Prologue
“They are wonderful.” Rainwhisker glanced tiredly up at Rowanflame, her mate, before turning her attention back to her kits.
“I couldn’t be happier.”
Rowanflame rested the tip of his tail on Rainwhisker’s shoulder with affection growing for the kits as they squirmed and suckled hungrily.
A cough racked Rainwhisker’s body, causing the she-cat to groan in pain. Between coughs, she tried to locate where the pain was coming from, but was cut off by another spasm, causing her kits to wail out in confusion. I can’t die. I haven’t even named my kits… Starclan please, let me at least tell my kits and Rowanflame goodbye.
Confused by the sudden cough, Rowanflame had gotten to his paws by now, scrambling to exit the nursery.
He flattened his ears, wasting no time to call out for help, any help. It didn’t matter to him, his mate was dying, Rainwhisker was dying. “Nettleheart! Heatherstar!” Rowanflame’s voice grew hoarse and after a few more times of calling, both Nettleheart and Heatherstar exited their dens, bewildered by the frantic Rowanflame, especially because it was moon-high.
“Rowanflame? What is the meaning of this?” Heatherstar’s voice was confused but soft and calm.
Nettleheart just watched Rowanflame with curious eyes, daring the deputy to speak.
“It’s Rainwhisker. I don’t think the kitting went well.” He flattened his ears, glancing at the nursery. “I don’t think we have any time to waste.”
“Is she coughing?” Nettleheart asked quickly, almost cutting Rowanflame off.
“Yes.” Rowanflame said quickly, growing irritated.
Heatherstar seemed to sense his distress and flicked her tail, moving towards the nursery at a brisk pace. “As Rowanflame has stated, we don’t have any time to waste Nettleheart.”
“I’ll get the herbs.” Nettleheart mumbled, hurrying into his den and grabbing whatever herbs could help. He knew that this was a case not many queens survived, if Rainwhisker wants to live, she would have to believe.
Rowanflame stopped dead in his tracks as he spotted Rainwhisker laying in a pool of red blood, panting heavily with her kits wrapped up close to her stomach with her tail. The she-cat’s grey coat was now a dark red brown as it soaked with the blood and her once blue eyes were now dull and greyish.
“Rowanflame.” Heatherstar set her tail on Rowanflame’s shoulder, trying to reassure the tom. Even she knew Rainwhisker couldn’t survive this, something must’ve happened during the kitting without her knowing it until it was too late.
“I’m here.” Nettleheart dropped the herbs, his jaw almost gaping in shock as he spotted Rainwhisker. “Move.” He demanded to Rowanflame.
“What-“ Rowanflame started to say something to retort back to his demand but was shushed by Heatherstar’s tail. Rowanflame gave a reluctant nod and backed up for Nettleheart, still not getting over the fact that this could be it for Rainwhisker.
“She isn’t responding Heatherstar. She’s breathing she just can’t hear or see us…” He said, forcing some herb remedy, including honey into the she-cat’s mouth.

Rainwhisker looked around herself, she wasn’t in the nursery with her kits. Instead she was in a meadow, with a forest in the distance. Glancing up at the sky, she noticed how it wasn’t moon-high anymore. It was sun-high instead. She started to panic, wanting to feel the comfort of Rowanflame and the motherly love for her kits.
A paw touched her shoulder and she stiffened, turning around to face whoever had approached her.
“It’s alright Rainwhisker.” The cat was a tom, one who she recognized to be Talonstar, Shadeclan’s leader before Heatherstar.
“Talonstar? Where am I and your alive?” Forgetting for a second about her previous state of pain, she was oblivious to where she was, Starclan.
A saddened look overtook the tom’s facial expression as he took a seat, wrapping his tail around his paws, he met her eyes with his piercing green eyes. “I’m not alive.” He said simply, “I’m in Starclan.”
As if everything had drained from her, she wavered on her paws, flattening her ears. “Oh. Then what am I doing here?” She regained her balance, her eyes flickering with worry and emotional pain.
“Your in Starclan.” Talonstar forced a light smile to reassure the
she-cat. “You’ll be able to see your family soon Rainwhisker, they all have their destinies to fulfill. You’ve done yours.”
“I—You mean I can’t go back?” More pain flickered in her eyes, making her blue eyes watery.
“I’m afraid you can’t go back Rainwhisker. But you will be able to watch your family from up here.” He forced another smile, motioning for Rainwhisker to follow him, further into Starclan. “Come with me.”

“She’s in Starclan now.” Nettleheart closed her eyes with his tail. “We’ll sit vigil for her tonight and in the morning, we’ll bury her.” He forced himself to meet Rowanflame’s eyes. Even though being the snappish and old medicine cat he was, he had a soft spot.
A pained cry erupted from Rowanflame as he sank down, burying his head in his paws, forgetting about his kits who had yet to open their eyes to see the scene.
“Rowanflame. I’ll find some she-cat to tend to the kits. They have a very slim chance of survival.” Even the once calming leader sounded distressed and worried for the tom.
All Rowanflame could say was, “I don’t want them.” His voice was thickened with sadness and at the same time, hollow with pain. As soon as he said that, another pang of distress made him erupt into another cry.
Heatherstar didn’t say anything, instead, giving a grave nod; she took the two kits away hurriedly from their dead mother and away from their hateful father.
