“I guess you’re right,” Fawnpaw admitted gratefully. She paused her reply to gather up the prey at her paws and toss it the handful of steps to the fresh kill pile. Satisfied with her aim, she squinted at the medicine den, searching for any sign of Bramblepath’s presence inside. “All right, slowpoke,” she teased as she began to trot toward the den. “Let’s go herb-hunting!”

Bumblepaw nodded and followed his sister. The scent of herbs hit his nose as he got closer to the den. He nosed his way into the den and watched as the medicine cat perked up from the corner.
Bramblepath glanced up from sorting his herbs and turned his gaze to the apprentices. "Can I help you?" He asked.

“We just came back from hunting, and we came to help you out,” Fawnpaw declared as she dipped her head to step into the den after Bumblepaw. She stopped in the entrance, nervousness suddenly prickling in her chest as the scent of countless types of herbs hit her in a wave. “I mean—“ She amended, suddenly immensely interested by her shuffling paws, “If you want. If there’s anything you need.”

Bramblepaw quickly assesed the apprentices. He could have them sort out the herbs, but he figured that a tedious task like that would quickly prevent them from coming to help in the future. He also was running low on several stocks, and thought that it couldn't hurt to take a bit of time to go out of camp and have them help him restock. "I guess I could have you two help me collect some herbs, I have been running a bit low recently," he said calmly.

"That sounds perfect!" Fawnpaw purred, her eyes lighting up. Though she was certainly grateful not to be confined to an afternoon in the stuffy den, the more she considered it, the more the whole 'helping out the medicine cat' assignment was starting to feel like an adventure—and a chance to pick up some new skills that might prove useful, regardless of Bumblepaw's logic to the contrary. "Where are we going to go?" She asked, her gaze flitting between Bramblepath and Bumblepaw.

Bramblepath felt the barest hint of a smile touch his lips as he saw the apprentice's enthusaism. "Well, we'll start by heading out of camp. After that, I'll show you a few spots of my usual spots that I get my herbs from, and you can help me find a few more patches that I can take from. Does that satisfy your desire to help, or would you rather sort herbs in the den?" he said, adding the last sentence in as a joke.

Fawnpaw, picking up on the humor in Bramblepath’s voice, seemed it appropriate to twist her face into a playful grimace. “I’ll take the herb-hunting,” she declared earnestly, scrambling backwards out through the entrance to make way for her companions. “I’m a really good tracker,” she promised. “You’ll be glad you brought us along. And Bumblepaw’s not too bad himself,” she added, flicking her brother’s ear affectionately with her tail.

Bramblepath smiled at Fawnpaw's reaction and padded out of the den behind her. He nodded to her comment and said, "You're right, I won't regret bringing two energetic young apprentices who can carry the load back for me. It is a perfect opportunity." He chuckled a bit after he was finished and started towards the entrance to camp.
Bumblepaw muttered something along the lines of "Not bad?!" under his breath as he followed his sister and the medicine cat.

"Hey, that was a compliment—sort of," Fawnpaw teased as she quickened her pace and trotted after the medicine cat. She paused as they reached the camp entrance and curiously surveyed the land opening up down the slope. She inhaled deeply, scanning the air for the scent of herbs, and chuckled to herself as her untrained nose caught little beyond the fresh snap of wind and the leftover scents of prey. Satisfied that she was not some sort of herb-detecting prodigy, she turned her gaze patiently to Bramblepath.

Bramblepath smiled to himself as Fawnpaw stopped to scent the air for herbs. He knew that it was always going to be more complicated than that, and he couldn't help but mention it. "Well, if you're done trying to hunt the herbs like you would a mouse, we shall move on," he said in a light tone. He was in a surprisingly good mood today, which resulted in more teasing towards the apprentices. When he though about it though, he really had no good reason for his good mood.

Fawnpaw blushed and hurriedly dropped her head, though she detected enough softness in Bramblepath’s tone to keep from feeling anything worse than a bit of sheepishness. “Well, what do you do, then?” She retorted playfully. “The herbs must give off some kind of scent, right? You can smell the medicine den all the way from the other side of camp!”

"You can, but there is fewer distracting smells in camp as well. Also, once you have a rough idea how they grow, you can figure out where they are. For example, that bush you're standing next to has a small amount of catnip growing on the other side," Bramblepath said, pausing for a moment to motion to a bush next to Fawnpaw. "I harvested recently however, so there isn't anything we can collect from it without potentially killing the plants.

Fawnpaw’s hazel eyes widened in admiration as she shifted to peer around the bush in question. Indeed, there was a small patch of the green plant peeking out of the ground. As the breeze shifted toward her, the familiar scent of catnip tickled her nose. “You have to plan out when you harvest them?” Fawnpaw asked, then nodded thoughtfully. “I guess that’s really smart. Then you always know that there will be more growing. I wonder why we don’t do that with the prey we hunt,” she added with a glance to Bumblepaw, her tone caught between joking and honestly curious.

"Because prey is a lot less predictable. Some things can be predicted, such as over hunting an area will result in nothing left to hunt, but you can't tell for sure where the prey is going to be. They could be under the rocks or up a tree for all we know, but the plants will always grow back in the samne place every time as long as we're careful," Bramblepath said, trying his best to explain.

(Oof, sorry for disappearing! I'm back now!)
Fawnpaw nodded, her eyes wide and earnest as she pieced the idea together in her mind. "That makes sense, actually!" She chirped, tucking the new bit of knowldge away proudly. She shuffled her paws, glancing around curiously for any sign of nearby herbs while she waited for them to get moving again—though she knew that she likely wouldn't recognize them, anyway. "It sure would make hunting easier if the prey stayed put like that—or if we could all just eat plants," she chuckled.

(No problem. ) "That it would. If we could just eat plants we would be able to store up more food for leaf bare. Sadly, that isn't how it works," Bramblepath meowed. (Sorry for short response, I'm in a hurry right now)

(No worries! ^-^)
Fawnpaw nodded gravely. After a moment of quiet, she glanced around again eagerly and added, “So, what are we looking for today? Marigold? Cobwebs? Mouse bile?” Her voice trailed off, and she twitched an ear self-consciously, realizing that she had reached the extent of her medicinal knowledge.

"Currently? First I would like to retrieve a bit of catnip from a different place since my stock is getting old and I'll need to toss it out soon. After that... Yes, a bit of Marigold wouldn't hurt. Those two will make a nice start, but I doubt that that is all that we'll end up with. As for mouse bile, we have plenty, so I won't torture you with having to carry that," Bramblepath said.
(That moment, when you start typing your response, then forget every single herb but don't want to have to retype everything.)

(That was literally me with the last post! I almost started listing random plants I could see outside my window but decided to just stick with the basics xD)
"All right," Fawnpaw replied, silently thanking Starclan that this adventure would be conducted far away from the most offensive smells. She set off across the plain in the direction they were facing, then glanced back at her pair of companions. She dipped her head politely. "Lead the way!"

Bramblepath moved up in front of Fawnpaw then turned slightly to the right. He padded in the direction of the forest, already running through his head all of the spots he knew to have herbs in them. Finally, one with catnip clicked into his head and he changed direction slightly again. "Have you two ever been to the big boulder on the edge of the forest?" He asked as he walked.

My mentor likes to stick to the plains and the river; she says the forest is too stuffy to hunt in,” she added mildly. “Bumblepaw, have you ever seen it?”

Bumblepaw shook his head. "Not really. Firestrike has never taken me there, and I didn't hunt there when I go out with other apprentices. Also, judging by the description it wouldn't be by the border, so there's no way that I could have seen it on a patrol."

“Well then, we’ll call it an adventure,” Fawnpaw decided. She tilted her head at Bramblepath, remembering this time to let him lead the way. The prospect of an unfamiliar spot’s still existing on the territory that she had walked time and time again was fascinating; her imagination crafted it into a secret spot, full of beautiful sights and untouched prey waiting to be brought back to the clan. Though she knew that hidden hollows flooded with prey didn’t just pop out of thin air, she let herself hold tightly to the fantasy for just a bit longer. “I’ll race you, Bumblepaw—once we figure out where it is.”

Bramblepath smiled a bit and flicked his tail ahead. "Actually, you can just barely start to see it up ahead on that hill," he meowed as a dark blob came into view ahead. He envied the apprentices a little, when he as younger he never had races anywhere with other apprentices, instead he focused full time on his studies to become a medicine cat. Not that he would tell them that though.

Fawnpaw squinted, struggling to bring the indicated shape into focus; her nose had always been sharper than her sight. "Oh, there it is! I'll go ahead and start looking—if that's all right," she added demurely, pausing her exploits to incline her head politely to Bramblepath. Satisfied that she had fulfilled her duty of respect, she flicked Bumblepaw's ear with her tail and shot off toward the smudge atop the nearest hill.

Almost before his sister gave him the signal, Bumblepaw was taking off. He wasn't one for competing when there was no way to win, but he wasn't going to just roll over and let his sister win when there was a chance that he could actually pull it off.
"By 'go ahead and start looking' you mean race your brother there," Bramblepath chuckled, watching the pair streak off toward the boulder. He tried to remember when he was that young, but he couldn't.
