"Do you think he can do it?" Whorlpaw asked with a tilt of her head. "Train Rustlepaw? I saw Spiderfang training her. She would've been a good teacher."
"What's wrong?" Closesky sat down beside him and curled his tail over his paws. "It isn't like you to be moping over here."
"It's more than just a vow of silence, furball." Houndthroat snorted. "You're responsible for guarding the Clan. You have to listen to everything that happens in the woods and be able to determine if its a threat or not. If it is, you warn the Clan."
Smokestorm shook his head. "You worry for naught. You would be a great mentor, Snakesong. I know it."
Cedarstar let his gaze trail around the area as she described everything. "The forest is still scarred from the fire and it will be a long time before it's fully healed." He flicked his ear and did his best not to glance down at his scars. At least Rustlepaw couldn't see them. "The territory feels different in all times of weather and the ground is always changing to the will of the marsh. You'll need to learn to read it. First, I want you to know your way to the Burnt Sycamore. That's where we'll be having most of our lessons and I won't always be able to lead you there every time. Besides, I'm sure you'd like to training there with the other apprentices when I'm busy with my other duties."

Duskpaw scampered along beside the two, "I think it will be good for the clan to have young kits again too. It always lifts spirits in the camp." Thistlestalk narrowed his eyes suspiciously towards Fuzzypaw, "I would eventually." he stated evenly. "I'm sure Oakstalk would love some young kin, especially now that Ribbondance is in Starclan now." The tom felt a pang of grief in his heart as he thought of his mother, and how much she would have doted on his kits. Fuzzypaw's expression softened as Thistlestalk mentioned Ribbondance. She had never met the she-cat before, but it was evident in his eyes how much he'd loved her. Wanting to cheer him up and tease him all at once, she exchanged a conspiratorial glance with Duskpaw before leaning towards her. "Hey, Duskpaw," she loudly whispered, watching as Thistlestalk's ear instinctively turned to listen. "Do you think Poppyflame would ever want to have kits?" Fuzzypaw twitched her whiskers, stealing a glance at the back of her mentor's head.

Spottedpaw's eyes shone as Lynxdapple talked, he couldn't wait to come back and tell Mouseclaw and Spiderfang all the things he's learned already! The small apprentice trotted after Lynxdapple, realizing how much bigger the warrior was compared to him, and Lynxdapple was small compared to most of the other warriors! "I remember what the territory looks like a little bit, but that was during and right after the fire." he mewed with a small shiver, "Does it look any better now?"
Mouseclaw purred quietly, "It has been a rather cold 6 moons without you. I'm sure you can't wait to go back to regular patrols now too." he teased. "Too bad Longkit and Lightkit are our kin, I'm sure you're itching to train another apprentice too."

Starrylight nodded, "I have faith that he knew what he was doing. To be honest, I would be scared to train Rustlepaw. She's our kin, and I would enjoy spending time with her, but I've never trained a blind cat before. I fear I would be too soft on her and she would be frustrated. Spiderfang I'm sure will supplement her training, that's just the way she is. But mothers barely get to train their kits, it's almost unheard of."
Bumbleskip flattened his ears, his mouth twisting into a snarl, "What isn't wrong Closesky, my world has fallen apart and no one can put it back together, not even me."
Thistlestalk's head snapped back towards his apprentice at the mention of Poppyflame, "Don't you go meddling where you shouldn't be now." he warned, though the tom was anything but intimidating. "I might put you on elder duty for a month."
Duskpaw snickered, looking back at her friend before looking at Thistlestalk. "I'm sure she does! She's such a pretty cat, I'm sure her kits would be just as beautiful."

"Kits are just something that us she-cats like to talk about...right?" she added the last part under her breath to Duskpaw, as if she weren't sure if that were true. "And Duskpaw's right, she is a real pretty warrior...right, Thistlestalk?" she meowed casually, as if she didn't know exactly what she was doing. Now, Fuzzypaw knew she wasn't the fastest, or quietest, or smartest, but she did know one thing: she could sure as StarClan be the most annoying.

I'm going to miss training with him, but it was going to come to this eventually. I'll just have to train with you instead." She decided. "Not as good as you would be." Snakesong murmured kindly, brushing her kinked tail against his side. "You would be so relaxing for them. All that calmness is good for a cat's self-esteem." She blinked shyly, though she was referring to herself this time, and all he had done for her with his stoic and soothing calamity. "Oh, yes. I'd love to train with the other apprentices." Rustlepaw perked up, wanting to train with her brother once she got the hang of the training. She tilted her head a bit and mewed. "What does the Burnt Sycamore smell like? I know what the bark would feel like, but...the tree's dead, right?" She asked, hearing stories of it from her parents.

He was nowhere near as young as he used to be, but his energy never waned, and he certainly didn't plan for it to anytime soon. He glanced at Spottedpaw and spoke. "The scents will change with the season too. Right now, it'll start to scent more fresh because newleaf is upon us. I want you to take in as many scents as you can while we walk. Tell me what you know, and which ones you don't know. That way we can practice them along the way." He decided. "Starclan, I sure wouldn't say no to another apprentice. I miss training Ratmask, that's how much I miss it." Spiderfang snorted with a twinge of anticipation at the thought of doing it again in the future. "Closesky must have instilled that in us. I know for a fact you enjoyed training Burninghope. You did a good job with her." She praised, her voice rusty yet approving.

But seeing we’re nearing the border perhaps you two should be scenting for prey instead of antagonizing me.” He finished dryly.

Fuzzypaw ducked her head sheepishly but didn't miss it when he conceded that the other warrior was pretty. She paused to raise her muzzle, catching the smell of something sour on the breeze, like rotting prey. She wrinkled her nose, looking to a cluster of what looked to be small hills surrounded by a fence standing across a stretch of rutted, grassless earth. It reeked of rot and was underlaid by the scent of something like mouse, only fouler.
"Thistlestalk," she meowed, nodding towards the heaps. "What is that place? It smells like crowfood."

Rat mask was a different story, but he turned into a good warrior under your training too.”

Duskpaw wrinkled her nose, she hated coming near the carrion place, especially after hearing the stories of the giant rats that lived there! Thistlestalk looked over at the carrion place, obviously wary. “It’s called the carrion place. It’s where the two legs come to dump things they don’t want. I try to stay away from it. It can be very dangerous, especially for smaller cats.”

Yes, that's pine, and definitely remember the frog scent, because we'll be going hunting as soon as we can tomorrow. Remembering the scents of all you clanmates is also important, so that's a good sign that you could pick out Cedarstar's scent alongside your sister's. For their sake, we'll go the opposite way and run into them afterwards. It's easy to get distracted when you're goofing around with your sibling." Lynxdapple snickered, before the small Warrior flicked his nub of a tail. "We'll go take a look at the borders first. Get ready to scent the stench of Thunderclan." He teased. "Ratmask had alot to prove." Spiderfang mewed honestly, bluntly, before she sighed. "He had alot of battles to fight. I am only glad I could prepare him for some of them. Needless to say, he was well worth the effort, and well worth the focus. But you, you big furball, I could see how much effort you put in. Now I guess we'll just have to go out on patrols and spar together again. Oh no." Spiderfang smirked lightly, her tail flicking his shoulder.

"Yuck! I can imagine..." Fuzzypaw shuddered and turned away from the carrion place, as she now knew it was called, exhaling harshly to rid her throat of the stench. Scenting the air again, she picked up the faint scent of a toad. Lowering her nose to the ground, she followed its trail over the ridges of still-frozen mud, hopping down into a gully as she followed the smell. She paused near the roots of a tall clump of brittle, dead grass that had been spared from the fire a moon prior. Cocking her head, she sniffed closer, realizing the scent of the toads was coming from beneath the roots.
Tentatively, she used her paws to shift away the loose soil around the stalks, her eyes widening as she uncovered three toads, still in their winter slumber.
"Thistlestalk! Duskpaw!" she called, hoping they could hear her from below the gully's edge. "Come quick!"

Mouseclaw snorted, "oh no, time spent with my mate. The horror! Although I’m not as young as I used to be. Our spars might end up in aching joints and injuries.” He mewed, bumping her shoulder lightly

Thistlestalk’s fur stood on end at his apprentice’s call, was she hurt? He galloped towards her quickly, calming when he saw her standing over something, “What did you find?” He asked, trying to hid how alarmed he had been only seconds earlier.
Duskpaw trotted after Thistlestalk, curiosity piqued at the other apprentice’s call.

Thistlestalk carefully made his way down into the ditch to peer over Fuzzypaw's shoulder, blinking in surprise he took in the toads. "Fantastic Fuzzypaw! With these and the two other things we caught we can feed the whole nursery!"
Duskpaw looked at the toads in awe, a slight pang of disappointment moving through her that she hadn't found them herself. Forcing herself to smile she looked back at Fuzzypaw. "Good find." she mewed, voice soft but genuine.

"Th-thanks!" Fuzzypaw meowed, puffing her chest up with pride. She head butted Duskpaw's shoulder lightly, purring. "I used that one thing you showed me, where you close your eyes when you scent? So that you can track it better!" Beaming down at the toads, she leaned in to grasp one gently in her jaws, letting out a squeak of alarm as it twitched in her grasp, starting to rouse from its hibernation. Panicking, she dropped the toad and slapped her two front paws on it, looking up at the two bigger cats with her eyes so wide her pupils nearly eclipsed blue.

"It is dead," he began slowly, "but it has been in our territory for longer than any of us could know. I suppose...It seems like history." It was vague and wasn't a very good descriptor, but it was the only one Cedarstar could think of. "Follow me, Rustlepaw. I'll lead you there." He laid his tail on her shoulder again. As distant ago as the fire was, the scars were still fresh of the 20+ clanmates that perished. Redspark and Mosspaw being two of them. "I'm not going to say what I'm sure you've already heard." Closesky sighed softly. He knew what it was like to lose his mate. Back then, everyone had told him over and over that he would see her again in StarClan, but he still wanted her now...not in StarClan. "When Swiftleap died, I about lost myself to anger and grief. Thankfully, I still had my kits and you still have Hazelblaze and Vixenflame--fine warriors." A small sparkle caught Closesky's eyes as he looked across the camp to the young she-cats. "I almost wish I trained them myself, but Kinkfire and Cardinalblaze did a tremendous job." He cleared his throat, realizing he was getting off topic. When he looked at Bumbleskip, he smiled kindly. "When the world falls apart, no one has paws big enough to put it back together, but you can always have a say in how the pieces fall."

We also have tall marshes to hide us if we need.” “Ugh, do not remind me of aging.” Spiderfang scoffed before she lifted her paws to plant them squarely on her mate’s side, aiming to bowl him over as she smirked. “Want to see if I still have my fight in me after being in that nursery again?”

I thought you’d want a second chance at beating me.” “Well. The clan just doesn’t know you like I do.” Snakesong mewed softly, before a rough purr escaped between her muzzle. “I’m sure your apprentice would like taking all those breaks and naps.” “I understand. You want me to get familiar with directions of the territory.” Rustlepaw nodded quickly, letting Cedarstar guide her as she got her bearings about her once again. She could feel the ground begin to change ever so slightly, becoming more dry. The scent of pine grew a bit stronger as well. “Oh. Uhm. There are more trees around here. I believe. I think they’re still really burnt though. It smells like ash. Pine too.”

"When the world falls apart, no one has paws big enough to put it back together, but you can always have a say in how the pieces fall." Starrylight purred quietly, running her tail down Whorlpaw’s back. “Well thank you. I’m sure I could figure it out, but I’m slightly relieved I don’t have to. Plus, now I still have plenty of time to spend with you and your siblings.” Bumbleskip let out a humorless laugh, “They’re here for now. But my life has been one misery after the next. My brother and father died before I was even an apprentice, my mother starved herself to death, two mates, four kits all dead and gone Closesky.” He croaked, head turning towards the sky with utter hatred in his eyes. “My own daughter found my sister dead under a tree branch. How much crueler can they get? Before long, Cherryvine and her kits, Hazelblaze and Vixenflame will be gone too and I’ll be left to rot in this camp alone.” He shook his head, a flicker of his old self poking through, “I can’t even look at Vixenflame... she looks so much like Redspark..” he trailed off, unable to look at the elder.

“Mm. It’s a decent distance. But not too bad.” Lynxdapple promised, glancing back at his new apprentice, before he chuckled. “Pay attention to everything you see around you. Our territory is not as green as the other clans’, but we blend in better this way with our pelts. We also have tall marshes to hide us if we need.” “Ugh, do not remind me of aging.” Spiderfang scoffed before she lifted her paws to plant them squarely on her mate’s side, aiming to bowl him over as she smirked. “Want to see if I still have my fight in me after being in that nursery again?” Spottedpaw sped up to walk next to his mentor, his short legs working harder than they ever had before. “I’ll do my best! It’s amazing how different this part of the forest looks compared to the trees near the camp. And the sun barely shines through the trees! Are the other territories like this? Well, I know Windclan isn’t.” Mouseclaw was pushed under his mate's paw, making him lose his balance. He quickly righted himself and smirked in her direction. "We better get out of the camp before we hurt anyone else." he challenged, before turning and racing out of camp.

Thistlestalk stifled a snicker. “They may not be moving but they are still alive Fuzzypaw.” The Tom moved around his apprentice, taking one of the roads and dropping his paw on it to snap the spine. Duskpaw giggled at her friend’s surprise “Come on Fuzzypaw, you didn’t think we were gonna eat them like that did you?” Scrambling to sit and briefly licking at the fluffy fur on her chest, Fuzzypaw flicked her tail dismissively. "Whaaaat? No..." Her eyes darted around for a moment before she ducked her head sheepishly. "Okay, maybe...but who cares about that? We've got some great big toads for the queens and kits!" She scooped the toad she'd all but flattened into her jaws and hopped to her paws, ready to go.

Hi ice if you make a post, I’ll reply ^.^ ) Thistlestalk chuckled, “That’s right Fuzzypaw, let’s go grab our other prey and bring our feast back to camp.” The Tom leapt out of the ditch, toad clutched tightly in his jaws. Duskpaw quickly bit into the third toad before standing up and following after Thistlestalk.
