Best buddy? Pax tried not to laugh at the cute name, but a small smile danced on his lips as he held out his hand. “This is the easiest way, if you don’t mind,” he explained. Of course, his friends would usually just lead him around with his hand on their shoulder, but he wasn’t sure which way Saffron would prefer. “You know, maybe since you can like, talk to animals or whatever, you could find me a seeing eye dog.” He’d always wanted one, but they were a luxury he just couldn’t afford. He’d considered training onehimself , but he’d never had a dog before, so he didn’t know the first thing about it.

Saffron stared at Pax's hand. She had never held any boy's hand before except for her father. She went great lengths to not have any physical contact between her and the opposite gender. She was a big girl now, and she shouldn't be afraid of holding a boy's hand. Grasping his hand, she hurriedly said, "Come on. Let's go faster." The faster they get to the road, the faster she can let go of his hand. She tried hard not to think about how warm his hands were. She made a mental note to herself to definitely get a dog for him.

Pax could both hear and feel Saffron’s anxiety about holding his hand and for a moment he felt bad for asking. To him it wasn’t a big deal. He had held the hands of many girls, and done even more that made the act of holding hands seem like child’s play. But he forgot that not everyone was as much of a hoe as he was. He was in the middle of saying, “You don’t have to if you don’t feel comfortable,” when she said let’s go and grabbed his hand and practically pulled him along. When he heard her make a note to get him a dog, he smirked and chimed in mentally, A German Shepherd would be badass. Or a Doberman? Something to make those idiots think twice about coming near me.

Saffron glared at him. She really wanted to block him out now. "Tell me how you can stop reading my mind or i'm seriously gonna kick you." However, a German shepherd would be cool.... her mother had never let her get a dog any kind of pet really. Except for fishes. Those gosh darn fishes that live for a week then die. Saffron really wanted either a cat or a dog, but that wasn't happening anytime soon if they were runaways.
(i'm sorry if i offended fish lovers. but they do die super fast.)

(Hahaha nah you right XD)
Pax winced and squeezed her hand. “Sorry Saf. If you really want to block me out you can. But you’ll have to remember to let me back in if you want me to hear you again,” he told her. He didn’t like it when people blocked him out. Being telepathic was how he felt the universe was evening things out for him since he was blind. But when someone blocked him out again it just put at a disadvantage again. As they traveled, he was beginning to hear thoughts, such as how someone hated traffic, how stupid all the other drivers were, etc, so he knew they must being getting close to the main road. “You might want to hide your pigeon while we flag down the cab. I don’t think many drivers would be keen on having a bird in their car.”

"Okay. But how? I've never been in a situation where someone is reading my every thought," she said, leaping over a fallen log. Stopping for a minute, Saffron called BB down to her hand. Pulling off the backpack, she unzipped it and tucked BB in with her books. "Stay quiet for me, okay?" She gave the bird a little peck before closing it with a small hole so the pigeon could breathe. Slinging her backpack over her shoulders again, she said, "We can go now."

Pax didn’t see the log, and Saffron hadn’t mentioned it, so he slammed his shin into it and let out a string of cusses. “Maybe warn me next time?” He requested through gritted teeth, before adding. “Closing your mind is like a door...just imagine slamming it and locking it and it’s the same thing. And if you want to open it again, just unlock it and leave the door open,” he explained. “Now, I’m putting you in charge of waving down the cab. I can’t see if one is coming,” he told her, though it should have been obvious.

"Oh! Sorry about that." Saffron apologized as they made their way down to the road. "It's like closing a door, huh?" Saffron tried very hard to imagine that. She bundled all her thoughts and memories into one, big ball and then in her mind closed a door and locked it with a little click. "That should do it."

And just like that, Paxton could no longer feel Saffron’s presence in his mind. And that made him feel very vulnerable. “There you go. I can’t hear anything. You could be cussing me out in your brain and I’d have no idea,” he joked as he stood next to her waiting for her to find a cab.

She nodded, but focused on finding a cab. Spotting a empty cab, Saffron stuck out a arm and waved. The cab slowed to a stop and the driver opened the window. "Where do you wanna go?" he said gruffly. "The nearest greyhound bus station, please." The driver nodded and opened the door. Saffron pulled Pax up as the doors closed and the engine revved and the cab started moving.

When the cab slowed down in front of them, Pax could hear the man's thoughts--and they weren't pleasant. Mainly, the driver was sure he was about to be jipped by a couple of kids up to no good. After all, what were these two doing in the middle of the day heading to the greyhound station? But he didn't care enough to ask questions. When Saffron pulled him into the cab, he let out a grunt of surprise, but slid on in next to her. When they finally got to the station, he thanked the man and paid him the due amount, plus a tip that surprised the man--but also made him wonder where this kid got the money to be handing out tips like that. But again, not his business.
"Alright so we need to buy tickets to somewhere far from here..." Pax told her. He couldn't see the list of locations they could buy tickets to, but instead of asking the ticket worker, he was going to let Saffron pick. "Keep in mind, we can get off anywhere on the way, we just need to get out of town fast."

(you know what i'm just make up a town)
Peering over at the tickets, she scanned the towns, choosing which town sounded the best. "Uh..... how about Norbury?" Saffron suggested. It was pretty far from here, and it sounded nice. The ticket worker raised his eyebrows. Saffron couldn't blame him. People know where their headed to, and when encountered some teenagers not knowing where they wanna go seemed a tad bit suspicious. But the ticket worker nodded and Saffron fished out a 20 dollar bill out of her backpack, careful not to disturb BB. Handing it over to the ticket worker, he handed two tickets for her and Pax. Thanking the man, she led Pax to the seats. "It says here that the bus will come in 30 minutes," she said.

“Norbury, huh?” Pax asked as he took the ticket from her and slid it in his pocket. “You ever been?” He added as he followed Saffron to the seats where they would wait for the bus to head out. “I actually grew up not far from there, believe it or not. In a middle-of-nowhere town called Reynoldston. Although calling it a town might be a stretch. It’s mostly double-wides, a gas station, and a piggly wiggly,” he told her, a slightly bitter tone in his voice as he remembered the dark memories of his early childhood.

She let out a little laugh. "A piggly wiggly? What's that?" She had never seen one in her life before, not to mention what it was. Her parents didn't like traveling very much, so they only traveled for her and her younger sister's sake. She never went outside of her town, it was just go to Europe every summer for a couple months and then come back. Fingering her ticket, she sighed. Saffron loved her parents a lot and was devastated to have to leave them. Glancing at Pax, she wondered what his life would be like with parents who probably didn't care much for him.

(Casually goes to Europe every summer XD)
Pax realized that must have sounded pretty stupid to someone who had never heard of Piggly Wiggly before, and he grimaced before launching into an explanation. “It’s a grocery store. The kind only found in super rundown, hillbilly towns that aren’t even big enough to have a Walmart. Sorry, you must have thought I was crazy,” he admitted with a laugh.

(i never traveled outside america so my traveling knowledge is just hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what do i do help)
Saffron smiled and elbowed him. "It's fine! You don't have to be embarrassed. Learning new things is fun for me! Except the stuff they teach in schools. Those can die," she added. Looking over at the vending machine, Saffron offered, "Are you hungry? I got a few extra bucks in my backpack."

(Haha that’s ok I haven’t either ) Pax didn’t remember that he hadn’t actually gotten a chance to eat his lunch until Saffron asked if he was hungry. In fact, the very thought of food made his stomach growl loud enough that he was sure she’d heard it. “I am...but don’t waste your money on me. You’ll need everything you’ve got,” he told her, before digging in his pocket for his wallet and pulling out two dollar bills. “Here. Can you see if they have cool ranch Doritos?” They were his favorite kind of chip. He could literally eat them all day long.

"I'll get the Doritos too," Saffron said before nodding and ambled off toward the vending machine, her eyes scanning the snacks. Finally spotting the Doritos, she put in the two dollar bills that Pax had handed to her and then punched in the number. The Doritos fell down and Saffron stuck her hand in the bin and took out the two chips bags before walking back to the seats. Handing a bag to Pax, she opened the bag and started eating.
"So what are gonna do after we reach Norbury?" Saffron asked between bites. "Do we like, look for a job or something?"

Pax thanked her for the chips, before chuckling at her question. “Well, usually I look for a place to stay first. But a job is a close second. The nice part about starting over is you can reinvent yourself. You can pick your name, your age, your history, your look, whatever you want to be. As far as finding a place to stay, I’ve found that older widows are the key, as they are lonely and love to mother kids our age.” He took a break from talking to eat some Doritos while Saffron processed this information. “But, since we are traveling together, we will need to come up with a backstory for both of us. Like we are a brother and sister whose parents passed away, or a couple who got knocked up and our parents kicked us out...the possibilities are endless.”

"Huh." Saffron didn't know what to think of making a new identity. She popped another chip in her mouth and pondered the thought of making yourself new. At first, the idea sounded tempting. Who wouldn't want to get rid of all their flaws and make themselves wonderful and perfect? But it sounded wrong just to erase what she was now.
"So.... should we be like siblings or something?" Obviously, they looked completely different, but she could always put contacts and dye her hair. And siblings sounded the most ideal for her, personally.

Pax shrugged. “Siblings works for me. Obviously I’m not sure if we look alike or not, so I’ll leave that all to you, but yeah we can say we are siblings. You good with the orphaned thing or did you have a better idea?” He asked as he popped another chip into his mouth. He could hear the thoughts of the bus driver for their bus as he got in and got ready to start loading. “Hey they are about to start letting people on. Let’s go get in line so we can get a seat near the back, yeah?”

Saffron nodded. "Sure, that works for me." She stood up and looked over at Pax. He was obviously going to need some help navigating the bus station. Grabbing his hand, Saffron said, "Come on. We should go now." She dragged him along until they reached the line. She let go of his hand and dug around her pocket for her ticket. "We should get our tickets out." She pulled her ticket out, gripping it tightly. They were really going to do this.
