Oakstalk turned to look at him. "That's not what I said." He spoke. "I'm tell you as your mentor and your friend. I don't want to see you build up walls of hate and anger. Anger shouldn't drive you."

Oakstalk turned to look at him. "That's not what I said." He spoke. "I'm tell you as your mentor and your friend. I don't want to see you build up walls of hate and anger. Anger shouldn't drive you." “Hah! I’m not angry.” Honeypaw flicked his short tail sharply. “I’m driven. I’m determined to be the best I can be in what I do. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be? What’s a heart to heart going to do in battle, or on the hunting grounds?” The golden apprentice retorted. His chest clenched, not wanting to believe his mentor’s words. He wasn’t his friend. Why would Oakstalk care about that?

Oakstalk glared at him. "You are the most stubborn cat I've ever met." He spoke. "Do you ever listen to anything I say?" He asked.

Oakstalk glared at him. "You are the most stubborn cat I've ever met." He spoke. "Do you ever listen to anything I say?" He asked. “Every word.” Honeypaw quipped, leaping over a small pile of stones and mud, scowling lightly at the mess on his paws. He hated getting his fur dirty. He gave an innocent look as he mused. “I’m your apprentice. I have to listen to what you’re saying. Over and over.”

Oakstalk scowled. "I'm going to get Cedarstar to changed you back to Honeykit." He grumbled softly. “Oh? I’ll just get Cedarstar to change you back to Oakpaw. Then get Talltalon to be your mentor. Then we can all learn the value of friendship together.” Honeypaw fit back into the dynamic, finding comfort in the banter. It was easier than admitting the crushing ache and doubts buried deep in him. Oakstalk could never know, Honeypaw couldn’t admit that. Not to anyone.

"Talltalon wasn't even my mentor the first time." Oakstalk spoke. "And he won't demote me, Ive done nothing wrong." He grumbled. "You need to tell me whats going on or we can't train. I can't have you angry all the time."

I can't have you angry all the time." “If you haven’t, then neither have I.” Honeypaw snorted. He looked at Oakstalk and narrowed his eyes. “What. So I have to be nice constantly just so you can do your job? You can’t handle it? You’ll abandon my training at your whim because I’m not the perfect apprentice you want?” He seethed lightly. He felt his body tense, before he forced himself to relax. “What’s going on. Is that we have a new leader, and we’re in leaf-bare. I need to fight and hunt. That’s all. Nothing you don’t already know is bothering me.”

"Thats not what i meant. I mean i can show you stuff but you'll fly off the rail when I correct you or try to fix something. Anger doesn't lead to listening." Oakstalk grumbled.

Honeypaw gave a scowl. “I’ve done nothing but listen and train and follow every battle or hunting technique you’ve shown me. Not once have I gone off in anger when you’re actually training me. It annoys me when you stop training me and start trying to be my parent. I’m happy when I train, don’t you understand that?”

Oakstalk snorted. "Fine. I'll just be your mentor then." He turned away. It hurt to know Honeypaw wanted nothing more. Getting him to open up he thought would be a good way to get stronger but he was wrong. Fine. "Go mark the border then." He growled. "And no more wasting time in the medicine cat den."

Honeypaw glared at Oakstalk, sparking with defiance. No way would he just up and stop visiting his brother. He didn’t say a word though, lifting his chin cooly and padding off to go and mark the border. He didn’t want to stay and think about the sliver of pain in his chest, at the thought that Oakstalk did care, and that he could only push him away. Lionscorch had watched the ordeal without a word. Now, once Honeypaw was out of earshot, he looked at Oakstalk and mewed to him. “I don’t envy you. Mosspaw’s the complete opposite...Are you okay, Oakstalk?” He asked.

Oakstalk snorted. "Why wouldn't I be?" He looked at Lionscorch. "I have the most subborn cat in existence as my apprentice. He doesn't see I'm trying. I care about him and he pushes away. I don't like his father I will admit but I try to like him."

I don't like his father I will admit but I try to like him." Lionscorch looked at Oakstalk with a deep sympathy. He nodded to the older tom. “Everyone in the clan sees how hard you try. Most of us were confused as to why Northstar paired you two together. But I began to think it was because you were probably the only cat who could handle this kind of challenge. You’ve mentored before. You have experience and moons of wisdom.” The black tom waved his tail. “I think, more than anything, something is bothering him. Something bigger than here and now. Maybe the best way to get past that block is to work around it, not tear into it...I know you don’t like him, but maybe speaking to Goldberry can help you find out what could be wrong.”

Oakstalk flicked his tail. "I think Northstar gave him to me as a punishment." He huffed. "For causing problems with Goldberry. Besides I don't think anyone in the clan notices how are I try. I'll never be respected like Cloudscar or Closesky." He huffed in frustration, everything irritating. He flicked his tail. "I suppose talking to him would help but I really would rather not."

"I suppose talking to him would help but I really would rather not." “Oh come on now.” Lionscorch breathed in faint humor and assurance “You have a right to be upset. Alot of cats were upset, kin was lost, and it’s hard to forgive the face of that suffering, even if it wasn’t really him. But you, Oakstalk, you are a brilliant warrior. In this moment though, I know how deeply you want to get through to him, and to understand your apprentice. Sometimes to help a cat we care about, we have to find help in those we don’t get along with. I mean, my sister’s mate is Ratmask. And you know what my mother can be like sometimes. Honeypaw’s alot like them, in a way.”

Oakstalk shook his head. "I suppose I'll try." He huffed. "I just want to knock Honeypaw in the head." Lionscorch hid a snort of laughter behind a large paw. “Oh, I don’t doubt that. Though, I can only assume if you knock his head, he’ll knock yours back as hard as he can. Give it time, everyone has to falter sooner or later.” He assured, leasurely and patient, a far cry from his mother’s temper and father’s energy. He turned to mark a spot on the border, before turning back to the older warrior.

"You're wise for you age, spending too much time with Closesky." Oakstalk moved along the border. "Honeypaw could take a lesson from you." “Well. He was a part of it. But Scorchfire, and Falcontalon as well. My parents. Cats like you, Oakstalk, who are loyal and strong. I learned from everyone.” Lionscorch chuckled. “Honeypaw’s mother was my mentor. I will say with certainty that Honeypaw’s sharp tongue comes from her. But she also knew how to make me feel like I was worthy of others pride. Don’t give up on Honeypaw because he snaps at you to. At that age, we all say things we don’t think through all the way. I think he likes you more than anyone outside his family.”

"You could've fooled me. He hates me." Oakstalk chuckled darkly. "He doesn't want anything to do with me." He spoke. “Has he told you he hated you?” Lionscorch looked at Oakstalk with concern, hoping that wasn’t the case. He knew Honeypaw was cold and calculating and snarky, but he never saw him as hateful. “He may just be projecting onto you.” He hummed thoughtfully. He felt bad that Oakstalk was suffering from this.

Oakstalk shook his head. "No he didn't. It's just a feeling." He spoke, heading along the border. “Well...” Lionscorch followed, deep in thought to try and offer some assistance. “Okay. Starting out, do you know anything that makes him remotely happy? That makes him feel at ease? What does he like that you’ve noticed?”

"Training and Coalpaw." Oakstalk spoke as they walked. “So hard work and family. Yeah. Sounds exactly like my mother.” Lionscorch cackled lightly. He calmed down and looked at Oakstalk. “Why not start from there? If he likes training, give gim a challenge that can get his mind going. If he cares for his family, assure him that his care is justified. But also that you feel the same about your own family. Think about it. How angry would you be if a cat neglected your kits’ training, and you couldn’t do anything?” He offered.
