concentration. Twisting around an imaginary opponent, the fifteen year old shot the ball and grinned to himself as the ball bounced off the backboard and into the net-less rim. He was getting better at playing and quite happy about that.

Tori was sitting nearby, one hand twirling a thin blue snare stick mindlessly, her other hand on her check, both feet planted on either side of a book that she was reading. The girl had short black hair that was hidden under a soft black beanie, wearing a pale blue University of North Carolina sweater and black leggings. The girl was new here, her family moving here since she was going to a hospital nearby and her family decided to move her closer to it. Tova, her black and tan Shiba Inu, shifted slightly, leaning into her again. The sixteen year old reached over and patted her absentmindedly. The one year old pup let out a happy yap before leaping up, seeing the basketball, watching it with fascination.

Austin began again with a layup and after that he tried to make a shot a little farther away from the hoop, but as he shot it the ball didn't even go close to getting in. "Ahh, it slipped." He hissed out as the ball bounced out of the court, shaking his head as he started to jog towards where the ball had rolled to, but he stopped as he noticed the girl there. He didn't even realize her until then, hadn't even heard the dog bark. "Hey!" He lifted his hands and clapped them once to get her attention. "Can you hand me that?" Austin nodded towards the ball that had settled in the grass not far from her. As he waited, the teen's dark brown eyes looked her over briefly, checking to see if he recognized her from school. He couldn't recall her name or if he'd ever seen her.

(( In the Northeast. maybe Ohio? ))
Austin lifted his hand and caught the ball, grinning as he turned back towards the hoop. "Thanks." He was already dribbling the ball as he thanked her, focused again on the task of getting the ball into the basket. He played for about another minute, missing a few shots but otherwise he thought he did okay, then he grabbed the ball and turned in the girl's direction again. He walked towards her and the dog slowly, holding out a hand for the dog to sniff. He didn't ask to pet her, she seemed friendly enough. "Hello!" He greeted the creature warmly, scratching her head quickly. After he pet the dog, Austin took a seat on the ground a few yards away from the girl, placing his ball between his feet. He was breathing a little heavily from running around, but he had mostly caught his breath now. "Hi." He gave the girl a quiet greeting, glancing up towards the sky as he tried to make a guess to what time it was.

A little surprised at the way this girl addressed him, Austin tilted his head and met her blue gaze with wide brown eyes. "Austin. Who are you?" He responded, turning his attention towards her dog again. His hand absently rolled his basketball back and forth between his feet. His black shoes were a bit dusty and one had a tiny hole in them, but they were his play shoes so he didn't take notice.

Austin nodded in response to her answer. So she just moved here, that's one reason why he didn't recognize her. "Where'd you move?" He asked, simply curious as to whether her house was near his. His house was only a few minutes walking distance away, on McCreary street. Thinking of a better question, he then asked, "What grade are you in?" As he held out his hand towards the dog and clicked his tongue softly. "Tova."

"Aww." Austin smiled at the dog, thinking it was quite adorable. He glanced up at Tori and shook his head when she offered him some of her snack. "Nah." He declined but smiled at the offer. When she mentioned it, he thought he must know where she moved in. It was right by his house too. "I live on McCreary, actually." He answered, pleased that he lived near her and she might have an idea of where his house was.

"Yup, I walk." Austin answered, lifting his ball off the ground and spinning on one finger. He could keep it spinning for about 15 seconds. "Maybe we could walk together tomorrow." He offered, guessing that she would be starting classes the next day and as the new girl she wouldn't know anybody. He didn't make a big deal out of it and brought it up casually, hoping she wouldn't be weirded out by the offer. He was just being friendly. Getting cold now, Austin stood up and walked over to where his stuff sat. He picked up his hoodie and slipped it over his head, putting his phone into the pocket before turning in Tori's direction again.

Austin laughed at her comment, nodding his head. "That works." He responded, bouncing his basketball off the ground. He knew people in band, they were pretty cool. He held the ball up and blinked in her direction. "Wanna play?" He asked, nodding his head towards the basketball hoop with a lopsided grin on his face.

Austin laughed. "Neither am i." He answered, walking closer and holding out a hand to help her to his feet. "It's not that hard, just throw the ball into the hoop." He encouraged.

"Oh, no." Austin laughed at her thought, shaking his head quickly. He watched as she threw the ball, but missed, the dog getting the ball as it bounced to the ground. "Nuuuu!" He hurried over and gently pushed the dog away in a playful manner, taking the ball and passing it back towards Tori. "Throw harder next time." He suggested, smiling widely.

Austin ran forward to catch the ball as it bounced off the rim, tipping in the ball before he turned to Tori. "Hey, you almost got it!" He laughed, tossing it back so she could try again.

"Eh," Austin shrugged his shoulders as he threw the basketball, barely missing the shot. "I'm not on any teams." He answered, glancing curiously in her direction. "I might like to be." He enjoyed playing basketball, also football. He was a little small, 5'5 and quite thin for his age, so that made him hesitant to be on the basketball team. "I played football when I was younger." He laughed then held up the basketball again. "We can play horse." He suggested, making a very simple shot and then tossing the ball to her so she could make it.

Austin smiled a bit, realizing he had to explain the game. "Yeah. One person makes a shot and if they make it, they next person has to make the exact shot. If they miss, they get the letter 'h', then it's their turn. Everytime they miss they get a letter and once they spell 'horse' they lose." He made the shot again when he finished explaining.

Austin made the shot and then passed her the ball. "Ok." He grinned, stepping back so she would be able to stand where he had.

"Aw, you have to leave?" He watched her go get her stuff and her dog, taking his phone out of his pocket for a moment to check what time it was. "Okay, bye." He turned to the basketball hoop, doing a few more shots. He missed all but one.
