The Valley

The morning rays shone through the drapes, illuminating the stone walls of the castle.
I pad softly out of my quarters, my leather boots quietly scraping the floor.
I stop at a window, paneless, no bars protecting the inside from the brisk dawn air.
Looking down I can see far and wide, the mountains, the river, the valley.

The place where it happened, the valley is so green.
Once stained crimson with the blood of my clan.
The bell did toll, the blade did fall.
Sealing my family into Death's cold grip, merciless and virulent.

My hands grip the stone as I look down on the valley
The cold air whips through the window, whistling through the cracks.
Memories overtake me as I look upon the valley.
My heart could not take it, hot tears etching my face.

I run my hands through my hair, the color of the juniper pine at day's end.
My fingers, cold and shaking, once were warm in the grasp of my friends
My hands, strong and calloused, once weak and stained in red.
As I knelt in chains helpless and half dead
