((Starter for anyone))
Fuzzypaw was crouched near the camp wall, her eyes narrowed and her tail flipping back and forth behind her. Pent-up energy fizzed in her paws as she watched the comings and goings of ShadowClan. Because of the Prey Maulers, she and Thistlestalk had kept their battle training within the camp walls, and she'd been tending to the queens and elders as usual. It'd been three sunrises since she'd been in the forest, and the energetic apprentice was feeling the strain of being cooped up.

It'd been three sunrises since she'd been in the forest, and the energetic apprentice was feeling the strain of being cooped up. Rustlepaw was seated at the edge of camp, though it was clear that she had been pacing around the perimeter of the camp wall, searching for any spots where she could feel or scent a gap. Longpaw and Lightpaw’s recent near-death escape from camp had made her extra cautious. Deep down, she felt a sense of guilt. Surely she should have been able to scent the prey-maulers before their initial presence with the torn up prey. If she couldn’t see, surely she had to make up for it by having the best tracking skills she could have. She shook the thought away for a moment though as she heard Fuzzypaw’s usual practicing come to a stop. She must have finished her personal training for the day. Wanting the distraction from her thoughts, she turned to pad in the other she-cat’s direction. “I’m guessing you feel pretty cooped up too, huh?” She asked.

Fuzzypaw blew out a puff of air, flattening her ears and wearing an ill-fitting irritated scowl.
"Yes," she meowed emphatically, flopping over onto her side and looking up at Rustlepaw, noticing her expression. "What about you? You've been pacing the camp for ages."

Mouseclaw's ducked back into camp after being relieved from guard duty. His eyes scanned the camp for the familiar pelt of Spiderfang. The tom looked unusually troubled.
Spottedpaw and Duskpaw dragged old moss out of the elder's den together, Falcontalon supervising from just outside the entrance of the den. The elder spoke to his young kin warmly, asking about their training.
Pearlkit batted at a mossball near the nursery, Hailkit tumbling around a few taillengths away. Cherryvine was settled outside the nursery entrance, keeping an eye on the kits as they played.
Mistkit was carefully making her way to the medicine cat den, making sure to only inch towards the entrance when Cherryvine wasn't looking. She peered inside with owlish eyes, a giddy sense overtaking her as the fresh scent of herbs wafted over.

She peered inside with owlish eyes, a giddy sense overtaking her as the fresh scent of herbs wafted over. Spiderfang had settled herself in her usual corner of camp, having joined some of the mentors in their battle practices earlier. Now that she was back in camp, she could quickly spot out her mate amongst the Clan, and tell that he was troubled. She stood to her paws, padding straight towards him. Her voice rumbled, rusty and steady as always. “Something’s on your mind, so I can tell you want to tell me something.” Opalmist hadn’t slept much since she had lost her connection to Starclan. If anything, she was more reserved and fleeting than ever, and far too distracted to notice Mistkit looking into the den.

Mouseclaw's eyes brightened considerably as Spiderfang approached as if her presence lifted half the weight off his shoulders. Mouseclaw let out a low chuckle, supposing he shouldn't be surprised at how well she could always read him. "Come sit somewhere quiet with me first." he murmured, brushing against her as he moved to a secluded shadow.
Mistkit scampered forward when neither Opalmist or Cherryvine told her to stop. Her fur puffed with excitement as she crept into the herb store. She scented the nearest leaf, wrinkling her nose at the pungent scent. Her mind reeled as she wondered what it could do for her clanmates.

Instead, she followed her mate to the secluded spot, mewing gruffly. “Do I need to claw somebody?” Opalmist finally snapped out of her stupor as soon as she heard the faint patter of a pawstep. She whipped her head around, surprised to see Mistkit right there, curiously looking at the herb store. The miserable she-cat cleared her throat, rasping. “Mistkit… Does your mother know you’re in here?”

The fur on her spine rippled at the thought facing one, hardly being able to imagine how fierce and powerful they could be. "But I guess there's no way we could know, you know? I mean, no cat in ShadowClan seems to know a thing about them..." She thumped her tail on the ground as an idea struck her. "What about the other Clans? Do you think Cedarstar would reach out to them to ask if they know anything?"

Mouseclaw shook his head with a huff, settling down in the shadows close beside her. "No, nothing like that. I was just thinking more about what Buckpaw said to me while we were training the other day after Cedarstar's announcement that we would be searching for Willowkit's family. We didn't search very hard for his when we brought him back to camp. I think it's troubling him, he doesn't remember anything from before he was found."
Mistkit's ears flattened as she looked at Opalmist guiltily. "No, of course she doesn't," she murmured, looking down at her paws. The little kit inched further away from the herbs, seeming to know they had to be treated very delicately. "Ashrock wouldn't teach me any more about herbs, so I wanted to come see them for myself."

For a moment, Rustlepaw wanted to quietly exclaim that surely she could have scented them sooner, but instead, she focused on Fuzzypaw’s other question. She hummed. “Cedarstar’s careful. After the gathering, he’s not so keen on the other leaders… but he has honor, and I know he would warn the other Clans if he felt it was needed. For all we know, the prey-maulers are only in Carrionplace.”

Spiderfang’s ear twitched as she listened, a muted concern in her orange eyes. Buckpaw was as much a son to her as he was to Mouseclaw, and the thought of his family being out there clawed at her too, deep down. She sighed. “It’s harder when there’s nothing to go off of. The last thing I’d ever want is him feeling like he’s got nobody in his corner. Do you think we should see if we can search for Buckpaw’s kin too?” Opalmist was silent, heart aching painfully as she realized then and there what this meant. She’d be blind to not see how Mistkit was well on the path of a Medicine Cat. The vision at the Moonstone rang in her ears, and she felt a desperate sense that she was running out of time. Sooner or later, everything would fall apart, but Shadowclan needed their Medicine Cats. She looked at Mistkit, swallowing down her fear and giving a small smile. “Don’t worry, Mistkit. I can tell you feel quite comfortable here… I can teach you some herbs. Do you want to learn all about them?”

"You're right," Fuzzypaw mewed quietly. "As horrible as it is that they seem to have set up camp here, it'd be worse if there were enough of them to torment all the Clans."
Fuzzypaw sat up to her haunches, oblivious to Rustlepaw's inner conflict. "Say, you smelled them? What do they smell like?"

Fuzzypaw sat up to her haunches, oblivious to Rustlepaw's inner conflict. "Say, you smelled them? What do they smell like?" “I was the first to scent them.” Rustlepaw admitted lightly, quickly answering to not have to dwindle on that statement. “They smelled awful, musky, like a fox or a dog drenched in crowfood…” She shook her head, grimacing as she could recall the scent on the mauled prey, and then at Carrionplace. “Cedarstar sent me back to get help, and I’m very happy that we made it in time… but I guess a part of me feels bad that I had to leave the patrol at Carrionplace.” She admitted.

"So you're the reason the kits are safe, at the end of it! That's amazing, Rustlepaw!" Fuzzypaw beamed. "I would have felt bad too, but it make sense...we're only apprentices, no way could we fight something so fierce and make out with our pelts intact!"

Mouseclaw sighed, looking conflicted. "He's been here so many moons now. If his family was around, don't you think there would have been more signs of them? It's just to him it looks like we didn't even try. I'd be happy if we ended up finding some of his family, but at the same time the thought of him leaving Shadowclan claws at my heart too."
Mistkit's eyes immediately brightened at Opalmist's offer, shaking her head yes furiously. "Will you Opalmist? Mama says I shouldn't get my hopes up cuz Shadowclan already has two medicine cats, but that doesn't mean I can't learn about herbs! Bumbleskip and Ashrock know about herbs and they're both warriors, so why can't I?"

Spiderfang looked pointedly at her mate, though her gruff voice was tinged with a soothing tone. “It’s different when we are not the ones who kitted him, or know where he came from. Whoever his family was, either they are very far away, or they were cruel enough to abandon him… but if he does leave, we have to remember that his life and his choices are his own, and we can’t stop that. We can do our best to prepare him for life, and make him strong.” She nodded, brushing close to her kind-hearted mate. “Of course you can learn.” Opalmist mewed with an almost forced expression, desperation churning in her. Maybe she could at least give Shadowclan one last solution before her fate caught up with her. She swallowed. “In fact, you can learn as much as you like from me. Who knows what fate has in store… Shadowclan may need another medicine cat, if anything were to happen to me and Snowdance, hm?”

Fuzzypaw reared up, swatting the air a few times before falling heavily to four paws again. " And we can climb. If those Prey-Maulers are really like dogs, there's no way they could get up a tree with such clumsy paws!"

But, I do worry. I did so terribly during the climbing training, I’m shocked that Cliffheart didn’t snap at me as much as he snapped at everyone else.” Rustlepaw sighed softly. “Speaking of that, I hope he didn’t hurt your feelings too badly. He was very unkind to you. I think he’s taking out his inner feelings on everyone…” She mourned.

"So what if it was?" Fuzzypaw meowed. "Since you can't see, you can smell stuff the rest of us can't. That's a great ability to have, to smell trouble coming from so far away!"
The cheery apprentice's sunny disposition faltered at the mention of Cliffheart. "Uh, yeah, that..." she meowed. "I still feel really bad about ending the training early...and making him so mad. I probably should've just listened!" She chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. She really hoped the fresh nest had lessened his foul mood somewhat, if he'd even noticed.

Cliffheart trained Cedarstar, and of all Cedarstar’s told me about his time with Cliffheart, it sounds very odd. I’m sure Spottedpaw’s told you this, but it wasn’t your fault, Fuzzypaw.” A gently concerned look crossed Rustlepaw’s face. “Something went wrong, wrong enough for Cliffheart to not act like himself.”

He seemed really angry that Bumbleskip hadn’t come to check on Hazelblaze. I never scent him near the nursery either, and I can tell Cherryvine’s voice changes when the kits ask about him. I know they both lost their mates in the fire, but… I don’t know, you would think they would want to be closer to their remaining kin, not farther.” She shook her head. “I can’t imagine my mother or father not being there for me, it’s a scary thought.”

Fuzzypaw's ears fell, her blue eyes downcast. "That's so sad..." she mewed. "To lose kin...I can't imagine how sad I'd be if I lost you, or Spottedpaw, or Duskpaw, or Thistlestalk."
She leaned forward to gently touch her nose to Rustlepaw's ear in a show of comfort. "Thankfully you'll never have to imagine it, huh? Your parents are so amazing; I think Spiderfang would sooner take down every Prey Mauler herself than willingly leave one of her kits behind," she giggled, thinking of the fierce she-cat with admiration.

Rustlepaw purred softly at Fuzzypaw’s show of affection, and she admitted. “I can’t imagine losing you either, Fuzzypaw. You’re as close as a sister to me. Just like Buckpaw.” She admitted, grateful at how easily Spiderfang and Mouseclaw took in cats and treated them like their own. She chuckled. “My mother’s fierce enough to scare anyone away from us, but deep down she’s really got a big heart, for all of Shadowclan.” She hoped her knowledge of Spottedpaw’s feelings for Fuzzypaw weren’t clear to the other she-cat, at least not from her. After all, that was Spottedpaw’s feelings to admit.

Fuzzypaw's ears warmed with Rustlepaw's admission, and she couldn't help the purr that bubbled in her throat. "Yeah? I've always wanted a sister," she meowed softly, oblivious to the potential hidden meaning. "I can tell she's a secret softie, and Mouseclaw too."
She quickly fluffed out her fur, suddenly embarrassed. "Don't tell her I said that though!"
Continuing, she tilted her head. "I should get to know Buckpaw better. He's like me, he doesn't remember anything before ShadowClan..." With this, a pang of pain shot through her head and she sucked in a breath before shaking it off.
