( Loki (black male) and Luna (white female). They're about eight months now, but still adorable. ^^ )
Nico's irritation shifted into grudging respect. He stopped growling as she spoke, then glanced at his side. He had almost forgotten about his wound, the pain dulled by adrenaline. But now that she mentioned it, he could definitely feel it again. And it hurt like hell.
He watched her move to the log, a spark of amusement lighting his dark eyes at her comment about him understanding her. If only she knew. He held his position a while, studying her as she did him. He looked down at his clothes, considering grabbing them and taking off. He could probably run a couple more miles before his wound really slowed him down. But then he thought about his Change. The process was not quick, and it was certainly not painless. And it would hurt twice as much with a bullet buried in his side.
His other option... was risky. Letting this girl help could put her in danger if the Organization found him. Plus, how did he know she even knew what she was doing? But even as he considered the cons, he knew she was probably his best bet.
But he couldn't just walk up to her and ask for pets. That would be weird. So after a moment, he loosed a sigh and slowly lowered himself onto his belly. He grunted softly as pain radiated out from his wound. Then he put his head on his paws and went back to watching the girl.

(Ahhh Loki, I love it!)
As Nova watched the creature respond to her actions, she couldn’t help but feel some sort of connection to him, as if he could understand her somehow. But that was crazy. He was probably just reacting to her body language. When he finally lied down, she didn’t move at first, as she wanted him to get fully settled and calm before she made any moves towards him. Once he seemed like he was comfortable—well, as comfortable as a wolf could be with a bullet wound—she slowly lowered herself off of the log and into a crouch. “Shhh...I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to take a look at your side,” she said softly, hoping the tone of her voice conveyed that she was a friend, since he obviously didn’t understand her words. Once she got close enough, she carefully reached out to touch his shoulder, but didn’t take her eyes off his head in case he decided to snap at her. But once she was assured he wouldn’t bite her, she focused on the wound and let out a low whistle. “Well damn. You must have really pissed someone off, huh?” She mused, wincing at how bad the wound seemed. “Let me rinse it off then we can see if any of those things you stole could help me bandage it up.” Grabbing the water bottle she had brought with her, she carefully poured water on the wound until his fur was clean of all the dried blood. Then, she picked up his bundle and untied it. Finding a T-shirt, she bit it with her teeth and pulled until it tore, then she continued to rip it until it made one long bandage. “Now I’m gonna need you to stand so I can wrap this around you...” she mumbled as she gently poked his underbelly, hoping that might get him to stand.

( Yes, it really is a fitting name for him. Loki is the Norse god of mischief, and my kitten is very mischievous. xD )
Nico lost track of time as he lay there watching the girl. He was starting to feel rather sleepy, though, when she moved. She was slow and careful in her movements, but he still jumped slightly. He lifted his head halfway, his gaze wary as he considered her words. A real wolf probably would have growled, or snapped, or ran. Nico couldn't deny he felt tempted to react that way. But he forced his human side to outweigh the wolf. This was the whole reason he had stayed after all. He wanted her help, needed it, actually, though it chafed to admit that.
So Nico kept himself very still as she came closer. Every muscle in his body tensed at her touch, ready to bolt. It took a conscious effort for him to relax. His gaze remained on her, watching her every move, and he let out a quiet grunt at her question. You can say that again.
When she started pouring water over his wound, Nico let out an involuntary snarl. That hurt. He turned his face away from her so she didn't start thinking he was going to bite her.
Then she stole his clothes, and he kind of felt tempted to do just that.
He watched, incredulous and irritated, as she ripped his shirt into a makeshift bandage. He wasn't sentimental — it was just a shirt — but it was currently the only one he had. Being without would make things rather difficult once he was back in his human skin.
Nico just grunted when she told him to stand, and shot her a glower when she started poking him. He stayed stubbornly in place for a good minute before rising to his feet. He gave himself a thorough shake before huffing quietly and side-eying the girl, as if to say, Happy now?

At first, Nova was afraid she’d have to figure out some other way to bandage his side if the wolf didn’t rise to his feet so she could wrap it around his torso, but finally, he stood up—and gave her an irritated look that made her giggle a bit. “Thank you,” she said with a smile, raising a hand to scratch his ear in thanks before beginning to bandage him up. Once she was finished and had tied off the bandage, she gave him one last pet before standing up. “All finished. The bullet is probably still in you, but id need better tools—and probably some tranquilizer—to take that out, so this will have to do.” She told him. Or really just told herself since he couldn’t understand her. Bending back down, she began to bundle his stolen package back up again before setting it at his feet. “Now try to stay out of trouble, yeah?”

When she saw the wolf...bow? Nova’s eyebrows shot up in surprise and she laughed a little. “Well, aren’t you quite the gentleman? If that’s your way of saying thank you, then it was my pleasure,” she said with a smile, before grabbing her water bottle and starting to walk away. But once she took a few steps she turned around in the hopes of watching the wolf go, as she thought about how lucky she was to have just gotten to help such a magnificent creature in his time of need. Her dad would have been proud. And that thought made her smile even wider.

Nico was usually a gentleman, so that just made him wonder: where did the attitude come from? He wasn't a saint, but still. He wasn't normally this... prickly. He could probably blame some of it on the stress of the night, and his wound, and the rest... Well, he supposed he was taking his frustration with the Organization out on her, which definitely wasn't fair. So he made a conscious effort to curb his tongue — metaphorically, since he couldn't actually talk.
He watched the girl go, only to see her stop and look back. At first, Nico wasn't sure why she'd stopped. Then he realized: she wanted to see him go. He looked over his shoulder, nose in the air as he made sure no one from the search party was near. The coast was clear, but Nico was no longer in any hurry to leave. This spot was as good as any to Change... Just as soon as the girl left.

The next day, Nova had to go into the city for school. She was in her final year of college, and had been taking night classes downtown to finish up her degree. This particular night, she had an 8 PM class that was then followed by her spending almost three hours in the library working on her final thesis. She would have stayed all night if the library didn’t close at midnight. So with a sigh, she packed up her laptop into her backpack and headed out. Her car was pretty far away from the library since she hadn’t been able to find a parking space nearby, but she didn’t mind the walk. It was a chilly, yet cloudless night, and there was a slight breeze that sent shivers down her spine, but in a good way. However, after a block or two, she realized there were two guys following not so far behind her. A little concerned, she started to walk faster, and then her heart began to pound when they picked up the pace too.
“Hey there sweetheart. Where you going in such a hurry?” One of them called out. Nova didn’t turn around, but she did check out her surroundings. And to her dismay, she realized the downtown street they were on was alarmingly empty. That’s when she heard them yell at her once more, this time much more threatening.
“Hey! Look we just have something to ask of you, so why don’t you just stop acting like such a stuck up bitch and talkl to us, eh?”
At the sound of them calling her a bitch, Nova bristled and whipped around. “What did you just call me?” She asked, eyes narrowed.

( Hey! Sorry for the poof! I've been slowly working on this post the last couple days, trying to figure out how/why Nico would be in town. xD ) In the end, Nico spent his night as a wolf. It was illogical to take human form in the middle of the night, when he had nowhere to sleep — and when he was now sans shirt. He had a jacket, but nights tended to get chilly, and his fur was much better insulation.
He didn't get much sleep, though, because as soon as he settled down, his body started forcing the bullet from his side. And it hurt a hell of a lot more coming out than it had going in. It took most of the night, and by the time it fell out and slid, slick with blood, through his fur to get caught on his makeshift bandage, Nico barely had the energy to Change. He also knew that if he did choose to Change, his body would take longer to heal. So he was left with a choice: stay a wolf, rest, and let his body recover; or Change and wander about for a day or so with a bullet wound in his side.
The choice should have been obvious, but unfortunately, there were several reasons staying a wolf was not a good idea. So, as soon as the sun started peaking over the horizon, Nico began his Change.
///
Hours later, Nico was in human form and hitching a ride to town with one of the locals. He normally tried to avoid people when he knew the Organization was in the area, looking for him, but he hadn't had much choice this time. His car was in the city, at his motel where he'd left it, and with it was everything he owned. Which wasn't a lot, but that had more to do with his travel-filled lifestyle than anything else. So, he caught a ride with a stranger.
He had spent most of his day hiking through the forest, trying to head away from where the Organization had been looking for him last night, but still toward civilization. He had found an old hunting cabin, which he'd broken into (although there hadn't been any real "breaking," since the place hadn't been locked). He'd scrounged together some food — he was starving — then raided the medical supply to clean and bandage his wound. He'd taken a nap on the threadbare cot in the back, and then on his way out, he had left some cash in the first aid kit to make up for what he'd taken.
From there, he'd walked down to the road and followed it toward the city until someone was nice enough to stop.
Now the sun was setting as Nico's ride finally pulled into the parking lot of his motel. Nico thanked the driver, secreted a twenty into the man's ashtray, and climbed from the truck. He watched the man drive away before going into his motel room. He'd paid it out for the rest of the week, but he wasn't about to stay any longer. The Organization would track him down eventually, and Nico didn't fancy being trapped in this tiny motel room when they did.
So he stayed only long enough to take a shower, change into clean clothes, and pack his things. Then he was off. He didn't have a destination in mind, though, so he ended up driving a bit aimlessly through town as he considered his options.
Eventually he stopped for more food. He usually avoided fast food, but at this hour, such establishments were all that was open. He'd just parked and climbed out of his car when he heard voices a little way down the street. His glanced over automatically, but turned away just as quickly, uninterested.
But then his gaze snapped back again, as his brain registered what he'd seen. The girl from last night. And she was being followed by a couple of suspicious looking guys.

(You’re fine! I get it ) Nova’s fingers curled tightly around her keychain, and she discreetly unlocked the safety button on her pepper spray as the men laughed at her anger and moved closer. “You really think a tiny can of pepper spray is going to help you against this, hun?” The larger of the two men opened his jacket just enough for her to see the dark glisten of a handgun strapped to his belt, and Nova’s blood ran cold as she froze in place. “Please...I don’t want trouble. Do you want money? I don’t have much but you can have what’s in here,” she dug through her backpack and tossed her wallet away from her—a trick her father had taught her in case she was ever mugged. But they seemed like they could care less about her valuables. “Nah, sweet thing. We aren’t theives. We just want some pretty company like you,” the other informed her, before launching towards her. Gasping, Nova ditched her backpack and ducked down a side alley, running as fast as she could as she heard the two men muttering curses as they pursued her relentlessly. Her footsteps matched the quickening beat of her heart as she nimbly raced through various side streets and alleyways, knocking down things as she went to try and slow them down. But then, she made a misstep, and tripped over an uneven crack in the road, and fell hard, scrapping up her hands and knees as she scrambled to get back up, but before she could, they were on her like wolves on an injured sheep.

Nico stopped walking toward the fast food joint. He looked between the girl, who had stopped walking herself to face the men, and the two guys. His wolf could sense the danger brewing, even as the man saw it unfold before his eyes. He wasn't close enough to make out individual words, despite his wolf-sharp hearing, but he could hear the tone of voice used. The fear and uncertainty in hers; the arrogant confidence in his. It made Nico's hackles rise, figuratively of course.
He had just taken a step toward them when the girl tossed something — her wallet, he realized later — to one side. The men took no notice of it, and the one lunged.
The girl reacted fast, and moved faster, but Nico knew she wouldn't be able to hold her lead for long. He muttered a curse, but he resisted the instinctual urge to give chase. Even if he was twice as fast as they were — which he was — he was too far away to catch up before it was too late. Instead, he calculated where the alley she'd darted down led to. Then he took off.
Nico wasn't familiar with these streets, but there was once a time when he was very familiar with the ins and outs of another city. Since most were set up the same, it was easy enough for Nico to map out a general layout. He didn't know what the girl planned to do, but if she was smart, she would try her best to lose her pursuers. That meant she would stay off the main streets. A straight shot like that, she would quickly be overtaken. No, she would have to stick to shirt streets and shortcuts.
As he ran, Nico became aware of loud banging noises from nearby. They were all a little different, but moving, almost like... He laughed softly. The girl must have been knocking things over in an effort to slow her pursuers. Smart, though it would slow her down almost as much as the men. At least it helped Nico track them.
Even with that bit of help, and his additional speed, by the time Nico found the girl again, he was almost too late. He skidded to a stop at the mouth of another alley to see the girl on the ground, them men practically on top of her.
"Hey!" he shouted, even as he started moving toward them. "Let her go!"

When she heard that voice—the voice of some guardian angel—Nova almost broke into tears. Her anger at the men had quickly evolved into terror as one held her down while the other prepared to have his way with her. The two men stopped what they were doing and looked up, before sneering at the man and waving him off.
“Go on man, now isn’t the time to be some Good Samaritan. Mind your own business, cause trust me, you don’t want to mess with us,” Nova’s attacker had let go of her for a moment to grab his gun and show this stranger that he had it, and she saw the opportunity and knew she would only have a split second.
Drawing her legs up to her chest fast, she then kicked the man in the stomach and knocked the wind out of him—and the gun out of his hand. The other man’s eyes went wide before he realized she was trying to get away, and he grabbed her ponytail and yanked her back onto the ground so hard she saw black dots in her vision. But that didn’t stop her from using her nails to try and scratch and claw her way out of his right grip as she screamed, “Help! Please help me!”

The gun didn't faze Nico. He didn't flinch or slow his step, but anger sparked. What was it about the upbringing of some people that made them think they were entitled to things they had no right to? Nico much preferred living among wolves; they were straightforward, and though they didn't use words, they knew what 'no' meant better than most humans.
When the girl lashed out, Nico took the opportunity to dart forward, covering the remaining distance between them faster than any human should be able to move. He ignored the man she had struck for the time being, though he kept one ear on him as he grabbed the guy who was holding her down. Nico took a handful of the guy's shirt and heaved him backward, throwing him into the nearby wall. He checked himself at the last second, so the guy hit the wall hard enough to hurt but not so hard the blow caused irreparable damage. If a werewolf wasn't careful, it would be all too easy to kill or permanently injure humans.
Once that guy was out of the way, Nico planted himself in front of the girl, and between her and the men. "I suggest you two leave," he said, his tone low and dangerous. "Now."

Nova watched with wide eyes as the man threw her assaulter against the wall like he weighed nothing. She hurriedly got back onto her feet and stumbled backwards, not taking her eyes off the scene as she saw the man put himself between she and the attackers, whose fearful faces liked quite similar to the way hers had looked only moments before.
At the man’s threat, the two cowards scurried off into the darkness, and Nova let out a shaky breath before staggering over to the nearest wall and leaning heavily against it. Sniffling, she lifted her hand to feel her lower lip, and as she suspected, it was busted open, and her finger came away with a little dot of blood. Looking back up at the man who had saved her, she took another breath before managing to say, “Thank you.”

Nico didn't take his eyes off the men until they disappeared from sight. Then he let the tension slowly seep from his body. His stance, which he'd made as big and threatening as possible, relaxed, and the anger faded from his eyes. He turned to the girl, finding her against the wall instead of beside him where she'd been a moment ago.
He took a step toward her, but didn't get too close. She'd probably had enough of strange men crowding her. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly. He could smell blood, and his gaze drifted over her, seeking the source. Or sources, as the case may be. Her lip, hands, and knees were all bleeding. He realized then that "are you okay" was a really insensitive thing to say at a time like this. She'd just been attacked, almost rap.ed. Obviously, she was not okay.

Though the answer to his question was a bit obvious, Nova knew this man had good intentions, since obviously he’d just put himself in harms way to help her. Nodding slowly, the slender blonde looked down at her hands and grimaced a bit. Her palms were all red and raw, and there were ragged holes in her leggings where she had fallen on the uneven pavement.
“Well, considering how things might have gone had you not stepped in, I’d say I’m alright,” she said with a small smile before closing her eyes and focusing on her breathing for a few minutes. Once she had calmed down enough to think straight, she immediately thought back to her backpack she’d dropped during the chase.
“I need to find my bag...it has my laptop in it.” And inside the laptop was the summation of her four years of school. She couldn’t afford to lose all that hard work only weeks from turning in her thesis and graduating. Besides, giving herself a task to do like finding her bag helped her to forget what had just happened, if only temporarily.

Nova narrowed her eyes at his offer, slightly skeptical given that this man had nothing to gain from helping her, but her gaze softened when she realized she would do the same for someone—in fact she had done so just the night before. Although that had been for an animal, not a person. But still. Giving him another small smile, she nodded, “Alright. But only if you truly have time. I know it’s late and I’m sure you had other plans besides helping a damsel in distress,” she joked weakly as she bent down to pick up her keychain that had been tossed aside in the scuffle. Holding onto her pepper spray tightly—just in case—she bit her lip and looked around, suddenly realizing she had no idea where they were at the moment, and that she hadn’t been keeping track of her route during the chase. “You May regret offering to help me though, because I have no idea how I got here and it may take a while to find my bag.”

Nico noticed her moment of suspicion, and eased back a bit, giving her more space. He meant her no harm, but he couldn't blame her for being wary. The other two guys may have been sketchy, but Nico wasn't exactly a knight in shining armour. He was wearing dark jeans and hiking boots, and a dark grey Henley under a black jacket. Add in his dark hair and eyes, and Nico looked more like the dark knight who was going to kidnap her.
Luckily, she seemed able to see past all that. Or maybe she was just naïve. Nico managed to return her smile with one of his own. "It's fine. I operate under my own schedule." He noted her pepper spray but didn't comment, though he hoped she didn't try to use that on him. The stench, if it ended up on his face, would probably make him pass out.
Her admitting to being lost made him smile again, more genuinely this time. "I can get us back," he said confidently. Then he gestured with a nod of his head for her to follow. "This way."

The man’s smile made Nova feel a bit more at ease as she followed him back through the many twists and turns of the city’s Streets. “So you said you operate on your own schedule...what do you do exactly?” She asked, thinking that he was too old to be a student, so he must be self employed or something along those lines to set his own hours. As they walked she also did her best to clean off the dirt and grime off her scrapped up palms, though it stung to do so. “Oh and I don’t think you’ve told me your name either,” she added as she looked over at him through the darkness of the night. He almost seemed to blend in with their surroundings in his dark attire.

Nova had waited for him to answer her question about what he did, but when he remained silent she assumed he just didn’t want to talk about it, which was fair. She want about to pressure him for more information than he was willing to give.
When he shared his name, she returned his smile and tested the name out on her tongue. “Dominic Fletcher...let me guess. Do people call you Dom for short?” She asked curiously, thinking of those fast and furious movies where the main character shared the name Dominic, but went solely by the first half of the name. At his comment about her hands, she winced slightly as she looked down at them. “Yeah is definitely gonna need to wrap them once i clean them up properly. I’ll also need to come up with some sort of story as to how this,” she gestured to her hands, knees and lip, “all happened. I’d really prefer not to tell the truth,” she admitted quietly.

“Oh, I actually like Nico a lot better. That would actually be great...I don’t have any way of cleaning this all off until I get home, and that’s quite the drive,” the blonde told him as she waited for him to catch up. “Where’s your car?”
