(For now I'm just going to make up the training area ) After a brief moment of walking, they reached the training grounds. There were training dummies, and weapon racks with cheaply made swords specifically for training. The training grounds were in a sandy pit. "I'd recommend getting off the horse for this," Värmod said as he handed Nate a training sword.

Värmod laughed in amusement. "That's just a basic sword, but I think I can find something a bit better for you." He looked through the arrangement of swords on the racks, until he came across a simple iron shortsword. "This might as well be a glorified kitchen knife, but it'll work for now," He said as he handed Nate the smaller sword.

"Now, see that training dummy over there?" Värmod pointed to the center dummy as he spoke. "I want you to attack it. Let's see if you're any good already." He crosses his arms, the steel plating of his armor clanking together, as he awaited Nate's show.

Värmod chuckled and walked up to him. "Close. Your arms were too relaxed, it caused your attack to easily bounce right off." He drew his sword and faced the dummy. "This mostly applies to just large, two-handed blades, but when you swing your weapon, don't just use your arms. Put your entire body into the attack." As a demonstration, he swung at the dummy, using his feet to stabilize himself and putting his entire upper torso into the strength of the swing. He left a large, clean gash above Nate's paper cut slice.

Värmod smiled. "Well done!" he said, impressed with Nate's second attempt. "Now, let's try something different. I want you to thrust your blade through the dummy, like this;" He raised his blade and pulled it back, the tip pointing towards the dummy, and charged forward and thrust his blade deep into the dummy's torso with both hands. "This move is mostly used to finish off your enemy, or to jab through armor easier." He pulled out his sword and backed away, waiting for Nate to try.

(Sorry I poofed, I was playing a match of Overwatch ^^")
An amused look spread across Värmod's face. "A common mistake. If your blade isn't in the correct position, if you don't put enough force into the blow, or if your sword is in bad condition, it won't administer the blow you need." He turned to a nearby wooden table with some beat-up armor on it. "Here, let's try this." He was eager to see how well Nate would do against an armored target as he equipped the dummy with a chestplate. "Try to locate a weak spot in the armor to exploit."

Värmod's eyes widened in surprise. "Nicely done!" He said in surprise. "Your eye is even better than I thought." He pulled out is sword again and raised it into the air. "But always remember;" He paused and brought down his sword deeply into the center of the dummy's head, which was not wearing a helmet. "Sometimes simple is better. An enemy who isn't wearing a helmet has the largest weak spot."

"Hmm..." Värmod thought for a moment. "Well, it isn't exactly blade training, but if you like I could teach you a chant that is believed to make you more valiant in battle." Värmod and his shipmates commonly spoke chants before raiding a ship or a small village. They believed it would make the gods favor them in battle.

"Alright. Repeat after me." Värmod knelt down and rested his left arm on his knee, and pressed the tip of his sword into the ground. He closed his eyes and spoke the first part of the chant. "Lo there, do I see my father..." He paused and waited for Nate to repeat his words.
(Not sure exactly how fitting this is with the story, but I just thought a viking character such as him should use a viking chant x'D)

"Lo there, do I see my mother, my sisters and brothers..." He continued, and paused once more. Another crow called out in the distance, the air around them otherwise silent.

"Lo there, do I see the line of my people, back in my homeland," Värmod stopped a third time to allow Nate to repeat. The crow glided towards the ground, landing on the damaged head of the training dummy. It let out another loud call but Värmod did his best to ignore it.
(At this point I'm tweaking the words a bit, because the chant itself is more of a funeral chant than a battle chant)

"Lo, they do call to me, they ask of me to defend them..." He paused for another moment, waiting for Nate to repeat, before speaking the last portion of the chant. "I shall fight until my last breath, till Valhalla, where the brave live forever." He slowly stood up and slid his sword back into his sheath.

Värmod smiled. "That chant is a favorite of mine. It reminds you of what's important. When you're out on the battlefield, you aren't just fighting for yourself, for honor, or for glory." The crow flew back up into the sky as he spoke. "You fight for your people. Your friends. Your family."

Värmod sighed. "Anyway, back to business. Is there anything else you want to learn?" He asked, gazing over at the training dummies.
